12:01 AM
I have this OCRd version of Pokorny on my computer, and some of the symbols and accents are wrong too... it's really terrible to work with. Most are OK, but...

user19161
@aedia While walking in the shopping centre at midnight that day I saw a sculpture of you, some Salvador Dali unicorn!

user19161
You seem to be everywhere, not just Unicorn Land.

Those who Believe can see us everywhere, it's true.

user19161
@aediaλ Thank you for remembering that I am a Belieber.

@Cerberus You? You have something other than dead tree format? I am shocked!

12:09 AM
@aediaλ Hey I love modern technology! I'm just sceptical of some of it...
Nearly the entire corpus of classical Latin has been digitized for decades.

user19161
@Cerberus I hate technology that is too modern! Like touch screen desktops.

@Jasper I like it as long as it makes me more productive.

@Cerberus gasp I must have it for the Kindle app on my smartphone.

user19161
Wah, so many people have Kindle.

Hi @Kit!

12:13 AM
@simchona Hello!

@Kitḫ We saw a picture of aedia earlier. With a leaf.

I think I've seen that one. Or was it a new one?

user19161
@simchona I was expecting to see her with a horn instead.

@Kitḫ It is rather expensive: the Bibliotheca Teubneriana on cd-rom. I have a digital version, but I don't think it will run on anything but a modern PC.

@Cerberus Damn it. Oh well. I haven't been practicing Latin either.

12:16 AM
Bad!

@Kitḫ I think it's new (to here) but perhaps Cerberus has been rubbing off on me again and I just don't remember.

And then I learned that I'm desktop background material

@Kit Get it while it's hot!

@Cerberus Spanking?

user19161
@aediaλ Very artistic.

12:18 AM
@aediaλ Oh thanks! I thought you were joking, because the moth one was on a leaf.

@aediaλ My favourite pastime.

@aedia I see you handed in your limerick. I did mine. My name is plasmaroar

That was elegantly simple. I liked it.

And I submited mine which insults spelling mnemonic rules.

user19161
@SonicTheHedgehog You already handed in your poem to me that day.

12:20 AM
@Kitḫ The highlights were blown out like that in the original shot; same with the obscured background being dark. It just happens that well sometimes. I love windows.

Well, limerick and poem is not exactly same... You have to keep the syllables same.

@Cerberus giggles

@SonicTheHedgehog Meter.

@SonicTheHedgehog Keep the meter; the rhythm, not the syllables.

12:22 AM
...Oh damn it.... I rhymed see with see...
Great, everything I do messes up...
Hmm, but how to fix it...

@Jasper I've never had someone tell me that before

@SonicTheHedgehog I think to myself while I'm composing limericks (I'm not kidding): Da DUMpity DUMpity DUM (foot tap), da DUMpity DUMpity DUM (foot tap), da DUMbley DUM, da DUMbley DUM, da DUMpity DUMpity DUM (cymbal crash)!
It makes the right number of beats - 16 total counting the pauses after the long lines.

Hey, that's like my mumble!

Such agile foot taps!

@Cerberus bows
I try to not make the noises too loud. I played percussion in my high school band.
So I can get a little tappity with my hands or some pencils if I'm not paying attention.
And I always wish I had a cymbal there to make a real noise.

12:29 AM
Maybe buy one of those small cymbals that you can take with you everywhere you go and use on the train.

Finger cymbals?

Good for belly dancing.
Castanets. < — What are those?
That word popped into my head just now.

@Kitḫ The wooden thingies

Castanets are a percussion instrument (idiophone), used in Moorish, Ottoman, ancient Roman, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese music. The instrument consists of a pair of concave shells joined on one edge by a string. They are held in the hand and used to produce clicks for rhythmic accents or a ripping or rattling sound consisting of a rapid series of clicks. They are traditionally made of hardwood, although fibreglass is becoming increasingly popular. In practice a player usually uses two pairs of castanets. One pair is held in each hand, with the string hooked over the thumb and the ...

@Kitḫ They're just a clicky thing, comes in pairs

12:32 AM
Huh. Belly dancers use them?

I associate them with Flamenco dancers.

Equivalents for children sometimes are plastic and have elastic holding them together and little indents for the fingers, to hold them easier.

I wonder why I thought of them. Must be the percussion angle.

They sound a bit like claves or woodblock, but clickier, and used in different music.

I know this song in English, I think...
Or do I?
Is that a translated cover? Or is this the cover?
Or am I imagining things.

12:37 AM
I didn't know there was a translation.
I know the English lyrics, but I don't know which was first.

Oh!
What is the English title / artist?
Something like "darling, darling, darling"...?

Stand by me

Ah, yes!

Ben E. King

12:38 AM
That's it.
Ah, the English version is the original.

And its chord progression was so common after that it's been called the "Stand by me changes"!
The 50s progression is a chord progression and turnaround used in Western popular music. As the name implies, it was common in the 1950s and early 1960s and is particularly associated with doo-wop. It has also been called the Ice-cream changes, the"Stand by Me" changes , and the doo-wop progression. The progression is: I vi IV V (see chord (music)#Roman numerals). For example, in C major: C Am F G (macro analysis). Theory In Western classical music during the common practice period, chord progressions are used to structure a musical composition. The destination of a chord progression is...

Hmm interesting.

Hmm, Jasper disappeared again.

Does anyone happen to know how long blood taken from a donor can be kept before use?

Frozen or fresh?

12:47 AM
I don't know, whichever method will work?

Frozen lasts longer, but I'm pretty sure less than 24 hours.

I mean, is it at all possible to test it for HIV and Hepatitis B with certainty?
Oh, then probably not.

A blood donation occurs when a person voluntarily has blood drawn and used for transfusions or made into medications by a process called fractionation. In the developed world, most blood donors are unpaid volunteers who give blood for a community supply. In poorer countries, established supplies are limited and donors usually give blood when family or friends need a transfusion. Many donors donate as an act of charity, but some are paid and in some cases there are incentives other than money such as paid time off from work. A donor can also have blood drawn for their own future use. Don...

> Red blood cells, used for traumas, have a 42-day shelf life. Platelets, the clotting element in the blood that is used for cancer and leukemia patients, have a shelf life of 5 days. Plasma, which is mainly used for burn victims, has a shelf life of one year.

12:49 AM
^What she said

OK thanks.

Why do you want to know?
You should get tested properly, if you are worried.
Donating blood in order to get a free HIV test puts other people at risk.

I was just curious how safe receiving donated blood is. I am not personally concerned.
Besides, HIV tests are free here anyway.
And any other STD tests.

It's pretty safe in the US anyway. But never 100% safe.

@Cerberus AND you're all giants?
Life isn't fair.

12:51 AM
Sexy giants.

@Kitḫ Safe sex -y giants

I read that getting HIV-infected blood is a chance of one in 4 million in England.

@simchona Hehe. Yes.

@simchona No we're just windmills.

@Kitḫ Sorry, the formatting wasn't working

12:52 AM
@Cerberus I could tilt at you all day.

@Kitḫ You tiny too?

@simchona Nope, you can't do part of a word. Sad, innit? (I looked back just in time to see you reaching for that one. Should have put on your heels first.)

@aediaλ I did just buy 4 inch heels...
Allo, @Jin

@Cerberus Depends on what you consider tiny. I am shorter than six feet.

Dunno if our dear doggy is into kitties though. Ah well.

12:54 AM
@simchona giggle
He wanted that whole armful earlier...

Aug 15 at 22:13, by aedia λ
@z7sgѪ I'm bigger than a pony!

Jin
Hello.

Hola!

Jin
We sent out swag packages. Top users should be getting them very soon.

Hello!
@Jin You mean, for EL&U?
For really real?
Or for some other site and you are just teasing us?

Jin
1:00 AM
For EL&U. Some users already reported on meta.English.SE that they have received their package

@aediaλ I just fell in love with you again.

Jin
You two get a room!

@Jin Wha—? But, but...

Jin
You were supposed to say "but we are in a room!"

1:07 AM
@aediaλ Fantastic!!
I love his eating.
It's really an art.

@Kitḫ :)
@Cerberus It is, isn't it?
I've got to run, whoops!
Catch y'all later!

@Kitḫ But were they the right kind of kitties?

@aediaλ Night!
@simchona Um. There might have been a siamese? But I think it was mostly tigers and monies.

@Kitḫ Hmmmmm

Bye Aedia!
@simchona Hey, no need to repeat that!
Thanks!

1:15 AM
Ergo, wrong kind of kitties.

Haha.

Damn it. I missed it because I was looking for the cat picture.

Nothing you would be surprised at.

@Kitḫ My conclusion was essentially that, once again, I am the wrong gender.

I never have that problem. Hmm.

1:16 AM
@Cerberus I must have missed allusions to it earlier

Well it is of no consequence anyway.

Oh, wait. Are you referring to the fact that Cerberus is a dog person, and you are a cat?

Yes.

Well, I am a bit dense sometimes. I guess I didn't know that.

But it's OK. I still like cats. Especially in thyme sauce.
It's just different.

1:18 AM
I prefer rosemary.

Nobody will ever understand what this means. I hope.

Right. Sure.

^^

But what do you mean about "once again"?

Rosemary is good too.

1:20 AM
@Kitḫ It's happened before. I find dog people.

@Cerberus She's particularly good if you give her tequila first.

@Kit: I now know what you meant about him, though.

@simchona Oh. Well, you're young. Lots of pet owners out there might like a dog or a cat or both, and they just don't know until they've tried pet ownership.
I know a few people who own fishes.
Oh and they're all named Eric.

@Kitḫ Isn't that the Half-A-Bee?

@Kitḫ But gotta watch out with getting her pregnant...

1:22 AM
The fishes, that is.
@simchona Also that.

Oh shoot I missed those.

@Cerberus Hah. Good one. But since my real name is not Beezlebub, I think I'm in the clear.

@Cerberus The fish people?

Personally, I like dogs and cats. I had two successive dogs during my childhood, but since then it's been pairs of cats.
I thought fish might be nice, and my son likes them, but they are a pain to keep.

@Kitḫ You never know who comes by when you're off to work...

1:26 AM
What about rabbits?

@simchona Those, and the mysterious lines.

@Cerberus Gosh, I hadn't thought of that.

@Kitḫ So you have a cat now? Or a dog?

Just the one cat. The other of the pair died a while back, and we haven't had a moment to decide whether to eat this one, or find her a friend.

@Kitḫ Do your kids have any small protuberances just above the hairline?

1:29 AM
Well, now I'm confused
@Cerberus They're too little, aren't they?

Haha.
@simchona They show up only later?

I don't know who's a cat person any more. Not that, I guess, it's any of my business honestly

@Cerberus I'll check tomorrow. They're both sleeping right now.

@Cerberus I would think so. You know, coming of age.

@Kitḫ Smart thinking.

1:30 AM
I will also look for a tail.

@simchona Ah, I see. I didn't know this was a universal protuberance thing.

And a propensity to hold forks

@Kitḫ Right, they could go either way.

@simchona Damn. I hadn't thought of that. He's been wielding a fork for a couple of weeks now.
Very precocious.

Indeed.

1:31 AM
And adorable.
And annoying.

Has he set the house on fire yet?

Not yet.
We've hidden the matches.

Then you still have time.

Awwwwwww

1:34 AM
Does that look like a demon baby to you?
@Martha Thinking of you, honey!

Awww....
What is that little dark patch on his forehead?

@Cerberus What little...He is not a demon baby!

@Kitḫ Not even a good demon baby?

Maybe it's a daemon baby

Maybe a good demon baby.

1:38 AM
A fun little demon that pinches you occasionally when he needs food?

Yes, maybe a daemon baby.

Yay!

@Cerberus He bites. And whines and hollers.

He can jam airplanes!

daemon is just an alternative spelling of demon isn't it?

1:39 AM
@z7sgѪ No

it's basically the same thing

Let me find the question on it

it's not?

He would have prevented 9/11 if he had been there!

ooo a question!

1:39 AM
9
Q: What is the difference between "daemon" and "demon" in a religious context?

Mehper C. PalavuzlarIs there a difference between demon and daemon in a religious context?

The OED writes that daemon is simply an alternate spelling for demon.

@Cerberus Ouch.

I'm with the OED.

@z7sgѪ The OED can kiss my ass.
Stodgy old Brits think they can tell everyone what counts as English.

@Kitḫ it's just a book. you could sit on it i suppose.

1:40 AM
@z7sgѪ It's a big book. She'd be up pretty high

@Kitḫ Jam? Anti-air?

They can take their g-deasley tome and...

@Kitḫ But they do!
Britannia rules the waves!

i can't believe the OED could be wrong... my world is falling apart

@Cerberus Step out of the 19th century.

1:42 AM
@Kitḫ Never!
England!

@Cerberus Oh, I got it. Just a bit painful is all.

I'll be back in a bit. Shower.

yay!

groans

@Kitḫ OK will not mention again.

1:43 AM
the american empire is waning already anyway. just a flash in the pan.

There are more of us than you, you know.

there were more indians

So stop telling me that I am pronouncing "tomato" incorrectly!

divide and rule

@Kitḫ We won't if you will pronounce it tomahto.

1:45 AM
you mispronounced "tomarto"

You are so lucky that we find your accents captivating...

are you talking about the dutch accent now?
it does sound pretty cool i must admit

Um. I don't think I know what a Dutch accent sounds like.
I was referring to your Cockney.
If I may be so forward.

thanks, i don't speak like a cockney though, maybe more like hugh grant :(

Oh, how awful.

1:48 AM
i can't help it i'm afraid

;)

yes i know
hehe i'm listening to random dutch words

I think the "female" is mislabeled.
But that is a rather ticklish accent.
Much nicer than German.

@z7sgѪ Haha those sound very authentic!
@z7sgѪ You seriously like a Dutch accent? I hate it so much.

1:54 AM
It sounds like the ugliest accent in the world to me.
@z7sgѪ Hah but that is a southern accent. She lacks the hard g/ch.

@Cerberus well Dutch itself is a bit guttural and phlegmy but somehow the accents come out nice in English

@z7sgѪ Odd.
It sounds really flat and uninspired to me.

@z7sgѪ Must be like Austrian. Comes out all lilting and musical in English.

@Cerberus yeah i've done that onealready! i can also say s'Hertogenbosch semi-reasonably

2:00 AM
@z7sgѪ Can you!
With an accent from the place itself, or an ABN accent?
I'd really like to hear it: upload it!

@Kitḫ i can't remember Austrian so well. Swiss is very much like that though.

I think a Dutch accent in English is rather the opposite of an Austrian accent in German.
Dutch = flat

@Cerberus not with an accent it's just knowing the letters. my friend came from there and she laughed when us English tried to say it

Austrian = heavy, melodious
@z7sgѪ OK, well, do not hesitate to record it and upload your pronunciation! Would be cool.

heh, i have to go to bed!! ;)
maybe tomorrow

2:06 AM
Ok bai!

2:22 AM

Q: Adjectival form of the word 'aspect'?

JoeWhat if any if the adjectival form or complement of the word 'aspect'? I was thinking of using "aspectful" but it seems a bit ugly. Thanks in advance!

I -1ed until clarifications are provided. But, I learned a new word today.

user19161
2:34 AM
@simchona It's actually many books.

@Jasper Even better

user19161
@sim What were the removed messages about this time?

@Jasper Which ones?

The ones about the fish, probably.

user19161
@simchona The three where Cerb said no need to repeat.

user19161
2:38 AM
@Kitḫ What fish?

Oops. The Fish-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named!
Now I must to bed.

user19161
Can someone tell me what is going on? This is mysterious.

Good night!
@Jasper We were definitely not talking about A Fish Called Eric.
The fish's name was not Eric.

user19161
@Kitḫ Night!

user19161
@Kitḫ I have no idea what you are saying, nvm.

user19161
2:43 AM
Ah, no answer from anyone, very mysterious.

user19161
And the dog and cat talk has multiple interpretations too, so I shan't try to figure out.

user19161
@sim How often do you check that email of yours?

@Jasper Always.

user19161
@simchona I see. Well, I don't know what to say now, but I'll think about it first.

Hello and goodnight!

user19161
2:52 AM
@aediaλ Hello and goodnight too!

Must go to sleep. Tired today.

G'night @aedia!

3:06 AM
Hi @MrShinyandNew

@simchona good evening
what is going on in your neck of the woods

Not much. Back in school, so I'm surrounded by textbooks

Ah school. I miss those days. Life was simple then.
What kinds of courses are you taking?

Stats, public finance, intermediate macroecon, accounting, databases, and an English class

are you majoring in business or economics?

3:12 AM
Econ and CIS

CIS=computer information systems?

mhm

@simchona I get the impression that you are busy. I won't disturb your studying.

2 hours later…
5:04 AM
You there @cerb?
