Q: Does a "wedding reception" imply a meal?

FlimzyMaybe it's because I haven't been living in an English-speaking country for so long... or maybe because I'm a man, and just don't know these things... But does a wedding reception imply a meal? Or would a meal be described more explicitly on a wedding invitation? My feeling is that "Reception ...

Q: What is the other way to say "stay in touch"?

xEnOnIn one of the statements that I'm writing, I wanted to express the idea that the Internet has helped one to stay in touch with friends. I wrote it this way: It is undeniable that the Internet has helped people from losing friends that they don't have time to meet face-to-face. The problem w...

Bring it on.

@simchona what kind of someone? someone important? someone famous? someone who's mythical, or made of lego?
we gots all those here

I guess I'm asking for advice via email.

I may not have time to answer quickly because I have to go in about 20 mins, though.

@GraceNote Hello Grace Note, I thought of you when I saw this:
5 hours ago, by Mr. Shiny and New 安宇
https://secure.flickr.com/photos/tkh/6131969487/
on account of your avatar

6:40 PM
I'm... curious as to how you came to that image to link with me.
I mean, yes, she does have a skirt.

Well, it's like a lego rendition of the kinds of characters you have in your avatars. Or, that's what I see, anyway. maybe not the pose, or whatever.

It's the hair and the plant hat thing!

Pose ain't the issue too much.
I just would've been expecting more linked to an actual character I have used.

@GraceNote Aren't they all the same?

Ah. Well, I don't know any of the characters you use and I don't recognize that character that's in Lego. Have I made a horrible faux pas? Like when someone asks why Gandalf isn't in the Harry Potter movies?

6:45 PM
@MichaelMyers Well, the one big thing is that the LEGO construct there is from Ore no Imouto, which is an anime, while all of mine are from video games, but not a lot of people realize that.

(note: a friend of mine actually admitted to asking where Gandalf was halfway through one of the HP movies)

@GraceNote So I guess that would be a "yes" to Mr. Shiny and New's question.

It ain't a horrible faux pas.

Aieee! melts in shame

I mean, the "skirts or otherwise" still sticks.
And that's about the only other shared aspect of all my images.

6:47 PM
@GraceNote your avatars are (that I've seen) females drawn in the anime/manga style, and this lego creation is also that. Or am I digging a hole here?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 You're not digging a hole. It's "Images of video game entities where the depiction is female and is wearing a skirt or otherwise", which is pretty close since they are indeed drawn in anime/manga style.

@GraceNote While we're on the subject, there is a right time and a wrong time to use "ain't". It is never used in the same sentence as a foreign-sounding phrase unless that phrase is in Mexican Spanish.

@MichaelMyers To wit, I also abuse all y'all in the same fashion of mixing it with foreign language.

@MichaelMyers I think you need to get some verification on that, perhaps by posting a Q that simchona can research when she's supposed to be studying.

"All y'all" itself is not acceptable to me, although I do know people who use "y'all" as a singular pronoun.

6:52 PM
If it makes you happier, Arda started getting on my case about using "Nicely" as a replacement for the phrase "That's nice to hear"

It does not make me happy that you use it in that way, no.
That's what "Nice!" is for.
If you're going to misuse the language, misuse it right.

I see, I see

@GraceNote How... how does that even work?
Do I say, "I had a good day today!" and then you say "Nicely!"? Because that makes, like, no sense.

@MrShiny Another way to think of this is, regardless of whether or not there is a big link to my image, I still liked the construction there so I'm quite happy to receive the link. ♪
@aediaλ It works... nicely.

@GraceNote whew!

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Why simchona in particular?

@MichaelMyers she's been answering that kind of question lately. In the old days that'd be a nohat thing. But now school's started so she said she's back off a bit.

@MichaelMyers Monsieur, I ain't seen all y'all here beatin' her t' the punch at it.

Q: Is there a difference between saying a place is "well-lighted" versus "well-lit" or is it just stylistic?

Jeff YatesI feel that "well-lit" means there is enough light whereas "well-lighted" implies someone actually set-up the lighting and did it well. Of course, really, "lighted" is just the regular version of the irregular "lit", so I suppose they should mean the same thing assuming we accept "lighted". Wha...
