@RegDwight: The evil USSR isn't very successful. We can take it!

@Kos, @RegDwight, whichever of you wakes up first might like to tidy up the comment exchange on this answer. Now we've sorted out what each other meant, most of the comments don't need to stay there.

Heeeey @Cerberus
@Rhodri

Hai!

Hi!

Remember me?

12:56 AM
I do, <s>Boob</s>explorer. Not well, but I do. Which is an improvement on usual, I can tell you!

@Rhodri that's enough for me =D

Damn, how are you supposed to do strike-through in this markdown?
I'm too tired to figure it out right now.
Sorry to flee, but it's 2am here and I need my beauty sleep.
G'night all.

@Rhodri sleep well

Hmm did you have the same avatar?
Bye Rhod!

No
you just memorize users' avatars ?

1:02 AM
I'm sorry, my memory is rather bad... your name rings a bell, but I can't really remember when we met...

i thought the only one who will remember me is you
my nickname was "Boob" , rings a louder bell?

Ah!
Certainly I remember you!
But how am I supposed to know that it is you, if you have a different avatar and a different name?
It is like saying, "hi, I changed my name and had a total body transplant: recognize me?"

I'm not good at impersonate
why you're complaining when you refuse to recognize me
but it's me in a totally new mode, I thought I was more than a name for you

Sure, but how should I have recognized you?

@Miss

Q: Which comes first: cat or dog?

WhirlwinWhich comes first in a sentence? I know some word pairs such as bacon and eggs, where bacon always comes first. E.g: Make me bacon and eggs for dinner, honey. Cats and dogs are the two most common pets I know of. What is the preferred order? 1. Dogs are superior. Don't put dogs and cats toget...

Q: What is the etymology of "hautboys"?

Ham and BaconStrangely, Etymonline.com doesn't give an etymology. I looked up Dictionary.com, and came up with: 1565–75; < Middle French hautbois, equivalent to haut high ( see haughty) + bois wood ( see bush1 ) So, how did this word "high wood" come to mean oboe?

Is it the International Joke Question Day already?

Hallo zusammen !
oder vielleicht besser Hallo allein ?

Zusammen? Ich bin alleine!
Haha Jinx!

jinx auf deutsch ?

Sure.
You can drop the E, too.

Verkehrte Welt! Im GLU-Chat wird Englisch gesprochen, im ELU-Chat Deutsch!

Was nützen sie In Deutschland, Kaninchen?

Woas nett.

Ich war gerade in Paris, und an der Hotelrezeption wollten die nur Englisch und... Russisch mit mir reden.

lets play a simple game with uiser

Dabei wollte ich mein Französisch auffrischen!

is that right sentence?
lets play a simple game with uiser

@Miss "Let's", with an apostrophe. And I have no idea what "uiser" is supposed to mean.

ahh sorry
i meant user

9:29 AM
Okay. In that case, you're probably missing an article.

so "Let's play a simple gave with users "

Let's play a simple game with the user.

ahh i see

Or plural, yes.

why the
hmm i see

9:29 AM
@RegDwight Yeah German is quite unusual in France. When you consider the average level of English anyway...

you meant with plural we use "the"

@AlainPannetier Nah, I wanted to talk French!

ok ok thanks

So it went like this: "Bonjour!" - "Hello!", or "Quatre-cent sept, svp" - "Here's your key!"

@RegDwight I've actually witnessed some quite acceptable French recently by @Cerberus and @Vitaly of late.

9:31 AM
I just mistyped sept as cette. I want to cry.
@Miss It depends on what you want to say.
It could be "the user", "a user", "users", "the users". Some of those are more likely than others, but we can't read your mind.

I want to cry when I read some of my posts in EL&U. One of the worst ones was typing witch instead of which. Not even on Halloween day!

A: British upper-class pronunciation of words like "what" and "when"

nohatOnly a few dialects maintain the distinction between /hw/ and /w/, that is, distinguishing witch from which, wale from whale, and wine from whine. The WH sound, a voiceless labiovelar approximant, is written as /hw/ or sometimes /ʍ/ in the International Phonetic Alphabet. The W sound is a voiced ...

So, just start pronouncing witch as hwitch, problem solved! :P

Old English was "hwilc" (and other spellings) but my fingers are not that bad... yet.

I want to say that "Let's play a simple game with users"

Sure, you can say that.

9:39 AM
and what about "Let's play a simple game with the users"

You can say that, too.
It just doesn't mean the exact same thing.

I am confuse with the"

What users are we talking about?
What is the context?

like public

Are you developing an application and would like to play a game with its users, or what?

9:41 AM
actually i developed a simple game using console application
and i posted it on my wall
I want to keep my title as given above

And now you would like to play it with... users of what?

hmm./..
well any user who would like to use it on face book

Also, why not just say "Let's play a simple game!" and leave it at that?

hmmm yes a better and simple
i agree ...:)

@Miss Well, in that case you could just say "Let's play a simple game with Facebook users".

9:43 AM
hehheh
hmmm
I think this is cool..."Let's play a simple game!"

Don't they have a special term for "Facebook users" yet? Facebookers? Facebouquets?
@Miss Sure, short and sweet.

yes @regdwight...:)

In French "Fesses de bouc"

Fesses de bouc

C'est bon, c'est bon, Géramont, Géramont!

9:45 AM
@AlainPannetier — Huh? Are you sure it wasn't someone else, because I have never spoken French here?

cute
well my English is getting weak ..:(

@Vitaly My fault. @Alain actually talked about some Viatly, and I corrected it to Vitaly.
Cendre sur ma tête!

@Vitaly, don't tell me I have to read all these transcripts again.

May 27 at 19:30, by RegDwight
What, you didn't read the entire transcript????

yesterday, by Jez
les français, ils simplement ont besoin d'apprendre utiliser Google Translate...
that was @Jez...

9:50 AM
Well, the creator of FLU better speak some decent French...

@RegDwight, I meant Vitaly. I'm the one who made the confusion.
I dread the day when FL&U will open. Most of the French forums haunted by native speakers are full of lower than common ideas expressed with poor vocabulary and spelled in a terrible way.

Ain't that the same in every language ever?
German and Russian forums are exactly like that.

If I thought that were the case, I wouldn't be visiting this space every now and then...

Mar 6 at 15:30, by RegDwight
@Robusto Absolutely. I can put up a collection of videos of idiot Germans or Russians anytime. Most people are not bright. Anywhere. Just think YouTube comments. And then think how these are comments by people who can figure out how to switch on a PC, start a browser, navigate to YouTube, and post a comment. Them are not the least educated folks on the planet.

This forum has some very interesting moments
And, I must say witty and cultivated people (from what I can grab ;-).

Jul 1 at 19:06, by RegDwight
Huhuh, you said swallow, huhuh.
There you have your cultivated wittiness.
Anyhows, lemme check what this thing called "wrok" or "owrk", or whatever it is spelled, has on offer today...

OK. TTYL

10:15 AM
Hm... looks like homework to me:

Q: "He is to resist the vulgar prosperity that retrogrades ever to barbarism"

poorenglishIn the quote, "He is to resist the vulgar prosperity that retrogrades ever to barbarism" What does resist mean? to tolerate to protest What does vulgar prosperity mean? obscene prosperity ill mannered prosperity What does ever mean? always occasionally What does retrogrades...

Check out the options he provides.
Quite telling, if you ask me.

> Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion and the largest Christian denomination, with estimates of 81-85% of the population belonging to this faith in the Philippines.

Looks like Russia.

> Based on self-identification data,[citation needed] the population of Russia includes 70.2% of Russian Orthodox Christians

Self-identification is easy.
(I say that in my capacity as an avid self-identifier.)

the Filipinos live in the slums (slums in Manila pictured above) in self-built “houses,” 4 square metres for a family of 10+, why? because they aren't getting involved in family planning, why? because contraception is “a sin against the Catholic church”

10:26 AM
That's simplistic, innit.
Those people would live in the exact same conditions if they subscribed to Scientology.

I don't know about the conditions, but they would at least have 4 square metres per 2 people, not 10+

Italian, French, and German Catholics are happily using condoms and in fact all available forms of family planning.
Different cultures are different. You can't pin it down on this exact one thing.
The world doesn't work like that.

oh my, they sin against the church?? aren't they afraid of eternal weeping and gnashing of teeth?

Obviously not.
And that's the point.
Everyone has a choice. Even catholics.

I dunno, the Filipino people in that BBC video claim that they aren't doing so primarily because it's a “sin against the Catholic church”
and they would be doing so, as they claim, because of “economical benefits,” hadn't it been for the church
and when a woman finally decided to get some family planning help, she kept saying that she “knew it was a sin against the church”

10:32 AM
See, the "economical benefits" part is crucial.
If you're living in a slum, children are your social security and your retirement plan.
No matter which religion you subscribe to.

Jez
the XML spec. it's horrible.

Look around the world.

Jez
trying to figure out what namespace i should use takes days of reading

@RegDwight — one kid who got education is more of social security and retirement plan than 10+ of them without any education

But the thinking goes, 10 children = 10 times as many chances that one of them gets education.

10:35 AM
and just why they don't have the money to pay for a single kid's education? because they have to feed 10 of them
@RegDwight education isn't free

Well, the funny thing is that that's only obvious to outsiders.

the more kids, the fewer chances any of them gets education

Hindsight is 20/20.

it's not. a Flipino in the BBC video doesn't qualify as an outsider.

Look, why are we discussing the family planning of a random person on the other side of the planet? It's her choice. If she can live with it, we are not in the business of not being able to live with it.

10:37 AM
because religion is at fault.

And you telling that to me because...?

because you, too, should oppose religion. :P

Because that would change that particular person's miserable situation how?

maybe not that particular person's, and maybe not now, but think about 20 years from now on

20 years from now, nobody will effing care what I think about religion, or any issue for that matter, just as nobody does now.
That woman in the video doesn't even know that I exist. And if she did, that would make zero difference.

10:42 AM
suppose you deconvert a person a year, and each of those people get to deconvert another person a year
wait no, make that two people a year

Why don't you start with deconventing people who actually suffer?

how many people would you effectively deconvert by 2031, starting now?

Why are you deconventing people in this chat?

directly and indirectly

Lack of religion has been tried, and it failed miserably.
People need religion.
Opium for the masses.
If they don't pray to Jesus, they pray to Stalin.

10:44 AM
i'd like them praying to science better

And there is no lesser of two evils.

and medicine as part of science

@Vitaly Then it's not enough to just say, "pray to science". You have to actually pay for their education.
Churn out some money, dude.
Because talk is cheap.

see, if they revere science, there's a chance they will actually donate to it
which gets us better medicine and technology

How do you donate to science?

10:46 AM
how do you donate to the church?

Easy. Find the next church.
Spend some money there.
Easy as pie.

Jez
@RegDwight Credulous people need religion. Many of us don't.

okay, so convert all churches to centres of mass education
and spend some money there
:P

That I would like to see you pulling off.

easy as pie © RegDwight

Jez
10:47 AM
'easy as pie'
has the etymology of that been asked yet?
or can i get some free rep for asking it

@Vitaly No, that is not easy as pie. Go turn a single church to a center of mass education. I'll wait.
@Jez There is no such thing as free rep.

@RegDwight — But first you need to deconvert 2 people each year for 20 years. And them deconverting other people too.

No. I don't need to do jack.
I do enough already.

Yes you do.

Which brings us back to square one.

10:49 AM
If the population becomes mostly non-religious, turning churches to centres of mass education actually becomes easy as pie.

Hasn't worked in the 70+ years of Soviet rule.

are you saying they were mostly non-religious?

I am saying that they were praying to different gods instead.
So the Red Corner was gone, but instead you'd have Lenin's Corner.
And instead of visiting a church, you'd visit the Mausoleum.
And the parades, etc.

really? so in 1991 the vast majority of the population simultaneously switched from praying to those gods to praying to the Judeo-Christian god?

Well, I've witnessed countless people pull off just that.

10:53 AM
things like that don't happen.

The facts are all there in the open.

which means that during the Soviet era they already were religious, and in xianely religious.

Which is exactly what I am saying all along.
They were praying to different Gods, but they were religious.
And the churches are still there.

no, you are talking about some “different gods”

They didn't even dare blow up St. Basil's.

10:55 AM
i'm saying that they were undercover xians all along

Some of them, sure. But not all of them.
All those children growing up were taught by the system to pray to the new Gods.
The old Gods didn't even get mentioned.

Why are you not speaking Russian?

And after three generations getting brainwashed, christianity still isn't dead.
@Cerberus This room is incomprehensible enough as is.

And @Reg, those stupid Parisiens won't speak French with me either! Our French must suck...
@RegDwight I suppose it is...

Besides, I have learned that when I'm online, I can't communicate effectively in any language other than English.

10:58 AM
And how was Paris? Go to the Louvre?
Really? How so?

Nah, we didn't go inside anything.
We spent our time visiting all the landmarks and stuff.

Non pas aux églises?

Hey!
Just in time!

Oh, shi...

10:59 AM
I knew the devil would pop up!

@Cerberus An Italian friend of mine made the same observation. In fact, many of my friends have. On the Internet, communicating in English somehow becomes easier than communicating in your native tongue.

Try a word starting with an M

Or, in tis case, the cute kid.

@Cerberus Mais bien sûr!

Même pas?
I knew it!

10:59 AM
You won't have me writing it.
