@RegDwight — Toujours.

@Jez I've come to the conclusion that somewhere, somehow, every word I say will probably have some other meaning than I intend.

Jul 20 at 15:40, by Martha
What is this "work" that you speak of?

@GraceNote — What is the meaning of "meaning"?

Just go with my motto, people.

@RegDwight I know, I know. So sorry for the profanity.

@RegDwight — Because we all know what the self-reference of "self-reference" is.

Jez
17:03?!!! how can it only be 17:03.

@Kit I'm reading it. It deals with a lot of why we hate moistness and the concept of it.

Jez
27 minutes still.

Kit
4:04 PM
Although I think the assumption that women don't like "moist" because of the relationship to female arousal is stupid.

@Jez I do love half day fridays!

When I think of "moist", I think of dampness, of grogginess and sliminess, so I don't usually like it as a descriptive term, and consequently don't usually like elements that are described as moist.

What I think of.

I never really thought of that as disliking the word, though

Kit
I hate the way it feels when I say it.
I certainly don't have any hang ups about female arousal.

4:06 PM
Can't say I have that much of a strong reaction to it.

Kit
In fact, describing such as "moist" enrages me.

@MattEllen I suppose I was lucky, since the fields around our house were mostly pasture.

@Kit the diphthong /ɔɪ/ or sometimes written /ɔj/ ... I don't like "moist" either really but I'm not sure that's the sound as much as the meaning.
paulmeier.com/ipa/diphthongs.html also fun for more BrE/AmE audio examples - this one they're all the same guy demonstrating.

haʊ naʊ bɹaʊn caʊ?

I'm amazed at how long it's been since I've heard that exercise.

I suppose /ɔɪ/ is one of the longest trips across the vowel square, maybe that's why some people don't like it.

We don't have many oi's in English, do we?

@aedia Y'know, when the whole "moist" thing came up, I kept trying to think of words that rhymed like voiced, and while I thought of "boisterous" I forgot hoist and foist existed.

Coke. Ahh.

Kit
I like boisterous, though.

Funny.

Kit
What else is like oi? ei? What about that one?

Buoy doesn't rhyme...
@Kit ei I think is going to be far more prevalent.
I'd go more in the direction of, say, au or ui.

Kit
4:52 PM
@GraceNote I thought the same thing.

@GraceNote buoy rhyme with boy in BrE (most of the time)

Kit
@GraceNote Yes, au is good. I like that dipthong.
@MattEllen Yes, it's boo-ee in AmE and boy in RP.
According to Wiktionary.

Though I can't think of a word other than ennui, right now, that actually pronounces ui differently than just a long U.

Kit
@GraceNote Of course, I have a ton of French words that just crowded into my head.

4:55 PM
There is suite, but... honestly that breaks all manner of general English rule that I ever learned in school.

Kit
And can be pronounced "suit" right?
Depending on what you are talking about?

Sweet
One way or another :-)

I've only heard suite pronounced as a homophone to sweet.

me too

Kit
I've heard "suit" for talking about a set of furniture, e.g. a bedroom suite.

4:59 PM
I think "suite" and "sweet" are IPA'd like /swit/ (the /i/ is like "ee" in "bee")

@aedia Exactly, which is the issue when it comes to rules.

Kit
@MattEllen I like the fishwife question.

@Kit I can say that I can logically understand that, but I can't say I've ever actually heard it in that fashion.

@Kit I think he doesn't realize what skeptical means?

I think "follow" when I read it, so it's probably French.

Oh, actually, /swiːt/ (the little dots are for long sound, I forgot them).

I think using suit for /swiːt/ is just wrong spelling/confusion...

Kit
5:03 PM
@GraceNote I wonder.

@Kit He has firm hold of the wrong end of he stick. Also a prescriptivist attitude to what is and isn't a word.
