I'm a member there.
Why do you have to debate joining the site?
It's like 2 button clicks.

Because then I have a zillion accounts to manage :P
One account really, but I like things neat and tidy.
And I'd almost never post.

You don't have zillions...
I'm on 29 sites...

Q: Multi-layer PyQt4 image viewer performance improvement

AjeanI have written a functional GUI program using PyQt4, and I'm looking for some feedback because it's not as fast as I would like. I don't do swift :/

Nor do I, but I have an accept on a Swift answer.

12:48 AM
How?

Perhaps not, but you can take my word that it's broken, right? Because there aren't 5 people who "do" Swift to close vote it.

A: Using Grand Central Dispatch to fetch data from Parse.com and update UI asynchronously

Hosch250Comments //execute slow task Comments should say why the code is the way it is, not a generic comment that doesn't tell us anything constructive. @IsmaelMiguel Generic issues that anybody can see. No other answers.

I just turn my sound off when I don't want pings.

But I want the pings, I wasn't ready for them
I was looking for something to listen on youtube

This is a paradox. We have to tell you we are going to ping you without pinging you before we ping you?

@nhgrif Is there nothing else to say about the code, @nhgrif?

12:52 AM
NO!
I just wasn't ready for them
Usually nobody pings me
And sometimes I get 1 ping that lightly scares me
But you sent 2 in a row
I wasn't ready

@JeroenVannevel Well, I would have written if else {} instead of if { else {} }, but that was kind of minor.

@JeroenVannevel I might re-address it if he reposts a cleaned-up version. There's some Swift/iOS specific stuff. But I really hate the current form of the question...
Plus, it's a Parse question.

@nhgrif bye
and hello

That Swift/iOS specific stuff is 95% of the value in a review

I disagree.
If you're still writing code that looks that terrible, you need to get stuck with some answers that focus on the formatting.

12:55 AM
I really don't like these, as you aptly call it, "Generic issues that anybody can see". That's a question marked as answered with something that can be done equally well trough an automated bot

Writing code that' easy to read makes spotting the other issues easier.
I didn't mark it as answered.
I wouldn't have marked it as answered either.
But it's an important answer.

I didn't mark it as accepted. I just wrote it.

@CaptainObvious VTC for broken code

You don't have to upvote it. You could even downvote it @JeroenVannevel, if you think we should discourage those sorts of answers. I think it'd be a major mistake to discourage those sorts of answers though.
And if you disagree, it's only because you've not had to maintain the same code that I have to maintain...

12:58 AM
I do my discouraging by complaining here in chat because I've only seen it done by people from here. I just disagree with the constant desire to get questions marked as done when there are plenty of issues left and when you look at the answer, it's a stylistic thing like this

Whether or not the question is marked as done is 100% up to the asker.

Would you disagree with an answer telling someone to use a loop instead of 9 ifs?
That can be done by a bot too...

If you want to post a better, addressing iOS/Swift specific things, you can.

Part of this is from the eyes of a 3rd party person that sees the same generic answer all the time
@nhgrif The asker noticed an answer and things his problems are addressed

@JeroenVannevel accepting an answer - or not, is entirely up to the OP

1:00 AM
Here's the thing though, @JeroenVannevel ... I'm the only real Swift answerer apart from occasional input from MartinR.

he does not know someone with no Swift experience writes this and focuses on the "cleanup" aspect solely

I don't feel like answering every Swift question.
And I don't want to answer questions that have that many major problems with issues you consider minor.

I could state that I'll leave the Swift-specific stuff to others. I've done that type of thing before.

I think it's important that every question that gets posted with code that looks like that gets pounded with answers addressing purely stylistic things.

@nhgrif I understand and respect that, I'm not saying you should either. I just disagree with the way we present ourselves this way. It brings down the quality of answers I expect on CR

1:02 AM
Making your code look nice & consistent is something you can do from day 1, no matter how little experience you have. And it's something you can do in every language (except PHP), no matter how much experience you have with that language.
It's the most important thing to get right too... because that alone is what makes the difference in spotting the other problems with the code.

@Hosch250 that would work to tell the OP "I might not have seen other potentially important issues that someone more familiar with the language might"

Whether you're looking at it yourself or asking someone else to look at it.
If @Hosch250 wants to make it more clear he's not giving an "a-okay" stamp to everything else, that's up to him.

@Mat'sMug But the OP by definition does not know when the pain points are addressed, reviewers do. There is value in stylistic answers but the way I see it presented here is "these are your issues: x, y and z". There's no mention of "by the way, I actually don't know anything about the actual language". That's what I look for in my reviews: detailed knowledge about edge cases, conventions or language considerations that I don't know yet

But no one should read a Code Review answer and assume that if something wasn't commented on then it's okay.

^^

1:04 AM
Even if I am considered the site's Swift expert, you shouldn't read any answer of mine and assume that anything I don't address is something you did perfectly.

@nhgrif If I post code and I see an answer with x-amount of upvotes and nothing else, then I assume the problems in my code are adressed and that's a fair assumption

1) I miss things.
2) I intentionally don't address all points in a single answer.
2.a) I sometimes forget to post the other answer.
3) As good as I might be, I'm not the final authority on idiomatic Swift.

Done.

It's not a fair assumption.

@Hosch250 thanks :)

1:05 AM
For the list I just posted and many other reasons.
In fact, we could see contradictory answers even.
One answer recommending C# style braces and another recommending correct-style braces.

...

That alone is evidence that stuff uncommented on doesn't imply it's a-okay

I should probably be finishing the Regex search/replace thing, but I need help with the UI.
If anyone makes me a UI, I'll implement it and do the rest.

Alright, maybe it's not a good assumption to make. I think it's yet another thing I will disagree with most people here

And give them credit on the commit.

1:08 AM
@JeroenVannevel If you answer a C# question, should we assume you've addressed all possible imaginable problems with the code, and the result of implementing all of your recommendations would be perfect code that doesn't need further review?
(or perhaps you didn't address issues existing answers already addressed)

I also sometimes (often) leave room for other answers, and I think it's good for the site to do that.

Q: Jack of All Trades, Master of None - Let's work together to offer ultimately better content, faster

CuriousProgrammerNhgrif pointed out a great idea: Teamwork "I think it's probably best if the question instead has several good answers that each address a specific topic. The result will be that no single answer is complete, but every problem is addressed between all the answers." Alright, so that ...

Given that in Swift/Objective-C, I can't typically count on someone filling in the gaps of my answers, I will usually make comprehensive answers. Sometimes though, I break it into multiple things.

When I post answers, I try to address the most pressing issue I see in a question.

anyone know a pascal ide and compiler?

1:12 AM
And sometimes there are multiple "most pressing" issues.
In the Swift question @Hosch250 answered, the most pressing issue was the horrendous formatting & naming issues. And I didn't feel like answering it.

@IsmaelMiguel ideone.com

But anyone who can write clean code could've written the same answer I would've written as my first answer to that question. And @Hosch250 did.

Alex11223How to combine Free Pascal compiler and NP++ (or maybe other editor, Vim, Geany, ...)? i.e. I want something like IDE: compiling, running from NP++, list of errors\warnings. This IDE is only for graphical development

@Olaf Enhancements ?? This is your second time you are being highly improbable. Being unable to fill drawing is a problem with a severe solution.. what happens if server returns a 5xx error code?
The following is a list of Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) response status codes. This includes codes from IETF internet standards as well as other IETF RFCs, other specifications and some additional commonly used codes. The first digit of the status code specifies one of five classes of response; the bare minimum for an HTTP client is that it recognises these five classes. The phrases used are the standard examples, but any human-readable alternative can be provided. Unless otherwise stated, the status code is part of the HTTP/1.1 standard (RFC 7231). > 418 I'm a teapot (RFC 2324)
This code was defined in 1998 as one of the traditional IETF April Fools' jokes, in RFC 2324, Hyper Text Coffee Pot Control Protocol, and is not expected to be implemented by actual HTTP servers. The RFC specifies this code should be returned by tea pots requested to brew coffee.

If anyone want to take a look
It really took me a ton of courage to show that piece of code.
The bad things you have to do to get things to work on your way... :/

@Duga That hurts deep down in my soul.

Pimping an extraordinary Q&A.

Q: Embedded FizzBuzz

SirPythonRecently, I have started to enter the realms of embedded systems programming. And, as my first major project, I thought I'd do the obvious: FizzBuzz. However, this is a little different: this is a game. Like my FizzBuzz Challenge, the user must enter either Fizz, Buzz, FizzBuzz, or the number i...

Q: Making code more efficient (for loops?) - Python

SophieSarfI want to make my code more efficient by instead of repeating my code again for level two, having the only change as the random numbers change from 1-10 to 1-100 I can make these a variable making max_number = 10 for level one and max_number = 100 for level two and use the same code, halfing the ...

@RubberDuck Nice one :)

@Mast That question is really interesting. Sadly, I'm extremelly limited in my knowledge
I though I knew a lot, and I agree
But with time, I forgot most of it
Visual Basic (.net and vb6), VBA, C, C#, Pascal, TI-Basic ...
All forgotten

I could do Objective-C and Batch Script once upon a time

I've never tried Objective-C
I wouldn't mind learning Assembly

run, while you still can It was alright
Get TIS-100, if you like

How do you do that strikethough here?

@Donald.McLean Greetings, User.

I always sucked using assembly. Low level languages and I just don't get along.

Well, that's why I wrote (the specification of) Corky, so that you can have a feel of it's headaches
The idea is an almost-readable bytecode language that is meant to be translated/compiled to/from Javascript or PHP
Also, it can be interpreted
It's easy to parse, the syntax is really hard to miss
Anything followed by : will be considered a token

Feel free to write a compiler

11:46 AM
I was going to write the interpreted, but there are things missing
One of them is the syntax to create objects
And arrays

Since I found Scala, I have no longer felt any particular desire to create my own language.

Why's that?

@EthanBierlein I just love how they swap between PHP, CSS, Objective-C and what I can assume is Scala

I haven't even figured out how to use all the features of Scala yet. Plus it's got some features that make it perfect for creating Domain Specific Languages.

@goncalopp Might I quickly ask, what's the difference between SE and codereview? Both seem to want to avoid chit chat/opinion but rather to focus on code questions? noob query but I only want to put my questions in the right forum. Thanx — Dee 38 secs ago

That sounds great!
But, I'm looking at it and it scares me

Underloved answer here.

A: Updating a .csv file

martineauYou can't really avoid creating a temporary dictionary if you want to quickly update the contents of the entire file the way you want. However you can speed things by not using csv.DictReader and csv.DictWriter because they require building a separate temporary dictionary for each row processed. ...

The easiest way to learn Scala is gradually. It's more an evolution of Java than not, so just pretend like it's an advanced form of Java and gradually incorporate the advanced features over time.
