99 less 30 is 69, unless I made a mistake...

It's not enough to be on topic for SO. There might be a way to rework the question, but it needs a lot of work. If you want to ask a broader question, you'll need to clean this up a lot by going through the research and organizing your thoughts, confusion, and concerns. (You might end up with multiple questions, and it might end up being a better fit for Programmers.) If you just want your existing approach critiqued for bugs or things you might have missed, Code Review would be appropriate. (They have very strict guidelines. Read through the Help if you even consider going there.) — jpmc26 56 secs ago

I wonder if moving all my programs into one folder to get rid of this bloody nesting in my start menu will break them.

I just wanna ask; If you want a code review on a code pattern, where do you turn?

You disguise it.
Write real code and hint in the post you're not sure about your pattern.

Yeah, polish it to look like you want something bigger.

Part of CR is you need to allow a review on all aspects of your code.
So don't ask about purely your pattern.
Write real code, write some context and put it up for review. Just hint at the pattern and if it's totally the wrong pattern to use, somebody will pick it up anyway.

@IsmaelMiguel The servo is definitely FUBAR, but the rest works now, yes :)

@Mast And the code works as well?

That kind of was by design.

That shouldn't be hard

Indeed.

Yea, I had something like that in the original code.

I currently am at work, so, I don't have the code here now

@DavidG this is not a valid reason to close a question. Just because it may be a better fit for another site it's not automatically off-topic for stackoverflow. Please use the existing close-reasons where possible (too broad comes to mind)... — Vogel612 2 mins ago

@IsmaelMiguel That's done client side by sending the next instruction when the first is complete. If it's too fast, it will most likely fail. But that's out of scope, it now works as intended.

The code now runs as is, there are technically no bugs because it runs fine. I am indeed just looking for how to optimize the code, and want to find a better formula to calculate score. Maybe this is more suited to Code Review. Thanks. — ethanzh 12 secs ago

@CaptainObvious It's asking us to write a code to prevent SQL injections.

10:57 AM
@IsmaelMiguel That's actually very good advice.

@Mast Really? o.O

@CaptainObvious VTC'd and commented.
@IsmaelMiguel Yea. As said, disguise it.
Don't make it look like a pattern, write real code.
Make the code do stuff.
Let the stuff be reviewed and big chance somebody will notice your pattern.

That was exactly the idea, but using bad puns

Depending on the language though, but on Java/Python/C++ it's easy to say where people are doing things the wrong way.

PHP and Javascript is hard.
But easy to detect if someone messes with prototypes

11:01 AM
It's easy to say when people do things the wrong way when the language actually has an accepted way to do things.

@Morwenn Thank you! You read my mind.

@Morwenn Someone disliking PHP there? ;)

@skiwi Not really, but it's more of a language to get things done, not to overthink your design.

Heh, design

11:03 AM
@Morwenn That

That said, I also consider Python to be a language to get things done. But it has an official style guide which hints that its designers want people to right good code and that there is a way to do it.

I find it hard to read pretty much everything that's not Java or C#

About PHP:
> There is code, it sort of works, that’s what we go with, that’s always been the default. It doesn’t always lead to consistency but it does lead to getting the features and actually being able to do something. […] at least it gets you there. […] We’d rather have an ugly feature than not having a feature at all.

You can easily code in some languages, but it's a hell to maintain
In other languages it's harder to code, but way easier to maintain

Can you provide examples?

11:08 AM
Java is harder to code while Python, Javascript and PHP are easier to code in my opinion

@Morwenn Python has a tendency to survive for many years, which makes it worthy of a review.

C and C++ are just hard to code and hard to maintain :P

Q: I'm designing a Javascript jquery plug-in to pick the year and month for an input

user3784864It's a little ropey but purposefully verbose. I'm after a little feedback before to help me go though it and make it really swish. with animations ect. It's a drop-down month picker, that lets users navigate to the right month and year, whilst keeping the correct year format. I'm also trying to ...

@skiwi I once saw some Visual C++ code. I almost wanted to run away.

@skiwi What languages are hard to code but easy to maintain in your opinion?

11:10 AM
@skiwi Let's say that it's easy to write unmaintainable code. But you can also write maintainable code. I generally don't have any problems reading again what I wrote months/years ago.

@Mast That would be Java and C#, especially in bigger projects
When looking at existing code I don't really want to be figuring out what types all the variables are
But when writing code you generally don't want to care about it either

Java has the big advantage to be rather simple for what it does. It's hard to totally misuse it features or use them for purposes they weren't designed for.

@skiwi Actually I do. I prefer strong, explicit typing.

Trust me, sometimes you don't want to know what your type is. Only what you can do with it.

@Mast I'm still not sure which I actually prefer
In Groovy you can get things done pretty quickly, but it does seem harder to maintain than Java
But dealing with JSON in Java is just a big pain...

11:15 AM
@Morwenn yea like totally.....
not.
You can misuse java just like you can misuse PHP / JS / X
you just have to try hard enough...

Trust me, you don't want to know that your expression is actually a MatAdd<MatMul<Matrix<Real>, Matrix<Real>>, MatMul<Matrix<Real>, Matrix<Real>>>.

Or not try at all

You only want to know that it can be used as a Matrix<Real>.

that looks like a nice design problem...
because an expression is a value

@Morwenn Isn't that where interfaces are for though?

11:17 AM
^ that

@Vogel612 I didn't say you couldn't misuse it. I am trying to say that it makes it harder than other languages.

it doesn't...

@Vogel612 You obviously never heard of expression templates then :p

Ravin ShahIn Systems programming lab, I was given to make a program with above aim. depends on what you define "misuse" as... but I'd say storing everything in a Map<String, Object> that doesn't even implement the Map interface comes close..

11:18 AM
@skiwi That's a problem concepts will partly solve. You say "I take any type that acts like this" and you're done.
With the advantage that the said type does not have to explicity "implement" the concept, only to abide to its rules.

If we want to talk about bad concepts, lets talk about Javascript's prototype-based design, where everything is an object, and objects are instances of themselves. (In a very crude way)
It amazes me that Javascript doesn't eat your RAM with so many circular references.

Except when the edit craps out on my grammar.
Let's say that I write: "This is the code I've made for fun"
Ok, that's a garbage sentence.
Then someone edits it to: "This is code I've made for fun"
Now, the gammar is screwed up!
What do I do? Change it to: "I made this code for fun", even though the fun is gone.
But that is the only type of edit I complain about.

@IsmaelMiguel What's wrong with that sentence?

"This is code"

Yes?

That's what's wrong! We all know it is code.

11:39 AM
I think it's better than "this is the code"
Could be shortened to "I've made this for fun"

It's butchered in the context. And feels like I'm telling you "What is code". Like if you didn't knew it already.
Yes, it could, but it wasn't.

Bad English
I was Jamalized and left with "This was code I've made just simply for fun!"
And then I've edited again. With proper grammar and meaning.

@insidesin I'm trying to help people write better questions/enforce the rules of this site. The comments are from this meta, using the AutoReviewComments script. — jacwah 20 mins ago
@jacwah You're really not, you're just posting the same copy paste everywhere. If that was intended behaviour, the site would do it itself. — insidesin 9 mins ago

@Mast By the way, I'm not sure if my posted code gets the 201 cycle counts... or if it's actually getting 240. The UI is confusing now that I look back at it.

SO isn't really an appropriate place for design/style discussions like this. I suggest you write up the code that actually demonstrates the two forms you're talking about, and post them to codereview.stackexchange.com for commentary. — Barmar 30 secs ago
