02:01
YES WE HAVE NO LIFE WHATS IT TO YOU
no bernard and fender are still here
i was bitching about how cornell sucks
@ACuriousMind Have you had Flensburger?
@BernardMeurer Flens is nice
It has "the Plöpp"
@ACuriousMind Yeah, it's probably my favorite bee
I actually have to leave soon and go to Uris or something
need to write this draft n stuff
02:02
Fender, go to Thumpty tonight
What's Uris?
@ACuriousMind Yeah beers with corks to pop are amazing :P
a very ugly building
Dude I hate Thumptys
that place is a cess pool
yah, i hear they have coke
02:03
they have everything
like lying around in lines
more than you can dream of
do they really?
but they also have fucking rats
i should just ask
nah, my friend is in Thumpty
02:03
cess?
they rave well
and just general disgustingness in the air
yeah it's charmingly trashy
lot of drugs
their rave tonight is suppose to be good
@BernardMeurer I don't really have a favourite beer, most are fine. just don't drink Oettinger.
You should go to the basement shows they have at Cayuga Lodge those are pretty fun
02:05
having a preference for beer is irrelavant in college. you drink whats at the frats...
@ACuriousMind Never had Oettinger
Thumpty?
and the place isn't as danky as Thumptys
@ACuriousMind You make me miss germany </3
@BernardMeurer Lucky you ;)
02:05
i heard level b and pi kapp tonight as well
but idk if pi kapp is open
is level b the bar in ctown?
yeah
they have like something
i think lambda is open too
@BernardMeurer I thank my lucky stars every day to live here :P
might go to lambda if thumpty has no coke
@ACuriousMind It really is an amazing country, even tho I didn't like Berlin too much, when I was on the train to Denmark I really enjoyed some of the places I went by, like Rostock seems cool
02:07
Don't be so picky, thumptys has lots to offer
:/
:P
:)
coke is over 100 a gram in ithaca
at best they have mid weed and molly
@BernardMeurer Oh, Berlin is a whole different place from the rest of the country
Ithaca does have a drug problem
lol yeah, but it really doesent help the prices
dude molly is something I don't go anywhere near
02:08
It's nice for a trip, but I wouldn't want to live there
where im from, coke is 60 a gram
ive not done molly
dont do molly
why?
oh i heard like people va tech or something got poisoned af
i left an hour ago to you guys talking about admissions
wtf happened..
well it completely depletes your serotonin levels so if you do molly more than once it has really bad long-lasting effects
02:09
@Obliv I happened
and short-term it can cause actual depression
@ACuriousMind It just seemed too crowded for my taste
if you have goals and lack control dont do drugs
esp. addictive ones
but youve never tried so you dont know
i think tonight, i'll probably just do coke
well I don't want to try for that main reason haha
02:10
@Obliv Where do you go to?
actually, the most depressing is probably like oxycodone
@BernardMeurer It is. Although I don't like the rural parts, either. The mid-sized cities are just right for me
last thing a college student needs is a complete drop of serotonin
you do that like a week and you never forget
rutgers nb in nj
ironic since its known as a party school
02:11
@ACuriousMind I wanted to visit Bremen but I didn't have time
syracuse is a party school
lol
if you want to drive south a little from cornell
ok good night enjoy your coke & physics hw pallas. o/ all
night dude
02:12
nah, i finish physics
I'm going to head out to the library
just coke pregame then probably more coke at thumpty
there's work that needs to be done!
@BernardMeurer Never been to Bremen
02:13
bye
@FenderLesPaul Goodnight man!
Never been to that many cities, actually. I'm not the sightseeing type
sightseeing is not fun
when you can view whatever it is on google images without the heat, lack of toilets, and mosquitoes
Oh, it is when you're somewhere unfamiliar.
@ACuriousMind Also went to Bielefeld, nothing there tho
02:15
@BernardMeurer Of course not, the city's just a myth ;)
(I actually know someone studying there, we never get tired of that joke)
@ACuriousMind It's just a bahnhof
@BernardMeurer There's a running gag that says that Bielefeld doesn't actually exist. Nobody knows who started it, but everyone just runs with it
Actually that's a funny story, when I was at bielefeld I didn't know about the conspiracy, and I called a frind I was going to meet in Flensburg to tell him I was at Bielefeld already and he just kept makign fun of how I couldn't be there, it was all an illusion and so on
Got me really lost for a while that day
Specially because for a second I thought I had the wrong train since he said Bielefeld wasn't a city
and I had a minor freak out :p
02:18
Nice, I like that guy already
He's currently doing voluntary work in Kenya, he's a really nice guy
Nice! As an intermission, or is it related to what he actually wants to do?
He's going for international relations, so definitely the second one :)
I think he's still affiliated to the green party as well
Which is the root of 99% of our hard core discussions
What? Too establishment for you? ;P
@ACuriousMind If I tell you I'm afraid you'll rush into hating me :p
02:32
Oh, my political opinion has wavered all over the place over the course of the past five years, not gonna judge anyone. But if you don't want to talk about it, it's fine
I don't have any issues with it. I have a very hard stance on immigration (against) and about multiculturalism in general that the Green Party people don't enjoy :p
No, no I'm not from Dresden
It highly depends on how you're defining the pretty charged word "multiculturalism" there. And I'll preventively say this is not the place to get into that.
I'll just assume you're not an asshole and leave it at that ;)
@ACuriousMind I like to think I'm not :p
And you're right regarding this not being the place
The lack of Flens is crippling the discussion anyway
Well, I'm drinking the whisky I merely wanted to sample for a friend right now after I decided it's not good enough :P
And Flens is more a drink for commiseration than discussion, anyway ;)
Pff, Flens is my beer for every occasion
Amstel is my beer for commiseration
02:45
I...don't think I ever had Amstel
Means your life hasn't been miserable enough yet
Actually, Heineken is more commiseration even
@BernardMeurer Ahahahahahah
Perhaps
Heineken tastes like banana
Everyone I know agrees
I bloody hate Heineken
Because it claims to be so good and unique
and yet its just crap
It's like you take this beautiful, gorgeous girl out and then it's actually some undercover dude
Tsc, it's just frustrating
I'm passionate about my beer experiences
02:51
Well, that's good
My wallet disagrees heavily
Well, I'm spoiled because my money comes from a scholarship so I never really had to worry about it so far
German beer is imported here, so it's ultra mega super duper expensive
It's a tough life
And because I pretty much only spend my money on rent, food and the occasional computer game, I don't have any expensive hobbies
Do you play Civilization?
02:58
@BernardMeurer There's no Brazilian beer?
@BernardMeurer Sometimes. Civ4 + mods is still my favourite
@ACuriousMind There are and some are really good, but german beers just own it
What about chess?
I've played Civ 5 more, we should play someday
@BernardMeurer I have one friend I always play chess with and he always defeats me, apart from that, not really
Hello all
Yeah I'm in the same situation currently, I lose every damn time
@ACuriousMind When does Germany spring forward?
@ACuriousMind What?
03:00
@0celo7 This Sunday
@ACuriousMind I have to cut a string off of this jacket, please help
I can't do anything without you
@ArtOfCode America.
@ACuriousMind chess.com?
@BernardMeurer Never used it, and I actually don't enjoy chess that much. I just play it with that one friend because we've played it since kindergarten.
@ACuriousMind Dang it
I'll find something for us to play someday
Well, not since kindergarten, I guess
I know him since then, and we just started playing it one day
03:06
I have your mental skills on such high esteem I didn't even doubt it when you said you played chess in kindergarten
@ACuriousMind this string isn't gonna cut itself!
I need you to look up how to cut a string
@0celo7 You can't cut a string, they're fundamental objects.
Try scissors, heard they are great
@ACuriousMind Not that string, a Schnur
@BernardMeurer don't own any
@ACuriousMind how do I buy scissors
Use your teeth
to buy the scissors that is
03:09
@BernardMeurer I feel equally flattered and weirded out :P
tfw no teeth
if you bite a cashier they'll give you a scissor
@ACuriousMind That's what my last girlfriend used to say
I can't bite!

Meh, I don't feel flattered by that.
03:18
@ACuriousMind I'm assuming you don't want to Skype w/ me and the Brazilian
We have a crisis
I'm watching something, not devoting my auditory capacity to something else
6 mins ago, by ACuriousMind
Meh, I don't feel flattered by that.
Wasn't supposed to flatter anyone :P
@ACuriousMind You don't want to talk to us :(
03:47
@ACuriousMind Huh, Algebra prof put a note on the class website saying you're right.
"Thanks, Ryan, for asking about it!"
@ACuriousMind His example is...a lot more complicated than yours.
The ring of functions on the set of real sequences.
Some of my dreams are like Kekule's (the guy who discovered benzene structure)

Here's an example of a dream I have last night one year ago that actually helps me learn something new
Tl dr: In this dream, there is a equation, which caused me to ask the tutor and professor in my dream about it. They then give an explanation

I then ask their real life counterparts of the same question, and then I got a more detailed answer than in the dream's

06:03
@DanielSank We abuse probability a lot ;)
user54412
As to what you seem to be asking, probabilities are only ever defined as part of some possibility space (usually denoted $\Omega$ from what I've seen)
user54412
so the question "how likely is it that my data was drawn from this distribution?" can only be answered if we agree on what all other possibilities are
user54412
for example, something that looks like Poisson of mean 2 after a million samples probably wasn't drawn from Poisson with mean 2000, but could just as well have been drawn from Poisson mean 2.000000001
@ChrisWhite Why are you up so late
06:08
@ChrisWhite Also what does it mean for the lapse function to have no critical points
I know what that means
But what does it imply
user54412
@DanielSank in the space of all probability distributions, Poisson(exactly 2) has measure 0, so unless you either (a) expand your idea of "consistent with this analytical model" to account for fuzz or (b) put some pretty crazy priors on the distributions ("I know it's Poisson of an even integer"), you can't say much
And why would we demand it?
Is it so we can foliate spacetime
user54412
what's a critical point in this context?
@Sᴋᴜʟʟᴘᴇᴛʀᴏʟ Got home late, did some GR, watched some videos
user54412
1st derivative = 0?
06:09
@ChrisWhite If $N$ is the lapse, it's $\mathrm{d}N=0$
user54412
yeah it would probably break foliation
will you be doing any work related to LIGO in the future? @ChrisWhite
Just wondering...
user54412
always possible, though I've temporarily dodged it
user54412
and I would never actually want to work on the LIGO team
user54412
just possibly make independent models for them to compare to
@ChrisWhite y
user54412
@0celo7 too easy to get lost in the crowd, no recognition for individual achievements, almost certainly a lot of bureaucracy
you're a glory hound
user54412
so be it :)

I just stumbled across this ignorant rant and wondered "how could the person writing this have so much rep?" Then I checked and indeed they have written reasonable answers to other questions, some of which I've apparently upvoted. I don't know what to make of this.
08:04
I found it extremely annoying that this is in some sense, a projection of a (at least) 3 dimensional system onto just one dimension of nuclear motion
I wonder if there are ways simialr to 2D NMR in IR and UV-vis spectroscopy that can allow us to get 2D or 3D spectra so that will help us resolve things like these...
08:55
mornin
09:49
@vzn what are the assumptions of the bell inequality then and how does allow certain theories
10:41
RIP Johan Cruijff, once called the Pythagoras of football
11:05
Was he a crazy cult leader that took credit for the accomplishments of others
11:28
I think I've worked out why the Newtonian calculation of the event horizon radius gives the same answer as GR, and as expected it's all actually rather boring.
The weak field form of the metric is:
$ds^2 = -(1+2\phi)dt^2 + dx^2/(1+2\phi) + d\Omega^2$ where $\phi$ is the Newtonian gravitational potential.
But in the Schwarzschild metric the way the $r$ coordinate is chosen makes this equation exact, so it applies even when the curvature is high.
And that's why the Newtonian calculation works. It's an accident of how the radial coordinate has been chosen.
Oops, that should be $dr$ not $dx$ in the metric.
@JohnDuffield see above
11:47
@0celo7 There's now a UTK website saying "ACM was right."?
I like that.
30 things in the queue.
::sigh::
12:05
Give me more points and I'll close all those
I want the power
rubs hands
::slowly backs away from @Slereah ::
12:49
@DavidZ @dmckee @Qmechanic Can whoever of you declined my flag on this "answer" elaborate on how that answers the question "Do tachyons move faster than light?". It says "If tachyons move faster than light, then Einstein was wrong". It doesn't say at all whether or not they actually move faster than light.
Tachyons moving FTL does not actually invalidate Einstein, either
The NAA flag is meant for things that don't even attempt to answer the question, and are basically entirely unrelated to the question, or are not even attempts to answer anything.
That answer didn't meet that criterion, I thought. It's the sort of thing to downvote, not delete.
It was close though.
How does the downvoting work, anyway
How bad does an answer have to be before being deleted
Or is it not deleted if it's just terribly wrong
Never deleted if it's just wrong
you are playing right in the hands of the terrorists
12:55
Yeah, it's not really about being bad, either. Answers are deleted mostly for not being answers (or, really, not being anything close to an answer)
Which is good if the net reputation from that wrong answer is negative, since deleting it would just give the points back to the user, but the 5:1 upvote/downvote ratio sadly leads to it actually being possible to gain rep by just posting wrong stuff that looks good enough for someone who doesn't know better to upvote it.
Yeah really the ratio just doesn't work to penalize people
As can be seen in SOME CASES
219
Q: Should the weight of downvotes be increased?

Jeff AtwoodWhen we started Stack Overflow, we wanted to make sure that downvotes were more of a visual and psychological motivator than a punitive action. That's why upvotes are +10 downvotes are -2, and cost the casting voter -1 However, recently, I've seen Marc Gravell and Jon Skeet both say similar ...

Yeah I've seen it
"locked by Jeff Atwood"
heh
Funny, the top voted answer even back then said "Yes, increase the weight!" and they still didn't do it
12:58
yeah I dunno why
Or even just like
Make the ratio a parameter that can be fixed by the communities
Good morning
Hello
@Slereah Well-meaning, but oh god would that lead to continual meta debates in every single community
