Could please someone help me with this little problem?
I want to calculate the lenght of a photon of $780 \text{nm}$ if the observer is travelling $v = 0.99\text{c}$.
I am reading the Doopler Effect of wikipedia but there are a lot of different calculations and I am not sure which I have to use.

@heather Yeah... He's super legit...
(although it's still only on arXiv, so there could be errors and there may be little things here and there. I'm very, very interested in where this goes, but I'm not squealing in excitement yet)
Also, if it is right, it's not surprising - a lot of people have assumed this to be the case. Still an amazing achievement if true though

@EnderLook Do you mean wavelength by "length"? Also, do you mean the observer is travelling with that speed with respect to the photon source, and that the 780nm are the wavelength of the photons in the rest frame of the source?

Quoting from a professor of theoretical computer science: "Corollary 1 Let $P$ be the set of languages accepted in polynomial time by a deterministic Turing machine and let $NP$ be the set of languages accepted in polynomial time by a nondeterministic Turing machine. Then $P \neq NP$." Thanks to @heather for finding this :D

NP =P

I see what you did there

12:09 AM
=D

Lenght = wavelenght, sorry for my english.
The photon is travelling at light speed to the observer, and the observer is travelling to the 99% of light speed to the photon, so the speed is 199% light speed. The 780nm is the real wavelengh of the photon, I want to know how the observer would see it.

@EnderLook It sounds you need to review relativity. Photons travel with light speed in all frames. In what frame is the observer travelling with 0.99c?

@ACuriousMind making Mohnstrudel
@EnderLook the word is spelled length

@0celóñe7 Nice. Not in the opium variant though, I hope?

@EnderLook In particular you should probably review the relativistic velocity composition rule.
You are used to the Galilean rule $v' = u + v$, but in a Minkowski space the rule is

12:14 AM
@ACuriousMind nope, but I hear eating copious amounts of the stuff triggers drug tests
There's like a kilo of the stuff in there

$$ v' = \frac{u + v}{1 + \frac{uv}{c^2}} \;, $$ or in terms of beta (fraction of the speed of light) $$ \beta_v' = \frac{\beta_v + \beta_u}{1 + \beta_v \beta_u} \;.$$

Photon 780 nm

@EnderLook I'm afraid unless you specify with respect to what the observer is travelling with 0.99c, that still doesn't mean anything. That is, what is the object that is at rest in the frame where you say the observer has 0.99c?

@Mithrandir24601 I might actually not be there for this AMA. (Which is fine.) That's our chat session time slot, right?

12:18 AM
@DavidZ It's a few hours (4?) after the regular chat session time - it's 9pm in the UK

@DavidZ No, the chat session is 4pm UTC, it's four hours after that

@Mithrandir24601 oh right. I mixed up my time zones.

I'll be there at that time almost certainly though, so don't worry about moderation issues

Anyway - I'm off to bed - night all!

mmm, but... I think... that... I am missing something.
An inmobile person see the photon at 780 nm and also see a second person travelling at 99%C. I want to calculate how the second person would see the same photon, Is it possible?

12:22 AM
@EnderLook Ah, yes. Then your observer is moving at 0.99c with respect to the photon source, and you have to use the relativistic doppler effect.

@EnderLook All it took was you saying what you meant.

What??? There is a Doopler Effect and a Relativistic Doopler Effect??? Oh my god...

Yes, the two are different. The doppler effect is for sound and every other wave carried by a true medium, the relativistic doppler effect is for light

ok, I'll read it

@Mithrandir24601 good night =)
kind of a broad/dumb question:
how do you get from a physical gate, like a beamsplitter, to the matrix that represents the action it performs?
(in quantum computing)

12:36 AM
@heather The one rule to get matrices: The columns of the matrix are the images of the basis.
(Sounds much better when I imagine my old math teacher saying that to me in German, but it's true)

the basis vectors wrt to the old basis? that's how i learned it

So you pick a basis, look what your device does to them, and then write the results into a matrix, the n-th column being the result of applying the device to the n-th basis vector. Tah-dah, there's your matrix representing the device

::groans:: okay
so...in my example, i'd have to shoot a photon at a beamsplitter, measure its state before and after, and use that?

Well, ideally if you have a beam splitter, someone else should have done that for you

okay, true.
is there some index of what matrices correspond to what optical components?

12:41 AM
Remember that you can't really "measure a state" - you can only measure observables and if the state that came out was not an eigenstate of the observable you're measuring, you're not really gaining much information about the state that came out

right...

@heather I think that people doing that sort of experiments would know what the components do but I suspect that no one would write that up into a list because everyone "should already know" what the components do.

there's a few examples on wikipedia that cover all but one thing i'd like to know, so that's good
(i don't know what i'd do without wikipedia)
i think i'll ask about that on the main site.
thanks @ACuriousMind

Watching a dramatic biopic on Einstein

There's a movie about your cat?

@ACuriousMind no
There should be though

@heather its an impressive effort with high degree of sophistication however these types of efforts are not unheard of. see a page maintained by woeginger for a current list of attempts. win.tue.nl/~gwoegi/P-versus-NP.htm an example of similar work by Hauptmann from last year thats generated very little online reaction so far. wp.me/p2OLTI-1xN more on general topic vzn1.wordpress.com/category/p-vs-np

@JohnRennie I need a bit of help with this algorithm question in Java. According to me, the outer loop runs $n$ times, and for each of those $n$ times, the inner loops runs $(n-i-1)(n-1)$. So the number of array accesses should be $\sum (n-i-1)(n-1)=\frac{n(n-1)^2}{2}-n(n-1)$. Also, each time the array is accessed thrice. So the answer should be an order $3n^3$. But that is wrong. I am not being able to figure out why :/

Anonymous

Anonymous
Oh, I think they are taking the $\frac{1}{2}$ also into account

Anonymous
That's strange

Isn't it $\sqrt{n}\sum_i(n-i)$ loops?

Anonymous
@JohnRennie How are you getting the $\sqrt{n}$ ?

6:32 AM
Oops, ignore that. Ther'll be a log in there somewhere.

Anonymous
$log$ ? But how?

Hang on ... that innermost loop never terminates
(k=1; k < n; k = k^2)
Since $1^2 = 1$ for any $n > 1$ that innermost loop never temrinates.

Anonymous
@JohnRennie I think that is k*2 written

Doh!

The imgur ruined the pic quality

6:35 AM
Anyway

Anonymous
Yeah, I think that is one point

It's too early for me to be able to read :-)

Anonymous
We can get something like lg(n)....but I'm still thinking

Anonymous
@JohnRennie :P

Anonymous
Don't you wake up at 4 or something ? XD

6:36 AM
OK, we get a log because in the innermost loop $k$ grows exponentially i.e. every time through the loop it doubles.
So doubling $n$ only increases the number of times the innermost loop runs by one.
I'll have to leave that with you for the moment. I'm in the middle of checking my servers.

Anonymous
Umm, I think I'm getting it.....k=1 ---> 2 -----> 2^2 ------> 2^3 ---------->till we reach near to n

Anonymous
@JohnRennie Oh, no prob!

Anonymous
$lg(n)$ denotes the power of $2$ reached before the innermost loop terminated

Anonymous
woohoo :D I get it!

Hi @ATaco. Nice name :D

Thanks, I'm not much of a physics nut, I was just popping my head in.

@ATaco Most people here are also not physics nuts except JR perhaps :P Most are mathematicians. And a few people like me who are neither visit this room everyday. :)

You're in Kerala or at home?

user228700
@Blue It's going OK, thanks :-) And you?

user228700
7:25 AM
@Blue Nah, holed up in my room, as always :-P

user228700
Did you go back home?

Anonymous
@Kaumudi.H Nope. I'm in Kolkata only....I don't want to waste one free day travelling :P

user228700
Haha, OK :-) What are you up to?

Nothing much. Just doing solving algo problems :P (And homework stuff)

user228700
Cool :-) I've got records to complete :-( And again, I haven't eaten anything substantial in over 24 hours.

@JohnR: That USB adapter is arriving today, I'm told!

Fortunately we have a few canteens inside campus. They have good food.

@Kaumudi.H cool :-) Though do you have the time to watch films these days?

user228700
You're luckier than I am :-(

How are the legs BTW

user228700
@JohnRennie Lol, certainly not, but I can use them to watch lectures etc.

user228700

@JohnRennie OK, actually! :-o

Random metric of the day
$$ds^2 = \left(\int_{x^2+y^2=1}\sin (x) +\frac{\cos}{y} dxdy\right) dt^2 + dx^2 + dy^2 + dz^2 + t^2 dxdz$$

user228700
@JohnRennie Actually, no, not in Kochi.

(Have a taste of some nonlocal madness)

user228700
In Chennai, YEP!

There's probably a running club ...

user228700
BTW, I have dropped out of college to take the position of Permanent Sweeper Of Room.

7:35 AM
You sweep your room? I thought you were a student! :-)

user228700
@JohnRennie :-( I do, yes, and my roommate hasn't even offered to do it once!

Presumably there is less dust in Kochi than in Chennai?

user228700
@JohnRennie Probably, yes, but like I said, I'm not much of a runner.

user228700
@JohnRennie Even more, somehow! And ALL OF THE HAIR!

Hair?

user228700
7:36 AM
@Blue :-P It was alright. Exhausting, as expected.

@Kaumudi.H Just stop doing it.....or ask them directly!

user228700
@JohnRennie We are two girls sharing a very small room.

@Kaumudi.H Sweep the dust over to her side of the room

Anonymous
lol

user228700
@JohnRennie x'D Great idea!

user228700
7:37 AM
However, I doubt if she'd notice; even if I did ask her, she'd probably be rubbish at sweeping.

user228700
In the two weeks that we've been sharing this room, she hasn't made her bed even once! Her side of the room always looks like it has just been through a tornado or something.

Have you asked what students do for accommodation in their second year and after?

user228700
@JohnRennie There is no need to ask: they do the same thing. Sometime, a bunch of students rent an apartment but hopes of that happening have dwindled.

@Kaumudi.H she's probably complaining to her friends about how tidy you are :-)
OMG it's like sharing a room with my mother!!

user228700
7:39 AM
Hehehe :-) True.

user228700
Gah, and as I type, I am also currently doing my laundry :-(

Anonymous
Actually if your roommate is like me, then she wouldn't bother even if you gather a mountain of dust on her side of them room. I just never notice dust until someone points it out to me. You should see my room once :'D. (So perhaps you should talk to her directly and I'm almost sure that she won't refuse)

@Kaumudi.H stay at the YWCA? There must be other places to stay in Kochi?

user228700
There are, but none of them are as near to the college as this one.

But then you'll soon have your pushbike ...

user228700
7:41 AM
I am also delighted to inform you that I haven't eaten in over 24 hours.

LOW BLOOD SUGAR!

user228700
@JohnRennie Well, yes, but, hmm...

Order something :/

Honestly, low blood sugar does no-one any favours.

user228700
There is time to think about it...

user228700
7:42 AM
@Blue From where?! There are no good restaurants nearby.

Buy some biscuits

Anonymous
@Kaumudi.H There are websites like Zomato and all. Also dominoes, pizza hut etc...For cheap food there must be some home delivery service around

user228700
I do have a bunch of digestive biscuits here somewhere...

Anonymous
That sounds bad :(

Actually that gives me an idea. How about a operator valued metric:

$$\int (-) ds^2 = \int (-) g^{\mu\nu}dx_{\mu}dx_{\nu}$$

7:44 AM
Digestive biscuits have a short half life in my house. Actually that's true of anything edible.

@JohnRennie lol. Or maybe an important skill when you are pissed off at someone and have an axe nearby.

We literally learn how to saw wood and join them in different ways

@Blue I did that in my younger (teenage) days, just for fun. It can be surprisingly satisfying to do.

user228700
@JohnR: And it works!

Yup!

Pro-tip: when you're watching music videos using your headphones be sure to sing along if your roommate is in the room. Loudly :-)

7:58 AM
@Kaumudi.H My situation is similar to yours. My classmates are mostly boring. Several of them already got involved into college politics. Meh.

@Kaumudi.H Practice for when she returns. Be sure to sing a semitone flat as that improves the experience.

user228700
My classmates are relatively nice and all but like I said, they aren't particularly kind, if you know what I mean. Oh, well.

user228700
@JohnRennie Hehehe :-) This weekend, she spent two days listening to the same song on repeat!!

user228700
I could hear it through her headphones and I was baffled as to how she could it. It's not even a good song!

@Blue Independence is not enough. Revolution is required.

user228700
Oh, hi, there @Balarka :-)

8:02 AM
Hi @Kaumudi, @Blue

@BalarkaSen I always thought you were revolting ...

user228700
Always.

@Kaumudi.H It was a petition to a newspaper company which published few over-exaggerated articles about an ongoing issue in the college (basically the state government wants to look after after the placements but the student union doesn't want so). The newspaper stated that "ongoing protests, studies on hold". They were making a petition against the "studies on hold" part. I felt it was silly to bother about such silly issues and didn't sign it.

8:02 AM
@Avantgarde Yeah I wondered if I should look at the full album.
I'll check it out.

@Blue there is an argument for going with the flow in these situations.

@Kaumudi.H I grew my hair long in my first year as a student, and it was an amazing amount of work to keep in order. I've had short hair ever since.

tb entirely h, you should not be neutral about these issues, but point out that J's protest strategy is nonsensical. try and instigate them to a larger and greater form of revolution

user228700
@JohnRennie Ah, hey, so those pictures on your Fb page, are they from that time?

@BalarkaSen You could call the outside of a closet it's inside

@PrathyushPoduval Well, actually, it's unclear if you can. Outside and inside of a closet might not be well-defined.

8:17 AM
Its all relative :P

@Kaumudi.H the ones from my motorbike holiday? If so, those were the post long hair era.

user228700
@JohnRennie No, there's another one of you leaning against a wall or something, IIRC...

user228700
Hmm, so exactly what do u mean by long?

user228700
That's it, I've decided that I'm going to cut my hair way short when I go back home next month.

@BalarkaSen I remebered this joke:
An engineer, a physicist and a mathematicians have to build a fence around a flock of sheep, using as little material as possible.

The engineer forms the flock into a circular shape and constructs a fence around it.

The physicist builds a fence with an infinite diameter and pulls it together until it fits around the flock.

The mathematicians thinks for a while, then builds a fence around himself and defines himself as being outside.

8:20 AM
Yeah but what the mathematician is doing is nontrivial
He's invoking the Jordan curve theorem

@Kaumudi.H I can't find that. What's the link?

user228700
Hang on.

@EmilioPisanty Congrats!

@Kaumudi.H My hair got to about as long as yours is in your current profile pic.

@JohnRennie nah... half a semitone flat is the way to go ;P

user228700
8:23 AM
@JohnRennie Wow!

@BalarkaSen did you have any cumpolsary school program today?

@Mithrandir24601 for the best experience make the number of semitones flat an arbitrary function of time :-)
@Kaumudi.H that wasn't unusual in the late seventies.

user228700
Taking too long to load...

user228700
You were wearing a blue shirt(?)

@JohnRennie ohhh yes. Fantastic :D

8:25 AM
@Kaumudi.H a blue shirt leaning on a wall?
In one of my Facebook photo albums?

user228700
@JohnRennie Yeah? :-/ Hmm...

user228700
@BalarkaSen :-)

@Kaumudi.H I'm not sure what's so amazing about that. My hair is about as long, if not a bit longer, and I know several other guys with hair that long :P

user228700
Wow, and now I'm imagining you completely differently :-P

@PrathyushPoduval Nope

8:35 AM
@Kaumudi.H I used to be part of a board gaming group, and there are a couple of pictures from that time ...

@Kaumudi.H I was looking for the motorbike pics but couldn't find them ...
There're on the chat somewhere.

Yeah very nicely

Back in the day I had a number of tie-dyed shirts though fortunately no photographs of it have survived.

user228700
@JohnRennie Yeah, that's not long at all, sorry :-P My bad.

Gosh, I wore big glasses in those days ...

The glasses are a definite sign of the times, I'd say
