6:01 PM
Rob is in love with the meta chat

rob

I'm thinking new mods have to introduce a policy and that was his

rob
@0celo7 I'm easily distracted.

@2017 I thought you were deleting your account?

@0celo7 You thought it right.

6:07 PM
I have officially lost my faith in humanity
I
I can't even

> A Patriarchy of Nidokings
PURPLE MALES AHHHH
@2017 but you canceled it or what?

@0celo7 No.
I might

@EmilioPisanty I don't find that particularly strange. Are you new to the internet (or humans in general)? ;P

@ACuriousMind sigh
on the other hand, there's this

chat's got stuff against jee

6:35 PM
@BalarkaSen what's the best IIT?

yo @BernardoMeurer you know anything about qsub?

@Bernardo hell if I know
@0celo7 it's a cult man

@EmilioPisanty I don't even know what it is, sorry man :/
What is it?

@BernardoMeurer mainframe job queueing program

6:37 PM
somehow if I gut my for loops so they take no time at all, it parallelizes fine
but if I put it all back in, it sends it to a single core
as far as I can tell
@BernardoMeurer har har

I know none of this, if I want parallel code I use C++ and OpenMP

the only form of documentation that's less helpful than manpages is a beautifully typeset LaTeX package docs

I'm too stupid to code pthreads
Hm? I find manpages pretty helpful :(

@BernardoMeurer yah, well, this was not my choice

They're just cryptic
@EmilioPisanty Whatcha trying to do exactly?

6:39 PM
@BernardoMeurer cryptic == unhelpful
cryptic == not communicating correctly

Fair, it's bad comms

@BernardoMeurer submit a job via a bash script in a way that it will send each part of a bash for loop to a different core

Jesus
Hm
So, if the for loops have low complexity, it works
they all run on their own threads
but if they don't they get bundled in one thread?

@BernardoMeurer no, not quite
this is a bash script that handles a c++ .o file
all I'm changing is the executable
i.e. for-loops internal to the c++ file

@ACuriousMind what does \le mean in the context of groups

6:43 PM
but it somehow changes how it interacts with the queue manager

Ah
Hmmm
What's the metal this is running on? Is this x86_64?

@0celo7 Some use it for "is a subgroup of" (and a triangle instead of the < for "is a normal subgroup of")

What the hell
I got suspended just now

@BernardoMeurer I think so?
how do I check?

@EmilioPisanty Is this a UNIX-like OS?

6:45 PM
@BernardoMeurer yes

uname -a

linux of some flavour
Linux hostname 2.6.32-431.20.3.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Jun 19 21:14:45 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
does appear to be x86_64

cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "model name"

indeed it seems to be loudly insisting on it

@BalarkaSen Hi! Could you solve the complex number problem ? :-)

6:46 PM
See what that gives you

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz

eight times

All seems fine
8 cores :)
@ACuriousMind Why did I get suspended for like a moment?

@BernardoMeurer I am investigating.

6:48 PM
And my message complaining about proprietary software got removed lol

@BernardoMeurer 8*8 on the actual machine it's sending it to

This qsub is some obscure thing

@BernardoMeurer apparently it's quite popular for HPC management

I can't find who implements this
if it's GNU or some kernel-level shit

I'm pretty sure it's this one
Oracle Grid Engine, previously known as Sun Grid Engine (SGE), CODINE (Computing in Distributed Networked Environments) or GRD (Global Resource Director), was a grid computing computer cluster software system (otherwise known as a batch-queuing system), acquired as part of a purchase of Terraspring, then improved and supported by Sun Microsystems and later Oracle. There have been open source versions and multiple commercial versions of this technology, initially from Sun, later from Oracle and then from Univa Corporation. This technology forked from the same codebase as HP's UDC, and IBM's eLiza...

6:50 PM
It's Free Software, sweet!

@2017 Ahh, no. I thought a little but couldn't pan it out. I'll try it after the exams.

@BalarkaSen Sure. Tell me if you need some hints ;)

I'm trying to think why would it be bundling together the instances

Will do.

Maybe if hyperthreading is on

6:51 PM
Try to approach it geometrically. Good luck for your exams though! @BalarkaSen

@BernardoMeurer Is there such a thing as Free Software under the care of Oracle?

Hwy everyone, I have a quick question. Often times I see that multiplication in time domain is convolution in frequency domain and vice versa. However, sometimes I see a factor of (1/2pi) tagged on.
When does this happen?
Is it all the time?

@EmilioPisanty Only if it's old enough it had SISSL as it's license of choice

Or is it only when going from time to frequency, but not when going from frequency to time?

6:53 PM
@Christian when normalization demands it
there's no convention that leaves everybody happy
you just need to check how everything is normalized
i.e. definitions for forward and backwards FT, and convolution

@EmilioPisanty I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I cannot help. My only guess would be Hyperthreading is doing something weird, but that's very unlikely. I wish I knew more about mainframes :/

hmm, that confuses me more. :/

and then an appropriate set of $2\pi$s will shake out onto the connections
@Christian see, here's the thing
is the FT $F(\omega) = \int f(t) e^{i\omega t}\mathrm dt$?
or is it $F(\omega) = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2\pi}}\int f(t) e^{i\omega t}\mathrm dt$?
@BernardoMeurer OK, so this is bizarre
it actually starts off on one core until that one is finished
and then it goes off to full-core mode

@ACuriousMind I was suspended as well

so I guess the lighter executable wasn't changing the behaviour, it just means I breezing through the initial slow stage
@Christian if it's the latter, then the FT is self-inverse with that same normalization, i.e. $f(t) = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2\pi}}\int F(\omega) e^{-i\omega t}\mathrm d\omega$, with only a change in the sign of the exponent
if it's the former, the inverse FT sucks up the full normalization, $f(t) = \frac{1}{{2\pi}}\int F(\omega) e^{-i\omega t}\mathrm d\omega$
However, for a reasonable interpretation of the convolution, the second normalization is probably going to leave a constant in the convolution=FT(product of FTs) identity
so you'll always have awkward constants somewhere
and you just choose the convention that puts the awkward constants where you'll use them the least
so different people use different conventions

7:02 PM
@ACuriousMind Does "JEE is devil worshiping" violate the Be Nice Policy?

@2017 Thanks
@0celo7 Devil worshiping is totally nice man

that's what I thought
I'm a Satanist
I don't see what's wrong with it

me too!

@0celo7 It is a weird thing to say but it's so oddly over the top I don't consider it actually offensive :P (which is why you are not finding yourself currently suspended; I said I'm investigating and can't say anything more)

I'm not currently suspended, am I?
How could I be talking :P

7:05 PM
> which is why you are not finding yourself currently suspended

Did you edit that

You sly fox you

@EmilioPisanty Unless you set $2\pi = 1$ :P

@ACuriousMind that's preposterous
everybody knows that $2\pi=10$

7:07 PM
$2\pi = \tau$

@EmilioPisanty Fair enough
Is 10 less awkward than $2\pi$?
How does one judge the awkwardness of a constant?

@BalarkaSen tau is such a terrible symbol for that

It should be $2\tau = \pi$
The $\pi$ looks like a tau with two legs if you squint :P

lol

7:09 PM
three-legged pi is the best

can i make a centipede pi
and actively use it as a notation

@BalarkaSen ooooh, yes, please do

or $\tau\!\tau\!\tau$

@0celo7 getcher spacings right
go big or go home

$\tau\quad\tau\quad\tau$?

7:10 PM
> According to Palais' own website, it seems that the macro \def \newpi{{\pi\mskip -7.8 mu \pi}} was used.

The Palais?

dunno if it will work here
$\def \newpi{{\pi\mskip -7.8 mu \pi}}$ $\newpi$
dammit
I'll kill the latex defs

dick palais, @0celo7

I dunno. If $2\pi$ confuses you that much maybe you're not cut out for STEM.

good topologist

7:12 PM
It's one of those intellectual bars that you have to overcome.

what did @0celo7 say that's over the top? I can't find it

I said that JEE is Devil worshiping.
The sentence doesn't even make sense. JEE is a test, Devil worshiping is a righteous action.

Yeah, probably too harsh

I wouldn't go that far

well, as long as JEE stays in its own room, that's cool

7:14 PM
JEE is not, which is the issue
the JEE is leaking out here
it's strictly off topic

What do you have against it man

JEEhad

OH MY GOD

I am gonna use and abuse that

@BalarkaSen nothing, but I came here to socialize, not be asked about test questions

7:16 PM
You can, like, hide posts of people
just sayin'

...wait, when did they change "ignore this user (everywhere)" to "hide posts"?

They didn't but you have both options available

Hmmm, I never saw the "hide posts" option before
But you're right, ignore is still there

@ACuriousMind As it stands I can't take that unitary reps/ergodic theory class

hide posts is for when the posts are annoying
ignore is for when the user is annoying

7:19 PM
I have to take a stupid numerical methods class and I'm trying to get out of now

having to click 20 times to hide a bunch of posts is pretty annoying

Graduation requirements are the worst

which is why the discussion should stay in its own room

@0celo7 :|

's fair
i never hide people a lot personally because i'm lazy

7:19 PM
@ACuriousMind At worst I just sit in the class. But if I'm not taking it, the prof has no reason to move the time

@2017 Stop flagging things that are not offensive.

What the hell did I do now?
I'm not flagging anything

Sorry, wasn't meant to ping you.

How do you hide individual posts?

sticky tape
on the monitor

7:21 PM
what's with the flagging?

@BalarkaSen Unless no one posts anything more in the room, seems like a very temporary solution :P

@ACuriousMind Thank you.
It seems some malicious person is hell-bent on flagging everything I say.

Don't see anything flag-worthy IMO

And yet people validate the flags.
SE's chat flag system is stupidly broken.

nah, the issue is more that the community is not very united around these parts
but such is life

7:26 PM
It's 10k'ers from other sites that validate flags

@ACuriousMind Never did.
I only flagged things that are offensive.

There aren't any 10k'ers here who love JEE
Oh please

@2017 "JEEhad"? Seriously? That's a silly joke.

What's JEE?

7:27 PM
Some standardized test in India.

@ACuriousMind "Jihad" isn't a very nice thing to joke about imo.

@ACuriousMind Lol, was Ben flagged too?
@BenNiehoff You alive?

Jihad is a word that has many meanings, it need not be related to terrorist agenda.
@2017 In my humble opinion you shouldn't take everything against JEE too personally. I think most of the people here respects what you're interested in. The ones who doesn't care, well, laugh them off

user image
2

I personally think JEE stuff are nice
just too hard for me

7:29 PM
@0celo7 ...why is your class being taught by a Sith Lord?

I'm here

I'm not following any of this, so I'll catch you guys on the flip side...

I'm not aware of having been flagged

@ACuriousMind did Ben get flagged? Can you tell us?
@ACuriousMind he's a random dude, not the prof

@0celo7 I would tell everyone to let it go :)

rob
7:30 PM
@0celo7 Tom Handler has ... changed ... since I was at UT.

I would take a picture of the prof but he said taking pictures in class is grounds for failing the course
@rob handler is much fatter

@0celo7 the irony

wow, when I was in undergrad, cameras were not so ubiquitous

@BalarkaSen what's ironic about the picture?

it never occurred to me that I might have to think about that, in the event that I'm lucky enough to become a prof someday

7:31 PM
@BenNiehoff Did you have paper or did you still use wax tablets? ;)

@0celo7 that the hooded person really does look like a terrorist

He has a cape on
Don't know if that's apparent from the picture
And a bundle of wooden swords

@ACuriousMind I don't remember, I never took notes ;)

Ah, gotcha

Btw it's super hot out

7:33 PM
I think for most of undergrad I didn't own a laptop

Don't know how he survives

@0celo7 Then the question becomes: Why is your class not being taught by a Sith Lord :P

and then maybe my last semester I got one of the early-generation machines that ran Windows XP Tablet Edition

Because siths don't understand physics
Especially thermo
Vader got that lesson the hard way

this was back before the iPad took over the word "tablet" and redefined it to be something useless

7:34 PM
Btw, no one noticed my tabs?
@BenNiehoff oh please

I love poking fun at Apple people ;)
your tabs look atrocious

I have everything in those tabs

part of the reason I use Firefox is that it never shrinks the tabs like that, even if I have 200 open (which I do)

Oh?

nope

7:35 PM
Yeah so annoying, that

What does that look like

it scrolls

That seems worse

well, it shows about ten tabs across my screen, and they scroll

I just open a new tab when I can't find the one I want

7:36 PM
but, you can also pull up a vertical list of them, with more complete titles, and scroll through that

Works fine

@0celo I can see that

but as far as poking fun at Apple, I found it hilarious when the iPad Pro was introduced as something revolutionary, when the technology (writing with digital ink on a screen) was literally 10 years old by that point

Why do you people have so many open tabs to begin with? I rarely get over a dozen

Because you're an AI

7:38 PM
@ACuriousMind I don't use bookmarks

> checks tab count

@BenNiehoff ...what.

and I keep opening papers that I mean to read, and never get around to

> 212 exactly
well then
@BenNiehoff same, generally the popups for typing the first bit of the website work for me

If I bookmark something I'll never remember to look at it again

7:39 PM
@0celo7 yes, exactly!

If the tab is open then I'll eventually see it again

same as if I clean off my desk...can't find anything again

@BenNiehoff Those litter my download folder instead

My coworker cleaned my desk over the break
I don't know where anything is now
@ACuriousMind ordner?

i'm gonna play the paperio game again

7:40 PM
Do you mean folder :P

ah, I do occasionally clean up my Downloads folder

@0celo7 lol, sounded English enough that I didn't remember to translate it :D

because my HD is only 256GB

I have a TB
And 16GB memory

well, SSD I should say
alas, my laptop is permanently sealed with glue and the parts are soldered in and un-upgradeable
but it's a pretty sweet machine aside from that
so 256 GB SDD and 8 GB RAM

7:42 PM
@BenNiehoff mac?

but I have an external 2 TB drive which I keep in my laptop bag, so it's not really a problem
no, it's a Surface Pro 4

Wow how many movies do you have to need that much storage?

I don't see the point of saving porn to disk
it's so easy to find
but, I do have a handful of Steam games which can be surprisingly big, I guess
and I do photography as a hobby, you'd be surprised how fast RAW files will fill your hard drive

Freaking GTA5 is taking 70 of my gigabytes
I don't even play it

I can't even install all of my games at once
currently only Skyrim is installed
but I haven't played it in a while

7:47 PM
Thermo prof: your choices are open or closed
Clearly not a topology student!
@BenNiehoff oh please
That's not a big feat
Just get a humble bundle and you need 256 GB for it

I wasn't saying it was a big feat!
I'm saying I have so many photos in my photography folder that I don't have a lot of room left

Right...photos.
I go back to my earlier comment.

@ACuriousMind that's pretty dull compared to the teaching spiderman
