Q: Pointing out that the problem is evident in the defensiveness

apaulSeems like it would be kind of self evident, but it's something that I encounter fairly often when talking to some folks about issues of discrimination and bias that drives me crazy... When someone from a minority group says "that's racist/sexist/homophobic/etc" and the retort from someone from...

Q: How to deal with neighbor who won't lock door to apartment building?

Daniel R. CollinsI've lived in a city apartment rental (Brooklyn, NY) for about 15 years. I've had a downstairs neighbor for about 5 years who causes quite a bit of trouble. Within the last year, she has simply stopped ever locking the front door of the apartment building that we share. This is a standard key-op...

@ExtrovertedMainMan Huh, I thought he made a meta about leaving....
@Ash He did, but then there was a glimmer of hope that things were changing on the network.
user15026
Okay, sure.
What, you didn't?
@apaul You do realize that you do in your question exactly what you're asking about, right?
@Catija How's that?
02:01
You, yourself, accuse yourself (in your per-emptory note) of being anti straight white men and then respond saying "I'm not, it's just X". How is that different?
> And before someone starts in with the whole "you're being biased too!!!!1!!1 Why can't straight white men talk about these things? Do you hate straight white men?" I don't hate straight white men. I just hate it when people deny my experiences and/or try to defend some pretty crappy behavior...
Hmm... Seems kinda thin.
Was more meant to be a statement about behavior rather than the often assumed perpetrator.
That's because you don't see yourself as a "perpetrator".
I don't hate straight white men. I just hate it when people deny my experiences and/or try to defend some pretty crappy behavior...
Well, I'm sure that most people wouldn't say "I hate all women"... they hate specific actions by those women.
@Catija Actually I do, I'm painfully aware. I fall short an awful lot of the time.
@Catija The thing is, in this context, all kinds of people have come at me. It's often straight white men, but they're certainly not the only homophobes in the world... I made the statement in order to get out in front of the usual backlash.
02:07
That really just looks like you're asking for more arguments... and it fails to assume good faith.
Let flagging take care of the arguments. Arguing the premise of the question isn't welcome here. You have no need to "fight" it in your question.
Oh really? I hadn't noticed. Feel free to edit it out if it bothers you that much.
...
Feel free to set a timer after you do, I'm sure someone will prove the point soon enough.
user15026
@apaul To me, it feels a lot like it's there to incite backlash, which I am trying to kinda take on faith that you aren't doing
user15026
but a lot of this conversation makes it sound like you're setting up another one of your "lightning rods" to prove a point and I really don't know how constructive that is
user15026
02:11
Or how fair it is to continually make these "lightning rods".
Honestly this one isn't. It's something that I struggle with, and it kinda looked like I wasn't the only one.
user15026
Well, this conversations, and your wording in your post, kinda makes it feel VERY antagonistic, and if that's not your intention, you may want to look at the post, and how you reacted here.
@apaul You do understand that calling it out doesn't stop people from saying it, right? I'd really like you to show some good faith and edit your post to make it less defensive.
@apaul If I understand it correctly, your question can be abstracted to "I'm talking with someone about discrimination experienced by Group X. This person's not in Group X and thinks that the discrimination isn't occurring. How can I point out that this lack of self-awareness is part of the problem?"
. . . with suitable substitutions for Group X.
Is that, more or less, what you're going for? And if so, I would recommend peeling it down and just going with essentially that. It streamlines the question and takes away a lot of bits that are going to stick out and cause problems.
user15026
Well, I tried to answer, although it doesn't give you an OMG silver bullet
user15026
02:20
but it does reference starfish and teaspoons!
user15026
(It might also be a rambling mess, I'm spoon low and kinda brain mushy)
user15026
I suspect it might not be what you wanted but it's what I've got.
Brb
02:39
@HDE226868 Sorry, had to drive. Eh It's a bit more than lack of self awareness.
@Catija Had it occurs to you that there's some reasons that a person like me might be a little "defensive" when asking questions on SE at the moment? Really not trying to be harsh about it, but try giving a little breathing room.
user15026
Honestly, as someone who experiences a lot of what you do I kinda think your constant antagonistic feeling attitude and your constant assumptions that none of us understand is....really unfair, to say the least
3
and yet the title of your question... "the problem is evident in the defensiveness"
@apaul That doesn't even make sense as an argument. Are you saying that I should be defensive about posting stuff, too? Or Ash should? Why do you feel that you need breathing room when other people who are in similar groups are doing just fine? You feeling defensive doesn't need to be apparent in your posts.
user15026
I know it's hard to be kind when you face shit every damn day but if you go in angry and antagonistic, you're going to get that back
user15026
it SUCKS but it's true and I hate the world for it
user15026
02:52
I hate that I have to put on my kindness hat all the damn time
user15026
sometimes that thing chafes like...well, I'm a fat human, it's short season, draw your own metaphor
@Ash I guess that's kinda where I've been for a while now. I'm not great a playing nice. I'm asking the question because I'm trying to get better at it. Emptying the sea with a teaspoon sucks, and admittedly I get pissed off about having to do it that way.
user15026
@apaul oh, I never said you gotta be happy about the teaspoon
user15026
some days I dream of buckets
user15026
the hardest part about all of this is learning that a lot of it is being able to like...sit and be patient with my feelings about my teaspoon
02:58
But, I tried to tone it down. (And trying harder not to feel like having to do that is a symptom of the problem) I'm trying.
user15026
@apaul That's the hard part, going "well I gotta teaspoon but if people weren't like this I could have a bucket but now i have to be nice with my spoon when I wanna just drop the bucket on their heads"
I'd kinda prefer to open a wormhole at the bottom of the marian trench. But, ya that ends badly... what-if.xkcd.com/54
user15026
I tend to assume anything that actually hits What If ends badly for something :P

@Ash Can you please make a synonym of ?
To me it sounds like one of them can be removed. maybe take it to meta?
@Cashbee It's just incessant because you get a big red error message if you forget to type the 's', because the system prevents non-mods from creating tags with very similar names.
@gparyani oh, so does not exist?
@Cashbee No.
So you suggest we make singular-plural duplicates for each tag?
I don't think that is necessary. But take it to meta if you think it is a good idea. Meta is the place for such suggestions ;) because if Tinker does now what you suggest, she will be responible for it. but if there was a meta about it that results in a yes, do it, all is fine.
07:45
@Cashbee Stack Overflow has them for quite a lot of tags.
@Cashbee I don't want to post a whole bunch of synonym requests at once.
@gparyani great, then you can add that to your meta question to maybe get more agreement :)
ask it generally, not only for the specific . like I did it before, say something like singular-plural duplicates.
and maybe link to some of the SO tags that you claim (no accusation, I'm just unknowing) there are plural-duplicates of
@apaul I'm generally apprehensive about participating right now. That is not because I'm autistic and also not because I'm asexual and also not because I have social anxiety. It's because I fail to properly deal with these issues myself in the context of SE right now. I resent the implication that it could be because this is just out of my control completly. The way I've always seen it is that it's not my place to put my personal issues on anyone else.
@gparyani Please do like Cashbee asked, and take it to meta. I'm not around for long enough to know how to handle the whole tag thing anyways ;)
If it's on meta, I'll have a reminder and the other mods a notification that this may be something we should do ;)
tags are weird
@Tinkeringbell Is it your first time being a mod?
If I may ask?
07:57
tag synonyms are weirder
@gparyani Yep
@user5389107 Hello stranger! Are you still doing well?
tag merges are basically hallucinogens
@user5389107 I am all three of those things. (See what I'm talking about?)
@Tinkeringbell not particularly, but thanks for asking
@user5389107 Damn. Hope things pick up soon then :)
08:01
@gparyani welcome to the uneviable club
@gparyani I think your FYI at the start of your question is a bit offensive (if only a bit). You indirectly say that most of us are not reasonable. Would you edit that out?
interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/14214/1599 ... could use some eyes. Also, there's more answers like that, too many IMO? Should I take it to meta? The asker is asking about a skill (enforcing a rule) and is basically getting all kinds of life-hacks, but not actually skills?
life hacks are NaAs
Tell that to the flag queue
I think the problems start with Kate's answer: It is okay, it gives some guidance on the 'enforce' part, asides from the slippers.
But I think many people just see the slippers and go 'Yay, fun!'
@Tinkeringbell oh don't i wish
08:12
hey @FlagQueue, life hacks are NaAs
@Cashbee I hope it got the message :P
Quick question: Is it okay to go rant to the neighbors about burning stuff? It stinks and almost ruined our laundry...

Yeah... I sympathise, I've got some of them next door

sounds like a rant is appropriate
😉 I'll let you know whether I survived later.
I'm already selfconsious when i smoke on my balcony xD
I could of course also act like my nose is bleeding and call 112 and send firefighters their way?
There's enough smoke to pull it off, I think
that is one expensive lesson
or are false fire alarms free in holland?
The worst you'll get in most of Europe is a moderate fine. You're not going to have to pay the full callout cost.
08:24
I can't find anything about calling when there's smoke :P
ooh, a question I was always wondering. do you prefer the netherlands or holland? is holland insensitive in any way? Someone once told me I should use the netherlands, but I forgot why
There's some stuff on 'broekzakgesprekken'...
I usually just use ISO country codes, e.g. "NL"
Netherlands 😉 Holland is a province :P
@Tinkeringbell when there's smoke, there's fire...
08:24
@Tinkeringbell ah. ok :) thx
@AJ That's an off-topic 'What to do'... It's way too broad

@gparyani I think your FYI at the start of your question is a bit offensive (if only a bit). You indirectly say that most of us are not reasonable. Would you edit that out?
@gparyani ^
@Cashbee I opted to leave it in because the question may come across as weird to those who don't know that my way of thinking is...different. I'm on the autism spectrum BTW
@Tinkeringbell I had to call out the fire brigade when there was (just) smoke once - it would have been quite very serious if they didn't come - someone in the flat below mine stupidly decided to leave a towel on a hob, which they left on. As a result, I don't particularly want to see smoke of any sort in my life again :P

@Tinkeringbell hence the comment
Will i run out of flags ? Or are they replenished every once in a while ?
@theenigma017 Yeah. You get 10, and after that you can buy another 100 for $5.99 :P
On a more serious note, you start with 10 each day, and for each 10 helpful flags you get another free one, up to a maximum of 100 a day :)
wha ..?
@theenigma017 Once a day. You can earn more flags per day by having your flags marked "helpful".
@Tinkeringbell I would have taken that literally, and it would have offended me
@gparyani Yeah, it needed a smiley :P
@Tinkeringbell What's "colon P"? :)
@gparyani How would that be offensive? :/
(My response from...seven years ago)
@Tinkeringbell Because you told me a lie
@gparyani I think the question is very good and does not appear weird to me at all.
08:37

@gparyani Ehh.. That takes some thinking, but may make sense. Does the smiley help in conveying that it's just a joke?
@Cashbee TBH I don't exactly see how it's offensive.
@Tinkeringbell It does today, but six years ago it wouldn't have
@user5389107 It needs a link or some explanation of what the socratic method is maybe? Looks great for the rest :)

@Cashbee What did you do?
@Tinkeringbell nothing.

then it suddenly showed. You mean you still can't see it? it fixed only for me?
@Cashbee I can see it, but I've got a userscript running ;P
@Ash It's a sad state of affairs that never ends
You always need to explain yourself, you always need to be polite in the face of people who aren't, always take the high ground, let no weakness show, and be iron clad in your argument
and even then some people just walk away because the emotional work of processing the discussion doesn't interest them
@user5389107 That almost sounds like moderating SE ;)
09:24
And then you get told you're emotional or overreacting and people gaslight the hell out of you and it takes a therapist and years of work to unpack it
clearly I have some biases of my own that show here
@user5389107 Everyone has those ;-). At least you're trying.
I've met people that don't, and it gets a whole lot more frustrating to be on the other side if you notice people actually don't (and I know, because they told me).
mean people are everywhere
isn't that the motivation behind having a "thick skin"?
for me thick skin means I bottle all of that pent up frustration up until I get a breakdown
which is unhealthy
doesn't help that my family really dislikes shows of weakness
right, don't bottle-up anything...
@skull use zip bags instead
09:33
if it bugs you, let it out right then and there
what i meant by "thick-skinned" is like water off a ducks back
don't let anything sink-in
i've had people swear at me literally two inches from my face at work; but i just either walk away or swear back
ussually, the former :)

@skull Well, there's truth in everything there ;-)
including all the down votes?
Yes, it's 'easy' to have moderators on the list, since then you can easily see who is a moderator ... but that'd mean people will most likely bypass the 'regular' room owners and go straight to the mod
As for that idea of having the room owner picked based on activity, that's how I became a room owner in the first place.
The previous one hadn't been around for a long time, and then a new room owner get's automatically appointed based on activity

That assumption is at best corrollary to OP's question. His question is more along the lines of getting through to people, which you don't acknowledge or address at all. Also directly stating that anyone from a minority group is "likely" to claim sexism/racism/homophobia at every slight is offensive and wrong.
