@bigbadmouse My friend and I were talking about how language is this really precise tool that you can use to convey very precise ideas efficiently with small numbers of words, like a surgeon performing surgery. Then I realised that when I spoke my second language, I felt like a great baffoon going around bashing people over the head with this really blunt instrument which was my second language. But the instrument gets sharper without you realising it and one day you realise it's actually not that bad, and when I use this instrument, people actually get what I mean and respond. Oh wait.
Git is a term of insult with origins in British English denoting an unpleasant, silly, incompetent, stupid, annoying, senile, elderly or childish person. As a mild oath it is roughly on a par with prat and marginally less pejorative than berk. Typically a good-natured admonition with a strong implication of familiarity, git is more severe than twit or idiot but less severe than wanker, arsehole or twat when offence is intended. The word git first appeared in print in 1946, but is undoubtedly older. It is originally an alteration of the word get, dating back to the 14th century. A shortening of...

A: How to tell flatmate to remove her pets, since it's not allowed?

TheikSupposingly the landlord does not allow rats as pets, how to tell her to permanently remove all her rats, without resulting in conflict and her being kicked out? You don't. Period. To her, the rats are not just rats, they're her pets. Quite possibly, she values them more than she values her fri...

Is this a 'good' answer?
They explain why and how asking may be wrong if you want to avoid conflict?

NVZ
@JAD Looks familiar. What's that comic series called?
@Tinkeringbell It is useful "don't do it" advice to me. But my words don't mean nothing compared to IPS "rules" :P

JAD
I disagree with the point though

@NVZ It's from the cartoon Steven Universe

JAD
Rats produce a lot of odor, so "learn to live with it" is not necessarily feasible

1:37 PM
@JAD I'm struggling with those 'don't do it' answers...

NVZ
@JAD Hamsters are fun rodents. Is it hams there?

@JAD It depends on how heavily you weigh "Avoid conflict".

@JAD I've never had a rat...
@sphennings Yeah, does the user want to avoid it entirely or just minimise the chances?

Personally I'm fine with an answer that says "You can't solve this problem without conflict. Here's how you can approach the situation to minimize the conflict."

JAD
@Tinkeringbell hmm, a flatmate during uni had rats, and you could notice when he had his door open
also, I used to have rats temporarily

1:39 PM
@sphennings I'm going to go with that :)

Rats make great pets. When I had them the odor wasn't problematic.

NVZ
IPS rules aside, to me personally, when I'm asking how to do something, I'd appreciate being informed why that's not a good thing to do in the first place.

JAD
@sphennings sure, but the recommendation here is a complete 180 on that

I see a lot of questions with unreasonable expectations.

JAD
it's not trying to mitigate the issue in some other way, it just says "deal with it"

1:40 PM
@JAD It's playing it straight. If you prioritize avoiding conflict you're going to have to deal with it.
It's the other side of the same coin.
@JAD It clearly states that given the constraint of avoiding conflict you won't be able to achieve your goals.

@Theik although the intention of your answer is good, it might be better to write an answer that also explains how to minimise the chances for conflict when asking anyway. That way, you'll a.) answer the 'how to ask part' and b.) make helloworld aware that there is a chance that asking will result in conflict anyway (and what problems that may cause) — Tinkeringbell 56 secs ago

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell sweet.

@Tinkeringbell I think an answer that says "you can't do this here's why." is perfectly fine.

@sphennings We NEEEEEEEEED guidelines :P

NVZ
Please stop arguing about whether the OP should be asking this or not or whether rats are clean or not. We are not here to judge. We require that users here respect the OP's reqest. Really, this discussion pops up way too many times.
(on what a don't answer should contain)...

NVZ
@sphennings It's fine on most stacks. But apparently not on IPS. "How to root Nokia 8?" "You can't, yet."

Lemme see what there is on meta already, I'm already distracted from work now anyway!

@Tinkeringbell Do you see there being a sufficient distance between you don't and you can't?

@sphennings Oh sure, I understand the nuance...

In terms of what is acceptable in an answer on this site.

1:44 PM
Personally though, I like answers like this better: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/9487/1599

JAD
@sphennings I think this reasoning is way too black-white
it's like there are only two absolutes: deal with it, or get them to do away the rats

@JAD I don't think it's a very good answer but I think it's a valid answer.

JAD
that's not the case at all

@JAD If you want to avoid conflict yes.

JAD
reading the question, there is a huge lack of boundaries here

1:47 PM
I get it, I really do... but I'm very wary of 'you don't' because it a.) is probably not the answer the OP is looking for and b.) it can lead to a lot of different problems... like people asking 'how to tell a bestie I'm LGBT?' being answered with 'you don't because it's bad'....

If you really want to avoid conflict, for me it's good to point out that there's a possibility you'll never be able to do so... but give the OP some guidance as well on how to at least try...

JAD
> This feeling was elevated when one guy showed us instagram videos showing her rats being free in the shared bathrooms, with one licking the tab for example, a photo showing one rat being inside a cup from the shared kitchen and he also told us that he saw her once coming to the kitchen area with one rat with her.

@JAD Huh? I don't remember that part

JAD
Anecdote time
I lived in a house with 19 others, where pets were allowed, as long as there were no complaints
Before I moved my pet over, I made sure to talk to each of them, explaining how and what, and most importantly, that he wouldn't leave my room under any condition.

@JAD That was added to the question only yesterday... that's smelly

JAD
Basically showing that there should be no reason to complain, since you wouldn't know it's there to begin with
In the three years that I lived there, I have had no problems with it
Because it was not in your face.
This is the opposite of that:

1:50 PM
@JAD I agree... but I somehow feel that part was only added as fuel for the fire :/

@JAD If you removed the tip from the bottom from the question how would that change your reading of it.

JAD
1) It's not allowed whatsoever
2) There seems to be a big lack of boundaries by the flatmate. Letting them go through the kitchen etc is just... no.

NVZ
@JAD Wow, 19 roommates and pets. Wow. A lot.

@sphennings this? > The part of removing the rats is tricky, since she can agree to remove them but fail to do so.

@JAD Wow, 19 roommates and pets. Wow. A lot.

1:51 PM
@JAD Sorry answer not question.
> Tip: Pet rats are not scary....

JAD
I might be biased when it comes to rats, and I think learning to live with them is fine, as long as the owner is willing to leave them in the room for example

It sounds like a situation where a confrontation is necessary. Regardless of whether the rats stay or go.

JAD
I don't think the rats themselves are necessarily the problem. The rats loose in house might very well be

I'm only considering whether the answers attempt to answer the question or not.

@sphennings It does attempt to... I think we've now progressed to whether we think it was a good attempt or not ;)

JAD
1:54 PM
@sphennings Hmm, idk. It's an entire 180, it's not even attempting to closely adress the question though. What I'm arguing is that there is room for negotiation somewhere in between, but it's not there
I might turn what I just said into an answer.

I'm finding that question weird anyways... the roommate makes a concession, why go behind her back to force her to things otherwise anyways? Why add all the ruckus about how unhygienic the pets are (in the bathroom and stuff) only a day later?.... :/

JAD
hmm
I see that the keeping them in the room is already adressed in the question

We can't tell you what you should or shouldn't do, all we can do is help you to navigate what you decide to do, if you need it. (If you decide not to talk to them again, I doubt you'd need our help for that...) — Kendra 1 min ago

Q: Should I speak to my friends again?

SomWhat I am explaining happened to me 8 or 9 years before, but I just came to know about it and I feel like a complete shit. During my undergrad, I was close with like 8 or 9 friends. Like we always used to hang together and do stuffs. In that a guy started to steal mobiles from fellow students an...

@ExtrovertedMainMan I'm surprised that Smokey didn't pick this up for having offensive keywords.

@Mithrandir Can you put one of your comment answer comments here: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/9852/…

@Catija done

Thanks :D

It was more a "I need someone else to say this" thing... I've deleted three comments by one user there and asked them not to post the comment again

Oh, I see.
I wasn't really paying attention to the comment stream... I'm trying to figure out if I have the flu or not.
(I'm hoping not.)

Oh no!!!! Don't let it be so!!!

Yeah... personally I'm more inclined to think that it's the common cold, but my mother is worried that it's influenza.

When you have to stay in bed with influenza, you have more time to pay attention to the comment stream

9:22 PM
(and considering some of the stories out there at the moment, I'm kinda really hoping it's not)

good luck

thanks :|

hmm
what do we expect from tag wiki edits?
I'm not sure what to do with that one
like, it doesn't specify usage, is that bad?

Me neither. I generally keep away from judging them

JAD
like, I guess it can't harm to put some info there...

Reject; there's no need to copy a dictionary definition of abuse.

Q: How to react to a friend who contacts me after long time intervals but does not respond after I reply and keeps the attitude for multiple times

luminBackground: I have a particular friend whom I was in the same school and class for primary and high schools. So we know each other since like childhood. We are not closest friends but used to meet four times or so in a month until last two years. No apparent reason for not meeting anymore as far ...

A tag wiki should define how the site uses the term, usage guidance, and a small overview of the subject itself.

edit made it better
but I'm still unsure

It's also entirely copied from another source.
Which is a big no-no and a standard reject reason.

9:30 PM
@Mithrandir And the one I used.

JAD
hmm, alright. my bad

@AnneDaunted Still seems like "what should I do".

or a phrasing request

@Catija Heh; GMTA?

honestly, I think the OP is just interpreting too much into her messages
"she texts me once or twice in a month asking how I am and how it's going, I reply and try to chat with her"

9:32 PM
@Mithrandir GMTA?

maybe she wants just that, ask how he is, and that's it

@Catija Great Minds Think Alike

Ah. Yeah. :D

@Mithrandir Do you have a screenshot of an open comment entry field from a week or more ago?

Umm... Possibly, one sec

Something similar to this:

Oh, then no... just the field itself (i.stack.imgur.com/rh88N.png)

Would the wayback machine have it?
I don't know how to use it.

Probably not. The Wayback Machine doesn't have 50 rep.

HAHAHA
Hmmmm.
Well, I probably have one at home...

some problems with layout?

They're mucking with the formatting of comments sections and I think that image is different from what it was a week ago.

I'm pretty sure that SOX was causing some issues recently; d'you happen to have that installed?

Does the comment padding feel off today to you guys or is it just me?

It looks like it is a little more right aligned than it used to be

@JAD Left aligned?
@Mithrandir Nope.

Q: How do I tell a potential partner about my autism?

RainbaconBackground I recently met a woman on a dating app and we hit it off. Last night we went on our first date, which went very well and we are planning to go out again. I am interested in potentially having a serious relationship with her if the next date goes as well as the first. I was diagnosed...

Q: How should household chores be split for non-parent, different work-hour couples?

Basil_The_PeasantMy significant other and I have been together for years, but this is still an evolving discussion. We work different lengths of hours. One of us works a full time job, the other a part time job. What are fair methods to determine how the chores should be divided? An even split? A disproportiona...

"I have added the "India" tag for context but do not consider this a topic of extreme cultural specificity." Considering what you've explained in the comments, that saving face matters even at the cost of multiple awkward lies, I think you've shown that this is a matter deeply dependent on your culture. — curiousdannii 6 secs ago

Patience wearing thin... Must not... React awfully... lol

I think such cultural values giving importance to saving face may be relevant to many Asian and Middle Eastern countries and not specific to India @curiousdannii. — English Student 38 secs ago

@EnglishStudent Yes, but it's clearly not culturally agnostic like that notice suggests. And not all face saving cultures do so in the same way, not all accept lying in this way. Culturally specific questions are a good thing on this site. No need to try to make it generic. That's all I'm saying. I think it would be better to make the culture more overt so that you don't have to keep telling answerers that some lies are acceptable. — curiousdannii 1 min ago

Is there a way to make the comment bot a little lower key?

It needs to be calibrated a bit... It's been quiet all day... not sure why this is triggering it so often.

Any comment made on a post after the don't answer in the comments comment has been posted will trigger it.
It's false positive rate is quite high.

Oh... :/

user15026
Yeah, it's super noisy :(

At least our friend found something to comment on that he actually seems to have some experience with... ;)

Wait... that question doesn't have the don't answer in comments comment.

@Catija There might be other magic comments. You'd have to ask Mithrandir
Scratch that it does have it.
