Anywho...

@sphennings Oh, I missed it due to the page jumping oddly... I was looking at the comments on an answer instead of the question.

12:33 AM
Hi Catija :)
regarding your answer about "echoing", does that technique suggest the use of euphemisms? it kinda seems that way, based on your answer, but based on certain situations, it's a pretty bad idea, actually
I had commented but then deleted them last night ...

user15026
@D.Hutchinson Reading it, it doesn't seem to, it suggests paraphrasing, which is different

I see ...
ok, cool ...
thanks :)

This is not really good enough for a full answer (and you got some excellent ones already), so just a comment. You can change the way you think of such remarks (sometimes that's called reframing). These are really compliments, albeit very awkward ones. You succeeded, and your friends are noticing and acknowledging it. You could simply respond with "Thanks for noticing! I feel better, too." or something along those lines. — Kevin Keane 22 secs ago

Q: How to politely ask friends for favors?

bluevaporI find it a bit awkward asking for help sometimes, especially with friends. For example I need to pickup a piece of furniture but don't have my own vehicle. I would like to ask a friend for help but not sure how to phrase it. Hey, can you help me pick up a table tomorrow with your truck? Bee...

We're still closing phrasing requests, right?
Echo...

Echo... echo.. echo.

2:52 AM
@Catija So... About that patience thing...

What is it with people on this site and the ellipsis?

3:16 AM
I don't know?...

3:27 AM
@sphennings it's a side effect from the way I think/talk. I tend to have awkward pauses and trail off.

user15026
I dont mind it sometimes but it weirds me out if its the only way people end sentences

It's not that people shouldn't use the ellipsis but it really shouldn't be used as a replacement for the comma, and period. </rant>

user15026
(Mind you in chat I often forget to terminate my statements with punctuation.)

user15026
@sphennings Agreed :)

Probably.

user15026
But I am also a die hard descriptivist so I tend to poke the rules with sticks

user15026
(or decide there aren't any.)

Wooo!! Descriptiveism!

3:34 AM
Try reading Irvine Welsh, writes in dialect, fun stuff.

To quote Merriam-Webster:
If you're a stickler for grammar, prepare
to be irked by the singular 'their'
Tho it seems a mistake
The position we take
Is if the word is in use we don’t care

Why would someone who was a stickler for grammar be irked by singular they?

user15026
@Catija Because prescriptivism dictates they is plural only

user15026
Like stuff like this: "The earliest known explicit recommendation by a grammarian to use the generic he rather than they in formal English is found Ann Fisher's mid-18th century A New Grammar, where she writes:

The Masculine Person answers to the general Name, which comprehends both Male and Female; as, any Person who knows what he says[35] (as quoted by Ostade[36])"

user15026
Singular they is the use in English of the pronoun they or its inflected or derivative forms, them, their, theirs, and themselves (or themself), as an epicene (gender-neutral) singular pronoun. It typically occurs with an antecedent of indeterminate gender, as in sentences such as: "Somebody left their umbrella in the office. Would they please collect it?" "The patient should be told at the outset how much they will be required to pay." "But a journalist should not be forced to reveal their sources." The singular they had emerged by the 14th century. Though it is commonly employed in everyday English...

3:39 AM
Someone said there was a rule about it so they stuck with it.

user15026
(sorry, I have mad feelings about singular they)

user15026
(partially because they/them is my pronoun set, partially because like come on people what even)

But it's been used for centuries... there's no reason that anyone should be bothered by it.

user15026
3:54 AM
Theoretically yes but thats why I find prescriptive grammar ideas so funny

heh

I'm all for a style guide, but outside of a formal context it really isn't necessary.

user15026
yeah, like I played by Little and Brown's rules for my papers but the rest of the time I mush language to work my way

... as long as you use full words... and u don sta typin lyk dis.

user15026
Eh, that sort of thing has it's place

user15026
4:03 AM
Like I prefer full words but like...I get how some dialects would use that sort of thing to express themselves

user15026
Not something I'd pick

I'm more of a stickler in a textual medium because there are fare fewer side channels to communicate over.

Yeah, it came out like dialect but I really was just meaning chat speak.

user15026
Yeah, there's so little additional context cues for text

Basically I think people should know "the rules" so they can know when to break them

user15026
4:06 AM
Yeah, basically you cant take a thing apart until you know how it goes together is my thinknig

@Catija there's some truth in that.
So... About that patience thing...

... Really not sure what you're on about.

The comments have been trying mine, not sure if waiting patiently is the best approach.

4:35 AM
What comments?

A comment that just says, essentially "you're wrong"... is not a comment worth keeping.

@Catija Seemed like making him look foolish in public would be more likely to curb the behavior... But then again I'm mean and curmudgeonly like that.

I don't see how that is accomplished.

@Mithrandir I was gonna say, I don't know how you guys pasted the link in here ...

Or left click and copy your URL bar.

ah, ok, cool thanks

@D.Hutchinson If you only post a link, it one-boxes: whatever is written there will become visible here... if stuff is very r/a, it's better to add some text, so the rudeness doesn't linger in chat after the comment is removed ;)

JAD
@Tinkeringbell or just remove the chat message when the comment is removed

@JAD Yeah but 'regular' people can only do that for a few minutes... After that, either an RO has to move the stuff to the public trashcan, or we'll have to ask a mod

@Tinkeringbell I see - what's r/a, by the way? I've seen that a bit used in here ...

He would also start shouting at the most unpredictable moments... that's what the caps-lock reminded me of ;)
Oh, and he always preached for 45 minutes, he always had 3 points he made during that time, and he spent exactly 15 on each... :/
Really, we used to have a perfect preacher, but now even my mom and dad skip church sometimes just to avoid him..

JAD
hmm, I only ever went to church for weddings and funerals

@JAD I liked going to church... I had friends, I learned how to look at the world without becoming entirely desperate... Even when there wasn't much to learn I liked just sitting there and relaxing/meditating/contemplating life.
I must admit I miss it sometimes.

JAD
@Mithrandir hmm, like that

Yes, that is my concern, Mithrandir

@Mithrandir If it's blatantly not answering stuff, why?

JAD
I guess it depends a bit on the nature of the criticism

@JAD my above comment about not answering my question was about the deleted and edited "answer"

9:52 AM
@AnneDaunted We can't comment on that one ;)

JAD
well, I think anyone should be able to judge objectively whether something is an answer or not

@Tinkeringbell just to avoid confusion. That's why it shouldn't be undeleted
it's not that dramatic

@AnneDaunted I hope that vote is just the OP ;) I'm not too worried about stuff being undeleted, since we can just vote to delete it again ;)
Or flag in a mod to lock stuff I think, to avoid a voting war :)

JAD
@Tinkeringbell can OP vote to undelete without privelege?

@JAD Hmmm, that's a good question

9:54 AM
My question about criticising answers: It's not about something not being an answer. Rather why I think some of the suggestions are not so well-suited

JAD
@AnneDaunted hmm tricky, I'd argue you should be able to respond to something with how you feel about a proposed solution. But don't enter a huge argument about it

@AnneDaunted That's tricky... because that might indeed sound like 'please tell me what I want to hear'... :/ You could try asking people to clarify stuff for you...

I agree with you both
Really need to think about it

If I were to do it, I would phrase it like 'If I was to try it, I'm worried that X might happen. Can you explain how to avoid that'?

That's a good way to phrase it. Thanks!

@AJ Good question

I never read the acronym HSV1 or HSV-1 anywhere until this moment. And I think it sounds scary like HIV (yes, it's completely different but it's one of these 3 letter acronyms starting with H). For this reason maybe you should consider just calling it herpes because that name is a lot more common and, at least for me, does not sound scary. — Edgar 2 mins ago

Q: New friend put us in awkward position

LadybuggzA new friend has led a rough life, an ex drug user that still seems to have street ties that come with way too much drama for us. Earlier an anonymous user suggested an edit removing the tag online interaction

I think the point of your boss is that you should have the best overall knowledge and management skills. You don't need to know all the details and every library, etc. But you should know the big picture better than everybody else. That is your job. And if in reality someone junior to you knows more about the whole project and knows better how to manage it then he should have your job. — Edgar 2 mins ago

JAD
@AnneDaunted pretty sure it has/had its own room

@AnneDaunted Oh, that one.. yeah it got frozen
Don't know if it's deleted now?

There's a button on the bottom of the room overview page that lets you view frozen and deleted rooms :)
The checkout lane is frozen, but not yet deleted

I'm not so glad about the way SE implemented the chatrooms, honestly

@AnneDaunted ?

I think they are a bit hard to navigate
But maybe that's just me being myself
Or when I got pinged and follow it and seem to view the room without really being in there

@AnneDaunted Oh yeah, I've spent time looking for stuff myself a few times as well. If I think a room is interesting, I just favorite it :) Then, I can just press 'rejoin favorite rooms' in the morning and see what happens ;)
@AnneDaunted That's what happened when Catija moved the bot stuff to the Sandbox I think? I guess that only happens when someone moves messages...

No, this seems to always be the case

4 answers and 2 questions upvoted in like 10 minutes ;)

a speed reader?

@AnneDaunted maybe? I tend to write long stuff though... :P

a fan?

(I'm also exaggerating, it was only 3 answers and 2 questions, the other one was from movies ;) )

@Tinkeringbell maybe it's so good they're completely convinced after the first sentence?

@JAD hahaha :) I like getting random upvotes on old stuff, I'm not complaining. Fans are cool too. :)
(I hope they find the research question too... that could use some good will ;) )

If you find out who it is - send them a link to my profile?
Thanks

@AnneDaunted I will :)
I could include a link to your profile on my profile? :P

@Tinkeringbell Actually, they just move air around, and don't actually cool things, but you know, the difference is immaterial.

@Mithrandir Okay, let's call it a cultist then :P
But we were gossiping about that bot ;)... it's maybe still a bit too unrefined?

Well if I'm the only one who's ever working on the regex...
(hint hint)

@Tinkeringbell There may be an upvote bot targeting you ;-)

@Mithrandir Hmmm... That's true too, and getting it out of this room isn't much of an incentive for people to help you improve it! :P
@AnneDaunted A very slow one then, I haven't seen any upvotes the last 3 minutes or so! :P

Exactly... help improve the regex, help reduce the noise ;)

JAD
I highly doubt this is really something you can solve with regex
Seems to me like it's more of an NLP problem.
Mostly with an eye on the false negatives btw. You're missing a lot of stuff, simply because a regex can't interpret what's being said. You're just fishing for keywords.

Yeah. I know.
Implementing natural language processing would be cool but I wouldn't know what to do with it.
