@Magisch hello!
Anyone here know if it's possible to assert a certain format of a filename e.g. with SonarQube or Jenkins?

JAD
do you mean that every file created follows a certain format?

Yeah....
We're using flyway and those have to have at least the right amount of numbers otherwise the files will be executed out of order... :/
So if someone forgets e.g. a number, that file will end up on top and cause errors...

JAD
sounds like something you want to check in a commit hook

Now, they want me to write some documentation on 'how to act when that happens'... while I was being taught that 'there's an easy way to do that, that's what we have a buildserver for'.
@JAD Thanks, I'll start the googling from there :)

JAD
I'm assuming that these file formats have something to do with code files at least
or is it that the code is producing files that should follow a format?

7:36 AM
@JAD No, the file formats are for .sql files.. :)
That we handcraft :)

JAD
and I assume commit into some version control system

@JAD No, we use a usb stick to share stuff :)

@Tinkeringbell hmm, that might be trickier

For six months of the year, from February 1 to 31 July, it's under Spanish rule - and for the following six months - it's under French control. Q: Is there any research showing whether sandwich feedbacks are more effective than other forms of feedback?

TinkeringbellSo, I've been taught to 'sandwich feedback'. For those that are unfamiliar with the term, it means you start and end with giving compliments, and put the feedback in between those compliments. For me, this feels very unnatural though and fake though. My gut feeling tells me it's unfair to make ...

Ugh, the hypocrisy of some people :/

Interesting question.

@Mithrandir If you could also upvote my comment so it stays visible that would be nice :)
I expect more comments :P

@JAD Read it, summarize it and make an answer :P
Btw, that doesn't specifically mention sandwiching does it?

JAD
hmm, found another paper, specifically on the effectiveness
@Tinkeringbell it's in image format, so no searching D:

@JAD let's just pretend I don't know that! :P Really, the answer I wrote encouraging research questions got a nice amount of upvotes... Should I then only ask questions for which the research still needs to be done? :P
(I just basically turned my question into a list type question :/ )

JAD
12:59 PM
not sure why the answer was downvoted though :S

@JAD I think I have a hater, and they're just being nasty to you too for answering my question :)
Btw, I just spent almost the entire day trying to implement the regex filename stuff into SonarQube (you can make a rule for that), only to find out that we need a commercial plugin we're not going to get if we want to scan anything else than some default packages :/

Really, I consulted the co-worker and they were very anti git hook this morning and now that SonarQube doesn't work they're suddenly all for it ... they're being confusing! :)

JAD
xd

morning?! @sphennings

JAD
I'm not familiar with SonarQube, like if it's real-time or not

@JAD We have it running. It executes everytime Jenkins finishes a PR build and uploads some code quality feedback to GitHub
Or something like that. It's not like I know how it works either, I only learned Java not all this operations stuff.

JAD
1:06 PM
Hmm, I never worked on big projects, so idk either

I'll figure it out eventually ;)
I have a first close vote ;)

@Tinkeringbell fwiw, I know people who are incredibly good at the sandwich technique to the point that it feels totally natural. It's just anecdotal, of course, but I think the technique can feel forced and ineffective, as you described, but it can also feel genuine and be quite effective.

@Jefromi Yeah, but knowing makes you suspicious ;) At least for me, if someone gives me sandwiched feedback, no matter how natural it may be, when I reflect on it later on, I always start to doubt how genuine the compliments were or whether they where just there because the sandwich needed bread ;)

JAD
Hmm, my personal guess is that it's not as much about the formatting (sandwich or not) but more about the other factors, like the exact criticism, the mood of the people involved, etc.

That's the thing, though, I'm saying if they're good at it they really give genuine compliments that even afterwards seem real, and you end up with the impression that they really do see both good things and things to improve.

1:13 PM
@Jefromi Ah, so I just don't know the right people ;) I'll try and find someone that can do that, and ask them to teach me :)

JAD
@Tinkeringbell or you are too suspicious :p
honestly, accepting compliments is a skill too

@JAD I admit that I don't score very high on that one ;) I can do it, but like I said, sometimes it just feels like people are faking them...

Both seem true: giving criticism and compliments well is a rare skill, and avoiding defensiveness and trusting others' compliments is too.

JAD
hmm, I have similar problems though

@JAD upvotes are easier to accept than compliments? :P

JAD
1:16 PM
Few weeks ago I got some feedback which made me raise my eyebrows. It was positive, but I didn't really feel like I was doing that good to warrant that though.
Then again, it came accompanied with a big raise, so I guess it was genuine

I'm interested to see whether the close-votes will pile on... starts to prepare a nasty meta post! grin and maniacal laugh
@JAD Nice :)

JAD
@Tinkeringbell upvotes are always welcome

That's often a good indication that they're not just looking for something good to say indeed ;)

JAD
@Tinkeringbell best response to positive feedback: "Oh just shut up and give me money"

@JAD Unless people are actually giving you feedback that means you have to improve :P

JAD
1:18 PM
there fixed it

This may or may not help, but one way to look at it is as giving a full assessment, rather than just what you want changed. I know that's not always possible, sometimes an experience is entirely negative. But sometimes it's actually more accurate to give the compliments. "I liked these two dishes, but not this one." versus "I didn't like this dish."

@Jefromi Telling people you didn't like their food is impolite either way ;) I get the point though, and I think I'm mainly struggling with the fact that I know very well what I don't like vs. I can't often point out what I do like

@SmokeDetector Oh damn... I always forget to write comments first and vote later... now it's deleted without feedback :/

@Tinkeringbell yeah, it's tough, for sure - both in the sense of stepping back enough to stop focusing on the beginner, and in the sense of actually identifying the positive instead of taking it for granted.

Not an answer, but something to consider: are your partner's standards for ascertaining whether a chore "needs" doing lower than yours? Are they, for example, happy to let washing pile up in the sink until they run out of clean cutlery? I mention this because it's a common root cause for this behaviour and, if so, a key part of your approach to this problem ought to be helping them understand that your standards are higher, and that's part of the reason for your dissatisfaction. — Bob Tway 58 secs ago

@Tinkeringbell yeah

JAD
@Tinkeringbell I don't think it's a bad frame challenge tbh

@JAD Of what? It's basically saying 'I couldn't find any evidence either!'

JAD
that it is a really hard thing to scientifically study
that's slightly stronger than "I couldn't find anything"

@JAD At most, it then is a comment to the comments there, that this can't be solved with a quick google search!
Btw, I'm asking for comparisons to other feedback methods in the question, not for the standalone effectiveness of sandwhiching (which the answer seems to suggest)

JAD
@Tinkeringbell your question is "Is there..." which could plausibly be answered with no

2:07 PM
It's basically arguiing on the definition of 'effective' which is something a good study will have defined before comparing stuff
And then it's assuming a question that isn't there.

JAD
@Tinkeringbell ok, so if study A has definition foo for effectiveness, and has as outcomes that sandwiching is good, and study B has definition bar, and turns out negative. How are you going to reach your conclusion?

It seems like some of the answers are not ideal because of your cultural context, perhaps you should add a location tag? — Em C 31 secs ago

I'm more miffed by the backlash to the question asking if there was research about the efficacy of a particular feedback technique.

@sphennings This is something we're going to really have to fight for. People will balk at them over and over until they start becoming a bigger part of the site... which they should. I'd much rather see that sort of question than "how do I tell my ____ that I ___ without getting ___".
