11:01 AM
@Tinkeringbell Unbore yourself :p

@Magisch I'll have a meeting at 2. So one hour of reading documentation left ;)

A J
@Tinkeringbell Then what are you doing here? Go read that documentation. Or have you read it already? ;P

she probably wrote it herself

@AJ Being bored? I already read it once or twice, and I really want to know what I'm supposed to do with the information now before going further. Luckily, that's what the 2pm meeting is about :D

A J
@Tinkeringbell 2 PM? It's almost 5 PM now. Aren't you late for the meeting?
Oh. Timezone. ;P

11:11 AM
@AJ Tink and I are in the Amsterdam/Brussels timezone, here it's 13:11 as I type

A J
@Cronax I know. I was kidding. :p

I couldn't resist being pedantic about it :D

@Cronax Not for long, once my evil masterplan succeeds :P

A J
@Tinkeringbell which masterplan? Drowning the Netherlands?

@Tinkeringbell Oh? Which timezone do you plan to move to? or are you going to follow through on your plan and make Amsterdam into Atlantis V2?

11:14 AM
@AJ flooding, not drowning :P

@Tinkeringbell where are you gonna go, once finished with th eplan?

Knowing us Dutchies and our propensity for making all forms of water our b*tch, I wager we'd find a way to make it work soon enough :P

@Cashbee Anywhere I can buy housing, have a good job and travel easily by public transport :)
@Cronax I'm surprised no Dutch hydroengineer has already filed an evil masterplan answer :P

This just in ! I failed my finals.

@Tinkeringbell So, nowhere? :D

11:16 AM
Yeeeeee

@Dastardly nooooo

arent the netherlands too beautiful of a place to be even considered flooded?

@Marcus Define 'beautiful'....

@Dastardly My sympathies :(

Well, I'll do better next year.
Hopefully

11:17 AM
@Dastardly Oh no :( I'm sorry :(

@Marcus If you're a fan of boring endlessly flat lands, then I guess it could be considered beautiful

finals in what, if you don't mind me asking?

i'm a fan of the series "new kids"

Software programming @Cashbee

@Marcus Ugh... Sad thing is, that kind of people walk around in real life too :(

11:18 AM
@Marcus i only know new kids turbo. it's right up my alley

i bet there are worthier candidates that can/should be flooded than the netherlands

@Cashbee I strongly suspect you're talking about the same thing and as Tinkeringbell mentions, those people actually exist unfortunately...

@Cronax ever been in berlin?

@Marcus I have yet to have the pleasure myself I'm afraid

that place can be flooded

11:21 AM
@Cronax jup I think so too. And while I find the movie very funny, I resent the fact that there are such people

imagine Mos Isley from star wars being a real place

XD
Just because a place isn't safe doesn't mark it for flooding in my book

* play the same song again* - tü-tü tü-tü tütütü cantina band ftw

but I'm the kind of guy who thinks an underworld has it's own kind of charm, so take my opinion with a grain of salt

@Cronax Paris apparently has very interesting catacombs...

11:23 AM
@Tinkeringbell I've seen parts of them that were accessible, they're quite a sight
ofc I did make sure to leave all my valuables in a safe place :P

moscow does have them, too

@Cronax I had a boring teacher on my trip to Paris, so we ended up in the fashion museum. Not even the history teacher could sway her to allow us to go visit the Louvre and catacombs.

@Tinkeringbell Uuuugh...it's such a waste when school trips fail to show the most interesting parts of the places you visit

@Cronax Yep. So, now I'll have to somehow go on my own, which I don't do because I'm too lazy

@Tinkeringbell How's your French? If you need a translator I could come with :P

11:27 AM
@Cronax Je parle Anglais :P

XD

A J
@Tinkeringbell lol

It's rusty, I did my exam at 17, and only used it afterwards on 2 trips when doing the mundane stuff like buying groceries, asking directions, being polite and returning a found ID card to the police station

A J
@Tinkeringbell Come to India then. Pleasant weather all the time. :P

@AJ You call that pleasant? Too hot or too wet :P

A J
11:29 AM
@Tinkeringbell Well, you will get used to it. :P
I did.

@AJ I'll be like the captain that doesn't abandon ship ;)

A J
@Tinkeringbell LOL
Tea break/

I lived in the French-speaking part of Belgium for a few years, so my level is quite decent P:

Avez-vouz 2 euros pour moi s'il vouz plaîtes? C'est pour l'accueil de nuit.
I can get around in france

hahaha

11:30 AM
@Cashbee Hahaha XD
Bonjour, je m'appelle Tinkeringbell, j'habite aux Pays-bas, parlez-vous Anglais? :P

I plan to move to rural scotland or the netherlands
a place where it is generally cold and rainy

@Magisch The Netherlands may soon be wetter than you'd like XD

@Tinkeringbell I definitely got some raised eyebrows from French people when I apologized in advance for my terrible French...in rapid, fluent, accentless French XD

I don't like france

@Magisch France is a great country, it's just a shame that the French live there

11:34 AM
I was in southern france once and nobody spoke english. And it was ridiculously warm
And in San Tropez the ice cream is like 10$
is ridiculous

that ice cream must be really good

10€*

it is not
amusingly, $ is on my keyboard, € is not

@Magisch I searched too xD i have none either. or at least its not painted on
is the ice at least satisfactory quantity-wise?

@Cronax thanks! I also needed to get some lunch in ;) Even just by writing the question and seeing comments I've noticed a lot of things about both me and him. He has a lot going on until Friday so I prefer to postpone the discussion a little bit, so I at least have most of his attention on my side.

11:38 AM
@Cashbee I don't remember. It was over 8 years ago

Funnily enough with all the reflection I've done on our relationship, I've only learned to appreciate him more. Which probably seems odd after such a question but I noticed he has some demons of his own he/we need to work on.

That's nice

@JaneDoe1337 everybody has their own demons. way to go!

@JaneDoe1337 writing things down often gives so much clarity on things

Yeah, I'm really happy IPS is here and am very grateful for you guys!

11:41 AM
@JaneDoe1337 mind you everyone here is working with imperfect information and colored through your perspective

@Magisch yeah I know that, and it's hard to portray a whole person through one question or even description.

A J
@Cronax There are 2 languages spoken where I live. :D

@AJ I' m sure they have wonderful unpronouncable names too, unless one of them is English :D

@JaneDoe1337 I feel you. I was overwhelmed by the support I got when I asked my first question. It has 20 answers, some of them are close to the max char limit

A J
@Cronax Yeah. Hindi and a local dialect.

11:45 AM
I got some decent perspectives on the question about my insensitive comment
although the situation played out unfortunately

@Magisch haha mine too but I gave it my best
knowing that makes it so much better

There is 3 where I live, without accounting for dialects

@Cashbee With how wordy I tend to get, I'm amazed that I've never managed to hit a max char limit :D

@Dastardly 4 national languages here. yay I win

@Cashbee 4 ?
I do too
Now, I'm trying to guess your nationality

11:48 AM
@Dastardly German, French, Italian, Rhaetoromanic
d'oh i guess i spoiled that

German, French, Italien and Romanche

didn't you know it anyway?

OH
Well we live in the same country it would seem

@Dastardly lol what? aren't you french?
you were loki before the namechange weren't you?

I'm miserable with languages

11:49 AM
@Cashbee No. I'm Swiss, I live around the Lemanic region

A J
@Cashbee There are 22 official languages and more than 500 dialects in my country.

even english is only a hackjob and only because of hobbies for me

A J
No one can beat this.

@AJ Now, that's just overkill

@Dastardly ahha lol 😀 Hopp schwiiz
@Dastardly im from around zurich

Sid
11:50 AM
@AJ 23, no?

A J
@Sid Did they make any new language official? Last I heard, it was 22.

thats tirol, isnt it?

A J
I know that people are trying hard to make Rajasthani be declared as an official language.

Sid
@AJ 22 without English.
If you include English, it's 23
I only know 2 out of those 22 languages. >.<
I should learn more

A J
11:58 AM
I do two too if you don't count dialects.

@Sid pff what can you do?

Swiss dialects are pretty hard to understand :o I was very happy there was a ski instructor speaking my language when I went to Lenzerheide

I know english, bad english... tamil ;p

@JaneDoe1337 whats your langauge?
@JaneDoe1337 ooh i love lenzerheide

A J
I know Hindi, English, and broken Telugu.

11:59 AM
@Cashbee Dutch! Although my English is pretty ok I found it hard to understand some of the people with heavy swiss/German accents.

Sid
I know Hindi, English and my native language

@JaneDoe1337 haha yeah some dialects are nasty to understand, even for me 😀

Sid
Although my Hindi is a bit weak (but I can survive)

I figured I can do basic French and German so I'd be fine there but nope :p

@JaneDoe1337 i think the easiest for dutch ppl to understand would be the one from berne. And not only because they talk the slowest.

A J
12:01 PM
@Sid which one?

Sid
Native language. Don't want to reveal that

A J
Ah. Okay. No problem.

I think it didn't help that I was often walking around in 'normal' clothes, in the town etc so people might think I was from around the area and just started talking in their language to me.

I bet his native language is something like Druidic Language and he will lose all powers if he talk about it.

A J
@Dastardly hahaha

12:03 PM
Haha Sid I think that would be a nice comeback next time someone asks ;)

Sid
Ha! I will use that in the future. :P

@JaneDoe1337 which usually is a good sign. You can blend in ^^. But i think if you switch to english there should be no problem. The percentage of swiss ppl who speak english is absurdly high when considering it's not a national language. Dutch ppl are similar iirc

It's a nice variation on the old stand-by of "I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you" :D

A J
LOL

Sid
@Cronax Yeah. I don't want to kill random people on the internet. The CIA is watching all of us. :P

12:06 PM
@Cashbee yeah they often even apologised for it, they're very friendly people. Dutch people are very similar, to a point where people who come here to learn Dutch get very annoyed with us lol

@Sid btw hi marco :D

@JaneDoe1337 screw you guys for being so nice ;)

@JaneDoe1337 Not half as annoyed as when they find out how much of a terrible language Dutch is to learn :D
"Here are the grammar rules for our language. Now forget about those rules for 80% of the cases because almost everything is an exception."

dutch is kinda easy once you mastered german

"Once you mastered german"
"Easy"

12:08 PM
@Marcus The words "mastered" and "German" don't belong in the same sentence ;D

Sid
@Cashbee I don't know what you are talking about. looks away :P

@Sid sry it was a joke from last week
Jun 7 at 12:14, by Cashbee
as this conversation is now being listened to by the NSA, I just wanna say hi mom. Also, hi Marco. I hope the guy reading this is called Marco

I have this thing where I'm okay with grammar in both Dutch and English but don't ask me why certain things are the way they are, they just are.

@JaneDoe1337 do you read a lot?

yes
well, used to at least. Nowadays it's discord chats I read ;)

12:13 PM
@JaneDoe1337 I have never had grammar problems in any language i learned, and I "blame" my reading for it.

yeah that might be it!
I've been on the internet for a long time as well, I think I was 7 when I already browsed English webpages daily and played games in English.

@JaneDoe1337 you remind me of this question :P
the world needs more female geeks :)

what exactly is a geek?

@Marcus someone who geeks out over geeky stuff

It's like a nerd but not the same

12:22 PM
that was very helpful. thank you so much

you're very welcome
speaking seriously though, we're strangers to each other so i'm not sure how to interpret that question -- are you unsure about what people mean when they use the word geek, or are you familiar with it already but you're engaging us in a philosophical question about what defines geekiness?
(or something else)

@Marcus well, there's many kinds of geeks. ;p
It can be seen as a subculture, or a series of subcultures, or even a self identification

@doppelgreener definately not the philosophical stuff
tbh the older i get the less i understand the need of a subculture

It's tied with the need to be part of the swarm, the group. Appartenance.
It's a social strategy.

12:32 PM
@Marcus cause non geeky folks don't get the same things we do

And it's part of a young person defining themselves, working out their identity, and finding where they fit in the grand scheme of the world.

and vice versa ;p

@Cashbee hmm I'm too introverted to have many friends though! But I get her pain. I do the befriend their wives thing and it actually works out quite nicely for me. Sometimes we all go do nice things together, sometimes it's just me and the guys. But I guess it helps I have a boyfriend.
I do still call him my boyfriend btw 'registered partner' doesn't exactly roll off your tongue.

@JaneDoe1337 your man? or is that word reserved only for married people?
hm i guess i meant husband

I don't know, man/husband makes me feel so old ;)

12:37 PM
and yes i see that husband only is for married ppl. Dont listen to me i am brambling a bit
@JaneDoe1337 haha fair enough

there's always the Significant Other when unsure

a bramble

We planned on getting married (again not with shared goods), since we both have no interest in a wedding. But our families were hugely disappointed so we opted for this.

friends of mine just eloped

12:38 PM
@Cashbee I don't think there's a dutch word for that actually...

sign a marriage certificate, tell nobody, when someone asked "oh we married 4 months ago"

hah
@Magisch oddly enough....
that's vaguely what happened with my parents arranged marriage ;p

I feel like that would hurt my parents a lot and for some reason this doesn't so I'm okay with this haha.

In india, they actually give you the cert after the customary marriage, but... they got registered early cause of 'paperwork'

@JaneDoe1337 "mijn SO" just use acronyms. surprisingly I found out that most of my friends know that acronym

12:40 PM
yeah I guess my friends would too

but it feels strange saying that ^^

Plus there's 'vriend' and 'vriendje' which imo helps it get from teenage love to 'actually kinda serious'

I used it once to keep it a secret who it actually is since she didnt want to make it official yet and she was a mutual friend

Did you have a wedding?

@JaneDoe1337 hm? oh no, she didnt want to make it official that we are together. as in boyfreind-girlfriend

12:42 PM
aah ok
We tried hiding it but it was too obvious lol.

my first question, that i mentioned earlier, was actually about her. If you want a good read, take a look. No obligations or pressure though 😉 interpersonal.stackexchange.com/q/6046/8077

"See kids ? That's how I met your mother"
"And this guy ? It's my internet wingman"

internet wingman haha. That should be word of the year

I agree, That's why I want to find an indirect way of making him understand. It's not really about his sweat problem, I understand that. But there are lots of things you can do about it. There are tee shirts that help and deodorant that are really good for this. — I am bored 11 secs ago

Matched regex(es) ["chatty"]

@Cashbee ooh! That was actually one of the first questions I remember seeing here.

12:53 PM
@Cashbee netflix & chill ... now that i looked that up
i feel kind of old-fashioned

@Marcus hm? sry i dont get what you mean

I was hanging out with my parents one day, my dad wasn't feeling great so he asked 'Is it ok if we just netflix and chill tonight?'
And I laughed so hard!

@JaneDoe1337 did you break it to him?

@JaneDoe1337 (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Yes, after I picked myself up from the floor I told him what it meant and he also laughed very hard.

A J
12:55 PM
excuse my limited vocabulary, but what does it mean?

@AJ watching a movie and having sexual intercourse

It's 'code' for having sex I guess? Like you put on netflix but really other things happen.

A J
@Cashbee Ah. Okay. Now I got the joke.

Of course my dad just wanted to watch netflix, he's not a creep ;)

@Cashbee when i was in the age where i'd do that we'd invite each other to watch movies together. there wasnt implicit intimacy involved. everything is more direct now
which i like but still i feel old

12:59 PM
I hate how you always have to find the right time of the film where you stopped paying attention, after the whoopie
:)
wow there are many people here :) just wanted to say to any shy lurkers that they are welcome here and that if the have any questions about this stack (or even something completely different) they are free to ask :)

we don't bite. usually. except for @JourneymanGeek.

A J
@Mithrandir I didn't know he does.

and Magisch, but he stings and pricks more than he bites

Sid
I'm supposed to be paying attention in class. So, even if I have some questions(which I actually do. But, I have forgotten what it was), I will ask later
Also, Ronaldo scored. Yay.

1:18 PM
How I expect most football talks here to go :p

... now I have the 0118 999 881 99 9119 7253 song in my head xD

^ this

There was a time when typing that into the Android dialler would make the dial button flash blue and red.

log @Cashbee now my coleagues were watching me cause you made me "blow air out of my nose harder than normal"
I barely managed to suppress an actual LOL

@Imus hehehe

1:21 PM
also the 3 should be on it's own if you want to stick true to the commercial :p

Di' you see that ludicrous display last noight?

Thing about Arsenal is, they always try and walk it in...

dear sir/madame fire! fire! help me! 123 caridon road. Looking forward to hearing from you.
all the best,
Cashbee

@Cashbee ehh
I'm only prickly when touched

No, that's too formal :p

Q: How to tell my team that they are doing their work in the wrong / poor way?

Angelo BerzacolaI'm an Android Developer in a big company. I started to work here less than a month ago. However, since I arrived, I have noticed that some of my colleagues are doing work absolutely wrong in some aspects, generating a LOT of rework for us later on. How can I tell them the right way to do their...

that smells very workplacy
@Mithrandir Only if folks deserve it ;p

@JourneymanGeek has a good place here too imo

@JourneymanGeek does ash actually bite?
doesn'T seem the type to imo

Ash?! Bite?! I won't hear of it.

@JourneymanGeek I'm guessing it would end up being a dupe of this on workplace, but the "how" makes it on topic here too

1:38 PM
It's an edge-case, it could probably survive in the workplace with a lot of reworking, but I think it's easier to turn into a decent IPS question

@Henders Ash seems more like the type to look at you judgingly, which would hurt more then a bite :p

Exactly! I think we had a conversation about it in the Litter Box recently.

@Magisch not really
He used to bit as a puppy, and bit someone once but he deserved it.
But yes, the judging or sad look is probably a lot worse

Sad ash look should probably be classified as a weapon of emotional terrorism

One can literally hear the tiny violins

1:43 PM
@Magisch Under 'Weapons of Mass Distraughtion"

I swear if I had a dog like ash he'd get away with everything

to an extent... he does ;p
But he's a good dog ;p
hmm
@Magisch like many hunting dogs, he's a bit high energy - especially as a pup
the trick is to put that energy somewhere
we tend to hide toys and make him find them cause he prefers that to fetch ;p

@JourneymanGeek I thought he was a comfy senior citizen by now?

@Magisch oh, he still gets bored

@JourneymanGeek Like my parent's dog. You throw something away. He runs after it and brings it back to about a meter away... then waits for you to move. The moment you move he's gone again

1:48 PM
@Imus he finds fetch... undignified

that must be it :)

used to do that, and do the "not giving it back" thing

Is ash ok with cuddling?

on his terms
he's a carry/lap dog more than a cuddle bug

my ol' cat used to enjoy being picked up and cuddled

1:51 PM
@Magisch reminds me of the shouldercat youtube vid I saw recently :o

ash likes being carried, either in my arms, or sometimes, highland cow style

but she had trust issues for almost a year after a family friend kicked her

ahh that was so long ago

1:53 PM
@Imus tim & eric awesome show great job variant: the person trying to do this doesn't know what they're doing and fails horribly and gets mauled increasingly by the cat over the course of the video

if there's a cat there's a way to cuddle it

@Magisch I stick with plushies. They don't eat as much and they don't produce vet bills either :P

@Tinkeringbell well
we didn't exactly get ash the normal way ;p
He used to belong to a B grade tamil actress ;p

@Tinkeringbell vet bills wouldn't be the problem for me rn though

I live in a house with two Maine Coons. They both like to pretend that they hate cuddling, but they fool absolutely nobody.

1:57 PM
:3 maine coons

I'm told maine coons are kinda dodgy doggy

@Magisch They wouldn't be for me either... but I needed a pluspoint for plushies XD

But I don't have DPS with cats

@Cronax 2? That means you have a spare one XD

they're extremely fluffy

1:58 PM
though some of the local cats cough allow/demand pets when they're in the mood

@Tinkeringbell Never! They're not even mine and still I go into full cat-dad mode around them XD

sadly we lost two of the local strays and no cat seems to have replaced them yet

cats seem to like me
I've never actually had issues with cats hissing at me or not letting me come close

@JourneymanGeek is it usual to give your dog a SE account and make him mod on arqade?

@Cashbee different ash ;p
our Ash is a boy ;p

1:59 PM
;)

there's 3-4 dogs called ash so we sometimes call him "Old Man"
