@egreg @Artillect Well, we in general discourage the close--improve--reopen strategy, we much more prefer comment--wait--ifitsneverimprovedandweforgettocloseititsnotabigdeal.

8:44 AM
Dear users. I'm not a moderator. But in my opinion the picture of a minor on a user's profile should not be there tex.stackexchange.com/users/126928/rizaldi-rustam

@Sebastiano eeeer. There is no way to remove all the pictures of kids that people have as their profile image - lots of people have it. There is no reason to assume that that's the picture of a relative/friend/whatever of theirs - the picture might have come off the internet. There are lots if pictures of kids on SE; it's not the biggest problem.
Also, in addition, next time you have a problem with a user on a specific site, raise a custom mod flag on that site. Chat mod flags alert every mod on the network.

@Mithrandir I have understand for next time. But I remain convinced that pictures of children should not be there.

@Sebastiano I'd report to the staff: they can make this kind of 'legal' judgement

@JosephWright Hi Joseph. Thanks a lot lot.
@JosephWright Another question: How come the TeX.SE site updates the score with very late?

9:00 AM
@Sebastiano ?

@JosephWright My score is updated late. It happens only to me?

@Sebastiano If you mean there is some delay between seeing '+10 for ...' and your overall score rising by 10, then this is not general: again, one for the staff

@JosephWright I edited some questions and the score was updated just this morning. I look at the scores. What should I do exactly?

@Sebastiano Let me check the rules on edits: the rep there might be awarded at the end of the day

@JosephWright Thankssssssss a lot lot lot. Best regards from Sicily.
Good morning to everybody. At the next chat.

9:09 AM
@Sebastiano I think you only get the rep once the edit is approved, which might take some time
@Sebastiano Also, as you've now got 2k rep you won't get any more for edits

2 hours later…
11:06 AM
@JosephWright Now I am 1,997 (:-(). When I edit any answer I haven't no score +2.

yo'
@Sebastiano the system can be slow on these +2's, also I'm not sure how exactly it works so close to 2k

@yo' thanks a lot. Can I ask you a favor, please?

yo'
@Sebastiano go on, I'll see what I can do

@yo' Can you vote my question and my linked? ...and good morning
@TorbjørnT. good morning

@UlrikeFischer You got a reply to your comment on the mwrep question. (The one with the MikTeX installation issues.)
@Sebastiano Morning.

yo'
11:13 AM
@Sebastiano not something you should do, beg for upvotes :-)

gooddd morning @egreg
@yo' Thanks . The score +10 correctly work well. sometimes I not understand the english language and the mechanism of the site TeX.SE

@Sebastiano nobody understands the mechanisms of the stackexchange rep system!, it's best to ignore it. Sometimes your rep goes up, and sometimes it goes down, but it doesn't really matter in either case.

@DavidCarlisle Hiiiiiiiiiiii
@DavidCarlisle At this moment I am in tilt with my students.

11:33 AM
@Sebastiano I see 2011 for your rep: perhaps it's an issue with your browser refreshing the data

@JosephWright i refresh my browser at least 100 times :-( Today I have had on my questions 2 downvote on nice-answer

@Sebastiano Joseph has mod powers but I also see 2011 if I look at your profile page

11:48 AM
@DavidCarlisle I have seen my profile. there is 2011 correctly.

@Sebastiano so other places the number shows will update at some point, not everything always updates at the same time.

@DavidCarlisle @DavidCarlisle I have seen my profile. there is 2011 correctly. when I pointed out the delay problems of someone voted me score my two negative issues

12:03 PM
@Sebastiano you get downvotes from time to time, normally we suggest people who downvote leave a comment, but not everyone does, and certainly the site is designed such that anonymous voting is the expected behaviour. As I say it is best to view rep as some arbitrary number that goes up and down.

1 hour later…
1:24 PM
@egreg are you planning a treatise on Unicode, or do you think that question is "too broad"

@DavidCarlisle I'm thinking about it.

@egreg I thought so:-) (I'll leave it to you then)

1:52 PM
Side effect of using LaTeX: when you're writing a Sas program, you use % to comment a line...

2:08 PM
@DavidCarlisle Dearest, for my opinion I have, here, some enemies :-) Excuse me always.

@Sebastiano There are no enemies here ... sometimes users have a different opinion, but that's not hostility

@ChristianHupfer Christian, I'm joking :-( and meanwhile hiiiiiiiiiiiii from Sicily
welcome into chat @GregorPerčič
@ChristianHupfer It is not that you offended? I was just kidding

Q: Relationship Unicode vs. Computer Modern

user10324What is the relationship of the Unicode and the Computer Modern font family? I have the impression, after browsing through wikipedia, that Unicode is not a font, but just an encoding, whereas CM has nothing to do with encoding, as it is a font - but I can quite put my finger on the difference. ...

How do people see this: is it on-topic (as it stands)?

1 hour ago, by David Carlisle
@egreg are you planning a treatise on Unicode, or do you think that question is "too broad"

@JosephWright In part, but much to broad. There is material for a large book, see tug.org/TUGboat/tb29-2/tb92vieth.pdf

2:41 PM
any points to manually creating data for a 3d (f(x,y)) plot in pgfplots via external gnuplot? Note I do not want tikz to run the gnuplot, just for gnuplot to create the xyz data for tikz to load via external file. My GNUPlot FU is not great

@s.harp testing

@daleif set table ... but I don't know how pgfplots reads the data...

@ChristianHupfer I think I have the tikz part down, my issues are the data generated by gnuplot. Tikz does not draw as many lines in the y direction as in the x direction. Not sure if data id missing from the gnuplot output, or if tikz does not reasd it correctly

reset
set terminal qt

set isosamples 50

f(x,y) = exp(-0.5*(x**2+y**2))

set xrange[-3:3]
set yrange[-3:3]

splot f(x,y)

set table 'daleif.dat'

replot

set output
@daleif: Does this help -- it's really quick and dirty
You will get a file with records for each isoline and 4 columns. I can't remember what the fourth column stands for (checked now: It's some information.) I hope pgfplots can be configured to ignore the 4th column

@ChristianHupfer hmm set terminal qt is unknown on my system
Other than that, I think this helps, thanks,

2:53 PM
@daleif: use another terminal then ... set terminal wxt works on Windows, as far as I know
I still use x11 rather than qt, but I thought qt would be much more platform independent

@ChristianHupfer Have no idea what they do, I just uncommented it. Interestingly if I switch your example to f=x*y on [-1;1]^2, then tikz still does not write an equal amount of lines in each direction
Not sure if this pgfplots warning is relevant since I'm accessing data using index 0,1,2
Package pgfplots Warning: Table 'data9.txt' has non-unique column name '-1'. On
ly the first occurence can be accessed via column names. on input line 29.

@daleif: The output of set table produces a gnuplot comment header, i.e. with #.... I am not sure pgfplots does recognize this.

@ChristianHupfer also the terminal part does not seem to fit this as we are not generating a plot only data. I'll see if I can find an option to remove the comments to see if that helps. I have to leave for today, more testing tomorrow.

3:09 PM
@daleif Well, keep me informed ;-)

1 hour later…
4:39 PM
@ChristianHupfer Hi - online?

@Dr.ManuelKuehner Ja

@ChristianHupfer das ist alles... :)

@ChristianHupfer Vorsicht: Ich habe deinen Geheimcode geknackt

4:42 PM
@DavidCarlisle Not in your wildest dreams ;-)

@Dr.ManuelKuehner Use two different presentations. The talk with lastpage before the apendix, the handout with lastpage at the very end.

@Johannes_B Thanks for the advice. ATM I choose a different approach (deadline is coming) and I still may have to jump# to the appendix during the speech (depending on the reaction/questions on the crowd)

@DavidCarlisle Dunkel wars, der Mond schien helle - Als ein Auto blitzeschnelle, langsam um die Ecke fuhr - ...

@DavidCarlisle Sorry if there was too much German for you the last couple of minutes.
@Johannes_B Mich hat es heute fast weg geblasen...also ja, Mistwetter in meinen Augen ;)
@DavidCarlisle :)

@Johannes_B No it's getting darker but it is quite ok. Will you be in Zeuthen?

4:51 PM
@Dr.ManuelKuehner You could still do that.

@Dr.ManuelKuehner Oh no my German is excellent as @ChristianHupfer and @Johannes_B will confim.

@DavidCarlisle Do you - by accident -- know the TH show Fawlty Towers?

@UlrikeFischer No, unfortunately not :-(

@Dr.ManuelKuehner yes

@DavidCarlisle Thete is a very funny episode called "Fawlty Towers S01E06 - The Germans"...Don't mention the war :)

4:53 PM
@Dr.ManuelKuehner sadly that is for many of my countrymen all they know about Germany and probably accounts for recent votes:(

@Dr.ManuelKuehner Do not mention the war!!!

@DavidCarlisle I studied a semester in Newcastle and had some native friends there which tought me the perls of British TV (e. g. Fawlty Towers and Blackadder)

@DavidCarlisle Indeed

@Johannes_B Das ist ein geflügentes Wort aus speziell dieser Eposide.
@Johannes_B "geflügeltes"

@Dr.ManuelKuehner Don't mention the war! Eva Prawn - Cocktail ;-)

4:55 PM
@Dr.ManuelKuehner so can you speak English with a Geordie accent?

@DavidCarlisle Well - no :). I also was in Edinburgh and London. The accents are very difficult for me :) About accents -- there is a semi famous YouTube video about English acccents (8 min): youtube.com/watch?v=dABo_DCIdpM
@Johannes_B You are right - I will think about it.
@DavidCarlisle @ChristianHupfer @Johannes_B I am offline now, bye.

@Dr.ManuelKuehner Bye

@Dr.ManuelKuehner See you

5:13 PM
@DavidCarlisle Ich erinnere mich nur "mir knurrt schön der Magen" :):):)

5:39 PM
Hi, is there a free sans serif OpenType font with math support?

@AlanMunn I don't think so.

6:04 PM
@UlrikeFischer Did you notice how the document starts on that Winshell post on goLaTeX? :-)

@Johannes_B yes, and that the document uses \chapter. But I think that first thing the user should learn is to find the error messages and the log-file.

@UlrikeFischer :-)

7:04 PM
@UlrikeFischer Thanks Ulrike, I couldn't seem to find anything either.

@AlanMunn It is something that is really missing e.g. for presentations.

@UlrikeFischer Yes, that's exactly what I need it for (a poster). I find sans fonts much better for that purpose.

@AlanMunn Yes, but the math font designers didn't really accepted until lately the need for such a font.

@UlrikeFischer Which I can also understand, since the serifs do a lot of work in a math font, I think. (Or maybe it's just what we're used to.)

yo'
7:35 PM
@AlanMunn there are math fonts that works (imho) nicely in talks, but cm/lm is not one of them

@AlanMunn I think part of problem is also that they don't know what to do with \mathsf ;-). And that they don't find sans serif "professional".

@yo' Yes, for presentations yes; for posters sans fonts are still more readable IMO.

Arg
Something in this overly complicated RSC template is messing up the size of my captions and I can't figure out what
Ok, so I've now copied MY version of hte header into the template, and recomploied in on my PC and they are STILL not the same
Wait, that looks larger now.
Why on earth was pdflscape screwing that up?
At least it is easy to see why my citations are the wrong size. Might have accidnetly copied some extra commands there. >.>

8:32 PM
@AlanMunn not really although all the opentype math fonts have the sans serif math alphabets, so it depends what you need exactly.

yo'
@AlanMunn (sorry I was connected from my phone, now I'm finally able to communicate better). I don't agree. IMHO Euler (for instance) works nice for both slides and posters. Antykwa Toruńska is an extravagant font that would be distracting on slides, but completely fine on posters, it's got quite thick strokes, and in high quality print, it's very well legible. Also, IMHO, pleasant to read when the texts aren't long (which they shan't be on posters anyway).

@yo' I guess we get used to what we get used to. :) Since I don't use a lot of math, I tend not to think too much about the math fonts overall.
@DavidCarlisle It depends on the particular case, but I usually need some Greek letters, \llbracket/rrbracket and some arrows. BTW stay tuned for a tabular question...
@DavidCarlisle Why does using \color screw up the vertical spacing in the first row?
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\usepackage{xcolor}
\definecolor{ENAColor}{HTML}{00A3DA}
%\renewcommand\color[1]{}
\usepackage{array,tabulary,booktabs}
\begin{document}
\subsection*{Experiment 1}
{\centering
\begin{tabulary}{\linewidth}{clCC}
&\color{ENAColor}Example &\color{ENAColor}D &\color{ENAColor}V\\
\midrule
SG & La señora saca la basura. & ? & \color{red}ø\\
PL &  La señoras saca{\color{red}n} la basura. & ? & –n
\end{tabulary}}
\end{document}

@AlanMunn google for my name and It's not my fault and you'll find an answer posted once a month for the last 25 years:-)
3

yo'
@DavidCarlisle Is it some writing lines punishment? :D

@AlanMunn use \textcolor{ENAColor}{D} (see footnote page 86 of texdoc grfguide)
@yo' it feels that way, sometimes
@AlanMunn for reasons known only to @barbarabeeton Unicode has bold greek sans serif but not normal weight (there was a proposal to put a proposal to Unicode to fix that but it's stalled I think) w3.org/2003/entities/2007doc/bold-sans-serif.html

8:50 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yeah, I knew there was an answer like that somewhere, but I thought it was the "empty cells in the first column" problem, but it wasn't.

My boss sometimes forgets that modern programs renumber figures for you automatically. Even Word does that these days.

@AlanMunn that \centering isn't doing a lot

@DavidCarlisle -- what makes you think i know the reason? (i think it was basically an oversight impelled by the desire to restrict the math alphanumerics to even blocks. there are other things missing in that area as well.)

@barbarabeeton :-) I have to blame someone:-) (I can't believe we got all the way through mathml review and none of us flagged that, so it's not all your fault)

@DavidCarlisle Yes, I've noticed. :)

9:03 PM
@AlanMunn not opentype math table but ctan.org/pkg/arev?lang=en....

@DavidCarlisle Thanks. Yes that looks promising. For the moment I'll just make do without though. Not enough time to do more experimenting.

@JosephWright Now I have to make a graphical abstract. Effffff. I joined science since I was bad at art!

@Canageek I wouldn't worry: there are some truly shocking GAs!

@JosephWright I'd rather not winid up in TOCROFL ;)

@Canageek Doing cover art is even more of a pain

9:20 PM
@JosephWright I know, my boss always requests cover

@DavidCarlisle :-)

@Canageek Goodness

@JosephWright: As a mod, is it possible to move answers between questions?
That is, take a single answer from one question and move it to another question?

@Werner Only by doing a merge

@JosephWright Does that merge the two questions then?

9:22 PM
@Werner Yes

@JosephWright So everything gets merged then... Hmmm...

@Werner Generally we've avoided them as the few cases we have done have not worked out that brilliantly: there's almost always some subtle difference ...

@JosephWright M'kay.
This is a case where such a move would be good, I think:
However, if this is not possible... it's not possible.

@Werner Questions there definitely not the same

@JosephWright True, the questions are different. Hence the suggestion to move the "late answer" over to the other question.

9:30 PM
@JosephWright shrug He figures it puts more eyeballs on his paper.

@Canageek Possibly: it certainly does reduce your consumables budget ...

@JosephWright Not a huge concern as an inorganic lab. Payroll is the real restriction.

@Werner Like I say, that's not possible, though of course someone could post a similar answer to the other question
@Canageek Ah, but you of course are in a system where the two are linked: for me, getting a PhD or PDRA is money I can't 'touch', whereas consumables/travel is my concern

@JosephWright Yeah... I see the current user is not registered. Therefore, they won't receive notifications of comments. If it gets removed (through review or whatever) within the next little while, I'll repost a CW.

@JosephWright No, he can't touch the PhD money once he hires us (sort of), but if he doesn't have money he can't hire more of us if the chance comes along.
@JosephWright (Sort of? I know he has gotten money from the university he has had to pay back on a few occasions if we've run out of money late in the year)

9:34 PM
@Canageek That's what I mean, though: he can use the money for 'stuff' including hires to some extent. I can't: I get given a PhD studentship out of funds I never see, or get a PDRA grant for a fixed number of staff, which again I can't change.

@JosephWright Ahhhhhhhhhh
@JosephWright Yeah, that it why me getting an NSERC PGS D and such are so important. I'm now paid for by the government instead of him for 3 years.

@Canageek I mean technically I can see the costs (in our finance system), but other than minor things (pay scale variations) there's no movement of money between the two pots. So whilst I request £XXXX for a PDRA the bit I see is only £XX

@JosephWright PDRA?

@Canageek PostDoctoral Research Assistant

@JosephWright Ah. Yeah, those come directly out of my bosses grant.

9:42 PM
Hmmm... this might take a while. I'm just going to repost it as a CW.

@Canageek For me, a cover is about the same as three or perhaps four weeks consumables: non-trivial

@JosephWright Yeah, orgnaic labs have to be more careful about that stuff.
@JosephWright We also have a lot more money once we discovered that Sigma will pricematch Strem on orders over $500CDN

@Canageek Synthesis is much the same whatever you are doing (I'm broadly organometallic)
@Canageek Not hard as Sigma are the most expensive supplier ...

@JosephWright Well, when you work on 50 mg scale like we mostly do things get cheaper

@Canageek To be fair, they have the biggest catalogue and fastest delivery

9:48 PM
@JosephWright Oh by far. They are also the only ones who actually will fire seal some of their air sensitive stuff.

9:59 PM
@JosephWright At my old school they were under a day, since we were one city over from the warehouse.

@Canageek I guess that also depends on how they do deliveries: here, Fisher have their own vehicle but Sigma (and others) come by courier, so it has to be at least overnight

@JosephWright I suppose it wouldn't be that hard for P.G. to locally add k back?

@JosephWright Also Sigma has a branch in Canada, whereas for Strem and them we have to go through an intermediary with a large markup

@DavidCarlisle Bruno has fiddled around with some stuff ...
@Canageek Ah
@Canageek Strem has a distributor in the UK: I think independent but trading as strem.co.uk

@JosephWright oh you mean I couldn't just grab the old code? too much work then:-)

10:05 PM
@DavidCarlisle The business allowing # in defaults meant some rearrangements/recoding

@JosephWright yes might be simpler just to add a simple version that just does k_ which looks like is all that's needed

@DavidCarlisle I was wondering about the prop that does O > D[], etc.

10:25 PM
@DavidCarlisle See latest comments on the question

10:37 PM
Question I should ask: I need a graphical abstract made in TikZ based on this paper link. Please show me how to do it. ;) @egreg @JosephWright

11:08 PM
@JosephWright yes just reading. I think the policy of saying we can drop experimental stuff without warning is right, but if we can put an ad hoc package (or answer here) that adds some version of k back it probably wouldn't hurt. (I wouldn't suggest complicating the main code with k and e at same time)

11:20 PM
@Canageek I see no link
