@PrivatePansy Yes, the first placement for a base is freeform, but all of the connecting hubs after that are locked to a grid.

The way League handles microtransactions is probably the best method so far.

Well, except for maybe Warframe's real-money currency that you can trade.

But Warframe doesn't have lootboxes so...

I think adding the ability to directly purchase cosmetics is the right answer. Because essentially, the question boils down to what content do you think comes with the game.

If you think you should have all those skins with the base game purchase then that just means nobody's going to make skins or emotes.

@Wrigglenite I don't agree. Servers are expensive and cost a lot of money to run, and most MMOs do regular content updates in between expansions as well. Devs gotta eat. Including system admins.

@Yuuki Pretty sure that's not true, but they did make massive cuts. Still, Guild Wars 2 has microtransactions with cosmetics and some convenience items.

@Wrigglenite Comparing MMOs to other online games isn't fair though. An MMO is much, much more expensive to run server wise than say, something like CSGO or Starcraft.

Why is that?

Up until recently, CS:GO required a purchase and also has cosmetic microtransactions.

In fact, there's been several scandals involving CS:GO's cosmetic microtransactions.

Most of them involving third party gambling, as I remember

@Wrigglenite Sheer player count is the biggest reason, and unlike a lot of other multiplayer games there are actual servers.

Not that I think those microtransactions are any good, though

A lot non-MMO games just have someone playing randomly hosting the server, although you don't realize it

I think League has the best lootbox implementation and I honestly wouldn't be bothered if they implemented it in a non-free-to-play game. You earn lootboxes via playing the game but you can also directly purchase cosmetics.

A buddy of mine playing it yeaaars ago, were going to buy a bear pet to support it, but it cost $25.

You can also buy lootboxes if you really want to, I suppose.

WoW being a pay-to-play, subscription-based game with cosmetic microtransactions is a bit of an odd duck. Oh and it also has a real-money economy with those token things.

Are they used for anything other than WoW?

I heard there were plans to making it a Blizzard-wide currency that you spend in different games, not sure if that panned out.
