@Powerlord Who? Also, I didn't mean to.

It's a custom mode

@GnomeSlice I meant the reduced spin-up time would only be problematic when you're not pushing/defending a point.

Basically, one player is a special boss character and everyone else battles him
We're playing now on red.ocrtf2.com
but it involves downloading a lot of custom models/sounds/maps

this just made my day:

You get what you pay for.

4:09 AM
But it has an Apple logo

Which is better said this way: Yeah, Apple gouges you for upgrades, ESPECIALLY on memory, but there's nothing out there built better or more reliably.
Probably. That I know of. Whatever.

The real problem is that Mac Pro's aren't really portable, so you can't take them to the coffee shops to help you pick up hot yuppie chicks, so the only advantage to a Mac is somewhat lost.

I mean, hey, I used to build my own gaming PCs by getting a box of parts sent to me in a big old box from NCIX.com or something, I've had it both ways
At some point I just said "f*** it, I don't feel like tracking down whatever driver conflict is making this thing bluescreen anymore"

Then you bought a Dell?

Now I just throw money at the problem and it goes away.

4:13 AM
I bought a Latitude e4310 and it's pretty baller for what it cost (~$800)

As a somewhat-related aside: (link)
> Apple’s customers often get accused of unconditional devotion to the company’s products. But the accusers often have an equally irrational aversion: they blindly and universally won’t buy Apple products. People can buy (or not buy) whatever they want, but if a few hundred million people think Apple’s products are good and fit their needs, and a handful of tech bloggers loudly refuse to buy them even if they have similar needs, which side looks like the irrational one?

Hey, I'll "buy" an MBP when I'm not the one shelling out for it
like if some university is like "do you want a Mac or PC", I'll take a Mac
until then I'm happy with my Dell Outlet computers

Fair enough.

3 of my last 4 have been Dell Outlet, the other was a box of Newegg parts

I have a macbook, I hate the keyboard. No pgup/pgdn/home/end keys.
people like to <3 the mac's, and I find them to be about as stable as win7 on my other laptop.
I don't judge anyone that has a preference, but to me they're just another vendor.

@Wipqozn Yes, comparing the model that even the most fanatical of Apple Nerds would agree is not reasonably priced to a PC is absolutely the way to prove Macs are a bad choice.
Also, lol @ suggesting EULA violating, buggy hackintosh as a legitimate alternative
Also, lol @ comparing MSRP for Office for Windows to MSRP for Office for Mac.

I like the cpu upgrades that they value at $1k. my $70 cpu upgrade runs rings around em all.
is that pic out-of-date?

@DavidB I think itis
Not by too much, but by a bit.
But, honestly, it's pretty pathetic all around in terms of what it's trying to argue.
Mac Pros are a bad deal. This has been the case for at least 10 years. That is not the same thing as saying Macs are a bad deal.

all I know is a 1/2 g per core will not do sc2 3v3 with the two core cap.

The Mac Pro is absurdly priced because it serves a market niche that basically isn't able to use any other machine. The fact that it suckers in a corner case moron here or there that thinks it's going to be a Good Gamin' Rig is kind of irrelevant to the whole discussion.

I bet it'd be awesome at running 20 simultaneous games of bejeweled

4:55 AM
@DavidB They're also Xeons. Not exactly gamer class processors. But if you're doing scientific computing or rendering motion graphics... well then.

yeah, good for graphics processing

The other thing you have to understand about Apple's product cycle is that it moves more slowly than the PC market as a whole and tends to periodically leapfrog it. If you look at most Apple notebook releases - and even non-Mac Pro desktop releases - within a month or so of an update or speed bump, they tend to severely beat non-BYO PC competition on price.
But after a few months they lag behind.

well, that's just the continuous gearbox of pc upgrading at work. every couple weeks it gets a little better.

And then a few months to a year later they leapfrog the competition again.

apple should go into consoles (duh)
they could clobber sony
ps4 launches @$800, two months later - macbox launches same price, who wins? apple, that's who

5:00 AM
No they wouldn't. Who would make games for it? At this point, that market is closed to new entrants unless the barrier of entry for devs is very low. That's how MS managed to get a foothold - they made it stupidly easy to port from PC.
The only other way to get a foothold is first party games, and apple doesn't have the expertise for that. At all.

iphone integration.

Is a nifty feature, but you don't sell boxes unless you can actually use it for something.

objective c, or whatever iphone uses - open it up for game dev
sell your games on the macbox store

That's not a low barrier to entry in the way early Xbox games were.
It's not a market apple is interested in.
But who knows - they've made stranger left turns before.
But yeah, point is that graphic is moronic.
I think this might be the most duped question we've ever had... 5 and counting.

@StevenJeuris ?
It's kind of... useless.

Yes, I checked meta prior to requesting the tag, and I don't see why it wouldn't be valid. "Our current policy is that genre tags are only used if the question is about the genre.". This question obviously is about the genre.

2:42 PM
artillery is not a genre.
I'm not sure this falls under things covered by that meta post either.
An example question would be 'what was the first platformer'?
The tag would be appropriate there.
questions are... exceptions to most of the rules anyway.

k, fair enough, sound kind of subjective though :)

I'm usually wrong about this stuff, so you should ask someone else, probably.

It's not an issue because it's an identify-this-game.

Told you.

Rather, far as I know, Artillery had always been the name of the game, not so much the genre. Though one could make the argument that it is the same case for roguelikes.
I'm willing to yield after some consideration of the matter.

2:48 PM
Well, as long as nobody else asks artillery type questions it's a moot argument anyhow. Perhaps it's better to consider the artillery tag when more artillery questions would appear.

Why can our logo not pixelate properly?

Do keep in mind, though - we'd have to make the tag "artillery-game" if we want it to be the genre. And we really need at least one other question about the genre before we can keep the tag.

@GnomeSlice to be fair it's a genre according to wikipedia
:For other uses of the term, see Artillery (disambiguation) Artillery is the generic name for either early two- or three-player (usually turn-based) computer games involving tanks fighting each other in combat or similar derivative games. Artillery games are among the earliest computer games developed; the theme of such games is an extension of the original uses of computer themselves, which were once used to calculate the trajectories of rockets and other related military-based calculations. @StevenJeuris It can be said to be the name of the genre (hence the settling on "artillery-game" as a tag). I'm more familiar knowing them as "Scorched Earth clones", but technically artillery does predate that.

@GnomeSlice I'm probably doing to make the next set 720p as I'll be uploading them further apart, and they'll be shorter too.

at any rate, @StevenJeuris, your question isn't about the genre even if the game you want id'ed belongs to it

Strange.... both metanet's site and the site for N and N+ seem to be down...

@StevenJeuris This is the original game.

That's pretty definitely not a SMB level. They're generally simpler, tighter, more linear

3:55 PM
@badp That's because N is brutal.
Yeah, I noticed that about them. One of the things I didn't like as much, was that there's really only one way to go about them.
I take it you played the original Meat Boy?

I have a feeling I should step out and have lunch instead of chiming in.

@GnomeSlice: Definitely not true in SMB. Perhaps in the flash game, but it's been too long ago since I played that.

Anyway, the original N is free, you should check it out.
Although Metanet's site appears to be down.
