30 secs ago, by Koviko
Manipulating those people into thinking you are posting stolen photos gives you points.

@Batophobia That's a loaded issue. I'm not sure there's a right or wrong on that.

I wasn't finished my thought, sorry.'

Which is actually a very good point.

@MadScientist I always thought the creepshots thing was a bit borderline. It's not illegal to take pictures of people in public

@Frank Yes, but my point is that you can agree that you disagree and just not interfere with what others are doing, even if you believe it wrong, evil, or satanic

6:01 PM
@murgatroid99 It's not illegal to public post photos of people without their consent onto the Internet, either.

@Koviko That means there is still a place for stolen pictures

@murgatroid99 Publishing them without consent is in some countries at least

@KevinvanderVelden Yeah. The Internet.

@MadScientist I don't know for sure, but I don't think it is in America

@Koviko and we should try to not violate peoples rights and remove places where that happens

6:01 PM
People take pictures all the time and put them on the internet without their knowledge

@KevinvanderVelden Why's that?
What right is being violated?

@murgatroid99 In Germany it is not allowed in many cases

@madscientist in the United States, your right to privacy applies in restrooms and your own home if the blinds are closed.

@Unionhawk On that note: If someone consents to photography in their home, is it illegal to have that photo?

@Batophobia That's not what you said, though. You said, "Don't like it? Don't use it". That tacitly condones behaviour that should not be.

6:03 PM
@murgatroid99 if you don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy and you are not the subject of the photo, in american law you may post the image wherever. If those do not apply then it is illegal

@KevinvanderVelden That's why I specifically said "in public"

@Unionhawk You clearly posted that from your mobile device at the library, no privacy for you

@Frank That's like saying if you don't care about gay marriage that you condone it. Maybe you are just neutral.
Everything doesn't require activism.

@murgatroid99 I missed the creepshots thing. Those are always illegal without consent I believe

6:04 PM
@KevinvanderVelden Wait, what are?

@KevinvanderVelden That's not true.

Photos of people in public places are legal.

@KevinvanderVelden Isn't that the same thing we were talking about?

It's not illegal to photograph a person in public. It's at least slightly rude, but not illegal.

6:05 PM
Also, taking a private photo is an invasion of privacy, but is it illegal or just an invasion?
Like, is there a fine or jailtime?

@murgatroid99 it started with stolen pictures

@Koviko I'm pretty sure that if the person expects privacy, it is illegal

@Koviko Which is also a valid point. The attitude I'm specifically challenging is that you should be ignoring everything you don't like.

Creepshots are a different thing

@Koviko This would be very hard to make illegal. "Here is my family at Disney World with all other people Photoshopped out to avoid legal issues"

6:05 PM
@KevinvanderVelden OK, then I don't know what you're using the word "creepshots" to mean

See, now I'm really interested in photography law.
People get really offended when they are on camera and not consenting
Even when their consent isn't required

Photography tends to be protected by the law through copyright and moral rights. Photography tends to be restricted by the law through miscellaneous criminal offenses. Publishing certain photographs can be restricted by privacy law. Photography of certain subject matter can be generally restricted in the interests of public morality and the protection of children. == United Kingdom == === Legal restrictions on photography === In general under the law of the United Kingdom one cannot prevent photography of private property from a public place, and in general the right to take photograp...

Television has made people think that lack of consent means they can't be filmed or photographed

@murgatroid99 you started with creepshots, I've said stolen pictures all along. Stolen pictures being: Either stolen from computers or (not technically stolen but same problem) private consensual porn that is shared without consent (of both parties)

Specifically, in the US:
> It is legal to photograph or videotape anything and anyone on any public property

6:07 PM
When the "consent" is just using your likeness for commercial reasons, not pointing the camera at you.
Which is an employment issue: actors are paid. You consent to not be paid.

@KevinvanderVelden Actually, I was responding to Mad Scientist's comment about creepshots. Then you stepped in

@murgatroid99 true, I'm also playing games atm
Sorry

@KevinvanderVelden In the true spirit of Arqade!
I'm at work ._.

I'm at work

EXCUSES

6:08 PM
Mwuahahaha

I'M USING AUTOCAD

@OrigamiRobot we can tell

I am currently playing games and am therefor clearly superior to all of you non game playing people.

There's a fucking substitute? Ughhh
Just cancel class sigh

@Unionhawk IN COLLEGE?

6:10 PM
Yuuuuuuup

If pictures of people is illegal, then Michael Collins probably has a few lawsuits waiting for this picutre

ANYTIME OUR PROFESSOR WAS UNEXPECTEDLY SICK OR SOEMTHING, THEY JUST CANCELED CLASS

@Unionhawk I had a substitute once in my Linear Algebra class. I learned more on that day than I did in every other lecture for the course combined.

That's usually how it goes, but not today apparently

6:11 PM
IF IT WAS A KNOWN OR EXTENDED ABSENCE, WE MIGHT HAVE HAD A SUB
OR IF IT WAS A TEST DAY

@Batophobia what people can you distinguish on that picture?
Also, taking is rarely prohibited, publishing is

@KevinvanderVelden Irrelevant, that picture is on the internet, I am in it somewhere without consent, insert angry rant here

One time my professor was sick on the exam day. She just gave the class hundreds. It was the best.

Q: Majesty northern expansion on Android. How can I win that level?

StampedeXVI tried the map dwarves amusement several times already and can't seem to find a strategy that might work. The previous maps all were OK. This one is weird because I lost even faster on easy setting compared to medium (peacekeeper). Any hint how to approach this would be appreciated.

I'm convinced she just didn't feel like grading stuff

6:13 PM
The test scores were probably making her sick

@Unionhawk One time we had a test so hard everyone failed. Next day the prof threw a "Sorry the test was so hard" party and we had snacks the whole period

@Batophobia You're probably obscured by something

HURRY GOOGLE
#compulsivefanboyism

@Unionhawk I had a teacher that if you came in and didn't break anything. you pass.

@badp Your system is dating now?
better keep it away from those i-thingamajigs

6:15 PM
@Batophobia It's ready for it, yes.

@Unionhawk IN MY HIGH SCHOOL THERE WAS A RULE THAT SENOIRS COULD OPT OUT OF FINALS IF THEY HAD AN A IN THE CLASS. WHEN I WAS A JUNIOR, I TOOK A SENIOR LEVEL CLASS. I WAS SICK FOR EXAM DAY AND WHEN I WENT IN FOR THE MAKE UP EXAM, MY TEACHER WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. FINALLY FOUND HIM OUT BACK BARBEQUING AND HE SAID "OH, I THOUGHT YOU WERE A SENIOR AND EXEMPTED YOU. IS THAT OK?"

MY NEXUS IS READY

@badp "In the coming weeks" doesn't mean "right now"

@murgatroid99 how does that help?

@Batophobia System is DTF

6:15 PM
@badp I'm not helping
2

@ori Yeah, that was a thing in high school
Hamstare @koviko

Ah high school
An entire period of life that never matters as long as you were there.

Starbait is so easy

Stop encouraging him.

In a few hours he'll be sobbing in a corner as his every message continues to receive two stars

6:18 PM
NO ONE EVER STARS MY STARBAIT :(

Someone trying to use up their stars for the day?

Speaking of reddit

new indiegaming subreddit

@Koviko obligatory edit: thanks for the gold

You guys are a little harder to take some mornings.. Illl be over there -=>

Is it a new indie gaming sub with blackjack and mods who don't care about self promotion?

6:21 PM
@James in the star list? Don't! Itz filthy in zere

@badp OMG Stop scrolling me into the star list!! Noooooo Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo pft

@DwarfSlice When this is done, let me know again.

@James YOU'LL BE IN THE STAR LIST?

Okay.

6:24 PM
I'm really interested, but kickstarter can fuck off.
As can early access.

@OrigamiRobot Not like this... Not like this

@StrixVaria I like you

@Rapitor That's a first

> You are now an official backer of Basement. Time to tell the world about it!
@StrixVaria They used to just call that 'beta'.

@DwarfSlice OMG He is controlled by text on the internet!

6:26 PM

@DwarfSlice Beta is feature complete, Early Access is feature not even started.

'early access' is just a buzzword

@StrixVaria dun du du dunn dunn dunnnnnnnnn

It's what steam calls it.

I am not interested in alpha or beta versions of games.

6:27 PM
I LIKE THE IDEA OF KICKSTARTER AND EARLY ACCESS. AS FOR APPLICATION, YMMV

Early access is really more alpha than beta

@Unionhawk It's a blanket term, it just means 'not finished'.

Alpha games aren't feature-complete. Beta games aren't content-complete.

There's lots of beta games in Steam's 'early access'.

I hate paying for alphas.

6:27 PM
True

THE FOREST EARLY ACCESS WAS BARELY A PROTOTYPE
7 DAYS TO DIE IS STILL IN EARLY ACCESS AND HAS A BILLION CONTENT

1 billion content.

@OrigamiRobot This is a fair point.

I am still opposed to playing games that are in alpha.

6:28 PM
Beta to me implies that things are mostly there, but maybe buggy and maybe we'll add more content too.

But beta can be worthwhile depending on how far along they are.

Maybe I'm just spoiled, but I'd rather pay for products than ideas and ambitions.

The whole "early" access thing was because of minecraft (of course). because the game could be bought at very early alpha... the only difference was that it was incredibly cheap. and actually updated

I'll just leave this here

This isn't always how it works

6:29 PM
@Rapitor Minecraft is a great example of how indie developers can meet and exceed gamer expectations.

I REALLY WANT THE FOREST TO BE A THING SO I AM HAPPY TO GIVE THEM $10 AND HOPE SOMETHING COMES OF IT.

Most indie developers seem to become... Lazy, I guess?
Jaded?
Annoyed at us?

@Koviko very much. I may dislike Minecraft on principle... but it did everything right.

I don't know how I ever had fun playing Minecraft.

@StrixVaria I agree with that sentiment.

6:30 PM
@OrigamiRobot By the way, have you seen Beasts of Prey?

@Koviko Usually they get funding and do a poor job at managing that income

@StrixVaria Feed the Beast helped

@StrixVaria I pretty much just played Spleef

@Rapitor I never played any mods.

@StrixVaria this
I feel like the developer should be making my content, not random people. But again, I may be spoiled.

6:31 PM
The only mods I used were worldedit + worldguard (on a server), and the minimap.

THE REALLY BAD THING ABOUT EARLY ACCESS IS IT'S REALLY EASY TO BURN OUT ON THE GAMES BECAUSE THEY HAVE LITTLE CONTENT. THEN WHEN AN UPDATE COMES OUT, YOU GET ANOTHER HOUR OR SO BEFORE YOU'RE BORED AGAIN

I did try out MCMMO though

@OrigamiRobot This is why I'm not playing Distance at all until it's done, despite kickstarting it.

@OrigamiRobot This is exactly how Guild Wars 2's Living Story works.

@Koviko Once they get the money, there's little to no motivation to continue working on the game

6:32 PM
A lot of Minecrafts continued success comes from mojang actually giving a shit.

Pixelmon was probably my favorite mod

THEN YOU END UP RESENTING THE GAME WHEN IF YOU'D JUST WAITED TO PLAY THE FULL GAME, YOU'D HAVE A BETTER EXPERIENCE OVERALL

@Chippies Yup, this is probably true. At that point, they maybe think thye can just hire people to finish it for tehm or something

@Chippies Assuming the only motivation for making the game was monetary
A lot of people make stuff because they're passionate about it.
Not me, but people do.

@DwarfSlice A lot of people start stuff because they are passionate about it
Finishing is a different story.
Passion may only drive you so far.

6:33 PM
At least he's honest

EARLY ACCESS AND KICKSTARTER (VIDEO GAME KICKSTARTERS AT LEAST) CAN VERY QUICKLY TEACH YOU THAT THE WHOLE IS FAR GREATER THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS

Humble Mobile Bundle 6 + free game Devil's Attorney

@DwarfSlice when most of your audience has already paid for your game and you still have ways to go to finish it, you may end up with no money and still an unfinished game, which is the case quite often

It's like they're just making all the games from that iKoid bundle free

Wait, did @GnomeSlice have a species transplant?

6:36 PM
@Chippies Or, they made a basic game, got money, hired people to do parts better than they could (graphics, sound, etc.), then got screwed out of that money

My gravatar is a dwarf

Early access is just depressing, really

I preferred ElfSlice.

@Chippies I AM OF THE OPINION THAT PEOPLE NEED TO TAKE THIS SITUATION INTO ACCOUNT BEFORE GIVING A PROJECT MONEY. I'M NOT EXCUSING THE DEVS BY SAYING THAT, JUST SAYING THAT PEOPLE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE RISKS

@DwarfSlice My gravatar is a Red Spy. You don't see me naming myself Spylord or Powerspy.

6:37 PM
That's nice.

@Unionhawk ONE COULD ARGUE THAT ANY FAILING OF THE EARLY ACCESS PROGRAM AS A WHOLE IS ACTUALLY HURTING THE CREDIBILITY OF SMALL DEVELOPERS

Yes, that's what makes it depressing

@OrigamiRobot Basically this. I think good small developers are actually the exception, now.
Prior to all the early access content on Steam, I thought big developers were just stifling the little guy.

IT'S BEST TO THINK OF EARLY ACCESS AS A WEIRD FORM OF INVESTMENT

Really, the little guy just didn't have "what it takes."

6:41 PM
YOU'RE PAYING MONEY UP FRONT TO HOPEFULLY GET SOME AMOUNT OF ENTERTAINMENT DOWN THE ROAD
AND BY EXTENSION BRING SOME AMOUNT OF FUN TO OTHERS

@OrigamiRobot It almost sounds like "you're being stupid" in long form.
Just because you could easily pay for some fun right now
For less money depending on what you find fun.

NOT ALL FUN IS CREATED EQUAL

@OrigamiRobot Except in these cases, not all fun even gets finished being created.

@Koviko THAT'S A RISK YOU NEED TO EVALUATE BEFORE THROWING MONEY AT THINGS

You're also investing in having that game exist in the future, which can matter if you want to be part of that game's community, for example

6:43 PM
@OrigamiRobot this

@OrigamiRobot General advice for investment

Q: In Train Simulator 2015, is there a way to use SI units?

Alexandre VaillancourtIn Train Simulator 2015 (TS2015), is there a way to use the International System of Units (SI) instead of the Imperial units? This option does not seem available from the menus and options. I'll tag this as ts-2013, because I don't have enough rep to create a new tag. If someone could edit an...

@OrigamiRobot I just refuse to throw money at unfinished products. I won't even buy CoD games.

"YOU" AS IN THE GENERAL YOU, NOT YOU PERSONALLY

@Koviko That seems like a non sequitur

6:45 PM
@OrigamiRobot I am the general you.

SALUTE

Man, screw that jump BL1.5 x_x

o7

@Koviko Hah :P

@TimStone IS IT A VEHICLE JUMP? SCREW ALL THOSE

6:46 PM
Yes, and it was terrible

Some games do early access right. Prison architect is an enjoyable game that'll see even more stuff. Other games don't, and just throw something down and promise to fix everything. Like that one werewolf game TB covered and got DMCAd for

And I died six times

But then again, Starbound amirite

@Unionhawk That went away real quick.

6:49 PM
@Koviko There just isn't enough to do in vanilla minecraft. I felt "done" after one play session
now I can make a nuclear reactor and automate everything

@Rapitor You can build a house.

@Rapitor That I agree with. The game somehow always made me strive for efficiency over fun.

So eventually, my whole existence in game was automated.

i GOT FAR MORE THAN MY MONEY'S WORTH OUT OF VANILLA MINECRAFT
HELL, I GOT MORE THAN MY MONEY'S WORTH OUT OF IT BEFORE IT WAS EVEN IN BETA

6:52 PM
Watching my kids play Minecraft has been an awesome parenting moment. I only wish I didn't have to buy it three times so we could play together on a LAN.

drm-free ftw

Developers, get ready for Android 5.0 Lollipop! Check back 10/17 for Android 5.0 SDK & updated Nexus preview images. http://developer.android.com/preview

@Koviko The fun in it for was building the contraptions and making them as fancy and efficient as possible. A steam boiler fueled by a treefarm that is maintained by an automated forester cart is probably my favorite thing to make

At least I know I can stop hitting refresh

@JasonBerkan Xb1 and Ps4 versions are split screen, 4 player split I think

6:54 PM
@Rapitor Good to know for the future.

@Frank Don't be so hostile, please? I am not going to answer unless you tone it down. — NoneOfYourBusiness 1 min ago
Am I being hostile?

@Frank you're always hostile ;)

@Rapitor No, that's just grumpy. :P

@Frank SAYING "SINCE WHEN?" CAN COME OFF AS HOSTILE.

It's a serious question, though. I'm not seeing anything in there that can be seen as hostile.

6:56 PM
PERSONALLY, I DON'T THINK IT'S HOSTILE ENOUGH TO WARRANT THAT RESPONSE, BUT THAT'S ME.

This is probably relevant:

Just to be clear I am very likely to use my supervote to reopen that question if you close that question as off-topic

@badp And I will be very disappointed in you doing so, as there is nothing there that is gaming specific.

@OrigamiRobot This. "Since when?" is rarely a question asked sincerely to learn when a rule was enacted. It's usually a defiant way of indirectly saying "You're wrong."
