Pool intake drains freak me out completely

@Unionhawk Did you not have to dive to get there?

I enjoy swimming, but this ruins most pools for me

@Wipqozn And nobody has a process for improving such mistakes?
I can see it happening once, and then going, "Uh, yeah, we dropped the ball on this. Next time, this won't happen, because we're going to do it like this."

user15026
@fredley I don't like submerged anything, but I have learned to ignore the drains and stay away from them because swimming is the only time I don't feel like a lumbering land whale

user15026
Mind you most of my swimming is in the lake near my parents house.

2:01 PM
Air becomes hyperoxic past like 200 feet

@AshleyNunn Aw. I'm a runner, not a swimmer. Water is too viscous/suffocating for my liking.
@Unionhawk hyperoxic? Full of oxen?

Oxygen toxic

@Unionhawk Which means?
@AshleyNunn Lake swimming I could probably handle, but I've never done it

@fredley Swimming can drastically improve your breathing as a runner. Take this from a marathon runner in college.

Sea freaks me out since I almost drowned in some large waves

2:02 PM
I remember this one site we launched for NSLC (Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation), which was a huge contract. It makes us a lot of money. A few days before it launched we asked the adops team for the ad call to drop into th epage, and they had no idea what we were talking about .The person in charge of this huge important project never told tem.

user15026
@fredley land whales don't run. :p (I have bad joints and I am a giant person (270 lb on a 6 foot frame). So I walk, and swim.

@Rainbolt Did not know

@Frank No, it happens all the time.

user15026
And bike when it is warm.

I want to learn to dive.
Underwater is super spooky

2:03 PM
The partial pressure of oxygen becomes too high, so breathing it is dangerous (to the point that the first symptom is siezure and drowning)

@Frank In fact when we talk to the vice president... and probably ceo too, we're going to outline all of this

@AshleyNunn I'm a beanpole, Running is about the only physical activity I can do well

user15026
@fredley my parents live 5 min from a small Lake, so it is great.

@Wipqozn Then somebody's got to sit on them and tell them that their lack of communication is hurting their potential profits.

@Unionhawk wat

2:03 PM
The solution is don't dive deeper than recreational limits

@OrigamiRobot That's part of the allure

@AshleyNunn Wow, neat

user15026
@fredley ah, fair enough.

@fredley yep

@John That's what I'm saying.

2:04 PM
@Unionhawk So you have to have a pressurized suit?

100% oxygen becomes toxic past 20 feet iirc

@OrigamiRobot Well I'm agreeing.

@Wipqozn Good. And if nothing changes, look for another job ASAP. There's no shortage of IT work.

or whatever you call it

Well, fresh water is spooky. Salt water can be outright scary.

2:04 PM
@fredley no, you breathe air, 21% oxygen

@Unionhawk Oh I see. So just lower the oxygen percentage?

At deep depths, tec divers breathe hypoxic gas mixes
Recreational divers breathe just regular air.
Same percentage oxygen as on the surface m

Q: What would the best follower be for skyrim?

William hendricksWhat would be the best follower a Mage like me could have? I have a level 72 nord mage and I play on master difficulty, and I need something that'll keep the random encounters in check. Something strong, but melee, so I can spam the enemy with destruction spells and level up destruction on the go...

Pure oxygen is expensive and flammable

@Frank Yup. I've been really happy here up until all this moving non-sense, despite the problems, but...well, now they're talking away the fantastic dev space sooooo
Plus now it seems the company is 100% doomed
Before it seemed they were on track to fix it... but it seems their solution is to move us into cubeland. which makes no sense.

2:07 PM
@Wipqozn I'm moving into a very open workspace, where the cubicle walls come up to half the monitor height or so.
Not sure I'm going to like that.

@Frank That sounds terrible.

@Frank You won't. it's super annoying.

Agree; sounds terrible

@Frank Are you going to be in a dev space, at least?

@Wipqozn It's pure IT. Not just developers, but also hardware support, and that sort of stuff.

2:08 PM
That's at least some comfort

@Frank Depending on the size that might not be too bad, then.

@OrigamiRobot in the keys, most of the cool stuff is relatively shallow (less than 30 feet). It's not that scary if you know what you're doing.

It'd be worse if that was combined with, say, being with the admin staff or near the front desk.

Because our dev space doesn't have high walls around each of our desks, which is by design. We don't want them. our team is small and close knit, and we work together really well because of it. In fact we mostly just have the "cubicle walls" so we can hang stuff on them that we print off the internet.

@Wipqozn Sounds cozy

2:10 PM
Because our dev space is inside of a walled room with lockable door.

@Wipqozn Never underestimate the noise a server being booted five billion times during testing makes. It's bad. Also random phone calls, which you have to take because support is busy with things.

@Wipqozn Best use for cubicle walls.

@Wipqozn Isn't that why cubicle walls exist in the first place?

@Arperum Oh, I just assumed the servers had their own rooms

@GraceNote There's only one office on the floor. Everybody else, managers and all, are in the cubicle farm.

2:10 PM
@GraceNote Probably

@Frank ...yowf

@Unionhawk I'm just going by relative percentage of things that can and/or want to kill you.

@Wipqozn Not when they are setting them up when they are going to move them to some client at some point.

@5pike It is. Like, it's a fantastic space. It's one of those "I look forward to coming into work in the morning, and I'd rather work in the office than at home" spaces. Which is why it doesn't make any sense they want to move us into cubeland.

@OrigamiRobot the vast majority of things leave divers alone, provided the divers leave them alone.

2:11 PM
I don't trust wild animals.

They've even said they don't get devs and how we work so...yeah, no sense. Zero sense.

@GraceNote Yeah. Like I said. Not sure if I like it. But I'll give it a shot.

They just know that whatever we do works. So...yeah.

You probably won't like it

@Wipqozn I fear the statement I made earlier is true...

2:12 PM
I can't remember if I've spoken about my history of workspaces.

@GraceNote I don't recall.

At this point, I am very confused about @Wipqozn's workspace situation.

@OrigamiRobot most fish and ocean related creatures are opportunists. If they figure out you're bigger than them, they'll look for an easier meal.

Alright. This will be all of the workspaces I worked at in my first workplace, before SE. Both as an intern for many years, and then my dreaded position as SharePoint consultant.

He seems to be upset about moving to cubicles, but is also in cubicles now?

2:13 PM
@GraceNote The only thing I know you in RL is A) You work at Stack Exchange B) At one point you had a boyfriend you went to a baseball game with C) Your full name

1 min ago, by Origami Robot
I don't trust wild animals.

Even now, I work in cubicle space, but IT has it's own walled off area, and our cubicle walls are quite high, so nice and private.

Being eaten isn't the only way to die in the ocean.

I first interned as basically a mini-sysadmin. I was the secondary IT person to an engineering consulting firm that otherwise only had one person in charge of everything IT related.

They also won't just attack.

2:14 PM
The office at the time was formerly a bank. In fact all of my workspaces throughout the majority of my internships were bank vaults. First the basement bank vault, later the 2nd floor bank vault.

@Unionhawk I'm more worried about being defended against.

Just don't touch the stingrays, eels, or really, anything and I promise you'll be fine.

@Wipqozn That is 2 things more than I know about @GraceNote

@GraceNote Vaults don't really make good places to build office workspaces, I don't think.

Also I refuse to believe @GraceNote has a full name.

2:15 PM
The basement bankvault doubled as a meeting room but that was used maybe twice in my time as an intern, since those were only summers and winters. Otherwise, it made for EXTREME solitude, and a huge workspace to scatter 4-5 laptops to work on at once.
@Frank They aren't like, vault-vaults - they're just large rooms (the 2nd floor one had shelves) that have gigantic bank vault doors that we're forbidden from closing.
Like, the basement one is basically like 1/3 the size of the first floor of my current house.
And I had it all to myself.

@GraceNote Large rooms do make for respectable workspaces, though. So long as it's still not being used as a vault at the time, anyways.

Who needs headphones when no one can hear your music when it's at high volume? ♪

@OrigamiRobot trust me, I'm a professional. I know my shit.

@Frank Yeah, only formerly a bank. We owned the space completely.
The room in front of the vault used the shelves to showcase all the logos and goods from companies we had done projects for, for example.

@Unionhawk I do trust you. It's the animals I don't trust.

2:18 PM
@John Her fullname is public knowledge. It was posted in the blog announcing she joined the SE Team.

The 2nd floor vault was smaller than the basement one, and there I actually had the main IT guy working in the same room. No walls or anything between us, just two employees sitting at a large table, working on several laptops.
In both cases it demands people walk long distances to bother us. Which didn't actually stop them or anything, but it did slow the frequency down.

@GraceNote Sounds like exactly the sort of space IT would excel in. Nice and quiet (or music loud, if you prefer), so people can just zone and do their thing.

@Wipqozn Oh, yeah. I guess I blocked that out because it broke character.

In my last year or so of internships, they annexed a new portion of the building for our use. Which we called the galley because quite frankly the architecture of that room really was like someone tried to build the deck of a ship inside of a building, minus the mast and such. But with that same, higher-on-each-end kind of structure.
Well, not just for our use - most of the electrical engineering team moved to the galley as well.

@GraceNote That sounds neat

2:22 PM
The main IT office was then moved... basically below deck, there was a series of rooms you had to go under to access, most of which we used for storage but also the main IT dude was stationed there. I myself was moved to one of the old offices that was formerly used by folks that then moved into the galley.

My son and I have been recently been enjoying Okami(wii) and Okamiden. He (10y) really enjoys the games and learning about the associated myth, religion and culture of Japan. He has even decided he wants to go to Japan for a holiday!

Can anyone suggest other similar games that both have educational components and are engaging/good games?

It doesn't have to be Japan and or myths- just fun.

PS he also learnt some geography and biology as a result of playing 'plague inc'.

@Stephen Portal 1&2 come to mind. Not quite educational like book-learning, but I hear that their kind of puzzling-solving is good for the brain. Also they're both really good games.

I learn from most any game so unfortunately I'm bad at giving that sort of recommendation.

@GraceNote I sorta wish I had an office.
With the amount I do, I sorta need an assistant, too.

@John This

2:24 PM
The company moved to an entirely new building when I was graduating for college, so I got to start my new gig as a SHAREPOINT CONSULTANT in the new office.

@GraceNote If I never have to touch Sharepoint again, it will be too soon.

Nothing else in my library fits that that I can think of...

@Stephen I'm assuming you already know about Minecraft?

@fredley glare

@GraceNote Honest question: what do you learn from shmups?

2:25 PM
@John How to dodge rain.

HamGlare @Powerlord

@John Hand-eye-coordination and reflexes.

@GraceNote I require a demonstration of this capability.

@John Also the Touhou series is a huge way to learn about Japanese mythology, in a roundabout sort of way.

@John How to play shmups?

2:25 PM
@John Anguish

@GraceNote That seems like it would take a while to master. Oh well, reason to practice :D
@5pike makes note
@fredley e.e
@GraceNote googles
@OrigamiRobot I take it you don't enjoy shmups.

@Stephen Anyway, as long as Portal has been mentioned I'll toss The Talos Principle out there. Although do be aware that it has some religious allegories to Christianity in it.

The new building has 5 floors. The first floor is basically just the entrance and the elevators to the rest of the building. The 2nd floor is the "entrance", where our front desk is as well as the admin cubicle farm. Off on the other half of the floor is the electrical engineering cubicle farm. The 3rd floor belongs to lawyers from another company, not our space. The 4th floor was all the architects and mech Es and other sorts. 5th floor was management offices.

@Powerlord Is Talos any good?
I had heard it was very philosophical

When I got hired as a SharePoint consultant they setup a cubicle across from the front desk for me.

2:27 PM
@John I do, I just wanted to make a funny comment.

I'm going to let that sink in for a bit.

@OrigamiRobot Oh, okay, carry on.

@John Most of the game is puzzle solving, but interacting with the Milton Library Assistant... does raise some philosophical questions.

@GraceNote You were...outside?

Q: In Rune Factory 4, how do I delete a save file?

MaddisonMy copy of Rune Factory 4 is pre-owned so has a save file on it which I want to delete. How do I do this?

@Frank No, still on the 2nd floor. Just, in this lone cubicle next to an empty cubicle located across from the front desk.

@GraceNote Can you draw a diagram?

The Milton Library Assistant being an AI you talk to via computer terminals.

@fredley I can!

@GraceNote -.-

2:29 PM
Although, and this is a potential spoiler, it became obvious fairly quickly in The Talos Principle that Elohim (which literally means God) the person giving you directions, is also an AI.
Granted, you can find this out in hub 1-B, which is the first hub after the introduction area.

This is very rough but basically gets you the picture.

Fuck past me for not commenting this code.
8

@GraceNote wow

Note that there are no walls that are not in the area marked 6.

As you near the edge of the playable area, you hear Elohim talking about how "In the beginning there was the word" and stuff like that... which restarts if you go aware from the edge and come back. If you go too far out, the game "rewinds" you back to the main area.

2:31 PM
And, well, the outer walls of the floor of course.
But basically everything on the right side is open space, and everything on the left side is open space, cube walls aside.

@Powerlord Ah, I see

(It's also pretty clear from the get-go that the entire thing is a computer simulation)

@Arperum Past you is the worst

@Powerlord Oh snap. That sounds really interesting.

Which means I got to listen to: the front desk picking up every phone call, everything happening on the admin side of things, every single person that enters the building.

2:33 PM
Some of you may remember the story about someone secretly putting a stuffed rabbit in my top hat one day. Well, I kept him and put him on top of my computer. This morning I walked in to this:

@Wipqozn Seriously, he might not have time at all, but this piece of code needs comments. Because I have to add some extra functionality to it now, and figuring it all out again is waste of time.

@Powerlord I now have to play this.

Q: Skyrim Dragons Running When Hurt?

Irma97Okay, I've gotten alright at fighting dragons from a hiding spot with a bow- but when I manage to get their health really low they fly off! Is this because I've maxed out my sneak and they can't find me? Or is it a bug? 'Cause normally creatures don't run when they get low on health- only people....

@MBraedley Sometimes it seems like the entire race of present people would be better off without those pesky "past" people.

2:35 PM
@OrigamiRobot that's pretty awesome

Past me had no idea how to code at all
What was he thinking?

@John It was on sale last week. It probably will be again sometime.

@fredley past you was made out of meat, how could he think at all?

After some number of months, I got a co-sufferer who got a second cube located next to mine, so great for our teamwork but still horrible for productivity. Eventually, though, they acquired a portion of the 3rd floor for us to use. Basically this pair of small rooms right at the end. Very unfurnished, but they had desks.

I still don't know who is doing this.

2:36 PM
@fredley He thought he was the best coder ever, and screw any who thought differently.

@Powerlord I saw, but that was still more money than I was willing to spend for how much I knew about it. I wonder if it'll hit <$10 anytime soon...

Oh, one more thing... the free block puzzle game Sigils of Elohim (on Steam, iOS, and Android) can give you codes to unlock certain things in The Talos Principle.

@KevinvanderVelden Not just any meat. Diamond meat.

Just minor stuff really.

@John no no, past him was meat, current him is diamond

2:36 PM
On the minus side, there was still construction work going on on the 3rd floor. On the plus side, we were basically as isolated from the rest of the company as humanly possible while still being in the same building, and that made the construction noises a pleasant experience compared to the front desk.

@fredley The best code in the world -> what I am writing right now. The worst code in the world -> what I wrote six months ago.
3

@GraceNote I like unfurnished rooms. It's soothing.

That was my workspace before I got hired by SE.

Although some of them are new QR codes you can post that people on your Steam friends list can see when they play the game.

@KevinvanderVelden Wait, didn't he used to be a porkchop?

2:37 PM
What the fuck was I thinking? Why would I do this nonsense in multiple queries? Leave that database alone past me!

@MBraedley He thought that he'd come back and fix those little hacks
How wrong he was

@John yes, meat meat. Now he is diamond meat

@Powerlord :O that is good to know

Now current me is having to clear them up
@GraceNote hired rescued

@GraceNote What about after?
I assume you probably work from next to the pool table, or something

2:38 PM
If I do decide to play through The Talos Principle again, I'll probably use the (free until early this week) Serious Sam pack to do it. It replaces Elohim's voice with the Serious Sam announcer and the player model with Serious Sam's model.

@John I slide down the banister from my bedroom, which deposits me into a private office with all my things in it.

Shooting trick shots between answering meta questions on life, the universe and everything
@GraceNote I...I want your office.

I don't actually do that because the only available railings are either adhered to a wall and stop short, thus ending in a floor crash, or end with a very large, very square piece that also would be a bad ending.
But the bit about the office entrance being right at the end of the stairs from my bedroom is truth.

@GraceNote Ow

@GraceNote You should remedy this.
