@Eugene because you're not swinging both one handed weapons at the same time, you alternate between the two
since the number is "damage per second", and you're only attacking every other <period of time>, the damage per second can work out lower

@kalina i cannot see how that news tells that you need another pc to make the steambox work

your assumption of higher dps would only be valid if you used both weapons at the same time

specifically a "windows" pc

So I should never sum dmg when using two weapons?

@Wandang speaking to you is painful
I can't believe that out of 100,000 sperm, you were the fastest

2:01 PM
lol

stop beeing personal

@kalina Now, now, calm down.

@Wandang stop not reading!

i read the article

You will only need another Windows PC if you want to stream Windows game over to your Steambox

2:02 PM
4 mins ago, by FEichinger
> You can play all your Windows and Mac games on your SteamOS machine, too. Just turn on your existing computer and run Steam as you always have - then your SteamOS machine can stream those games over your home network straight to your TV!
JUST THERE, it says it JUST THERE

@Wandang you don't need another PC to make it work, you need a Windows PC to play Windows games.

i blocked feichinger

Does that make sense?

well that's your loss
I didn't write the article, get off my back
@FEichinger provided you the answer, it's not our fault you have him on ignore

oh man thats your big conclusion games that do not run on linux natively need a windows background?
you can get wine on a steambox too

Q: Game trades. And downloads

user65944I have a friend who wants this game that I have but he can't afford and he told me to download it on the Xbox market and give him the disc. If I do that will the disc still be useable even though I've downloaded it?

gee, tell me something I don't know

Games don't run well on wine..

you go run all your games with wine, I will run mine via streaming
@3ventic some do
it's a bit hit or miss

11 mins ago, by kalina
behind pretty much every great game played on Steam OS will be a Windows PC crunching the numbers
that was pretty broad

It's just another piece of middleman software
slowing the process down

2:04 PM
if I had the option between stuff "just working" or messing around with emulators I know which option I will chose

@3ventic Really depends on the game. And you need to very carefully set it up exactly the right way to make it work.

@Wandang the broadness was negated with "pretty much"

linux all the way

@Wandang I ran linux as my desktop OS for a year, making music on it was painful

@kalina implying that games will not be for linux natively after valve wants a revolution on that part

2:05 PM
Once I came to the conclusion I was just running more than half of my applications via WINE, I just went back to Windows
@Wandang Valve wanting a revolution does not mean the entire industry will follow them
You're super naive if you believe that to be the case
Linux is still barely ready for the mainstream

i am just saying that pretty much every game is a claim that brought missunderstanding

And like it or not, your average gamer wouldn't have a clue how to set up Linux, let alone tweak WINE to run their stuff

because my games run natively

@kalina Not to mention that a "revolution" isn't exactly what the Linux world wants either.

and only a few need wine and have gold status
or platin

2:06 PM
WINE is not a solution, it's a workaround

Applications fare better under wine than games

@kalina if you really believe that steamos is too hard too

@Wandang SteamOS will come preinstalled on devices with a nice fullscreen UI

@kalina because there are OS that do explicitly that: making the user do nothing to configure
gameOS distributions

@kalina That's why those are just buying a preinstalled computer, like a Steam box thingy and won't ever notice if one game was made to run on Linux using Wine

2:07 PM
sure, all the other stuff will be there, behind the UI, but the users won't have to ever see it if they don't want to

@MadScientist Thing is, it's not all that easy to universally install a game through WINE without breaking something. In all likelihood it would barely work for a lot of people, and they'd be screaming for blood the moment they realize.

@MadScientist And one day, this might even mature enough to provide a "console like" experience

the solution is killing direct x and switching to opengl entirely

@Wandang This I can agree with

even apple does that

2:08 PM
especially since Direct X is so slow in comparison to other methods
Apple... Direct X... same conversation... brain on wall

@kalina afaik depends

@FEichinger I don't mean games installed under Wine, but the developer linking them against Wine to make them run on Linux. Setting up Wine is too finicky for mainstream, or at least it was a lottery whenever I tried it

@MadScientist not that hard tbh Oo

@MadScientist like @FEichinger, applications, even specialist applications, fare much better with WINE than games do
@Wandang most gamers would rather stuff "just work"
the vast majority of gamers are not computer enthusiasts
the ratios are a bit different if you say "PC Gamers"
but even then

@MadScientist Yeh, but you still can't do that on a Steam Machine. Properly, automatically installing wine on a random machine for a game that may or may not work ... Not an option for a Steam Machine, I'd wager.

2:10 PM
if they stay on their consoles its fine
call themselfs "gamer"
or play farmville

"gamer" != "computer enthusiast"

If I was running Linux now I'd probably just use virtualization for all Windows applications

o/

@MadScientist a complete vm ?

just because you're awesome at DOTA or CS does not mean you know how to reinstall or optimise your operating system for gaming

2:11 PM
@MadScientist I'm still happy with my dual-boot. Well, right now I'm not happy because efi is being a bitch, but still.

let alone edit config files without a GUI or understand error messages
the fact we get so many minecraft error messages as questions on Arqade proves that

@kalina hmm
lol well.. touche

Dec 27 '13 at 15:29, by FEichinger
@Lazers I have this weird feeling that almost every Minecraft question is either "Y U NO CONNECT?!", "REDSTUNE, DURR!" or "ALL TEH MODS ARE BREAKING!" ...

that is mojangs fault
error messages with javastacktrace really
but editing a config file is plain easy.
many can do and did that

A large portion of users can't fix any problem they encounter with a computer. Doesn't matter if it is Windows or Linux, if they would have to find a setting in a GUI or change something in a text file.

2:13 PM
@Wandang you'd be surprised

so many WoW player that played on pirated servers needed to change at least 1 line of config for the private server

Minecraft gives both text error and javastacktrace when it crashes.

@Wandang "so many", you're talking about tens or potentially hundreds of thousands out of a pool of a billion people
that isn't "so many"
that is "a minority"
if people were as good with computers are you're making out, "tech support" would not be a thing that exists

i would like to meet people who really are to dumb/lazy for that stuff ಠ_ಠ
i dont know any in real life

hanging around in a place like this can distort your views on these things quite easily

2:15 PM
@kalina there is a difference about a game crashing for no reason and me trying to customize a game

@Wandang take a look to AU ;)

@Wandang there is always a reason

or SU...

au ?

ask ubuntu

2:16 PM
ha!

btw, why the space before "?"?

"how do I make this game work"

:D what
do you really ask me that

"what does this error mean?"
"how can I install my graphics drivers?"

All lies, clearly, since people aren't that dumb in real life, apparently

2:17 PM
yep, Linux is ready for the mainstream

Let me guess, he's going to call people using Ubuntu to n00bs

@Braiam i dont know

If you are good with computers - you are the exception; not the rule.

Gamers are pampered today anyway, the young ones never had to create a boot disk with a custom config.sys and autoexec.bat to get that 600 kb free RAM that the game needed to start

@kalina the irony. my question about deleting of drivers

@MadScientist Heeheehee.

@Wandang It's not standard practice in English

@MadScientist true dat

@3ventic do I need 3dmark to compare?

I don't know

2:18 PM
@PrivatePansy i used that as my start linux
it has a great community

I just bought the program from sale because it was cheap.

i was a noob once too so that distri was good for that type of users. but it can do a lot more

well I'm not buying it so I can run it once

nowadays i prefer debian and or arch

@MadScientist nope, never had to do this

2:19 PM
even in ubuntu you need to blacklist false drivers
@kalina my first pc was a C64

I still managed to get RAGE to work on a fully AMD everything machine on release day though

i needed to do all kind of shit to get games to work

@Wandang when I was born, 486s were pretty standard hardware

a matter of fact: i needed to switch from ubuntu back to windows because of alsa sound driver problems
i tried a lot with custom configs based on measurements of my hardware but it would not work
i could just not speak in team speak and that was too major to stick to linux if you want to play competively
i wonder how many arqade user play competitively in tourneys and stuff

All of them. O.o

2:23 PM
@Unionhawk haha yeah ಠ_ಠ

... Dammit brain stop being dumb

On a completely different subject: I really like Sword Art Online. Finished it in one weekend, which is probably going to be a problem because I won't have anything to watch next week

err, the entire 12 volumes?
or 13... idk

The show, not the light novel series, which is where it came from I think

This week is agdq, so if you like charity and video games, that's something

2:26 PM
@kalina so would you suggest two-hand wepon with higher dps? talking about barbarian

@PrivatePansy if you like anime i would recommend elfenlied, death note or monster

@Wandang if he likes anime, he probably already watched those... at least Death Note is a must see

@Wandang note: elfenlied is very NSFW

@KevinvanderVelden who watch anime in the workplace?

well yeah but she is over 18?
@Braiam that

2:30 PM
@Braiam well jeah, but it's not something everyone likes to watch
There's fanservice and then there's elfenlied

O_O

@Braiam code geass comes to mind but i did not like it

It's just that it suffers from the same problem which all Japanese anime have, and doesn't quite quite bring out the full potential of its premise, I feel.

well, Elfen Lied has some gore... but, well, is Elfen Lied, no?

@KevinvanderVelden there is anime and then there is anime with nude woman. and we all know that naked woman are evil and masturbation makes blind

2:31 PM
Also, could be much longer. I mean, really, two years in eight episodes?

@Braiam also lots of bodylimbs removed and naked people, often at the same time

@PrivatePansy wait, what the heck are you talking about?

@PrivatePansy ಠ_ಠ

none of those has less than 20 episodes

@Braiam SAO, the first eight or so episodes spanned two years

2:32 PM
this is fanservice
is a Japanese light novel series written by Masaki Okayu and illustrated by Torishimo. It centers on a teenage boy and a killer angel from the future who constantly gets him into trouble and kills him violently and repeatedly with a spiked club, only to resurrect him seconds later. The novels were first serialized in the Dengeki hp magazine published by MediaWorks. Later, a manga version was created, written and illustrated by Mitsuna Ouse serialized in Dengeki Comic Gao!. Finally, an anime version was adapted and aired in Japan between March and September 2005. A second anime s...

well, if you read the LN, you will notice why... it was first a web novel with just some chapters

Maybe it's just me, but I would actually like to see more of the eponymous game universe

and there's some side stories to fill the gap

Q: RAGE, 0FPS, AMD HD6790, Performance Issue

neonoxdI recently installed rage on my PC, expecting to run smoothly after i played it on a less powerful pc having a decent FPS, BUT! Here comes the plot twist, because after I start a new game, (the pre-rendered cinematics running okay ofcourse) and get in the actual game, I literally get 0FPS, the g...

Q: What current or future games have capabilities for extending with scripting

4imbleI would like to know what games are out there that you can extend, improve or just customise to you liking with some coding. I'll give an example of an old game that provides exactly what i am asking for ... Neverwinter Nights had a tool kit that would allow you to make anything you liked. The g...

@Lazers LOL RAGE
@Lazers Too broad

2:36 PM
@kalina I had 386 and vikings, Dave, Lemmings
Those where the times

@Wandang I watched elfenlied, I kinda liked elfenlied, but it's premise is a subspecies of humans that reproduces by cutting of peoples limbs. It's twisted and definitely not to everyones liking.

@KevinvanderVelden well but it was fun :D elfenlied is a 9/10 on my list. death note 10/10
i did not like the 11.5 episode they produced to fill the gap

3d mark is busy owning my pc

meh, you both should read the manga, is more plot filled and also explain certain oddities...

Good morning, Bridge.
2

2:38 PM
@kalina You should probably close Chrome too

> -33°C
Feels like -43
IT IS COLD OUTSIDE!

@Braiam i read a few mangas but it is just not my thing :/ i started with dragon ball and naruto manga in german it was .... coughs blood

@PrivatePansy Shougeki no Kyojin or Steins;Gate are mines...

@PrivatePansy Log Horizon isn't bad. Not done yet, though.

@Braiam I've got Steins;Gate, but after watching a bit, it doesn't feel like it's going anywhere

2:40 PM
It's slower than SAO.

graphics card really lets me down

Accel World is written by the same author.

I get a higher physics score but a much lower graphics score and thus lower combined score

Steins;Gate wtf

My CPU really lets me down..
I'd play planetside 2 if my CPU was better

2:41 PM
oh no typo really Steins;Gate
because stein means stone in german

@PrivatePansy it picks up a little latter, I was almost dropping it

xD
you should watch dokuro chan it is one of the funniest i have seen

@3ventic intel cpus all the way
although I wish I had an amd chip right now for the room heating abilities it has
OH LOL
I still have burnout paradise running

and... there's the bomb...

@kalina That would explain that.

2:44 PM
5 Centimeters Per Second was really nice, if nothing else than to gawk at the pretty art

Okay, so I've just started watching UWSAASTWCATTT
And I'm not sure why...

@RedRiderX Uh, oh, yeah, that
Uh. I watched it too. I'm still not sure why I did that.

@RedRiderX I don't even know what that is.

Untitled Web Series About a Space Traveler Who Can Also Travel Through Time (UWSAASTWCATTT) is an ongoing adventure-sci-fi web series created by Travis Richey. The series is based on a fictional series first mentioned during the episode "Biology 101" of the NBC television series Community, named Inspector Spacetime. Inspector Spacetime is, by itself, a Doctor Who parody. Untitled Web Series follows The Inspector, a character that can travel through time and space by way of a red BOOTH (Bio Organic Omnidirectional Time Helix), a special space/timeship similar in some ways to the TARDIS. ...

Oh, a parody of Doctor Who.

2:45 PM
Yeah, it also has a bit of a checkered past.

It's like a really bad knockoff of a really bad knockoff of Doctor Who

yes

@Wandang err... german translations ain't that good jp -> en -> gb <- es

might be the best part
heh

If you're interested in some mecha-type stuff, Ars Nova is pretty good.

2:52 PM
BOREDOM SETS IN
I AM BORED

GOOD FOR YOU

NO

I'm now using a netbook to run an Ubuntu installed to a USB stick so I can turn another USB stick into a live USB for Ubuntu so I can install Ubuntu on my PC.
And why? Well, because efi is being a bitch.

that sentence looks wrong

what part? using a netbook or installing Ubuntu?

2:54 PM
Creative problems require creative solutions.

"an Ubuntu installed"

@kalina GO WATCH JAPANESE ANIME

sets fire to @PrivatePansy sets fire to @PrivatePansy sets fire to @PrivatePansy sets fire to @PrivatePansy sets fire to @PrivatePansy sets fire to @PrivatePansy sets fire to @PrivatePansy sets fire to @PrivatePansy
Is there any @PrivatePansy left?
If so, set fire to it

@kalina while (PrivatePansy.exist) setFireTo(PrivatePansy);

I was just typing that
-.-

2:55 PM
@Braiam i hate german translation i quickly switched to eng and stayed on eng . in animes i only watch original dub + eng sub

Take note @AshleyNunn, this is an instance where an infinite loop would be useful

it wouldn't be infinite

@Braiam back in my otaku years i was part of a sub group that released subs for rare anime^^

@kalina Unless the damage done by setFireTo is 0.

@Frank my fire does infinite damage

2:57 PM
@kalina Then why is more than a single application needed?
Clearly, you don't actually believe it does infinite damage.

@PrivatePansy that loop is so wrong... if the object PrivatePansy doesn't have the method exist the whole thing will trow exception

dramatic effect

Infinite damage does not kill an entity with infinite health.

How come everyone in Arrow can clear a 2 meter fence? >.>

PrivatePansy != null
would be better

2:58 PM
@Braiam s/method/property

@Wandang Hey, I clearly do exist, thank you very much

if privatepansy didn't have an exist property, it would fail to compile, and thus never be an issue
we're making the assumption that the property exists

@kalina assuming the language is statically typed

@kalina JavaScript is an interpreted language

@kalina why. maybe it is not a compiler but an interpreter?

2:59 PM
INB4 ALL OF U
