From the point at which they start, they get 4 opportunities to move at least 10 yards from where they started, and if they fail to do so within 4 attempts, other team gets the ball. Getting all the way across the field is a touchdown, usually worth 7 points when all is said and done. If they can't make it all the way up...

say team X and team Y face each other off. You say your payoffs are px:py. You get nx money fox X, ny for Y. X wins. You got nx + ny, you're paying px nx. To profit, you must have ny + (1 - px) nx > 0; px is almost invariably greater than 1, so we get to painlessly rewrite that as ny > px' nx. You want to maximize ny by getting py high and have px' as small as possible so that you don't lose too much on nx. To do so you need to predict who's X and who's Y ahead of time

You need to predict the actual winner, not what people believe it's going to be the winner.

Of course if you're too confident in your prediction and your py is too high and the prediction ends up to be wrong, you're not going to be happy, so you also need to have a measure of confidence in your prediction.

It's very much based on statistics and on how good of a model you can build.

Yes, I guess that px and py actually get updated in real time as nx and ny accumulate, but I'm honestly not sure how that works.

It could be that they fix nx px and ny py, for example, so that they always know what the payouts are going to be.

If nx px = ny py, then your profit function becomes nx + ny > ny py or py < (nx + ny)/ny. I'm too tired to make sense of that, but it seems dumb to me that in order to be profitable you have to set py (the payoffs you're not paying) low enough. I suppose the idea doesn't make sense to begin with; you have to pick sides. I blame Wolfram Alpha otherwise.
