If the attraction for upvotes isn't out of pity then people find it useful and so they give it their attention and so the whole thing about pity is pointless to think about.

I do not agree with @OrigamiRobot on this issue but I complete agree with him that "pity upvotes" are a thing that happen, though the reasoning behind them might not be "pity" so much as "revenge undownvoting"
