Q: Should World of Warcraft Questions Be Closed?

The Other JoelI think we should close World of Warcraft questions and direct them to Epic Advice. I would assume most WoW questions would have already been answered or would receive better responses at Epic Advice.

This is such a stupid proposal it's not worth having anywher. Voting makes sure it's hidden away, and you never see it.
Answers were also left.

Plus, the question itself advocates a particular answer.

So you're not voting to disagree, but to sort quality, like votes are intended to be sued for.

Ugh, I was hoping everyone would be done with this by the time I finished lunch.

btw

@Wipqozn I'm gonna start suing votes now.

5:01 PM
@OrigamiRobot We're talking about other dumb stuff now

@FEichinger ...I could edit that, but I'll live with my shame.

@OrigamiRobot I haven't started lunch yet, this is a tragedy :(

Revision history of the editable part of the FAQ: part one and two

@Sterno Oh thank goodness.

@Wipqozn This doesn't conflict with the guidance. We said not to downvote for disagreement, so if you're downvoting because of normal reasons to downvote, that seems appropriate?

5:01 PM
@Wipqozn Good.

For what it's worth, the part about lore is added in revision 6 of part 1 by Grace, Apr 20 '11 at 12:42

@GraceNote Yes, but that's not what @FEichinger said.
6 mins ago, by FEichinger
Also, folks, don't forget, we're actually not supposed to downvote meta Qs that aren't tagged anymore!

@OrigamiRobot Okay I guess we're still talking about it a little.

@Wipqozn Hyperbole.

@GraceNote He misrepresented the post. He's a criminal.

5:02 PM
@GraceNote I for one missed that memo

> Our doorknob was stolen at a party we threw last weekend, today it shows back up with this note.
lol

@Wipqozn Question votes sort more by popularity than quality, unfortunately.

@MichaelDunfield hahaha

@badp Voting on metas was never different to begin with and people should have stopped tricking themselves into believing so a long time ago. :P

@TimStone that is lies, damned lies and statistics

5:04 PM
If your post makes me want to bang my head against the wall, it's a bad question regardless of whether or not it's a meta topic.

@TimStone Yes it is. It's more honest because it doesn't cost anyone rep.

@Sterno I am trying as hard as I can to ignore all of you!

@TimStone does it count if banning lore questions makes me want to bang my head against the wall? ._.
2

@Sterno Well, right, there is that on per-site metas.

@Sterno Exactly. When I'm on meta I don't downvote a post just because I hate the user and want them to lose rep, I only vote based on their post quality.
Sort of like how I downvote all of @Fluttershy's post on the main site, but don't do so on MEta.
Damn @Fluttershy, thinking he's better than everyone just because he has wings.

5:05 PM
@Wipqozn Or because you hate a user and want to see them cry. As it should be.

@Sterno Well shit, good point!

make cry

I'll just downvote users I hate everywhere now.

@badp Yes. If someone hasn't provided a convincing enough case that you can't even begin to understand where they're coming from, then you're either pure evil or they didn't think about it enough to account for your skepticism, which is their burden in posting a useful question.

@GraceNote Yep. My point was more about the "telling people how to vote" part rather than the actual "only feature requests deserve downvotes" part (which, to me, was how that meta read at first, though).

5:06 PM
@badp I, too, think we should keep lore questions.

If I want to downvote something just for the sake of it, I go to SciFi
8

@Wipqozn me three

@FEichinger I know.

@OrigamiRobot Man, we haven't hated in SciFi in at least a week.

@TimStone oooh! oooh! I pick evil!

5:07 PM
I was thinking about hating on Movies & TV earlier, but took the higher road.

@GraceNote Just clarifying it before I get branded a filthy misleading criminal for the next hour. :P

Now I'm on the middle road, I guess.

@OrigamiRobot I'm not sure if completely self-apparent and logical reasons count as "for the sake of it"

@FEichinger That was Wipqozn. You can usually disregard anything he says.
3

@TimStone "spite" would have been more appropriate.

5:08 PM
@FEichinger I heard you're a filthy criminal. Care to comment?

@GraceNote That was rather harsh. It's not that bad ... It's kinda bad.

Don't bother, you'd just lie anyway!

@GraceNote This is a case where I really am to blame.

@Sterno The best part about mod abuse is collecting the sweet, sweet tears of the commoners to water my seeds of evil.

@TimStone Which site would be the best fit for "Q: Where do seeds of evil come from?"

5:09 PM
@Sterno A: Turok

@OrigamiRobot So it's a gaming lore question!

I always star things about me that get a star just so people know I wasn't the one who starred it.

@Sterno SFF, because I guarantee you there is a book with seeds of evil in it

May 17 '12 at 15:01, by badp
Guys I suggest a hour-long ban for @Wipqozn, everybody agree?

@Wipqozn How would we know that?

5:09 PM
May 17 '12 at 15:01, by Grace Note
Disagree, he can't say stupid things if he's banned.

@Sterno No, it's an ITG
Turok 2: Seeds of Evil is a first-person shooter video game originally released for the Nintendo 64 in late 1998. A port was released for Windows OS shortly afterwards, in 1999. It is the sequel to the successful ' and was followed by the 2000 entry in the series, Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion. It was the first Nintendo 64 game to allow use with the RAM Expansion Pak. The game was well received, garnering an 89% from the review collator Game Rankings for the Nintendo 64 version and labeled as a "must-buy" from GameSpot. However, the Microsoft Windows and Game Boy Color versions did not sco...

I forgot all about the RAM Expansion Pak

@OrigamiRobot No, it's a "what were the developers thinking?" question

It's the sequel to the successful apostrophe. That sounds exciting.

@Sterno Magic.

5:10 PM
And their criminal misspelling of "pack".

@SaintWacko Hey, i remember enjoying watching my friend play this.

@OrigamiRobot No, I don't mean like that. I mean "how did they think of the name/game?"

In fact apparently I've said "stupid" and "Wipqozn" in almost the same number of times in this room.

@GraceNote Correlation does not imply causation, but...

@GraceNote I read "In fun fact"

5:12 PM
@GraceNote How many instances of both?

I think I'll starts saying that.

Q: How to make screenshots in GTA V

Imagine digitalI would like to take screenshots in GTA V on my ps3, but it's not possible from the XMB bar. now I looked around on the internet and I see a lot of people talking about a capture card, but these are for video recording right? is there any way that I can take screenshots (no video's!) from GTA V?...

Q: What is the easiest way to exchange cars between characters in GTA V?

Chris AppleseedI'm wondering what is the easiest way to give a car from one character to another (perhaps on the opposite side of the map). The garages can only be accessed from the owner and cars left without a character nearby may disappear. I remember reading something related to parking lots and car storage...

@GraceNote I'm special.

@FEichinger I apparently have almost the sum of them together if I search on an OR. Shy about 15% or so.

My word. Of the 212 times the word "Handsome" has been used in The Bridge, I've used it 114 times.

5:14 PM
@GraceNote Not sure if that's sad or hilarious.
@Wipqozn 213 and 115 now, I assume?

@FEichinger Yes.

My handsome new goal is to handsomely throw off @Wipqozn's handsome count.
Also, you probably counted lines of text rather than incidents of words, you filthy beggar.

... Shit.

@Sterno I'm not counting every use of the word. I'm too handsome to do that.
@FEichinger Well, it is pre- NO! Not going to go there.

@Wipqozn Good call.

5:16 PM
@FEichinger hrm... I know it's the basis of an innocent mistake and the nature of the word is why it's standout, but... hrm...

I really wish tomorrow would hurry up and be today, because then I'd be getting Sushi in a couple hours.

@GraceNote "filthy" in the next line didn't make it any better.

@Wipqozn I'm tempted to get sushi in a couple of hours now just to taunt you.
Actually I was tempted to get sushi anyway, but...added bonus.

@TimStone That's not fair! I'd never taunt you guys about getting Sushi.
Never ever.
Just not within my character.

@Wipqozn Technically, you're always taunting me when you mention sushi, since I'm stuck in a land locked province and you have a nice ocean right beside you. :(

5:20 PM
@JasonBerkan Very true.

In other news, I wonder if @fredley has seen the submitter on today's What If ...

...would you be terribly offended if I were to remove that line?

@GraceNote NOt sure what you're talking about, or to who, but yes, I would. I would take it as a personal insult.
wait, I was
Fudge crackers.

@GraceNote Not really, no. I don't think it's really necessary.

Just the word kinda is one of those that kinda puts me on edge of sorts, one of a few words I'm much nergh about.

5:26 PM
@Wipqozn You never taunt me with Sushi.

@GraceNote Not gonna stop you. Just saying that I don't see it necessary. There's a big problem with who considers what words offensive but I've long given up trying to argue about it.

@FEichinger There is a bit of a problem, yeah, and part of it is that we've got kind of an irregular sinusoidal standard in here so it's not really possible to know how anything will be accepted at any time.
I admit I'm over-hard on this word but that's more of a personal thing, which is why I asked. All the same, it's... hrm.

TIL: "sinusoidal" is a word @GraceNote didn't just invent.

You didn't come across that word in physics class?

I had, I think, three years total of physics.
And in German, too.

5:31 PM
@PrivatePansy I don't think I did, either, to wit.

Heard it in math, though.

So far still only at 2 pages for my answer.

@GraceNote Not even worth posting unless you get to 10.

@FEichinger sinusoidal is a cool word

@BenBrocka It certainly is. But it would also be if @GraceNote just invented it.

@FEichinger I use it all the time.
AC is sinusoidal

6:04 PM
Drama in the bridge is also sinusoidal

I generated my own drama today. I deserve a badge.

I love facebook ads asking "are you a hardcore gamer?" and then advertising a facebook social game to me

@BenBrocka Well it's not that far off
@Sterno No, you just cheated the system.

@FEichinger that poor Portable slice

@FEichinger Arguing with you about whether or not I cheated the system is just bonus drama. You're making me win even more!

6:09 PM
@Sterno I'm not arguing.

@FEichinger Yes you are!

@FEichinger Yes you are

@Sterno No, I'm not!

This isn't an argument, it's simple contradiciton!

6:11 PM
That reminds me, I haven't used the insult "malodorous pervert" enough lately.

I figured it was on your business cards

zing!

Q: How do figures work?

BrysonicThe Card Hunter launch special includes, among other things, 9 extra figures. Is it possible to switch your characters' figures after they've been recruited? Or will I have to recruit a new character to use one of the new figures?

Where do you go for gaming news?
I liked 1up, which has been discontinued.

And I think it has multiplayer
Oh
And there was just a question about it

6:19 PM
@SaintWacko a few of them, not just one

@ken.ganong I like Polygon but I mostly just see what Zite's dredged up for me in the morning (it's like an automatic RSS feeder but it can find gaming stories)

@3ventic Yeah, but I just noticed after I posted that that a question had just been asked

I love seeing that Nu avatar

@BenBrocka haven't tried Polygon
kotaku seems to set its bar for news way too low. Although I tend to like the site design.

Kotaku is very inconsistent in quality
Polygon is decent, though I don't like their reviews (neat layouts for reviews, not actually good reviews IMO)

6:25 PM
RPS

Jin
i don't get speed-warp.net

Quick, ask questions on the site about it.

@Jin did you play Candy Box?

Do it while fredley's not around and we can all reap the reputation that would rightfully be his otherwise!

I used to use Kotaku, but that stopped being interesting and now I pretty much drift to wherever someone in here links.

6:30 PM
Devs answering questions is cheating!

Jin
@OrigamiRobot so you just blindly click on the links here I see...

It's like Eric Lippert answering C#, how will anyone else get rep

@Jin it's an arqade machine with minor character progression

Devs answering questions is awesome!

Jin
@kalina tl;dp

6:32 PM
that was an accidental typo as well

@ken.ganong Rock Paper Shotgun for PC gaming news. I-don't-know-because-I-don't-care for console gaming news

I go here and the other corner of the internet for gaming news.

This game (Halfway) looks amazing.

Why bother looking at news sites when most information just falls in my lap?

6:34 PM
@GraceNote That's what I'm saying.
People here will show me the latest gaming news whether I care about it or not.

That's weird.

This guy needs to stop posting his speedtests
>.>

I should do one of them before I leave for uni so I can compare.

Isn't Detroit supposed to be like... terrible? And bankrupt? Why do they have better internets than me?

@Fluttershy He's the only guy in Detroit with the internet, so he gets a whole towns worth.

6:41 PM
@Fluttershy It's internet from the University of Southern Michigan, or whatever
Hardwired, as close to the source as he could get, apparently

Temple 8 is done. Now onto Onox.

@Wipqozn Ages > Seasons

@OrigamiRobot I agree, which is why I completed Ages first.

@OrigamiRobot I like the items in Seasons more but I like Ages more overall.

@Wipqozn I thought you just hacked in the Ages part.

6:43 PM
@GraceNote Would a succinct version of your answer be "Downvote the crap and let God sort it out?", where God = Automated Process?

I like the rocs cape from seasons, but I prefer the Seed shooter from ages.

Not hacked as in modifying

The more succinct version is more badp's last bullet point - stupid questions are the problem.

@GraceNote And stupid questions still get highly upvoted.
And everyone cries, "But lore questions are on-topic!"

6:45 PM
What's the big deal, though?
I mean, the Harbinger one isn't great, but it's not like a pox on the face of the Internet.

@OrigamiRobot And if the problem isn't with it being a lore question, then their argument falls flat.

@GraceNote the thing is, the bulk of these stupid questions fall into one of our other off topic reasons anyway

@Sterno Because if the solution is to cull out the bad questions, this doesn't do that.

@OrigamiRobot Well, it sounds like what I thought Grace was saying wasn't what Grace was saying.

like asking for speculative answers that do not have an answer in the game world

user15026
6:46 PM
I really don't think a blanket ban is a good idea.

@GraceNote And yet that's the part that gets focused on and the questions remain open.

@AshleyNunn Nor I, therefore the discussion is over.
Wipqozn has spoken.

@OrigamiRobot I'm aware, and I don't think it's healthy for either side to look at that direction.

@AshleyNunn You are not in the minority!

@GraceNote So your solution is good on paper, but it is not practiced.
Nor will it be.

6:47 PM
I didn't give a solution, really.

You know what we really need? A "Your question is stupid. We're closing it and you should feel bad about yourself." close reason.

It will just lead to close/reopen wars.

user15026
@sterno Yay! Like I get they are sometimes awful but the awful isn't just because they are lore. We get shit questions in a whole variety of ways.

user15026
I think lore is bad is just a lot of confirmation bias.

6:48 PM
I explained why I don't think banning lore is at all useful to us, neither as a site nor as to solving this particular problem (though I guess the latter is more implied than spoken), and provided a sample direction we can look at.

@Sterno There's a custom close reason.

Q: Is it possible to save the Crime Net public server filter settings?

kalinaEach time you enter Crime Net, the public server filters are always returned back to their default values - showing games of any difficulty, contract, etc. Is it possible to save the public server filters settings rather than having to set them individually each time you enter Crime Net?

@Wipqozn But if we do it my way, it's the only close reason we'll ever need.
Well, maybe that and "dupe"

Which is less "downvote stuff and commenting and creating a stir that creates stupid amounts of attention" and more "let detritus just gather dust and go away when the cleaning system kicks in".

@Blem Saw that before, pretty fancy.

6:50 PM
@GraceNote What are the criteria for the cleaning system?

user15026
I think we need to stop looking for large categories of things to attack.

I have just acquired 750 bottles of Greyfields 1879.
I am unsure of my reasoning behind this acquisition.

user15026
@redriderx that is quite the haul! How did you manage that?

@AshleyNunn To be fair, I don't think anyone cared enough to make the meta happen except me, who doesn't want them banned. I just didn't want other issues surrounding them shut down with responses of "Just ban them all".

@Sterno We wouldn't need dupe. The question is stupid because the asker should have just looked at the other question.

6:52 PM
@Wipqozn Good call.

@OrigamiRobot I linked to it. The key criteria is simply lack-of-attention, which if it's really worthless, then not giving it our attention to get countered would then leave only natural traffic, which will either result in it languishing and dying or getting solved.

user15026
@sterno that makes perfect sense to me.

@AshleyNunn or, alternately, I didn't want to waste time discussing issues surrounding them if the community will was to just ban them all anyway

@AshleyNunn A bulk order from Mr. Wines. Apparently the Masters have a soft spot for Romantic Notions.

> has −1 or lower score

6:53 PM
@OrigamiRobot I'm not sure where you find that when it says "0 or lower score, or 1 or lower if the author is deleted".

That's all the attention it needs for people to swarm in and pity upvote because "LORE QUESTIONS ARE ON-TOPIC"

So... I've just bought an entire wine cellar... Now what?

user15026
I mean I know I have been vocal in the future as over stuff like this but really it is getting to the point where people seem to just want to close everything that might be remotely possibly terrible without considering individual cases.

Oh, skip, Jeff's answer. Only look at the question.

6:54 PM
wow some suckers got HL2 on CD

@OrigamiRobot Oh for heaven's sake, stop the pity upvotes whining.

Or just look at the later part of Jeff's answer, nevermind, it did get updated.

Q: Is there a way to save an outfit in GTA 5?

kevlar1818This really has been grinding my gears... If you make an outfit for a character, it says your current outfit is updated. Sure, it is, but can you save this outfit as one of your (14?) base outfits, perhaps overriding it? That way I could (obviously) save my outfits for later, but also the charac...

user15026
@redriderx I think there are some people in Veilgarden and the like who will trade secrets and gossip for your wine.

@FEichinger They are directly defeating the proposed solution here.

6:56 PM
@OrigamiRobot If downvotes attract pity upvotes, then don't downvote and let it sit at neutrality and still get cleaned up.

user15026
@origami I don't think it is the horrible omgomgomg widespread plague like you present it as.

@GraceNote But it won't site at neutrality. That's the problem.

@OrigamiRobot You're assuming that you know why people vote. I'd go as far as to say that you're expecting people to go out of their way just to keep questions because you don't like them.

@OrigamiRobot If it's truly uninteresting and the only attraction for pity is because it gets downvoted, then losing that attention means we're left with uninteresting.

user15026
If nothing else, "pity up votes" is a hard thing to define or prove.

6:57 PM
Are people still arguing about lore questions?

If the attraction for upvotes isn't out of pity then people find it useful and so they give it their attention and so the whole thing about pity is pointless to think about.

I do not agree with @OrigamiRobot on this issue but I complete agree with him that "pity upvotes" are a thing that happen, though the reasoning behind them might not be "pity" so much as "revenge undownvoting"
"Your downvote was dumb. Let me fix that."

I'm not saying that every lore question will be pity upvoted if we don't downvote it.

@Sterno And the argument about pity upvotes is essentially "Your upvote was dumb."
Great, fixes everything. Let's just scrap the voting system altogether and hand out hand-made golden stars by letter.

I mean, pity upvotes are pretty easy to prove. Often, people specifically leave comments about them.
