5:00 PM
@badp There is no such thing as a counter argument to a pointless debate :P

@James to the android hell with you

@badp I use an iPhone/iPad thanks :)

@James THAT IS NOT WHAT I MEANT BY ANDROID

@badp I reject your reality and substitute my own :D
.. Ok why does it keep sending me to the list of rooms?

It's the counter argument to a pointless debate.

5:03 PM
Stop doing weird things bridge!!!
On the plus side, Super Dungeon Explore and Mage Wars are slated to be delivered tomorrow :D

@James In case you haven't worked it out, @badp is kicking you.

I only did so twice

@RonanForman Ah, and that is what a 4yr old does when losing a debate :P

The grownup approach is to make a claim and run when presented with facts

@agent86 Sorry :P

5:07 PM
@badp Sorry man, I simply do not care about linux vs windows on any level.. but at least I cared enough to respond somewhat where as everyone else found your debate so invigorating that they said absolutely nothing.

but... I care because I like both :<

.. .Except for @agent86 I guess who tried to stoke a cold fire into a flame war :)

and they both suck in their own way
also I don't expect a room full of gamers to care about Powershell and wget

@badp I accept that linux makes my NAS box and my TV... and my oven .. run. And I accept that I use windows for general computer usage :)

@James I'm not selling anything here man

5:09 PM
@badp Just lamenting?

I'm just saying Powershell sucks after you said Powershell rocks.

@badp Powershell is the only way to get some things done in Sharepoint.

which sucks because I wanted Powershell to not suck
@fbueckert That's orthogonal
(aka irrelevant)

Compared to the Sharepoint UI to do some stuff, Powershell positively rocks.
Yeah, orthogonal. I know.
I'm just pointing out that sometimes, it's the only option available.

@fbueckert Yeah, well, any UI sucks when doing repetitive tasks more than 10 times

5:11 PM
So
On an unrelated note, who else got the Castle Story prototype last night???
Wow.. would have thought someone in here besides me backed that project

user15026
OMG yay got accepted to the TEDx event my University is holding!

@AshleyNunn Gratz! :)

user15026
@James thanks!

@James and failed :(

@James I got it.

5:18 PM
@AshleyNunn Do you know what the topic(s) is/are going to be about?

@AshleyNunn are you going to speak, or are you just there to listen?

@agent86 We all have our off days :D
... and why is there a in the channel's description?

user15026
@agent86 I am there to listen. :)

user15026
@James A few - they are releasing the speaker list slowly between now and the event date

@AshleyNunn Ah :)

user15026
5:20 PM
@James There are some pretty cool people speaking. I am excited already!

@James You can pick up the story sometime yesterday.

yesterday, by Mark Trapp
@GnomeSlice dude you've been doing that for the last 3 hours, you have the memory of a goldfish
^^ Priceless :D

Q: I've lost my castle, how do I find where I built it?

fredleyAfter generating a new creative world (large biomes) I went around looking for an extreme hills biome. I did this by tping randomly in x and z directions in multiples of 10,000 (or possibly 100,000). My problem is, I died, and hadn't reset spawn. I've opened my map in Minutor, but couldn't find...

Q: Minecraft related Visio Shapes

NeberuThinking about ways to diagram redstone circuits and buildcraft machine/piping layouts I instantly thought of Microsoft Visio. However after extensive searching I haven't found any stencil sets that have been made for / fit minecraft well. So my question is has anyone ever found any MS Visio sten...

@James Yes that was a high point in the conversation. :)

room topic changed to The Bridge: General Chat Room for Arqade.com. The main quarters of Arqade's SEI AskQuestion Mothership, wherein we aim our LAZERS and LASERS at arqade cabinets and fancy new spaceship logos. [jin-fanclub] [lazers] [whirrrr-pchoooooooo]

user15026
@James hugs that kitty forever and ever

6DOF space game. At least check out the demo.

@AshleyNunn Hehe, Epic Level of Cuteness achieved :D

user15026
5:43 PM
@James The cute is killing me

@GnomeSlice I did, then felt seasick from my incompetence and quit.
Still an interesting game though.
@RedRiderX Or maybe that's airsick...

@RedRiderX spacesick

@SaintWacko Spacesick, of course, thank you.

Q: What are the benefits of venturing into the Nether?

RetrosaurMy friend is new to Minecraft, and though he has understood the basics of gameplay, he still doesn't understand the point of the nether. In simple terms, how can I describe the benefits of the nether?

6:01 PM
I just spent my whole lunch hour watching robot chicken episodes. I REGRET NOTHING

user15026
@agent86 That sounds like a great way to spend a lunch hour

6:13 PM
wat
New Free to Play - Dwarfs!?: #SteamNewRelease http://bit.ly/WsYExv
I mean, I enjoyed the pre-release demo, but...
This doesn't... make... sense?

user15026
@badp Why not?

Oh, okay. I just saw the DLC list
@agent86 It's a demo and then you "buy" the extra features you want

user15026
@badp Yeah, pretty much

like "difficulty levels above Easy or Normal"

I think I bought that!?

6:15 PM
@agent86 Yeah, exactly. You bought that

@badp now it's free to play!?
eh, it wasn't that great,.

It's like buying office for $0
and then you have a bunch of DLC
@Wipqozn "Save button - $5.99"
"Bold - $.99"
"Italic - $1.99"
"Powerpoint: font sizes smaller than 18 - $1,999.99"

o.O So pay $10 for Dwarfs!? Ooor get the free version, buy all the DLC for $8... Am I missing something!?

@James You can buy it for $8 or be nickel and dimed for $10

@badp Other way around man.. Its $10 to buy it or nickel and dimed for $8

6:21 PM
(well, €8.99 and €10.45 respectively)

@badp Until they release new "DLC" patches. Like a save button. THen you need to buy that too!

@James I guess pricing makes 0 sense in your region then, because it does here

@badp Oh, LOL There was 2 more hidden DLCs I did not add. Ok I was missing something :D
Anywho, I already own that original game

@James you own it too!?

I'm so happy I get to reply to new messages with messages I've already written. It saves up so many quote pyramids.

6:25 PM
I can't remember why I bought it!?

@agent86 because you like your interrobangs!?

@badp maybe!?

and the game is called "Dwarfs!?"

@agent86 Its actually a fun little game

it was probably for some stupid holiday achievement thing, or it came in a bundle or something.

6:26 PM
@agent86 I think it was on a holiday sale for like $3 :D

@James $3!?

@agent86 I remember picking it up very cheaply

I'm just looking for reasons to interrobang things.
I'm not really surprised.

user15026
@agent86 Oh, now I am disappointed.

6:29 PM
@AshleyNunn you're disappointed!? have an interrobang!

Agent, you have failed us for the last time?!

tune in next week to find out! SAME AGENT TIME, SAME AGENT CHANNEL!?

user15026
@agent86 HURRAY?!

I FINALLY GOT IT
CTRL-SHIFT
is the thing that has been fucking changing my keyboard layout behind my back for so many months
Ctrl-fucking-Shift

@badp Neat site :)

6:30 PM
Now to disable this fucker

@badp that's... an interesting combination of keys.
typically I try to keep my pants zipped when using a keyboard shortcut

@agent86 You do‽

user15026
@badp Yeah, that one gets me a lot.

user15026
@agent86 I find I hit it a lot by resting my left hand on the edge of the keyboard

@badp If I had heard you complaining about that I could have told you that was the problem.

6:34 PM
@AshleyNunn I think for a while I had one that was ctrl-shift-left arrow, which I occasionally hit when trying to select a block of text

user15026
@agent86 That would be a pain.

user15026
I should really uninstall the french layouts I have on here - its not like I am going to use them ever.

@badp: Assuming you don't want multiple layouts you can disable all the alternate ones by going to the language settings. You should be able to disable the shortcut key as well.

I had it especially when using LyX, when Ctrl-Shift-M is a very common combination
@Wipqozn The guys behind Windows thought this was a really good keyboard combination too, given just how deeply nested the off switch is
The whole dialogue where "Change Key Sequence" fails to report the existence of Ctrl-Shift at all

user15026
@badp O.o

6:36 PM
@badp The guys are windows think everything they do is genius.That's part of the reason windows is terrible. Let the user decide what's best for them. Don't force decisions on them and then hide the options to change these things within heavily buried menus.

@Wipqozn That's the issue I have with Apple

@Wipqozn Actually this is kind of a first for me on Windows. What you describe is more like what I'd expect from Apple

@SaintWacko I've heard they are even worse. I've never used Apple products aside from a few times they've used them at school.

@badp The option to turn off the freaking keyboard layout option on your start bar in Windows XP was buried, too.

@Wipqozn Oh, they're far worse

6:37 PM
"We figured this shit out for you guys. If you think it's stupid, Think Differentâ„¢. We're right and you're wrong. Fuck you."

It was murder to find it.

I refuse to use an OS in my personal life that requires me to compile the kernel.

@Sterno So no BSD for you?

Actually, who am I kidding? I really don't care. I just want my PC games to work.

or whatever that non-Linux thing is called, my memory fails me

6:39 PM
@Sterno 2004 called, they want their gentoo hate back :P

Therefore, Windows = win

@Sterno Yeah, same here. I wish I could use Linux for everything, but I have to use Windows to play games

@Sterno I have a lot of faith in the work Wolfire and Valve are doing actually :P
(Wolfire is the company behind the Humble Indie Bundle, they're the one who're actually porting to Linux many of the games put on sale)

user15026
I don't like complicated things, and Linux seems to be above my level

@AshleyNunn That might've been true in 1999 :)

6:41 PM
@AshleyNunn make no mistake, you're going to have to work to use linux.

someday though, you might enjoy the work :)

Most Linux distros have a desktop. The desktop have icons on it. They also have some kind of taskbar. The taskbar has a way to launch other programs. In either way you can launch Firefox (or Chrome).

user15026
@agent86 Yeah, that's what I figured. I have enough issues with my tech as it is, right now I am not in a place where that is something I want to do.

@badp I tried to use Linux a couple years ago.
I spent more time Googling how to do something Windows does natively than I did anything else.

6:43 PM
I think even the minor user interface changes throw some people

So long as you keep yourself to the desktop the only difference is that 1. some software isn't available and some other is and 2. your drivers may not be supported

It's not too bad. Just work with a linux server in pure console for years and you'll be borderline average at it

After two days, I said screw it and installed Windows.

@tiddy what he said.

@fbueckert Do you remember any item? I'm struggling coming up with any

6:43 PM
@badp File sharing.

Afternoon all :)

user15026
@badp Yeah, the moment anything like that happens, I am done.

@fbueckert Hah, as if that ever worked out of the box with Windows either.
You're funny.

Apparently I'm not a man unless I use Emacs, too.

man, @badp is in a mood for flaming today.

6:44 PM
@badp Minor configuration, yes.

user15026
@badp It works quite well with the homegroup setup.

Having to download and install a separate package to just integrate with my network, though, no.

@fbueckert Yeah, it turns out there's minor configurations required in Linux too. Yeah, in some version of ubuntu it wasn't on a package that was installed by default. Been there done that
@AshleyNunn That is true, although homegroups only tend to work for short durations of time. Maybe because I had to reinstall Win8 so many times this year

@badp Preventing the display configuration file from deleting itself

I'm willing to spend time to set stuff up properly. But when I spend time Googling, "How to set up file sharing?" and the answer I get is, "Download a package and install it", without instructions, or links, I say screw it.

user15026
6:46 PM
@badp It seems to work fine with my Win7 setup.

@OrigamiRobot torvalds_giving_nvidia_the_finger.jpg
@AshleyNunn As I said "that is true."

@badp It was ATI. :P

@OrigamiRobot That's even worse!

it's OK @badp. 2013 is the year of the linux desktop! I'm sure of it this time.

user15026
@badp I know, I am responding to the second bit of your statement

6:47 PM
@fbueckert Samba isn't too hard to configure and is typically included in most distros

Our mods are delusional.

@agent86 har har har :P

What does that say about us, who voted them in?

I use it to run my home network file server

@tiddy Hasn't been in Ubuntu for a few versions
dunno if it's in 12.04 or 12.10

6:47 PM
@tiddy It wasn't on whatever distro I had.

user15026
@fbueckert We were lied to XD

And linux "help" forums are singularly not.

Oh, sudo apt-get install samba smbfs

@tiddy that's @fbueckert's whole point.

;)

6:48 PM
The simplest way to get what you need is to just post, "Linux can't do <X>!"
Then you get flamed with, "Yes it can! Here's how!"

@fbueckert We've all seen that xkcd, yes :P

Linux can't get me a girlfriend.

(it was an xkcd, right?)

@badp I haven't the foggiest.

6:49 PM
Well to be fair I'm sure we've all spent hours in windows trying to get something to work as well

I know because that's what I did.
@tiddy Windows users don't have a hazing culture like Linux does.

user15026
@fbueckert This is really what gets me

Everyone's of the opinion that it was tough for them to learn, so the newbies need to get roasted.

I agree that there doesn't seem to be a really good win -> linux guide

@fbueckert what I really see is "man I'm so good at Windows and people struggle with it all the time. I tried Linux and it was different and I struggled a bit, go figure how much of a struggle it'll be for common people!"
which is not necessarily a measure of how hard Linux distros really are as much as how hard they are once you come from a Windows background

6:51 PM
@badp I'm fair to middling at Windows. I tried Linux. It's unfriendly, even to technical people.

The trouble I initially dealt with besides the obvious syntax hurdles was that when working in straight console there isn't the abstraction we're used to in GUI and Windows specifically

for a better example of something "simple" that's hostile by design to Windows users try Mac OS X, where none of your computer muscle memory can help.

@fbueckert You get used to it pretty fast, though

@badp Yeah, but about 70% of users come from a Windows background

@SaintWacko Spent two days. Too much trouble. Punted it.

user15026
6:52 PM
@fbueckert Yeah, and I am not even technical, so I am totally hosed

@fbueckert Well, two days is a little short for learning anything new :P
I used Fedora almost exclusively on my old computer

@SaintWacko I spent two days trying to get the damn filesharing working.

@Sterno Somehow however OS X gets a free pass, even when every single mouse gesture, key combination or convention is different

Googling where to get a package didn't work.
Googling error messages that I got when trying to download a package came up with nothing.

@fbueckert What sort of filesharing? I just use dropbox or skype

6:53 PM
@SaintWacko Home network.

Random Question (that Im not sure would remain open for a while if placed on arqade): is it a good idea to perform regular data backup of saved games on your consoles?

user15026
I suspect I could figure it out, but since I play so many games that totally aren't even remotely ever supported ever (yay casual gaming) it's not like I will be able to do any of the things I like to do in the way i like to do them

@fbueckert Oh. Never tried that. I can only get that working in Windows half the time anyways

@badp Nothing in OSX is where it's supposed to be.

@fbueckert what were you using to download these packages?

6:54 PM
@badp From what I recall, apt-get

yeah, that sounds right.

debian

@SaintWacko I've got a home network set up and configured down to a T.

I'm afraid I haven't been there or done that however so I can't relate

@badp All I'm saying is, I've been there. I tried to use it.
The resources for doing stuff are woefully lacking.

6:55 PM
In most of the guides I've seen regarding samba, they usually take you 95% of the way there
But usually leave a command or line of configuration out

and that causes explosions

@fbueckert I'm not saying you haven't, I'm just making sure you didn't do "newbie mistakes" like going to a program's homepage to download some kind of ".tar.gz" file that only opens an unzip program and the things in it tells you to make install and when you do that it tells you you need another program and then you go there etc.

@badp Tried that one, too.

@fbueckert yeah, that's like the wrong way.

6:56 PM
@badp I tried that after apt-get didn't work.

@fbueckert Still the wrong way :P

@GnomeSlice Apparently, GamersGate sent IGN invalid codes, and they're having trouble getting new ones.

So if the right way doesn't work, and the error messages are singularly unhelpful, what's a guy to do?

@fbueckert I absolutely agree, I'm just puzzled by what went wrong - that's all.

I don't hate Linux. But it's not for me. I want my stuff to work, after I spend a decent amount of time setting it up.
Linux passed the threshold of effort to progress ratio.
@badp It didn't help that the box I was installing Linux on barely met requirements.

Q: How do I use a Squirrel Snare to trap squirrels?

SaintWackoI just made a couple squirrel snares, but I can't find how to use them. Consuming doesn't do anything, nor does leaving them on the ground for a bit.

But seeing as how it was only supposed to be a fileserver. I didn't see it as a problem.

@fbueckert Well so long as you didn't fail the hard space requirement I don't see how low memory or cpu could've caused it to fail

I remember the hurdle for the file sharing was that you setup permissions to access the linux share over windows by entering the linux user credentials.

At worst it would've ran unbearably slow.

user15026
To be perfectly honest, I don't get why Linux is a thing I should use, which means I probably shouldn't use it

6:59 PM
But you still needed to explicitly run a command to set the samba password to the user's password or you wouldn't auth

@badp I installed Linux itself just fine.

@AshleyNunn Why should you try new flavors of ice cream?

It just didn't want to play nice with my network, and everything I tried to make it behave made it worse.

user15026
@badp That doesn't exactly scale - there is no barrier to entry to new flavours, I don't have to know how to use them - ice cream is ice cream is ice cream, it all works the same

@badp A new flavor of ice cream is a lot easier...
Although they both can give headaches :P

user15026
7:01 PM
@SaintWacko They all can go in the same bowl and I can use the same spoon and store them in the same freezer. :)

Ice cream doesn't punch you in the face or scream bloody murder if you take a wrong step.

@SaintWacko If you eat them too fast....

@badp That's because the computers are usually white. People like white computers. So pretty!

eh. You burn a live CD and boot from it, or make a live USB

see what I did there

7:01 PM
And they don't have that extra mouse button to confuse them!

:|

You reboot the system and OMG you're running Linux, even if temporarily.

@tiddy I suspect that's mainly ice cream. I haven't personally tried eating Linux too fast, though.

Compare with getting dressed, finding your home keys, walking the door outside, awkwardly avoiding your neighbours' stares, taking the bus ride to the ice cream place... :P

@SaintWacko was more of a metaphor

7:03 PM
@badp I don't try new flavors. I know what I like and that's good enough for me.

@OrigamiRobot You're a process inside an operative system, you don't get to use one, let alone change it.
Silly robot

@tiddy ...I know it was a metaphor, I said it in the first place...

@badp I can do whatever I want. You're not my real creator!

@badp Wait, why are your neighbours staring at you?

7:04 PM
@BenBrocka lmao

@SaintWacko (I might've been exaggerating there a little for comedic value :P)

user15026
@SaintWacko They're jealous because they don't get to go for ice cream?

@badp I thought maybe you had done something terrible in the past :P

user15026
Also, I would still have to acquire the CD or the USB, which would require leaving my house, as I don't think I have either.

Maybe it's the whole mask-and-blue-face thing.

user15026
7:05 PM
@badp That would make people a little unnerved, I think

@AshleyNunn You don't have a USB drive!?
2

@badp Ah, yes, that could do it

user15026
@badp Not that I can immediately find, no. I suspect there are some somewhere in my house, but not that I could tell you where.

@AshleyNunn Let me just check that footage...
@SaintWacko Yeah, for the SE meetup I'm considering to send in my sockpuppet rather than going in myself. That ought to make things easier for everybody involved.

user15026
@badp Okay, now I am starting to see the benefits of your stalker-dom

7:07 PM
I'll still be watching from the ceiling, in the shadows, atop a nearby building.
CLEARLY.

user15026
@badp Like a really creepy Batman

@badp I really want to make a badp sockpuppet now.

@AshleyNunn but I wanna be there :(

user15026
@badp I understand. :(

user15026
@badp >.> it could work.

7:10 PM
brb changing rooms and back.

@BenBrocka I'm not entirely sure, but this game/website might solve your problem.

Has anyone here done a full backup of their 360 hdd? to say... an external hard drive?

@RonanForman if it's a sockpuppet call it goodp

i am thinking I want to do a full drive backup of my data to an external with the transfer cable, but i thought - once you complete the transfer, it will remove the data from your xbox. Is this true?

@Ben Will do.

7:26 PM
@ZeroStack it doesn't have a plain full backup option?

Q: Can anyone track down the SC2 replay Day9 mentions in this tutorial?

ioSamuraihttp://day9tv.blip.tv/file/3732340/ It's the Back to Basics one and near the end he says to go watch a battle that I can only decipher as: besu vs kanada on longinous 2 Anyone know where this replay is listed and/or can correct my spelling? Thanks!

Too localized?
Discuss.

@InvaderSkoodge A better word would be "completely fucking stupid"
This question has no place being on the site, although I can't put into words exactly why.

@Wipqozn This is about the same as my reaction.

@Wipqozn It's not a question about a game, not really

user15026
@Wipqozn Because this.

7:31 PM
IT's very akin to a shopping advice question.
Questions which are users asking "Where can I purchase x?" are off-topic. Replacing "purchase" with "find" doesn't make any difference.

Q: Are there any fast ways to get my sons WoW account to a higher level if he doesn't qualify to SoR?

JimDelMy 11 year old sons highest character is 61. He really wants to play higher end stuff but doesn't have the time to grind up. Scroll of Resurrection can get an inactive player up to 80 which would be great, but he doesn't qualify. Are there any other promotions anyone knows about that can get him ...

user15026
@Wipqozn That's the logic I used.

I'm voting to close your question as "off-topic". Since this question was asked the rules on the site have changed considerably, and I now believe this would fall under "Shopping advice", since it is very similiar to "Where can I buy game X?" Although you're not buying the game, it still faces the same problems. — Wipqozn 6 secs ago

Engadget. I do NOT want new comments to cover the article

@BenBrocka Im not at home right now to check, but last time i did a transfer to a different hard drive it deleted all the info from the previous (or 1st hdd)

7:34 PM
When I click on the × to dismiss the popup the last thing I want is having a new comment pop the thing back up

@ZeroStack yeah, transfer sounds like it would, but at least on PS3 there's a Backup option that just backs up, and a separate thing for transfer

@BenBrocka Yeah I have done that before on my PS3 and was looking for a similar method via xbox360 :/
