Rugby football, Gaelic football, Australian rules football, Canadian football: kicking around a ball is not a cohesive sport THIS IS NOT NAM YOU NEED TO CODIFY RULES

user2334
the game people pretentiously call "football" is from the mid 19th century, when the people who created it had the sense to add a qualifier to distinguish it from all the other ball kicking activities going on

In fairness, baseball beats the shit out of football too. Any football.

I'm pretty sure the instant the ball was invented, someone kicked it. They probably named it some series of grunts and used a mammoth stomach or something.

user2334
curling > everything, eh?

@MarkTrapp Nope. Baseball is still better.
Baseball is the best.

12:05 PM
I enjoy a rousing game of Hide and Seek
Oh oh oh! Lets have a huge argument about whether it's called Hide and Seek or Hide and Go Seek
Then we can move into whether or not it should use dashes.

@OrigamiRobot Dashes? Are you some kind of fascist?

user2334
The correct name is Whippers and Snappers!

You know who made up a whole-lot-of-words-with-hyphens?
Heidegger.
And you know who Heidegger supported?
That's right.
Hitler.
The rarely employed Logical Hitler.

@LessPop_MoreFizz As you will notice I did not use them. I am just trying to create conflict. Which I have done.
Dance puppets, dance!

user2334
@LessPop_MoreFizz Well played. You have become a being-in-the-Hitler

12:09 PM
@OrigamiRobot no.

user2334
And all the robots will look up and shout, "dance for us!" And the puppet'll whisper, "no."

Is Hitler an SI unit?

user2334
it is unit system agnostic

user2334
if you use SI prefixes it's an SI unit, if you use traditional adjectives, it's Imperial

If something is only a femtoHitler of evil, is it really still evil?

12:37 PM
what a boring and pointless meeting

@InvaderSkoodge in reality the Chomse-Strasse disequation proves that nothing can be less than pi milliHitlers.
It's actually rather useful in Theology given that pi milliHitlers is actually the exact amount of milliHitlers found in God, that is something is defined mathematically to be god if and only if they reach the Chomse-Strasse limit.
This allows us to finally bring about the millennial question of whether or not a god exists in uncertain mathematical terms - merely the minimizing of milliHitlers.
Those are exciting days for Theontohitlerlogy

12:56 PM
So Hitler is only 318.309886... times more evil than God?
I don't know whether that says Hitler was a good guy or God is kind of an asshole.

Also, morning Bridge
@InvaderSkoodge And definitely the latter

@InvaderSkoodge Perhaps it's an exponential scale

@InvaderSkoodge "only"?

@badp I was expecting a number much closer to infinity.

@InvaderSkoodge It turns out the Hitler must be kind of overrated. We're still only using it because pi is a nice number.
(I'm really surprised this whole talk these days has generated 0 flags)

1:03 PM
@badp It's early still

@SaintWacko 3pm
of like day 5 of milliHitler-mania

@badp 8am

@SaintWacko Oh my, your timezone seems to be incorrect.

@badp Mine!? Yours seems to be running fast

@SaintWacko It doesn't run any faster! It's just correct!

FAE
1:05 PM
@SaintWacko Lies. @badp and I live in Correct Earth Time.

It's in the name: Correct Earth Summer Time.

FAE
For another 2 weeks at least, then we fall back.

to good ole Correct Earth Time.

FAE
Less than even.

@badp Well, maybe it's correct in summer, but it is no longer summer!

1:05 PM
@SaintWacko We like our summers long and drawn out.
It's still seaside-like weather down there in Sicily </envy>
(afaik)

FAE
It's actually like 16 here right now, not too bad.

beats the crap out of this half-hassedly-rainy fall thing we've got on our hands here.

FAE
Grey and rainy though.
@badp Yeah, that's like... the definition of Dutch autumns...

@FAE Been there done that.

FAE
@badp Haha yeah, was about to say, I'm sure you remember.

1:08 PM
except Milan doesn't feel quite as nice as Amsterdam!
It's... smoggier, for obvious reasons.

FAE
That's because there's not enough damn room in Amsterdam to drive.

nah, the reasons are more fundamental. Amsterdam's got a lot of rivers and trees to go with these
Milan's kind of have a river in it too actually, but the Navigli are in the opposite side of town.
Also I have no idea wtf they are

FAE
Navigli?

The navigli was a system of navigable and interconnected canals around Milan, Italy. The system consisted of five canals: Naviglio Grande, Naviglio Pavese, Naviglio Martesana, Naviglio di Paderno, Naviglio di Bereguardo. The first three were connected through Milan via the Fossa Interna, also known as the Inner Ring. The urban section of the Naviglio Martesana was covered over at the beginning of the 1930s, together with the entire Inner Ring, thus sounding the death knell for the north-eastern canals. Commercial carrying continued on the Naviglio Grande, but the decline was steady and by...

FAE
@badp Oooh okay.

1:10 PM
That's actually kind of a Dutch thing to do right there.
Maybe.

FAE
I should visit somewhere in Italiy someday. Considering I've lived in Europe for nearly 6 years now, I've really seen very little of it. >_>
I've been to Belgium and Germany and that's it.

@FAE Heh, I think I've been to more European countries than that. Get on it! ;)

Vienna is a nice place. You could try that next.
Also schnitzels. (which are actually from Milan)

Q: Can I see how many mission items I've found during the current mission?

MeGuustavYou can view how many bone shards, paintings and runes you've found when you are done with your mission. Can I view how much of the items I've already found while doing the mission?

Q: When is Rapid Fire better than regular fire?

kotekzotAssault soldiers can pick a perk that lets them fire their weapon twice at a -15 penalty to aim. When is it better to use this ability and when to use regular fire instead?

FAE
@TimStone You probably have! My cousin visited here last year and she hit up like, 5 countries in a week, haha.

1:14 PM

FAE
@TimStone Main issue is that we usually save up Jochem's vacation days to use for us going to the US every 2 years and stuff. And like, when you live here, you switch to that mental mode of "Oh, well it's just right there, we could go anytime."

Yeah, that's a fair point. I hardly ever visit other states for actual vacation purposes.
Hmm, where have I been in Europe? Let's see...The UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, and Latvia...so only five countries actually.

I'm instead yet to be outside Europe!

FAE
Yeah. I just went to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam this past Sunday for the first time. When I tried to go when I visited here before I moved, the lines were too long to want to wait, then after I moved, it's like "Well, it's right there" type thing. A friend of mine was visiting from New Zealand though, so I met up with him there.

@badp Slacker!

1:20 PM
I've got the UK (Cambridge), NL, B (Brugges, which is lovely), D (Berlin), F (when I was young), ES (do not go to Barcelona for New Year's Eve), A (Vienna, twice) then Prague (meh), Helsinki (meeh) and other places I forget about
...and maybe Switzerland, but only when we made a day-long trip to the CERN so it doesn't really count.

That's pretty cool so I'm going to count it anyway.

@TimStone It was now 7 years ago, the only bit I really remember is that they use tape disks for storage density reasons.
There was a whole humongous stack of those in a building.

Wait, what? I thought I was supposed to be safe camping in the cryo chamber

@SaintWacko Someone ambushed you?

@fbueckert Yeah, I got attacked in the middle of the night

1:25 PM
@SaintWacko Huh. Did someone follow your tracks?

And of course I got my ass kicked because I couldn't see my attacker
@fbueckert It had been long enough they shouldn't have been able to

@SaintWacko Interesting. I wonder what happened.

Hello everyone

@Alenanno Hello

@Alenanno Good morning

1:28 PM
Good afternoon

> Ubuntu 12.10 also includes Python 3.2.3 as standard, dropping Python 2.x (though it's still available if you need it).
Okay, that's nice.
I now feel bad that 12.10 is the only relase of Ubuntu so far I haven't been excited about since I started being excited about Ubuntu releases.
@Alenanno Salutations

I've heard that lately their quality has gone a bit down, concentrating on graphics rather than on solid code and stuff.
But I haven't personally tried them.
@badp Hi!

@Alenanno Actually the bitching's about new stuff, as ever, afaik.
Either it's Gnome 3 or Unity or Windows 8, people seem to be happy living in the desktop as it was in 2001.
(I'm happy to be living today in today's desktop. Been using Windows 8 almost exclusively since the Customer Preview came out.)

Is it good?

I like it.
It's still no Linux, but there's no other choice for gaming... yet :(

1:35 PM
That's also true.

I often miss the command line

There isn't much choice if you want to play games. :/

Q: How do I use rags to stop bleeding?

SaintWackoI have some clean rags that I found in a first aid kit, and I would like to use them as a bandage, but I can't figure out how. Clicking Consume on them does nothing.

wat

@badp Wait, Windows 8 did away with command prompt?

@BenBrocka What is that?

@BenBrocka I see...

A: When is Rapid Fire better than regular fire?

Invader SkoodgeAt 30% normal accuracy (15% with rapid fire), the two will do the same amount of damage, on average. At 29% normal accuracy, a normal attack will do more. At 31% accuracy, a rapid fire attack will do more. Assuming you do 10 damage per hit: At 29% normal accuracy, you will do 2.9 damage per ...

My answer is right.
His is wrong!
Either that or I'm as bad at statistics as I always thought I was.

@InvaderSkoodge You might want to label your axes

@MadScientist I'm bad at excel graphs and don't know how to do that.
I'll add a legend.

His answer was right as far as "hitting at least once" goes. Your answer took damage into account though with the chance of double-hits

@Sterno Which is more right.

1:56 PM
That's the best kind of right.

@Sterno I thought the best kind was most right.

Now the door is open for me to swoop in and factor in crit rates for various weapons
See if it changes to 29.2% or something!

@Sterno DO IT

No. I'm lazy.

1:57 PM
@BenBrocka Damnit, I was thinking the exact same thing!
:D
@Sterno War of the statistics!

@Sterno DO IT.

Q: How can I tell whether I should fight or flee?

FluttershyIn NEO Scavenger, I often find myself beset by looters or dogmen during my scavenging. The UI isn't very intuitive in letting me know how I compare physically. This has, unfortunately, resulted in the deaths of several fresh survivors. How can I tell when I stand a chance against one of these e...

Q: Is there any logic behind how will bonuses get added each rank?

MaxxI noticed that each soldier gets different will bonuses every promotion. Does this depend on something specific in the mission such as kills or actions, or is it completely random? Does every soldier have their own predetermined will bonuses?

!@#$%^
Playing Terraria, I was trying to fight the Destroyer. Doing it on a Blood Moon night was probably a bad idea, but I had prepared an arena, so I thought it won't be a problem.
I died when the dang thing only had around 10k health left. Was playing medium core, so all my items dropped. No big deal, just go back and grab them. Unfortunately my house was already infested with wreaths, so many that I can't even leave spawn without dying.
Then a clown popped around and dropped a few bombs, and blew out so many blocks that everything I dropped despawned.

2:33 PM
@YiJiang That sounds like a ragequit, to ensure you don't lose all your stuff.

@fbueckert It's actually for performance reasons. Maximum of 200 free items per world

@YiJiang Yeah, I understand that. But if you're fighting the destroyer, chances are good you spent quite a bit of time building up to it.
Losing all your stuff has to suck.

It's an entire set of admantite armor, spellbooks, weapons...

@YiJiang Oh, hey. Adamantite? I haven't played since Molten was the best.

You haven't played since 1.1? You probably should start playing again :P
Hardmode is pretty... interesting

2:37 PM
@YiJiang Hardmode is a lot of fun. One of my friends ran a server for half a dozen of us for a while. By the time we moved on to other games I had full Hallowed armor, the top weapons, and wings.
Oh, and a castle built out of hellstone bricks

Currently, UFO:Aftershock has my gaming time.
Gotta turn the Bridge into a lean, mean, murdering machine.

@fbueckert Am I still a badass?

@YiJiang I haven't played since that either

@BenBrocka Someone with a desktop should start up a Bridge Terraria server

@SaintWacko Yup. And you're first in line for the new Medium Armor I'm manufacturing.

2:41 PM
We can all start over with new characters
@fbueckert Woohoo!

I realized, though, that I need a ninja scout. So I'm gonna have to hire a new guy. Anybody want to be my ghost?

user15026
@fbueckert am I still being awesome?

@AshleyNunn Well, you haven't shot @Gnome lately.
I think you took out a Wargot Commander, too.

user15026
@fbueckert well, that's good. :)

I get much more time tonight to play, so we'll see how you all do.
I need a few more members for backups, for when someone is busy training or in the sickbay.

Q: Do Seraph weapons "power up" and how?

Ben BrockaAfter reading a long thread I've read that Seraph Weapons "power up" from their initial stats. Some suggested that killing enemies raised their stats or damage, and a great deal of people seemed completely unable to reproduce this. So do Seraph weapons really power up, and if so, how? Here's the...

Q: How can I get around the Raid Boss time limit?

Ben BrockaBorderlands pulled a pretty jerk move and made the new "Raid Bosses", Master Gee and Hyperious The Invincible(s), work on a 24 hour timer. user15026
@murgatroid99 that is awesome. And relatively soon.

3:13 PM
I think I'm going to do SpaceChem for now. Less ragequit potential.

@YiJiang Less?
That game can drive me insane sometimes

@murgatroid99 At least the stuff you spent hours working on won't get lost when the game decides there are too many blocks around *sigh*

@YiJiang that's true

Gawd I cannot believe how stupid that was
(I did accidentally wipe my SpaceChem save on my tablet when I upgraded the OS, but that's a different sort of stupidity)

@YiJiang That's why I always play on Easycore

3:26 PM
Hum.

@SaintWacko Mediumcore's been fairly fun so far. Each time you die you run around the house, find the last set of armor you have and run down the same set of path to find your stuff

@YiJiang You're making me want to play Terraria again :D

user15026
I don't understand Terraria and I really wish I did.

So, who wants to host a server?

Pymary is so interesting as a system

3:29 PM
@AshleyNunn Minecraft in 2D with a light RPG character progression system.

user15026
@yijiang yeah, I know, I own it. I tried playing it and I had no idea what to do.

user15026
@saintwacko what's involved?

The tutorial is terrible non-existent, yes

@AshleyNunn I think it's just running an exe

user15026
I suspect that game would be more awesome with friends who could help.

3:30 PM
@AshleyNunn Yeah, the bosses are certainly easier
Then I can show you guys my badass endgame gear before creating a new character :D

user15026
@saintwacko on a desktop? If it isn't something that costs $ (or a lot of it) then I could probably be persuaded

I'm just saying on a desktop so that it doesn't shut down when you close the laptop
If that wasn't an issue I'd host it on my laptop

user15026
@saintwacko it sounds like something I can set up.

@AshleyNunn Cool!

user15026
Let me double check with the roommate to make sure I won't explode things but I suspect I can make this happen when I am not lying on my ass because a migraine is being evil.

3:33 PM
@AshleyNunn :( That's too bad. Shoo, migraine!

user15026
@saintwacko yeah. I am displeased. Waiting for the expensive drugs to do their magic.

Migraines give me a warning before they dropkick my brain into oblivion. So I heavily dose myself with Tylenol before it gets too bad.

Oh wow
I just died of cholera
I hadn't been boiling my water :(

user15026
See mime just show up, settle in and make me dizzy and evil and then I have to take the expensive triptans and wait for vertical to be an option again. They don't happen often but when they do, it is a sucky place to be.

user15026
@saintwacko oops. You have to do that?

3:40 PM
@SaintWacko Better than getting an email taped on your dorm room door from the CDC alerting you of the fact that you died of dysentery.

@AshleyNunn I guess so

user15026
This may be one of the reasons I die all the damn time.

user15026
Because I die a lot.

@GraceNote Heh

I think I'll go to bed now. I'll read a book and cry softly over lost gear

3:41 PM
@YiJiang :(

user15026
@yijiang read something awesome and yay that will make you not want to cry. :)

@YiJiang Go read Unsounded.

It's pretty bad. There's around 400 blocks of admantite ore locked up in the stuff I lost, plus an obsidian shield which I'll probably have to generate a new world to get

user15026
@yijiang that sounds pretty not awesome.

Someone should write a textual XCOM LP.
Something like Boatmurdered.

3:45 PM
As hilarious as Boatmurdered was, I always found myself a greater fan of Bronzemurder.

> Abstract: The exponential dependence of resistivity on temperature in germanium is found to be a great big lie. My careful theoretical modeling and painstaking experimentation reveal 1) that my equipment is crap, as are all the available texts on the subject and 2) that this whole exercise was a complete waste of my time.

And given the stupid rarity of admantite it's probably better to generate a new world anyway

user15026
If I could link to things easy on my phone I would tell you all to read "How Not to poach a unicorn" because it is a really good book. (confession I know the guy who wrote it)

@InvaderSkoodge RPS is running a series

@GraceNote Looking this up now.
@YiJiang Thanks for the heads up. I'll check that out too.

3:45 PM
@InvaderSkoodge There's a link on Arqade, I'll get it for you

> Check this shit out (Fig. 1). That's bonafide, 100%-real data, my friends.

@InvaderSkoodge GuavaMoment did some that are text/screenshots lparchive.org/search/GuavaMoment#results
not of the latest game, but of the original ones, mind you.

Otto Zander, one of the XCOM:EU hero units, is a reference to those LPs

@agent86 I might check these out. I fear I don't know enough about the old ones to enjoy them, though.

3:47 PM
> Conclusion: Going into physics was the biggest mistake of my life. I should've declared CS. I still wouldn't have any women, but at least I'd be rolling in cash.

Wait, one of the pics is broken, let me get a cleaner place

@InvaderSkoodge well, maybe the one(s) from the original game? I think there's a lot of similarities.

I changed the link, Strix, use the new one to read it. It's short enough and worth it.

@GraceNote Thanks. I'll check it out shortly.
I always find a good text+screenshot LP much, much more entertaining than a video one.

FAE
@InvaderSkoodge I tend to enjoy those more as well.

3:52 PM
@InvaderSkoodge Where will you be posting it?

@GraceNote I would like instead to take a moment to remember [Tag: Murder]

@RonanForman Huh?

@InvaderSkoodge You said you were thinking of making an XCOM LP, where will I find it?

@badp I can only remember .

@GraceNote Have you read Boatmurdered?

9 mins ago, by Invader Skoodge
Someone should write a textual XCOM LP.

@InvaderSkoodge Oops. I misread, never mind.

I hope you have

@SaintWacko In its entirety.

3:53 PM
I'll consider it.

I refer you to my earlier comment:

@MadScientist Reading is for sissies.

@GraceNote Good :D

In unrelated news, putting your phone-device's ring tone on your music playlist isn't the smartest of ideas.

user15026
@gracenote I can see how it might cause confusion.

Funny thing is that it's not that I react to the playlist as if my phone rang, it's more "Will I actually pick up the phone?"

user15026
4:04 PM
Because you don't associate it with being a noise that actually is alerting you to something?

so. yeah. this happened
I wrote an article for my blog about using python with amazon glacier, and I tried a couple of clients, was not terribly impressed with either
but I'm quoted on the "media coverage" page of one of the clients
saying "eh, it worked fine for the most part"
not exactly a glowing review, y'know?
and I don't know that my random blog about video games really counts as "media coverage"
but hey, I guess free SEO, yeah?
just... puzzling that they would pick that to feature.

user15026
That is pretty incredibly random.

user15026
Kinda like those crowd sourced Twitter "papers" that are just links to links to articles people posted

I think it bumped me up to the first page of google results for "amazon glacier python" which is kind of neat.
I don't think I've ever been on the first page of google results for anything other than, well, searching specifically for my site.

user15026
That is pretty cool, actually!

4:13 PM
I suppose I probably have from arqade posts in the past, although that's mostly SE google juice rubbing off on me

user15026
awkward mental image

@AshleyNunn hey, you're the one who was reloading her LMG last night and then going "ooooh, yeah, I'm ready" so I don't want to hear it.

user15026
@agent86 just because I really really like my weapons is no reason to judge!

Lightning Machine Gun?

@GraceNote just a light machine gun. although it is plasma-based, so there's that.

Q: Is there a quick way to defeat Master Gee?

Ben BrockaTurns out there's a cheap, quick way to beat Hyperious the Invincible. However neither the Baby Maker trick (thow lots of strong explosive reloads) or The Bee & Conference Call combo seem to work against Master Gee. In fact, the only apparent way to kill Gee is to "kite" him for 10+ minutes,...

Amazon glacier python sounds like an amazing serpent that thrives in hot, humid weather but can breathe cold and ice like a white dragon.
Alternately, it sounds like a condom brand.

@Sterno hmm, I'm not sure there's much that's sexy about glaciers. I suppose they cleave, though.

@SaintWacko Windows never had a proper command prompt

@Sterno That's about as good an idea as HADOPI was.

4:36 PM
@fbueckert The idea is not banning homework, but making students do homework at school
at least from what I've skimmed
So basically that means more school hours.
(Not so hot looking now, is it? :P)

I stand by the statement. :P Either way, it's not a good idea.

4:54 PM
Chat is boring today. I wish it was Friday so I could troll you with Rebecca Black links.

@badp What's so different about it? I use both Linux and Windows and never found much of a difference

@Sterno ಠ_ಠ

@fbueckert Indeed. HADOUKEN was a much better idea

Hrm. I need my links flagged as offensive. That way it can troll everyone who responds to the flag from other chatrooms.

user15026
@sterbo you still could but it would be less relevant.

user15026
4:55 PM
@sterno that's a terrible plan.

@SaintWacko There's not much difference in the co... actually, no, fuck that, even in the core components bash is incredibly superior to cmd.exe

@Sterno There's enough mods in here that the flags will be very short-lived, and then you'll be banned from chat

@badp Thats why anyone seriously needing to use the shell in windows activates Powershell :D

@James If I'm going to bother with Powershell I'm going to just code my stuff in C# instead

@badp To each their own :)

4:57 PM
After all, to do something as normal as downloading one file with Powershell

uh oh, a windows vs linux command line flame war

you need to instantiate a C# class, call the method and then pipe it down a file object
or some such thing
compare that with wget http://whatever/

quick, activate the fire suppression-slash-oppression systems on the bridge!

(if your counterargument is that it's trivial to re-write wget in Powershell, I'll reject it by saying that it's so simple a decent Powershell distribution should ship with it.)
(Also wget has about a hundred flags that you don't get from the recipe on the internet.)

@badp There is no such thing as a counter argument to a pointless debate :P

4:59 PM
@James It's only pointless if you believe it is :P
