Is there a Debian/ArchLinux supported webserver which is of a "transitional package" (fully-rolling release, without leaps like from Apache 2.4 to 3.4 to 4.4 and so forth)?

Something that even Ansible could fully continuously-upgrade?

I ask this due to this question and comments by @StephenKitt

Q: How to enable and disable Apache modules with Ansible in a version-agnostic way?

JohnDoeaAfter I install Apache2 with Ansible, I should execute a2enmod http2 deflate expires. a2enmod or a2dismod are non version-agnostic commands. The Ansible Apache docs doesn't include a non version-agnostic syntax of these commands (unlike Ansible's apt module's state: latest option for example, t...

hi
i need help in the find command
can someone help me
i've need one help in linux find command. lets say i've 10 files which is created today. i want to use the find command to keep the latest two files and delete the rest of the files. But using only find command `find . -maxdepth 1 -type f -name 'file*'` and NOT using pipe out to `sort -rn | tail -n +2 | xargs -rm`
?

9:26 AM
@JohnDoea What do you mean by “fully-rolling release” for a web server?

9:53 AM
@Stuxnet78 Questions similar to this have been asked multiple times on the main U&L site. You should be able to find them by searching.

10:35 AM
@Stuxnet78 You will have more people looking at your question posting in the main site and not here. If you already done it in the main site, please do not post here also.

@ClausAndersen One reason I dislike emojis is that apart from the most common ones, I can almost never tell what the are supposed to be. I don't have good eyes. Is that a monkey? Aah, a reference to that monkey discussion... I never fully understood it.

12:15 PM
@Kusalananda It was just triggered by the little Dr Seuss poem I wrote:
Nov 29 at 16:55, by terdon
@JeffSchaller Tsk, wasted opportunity there: My day is complete, my monkey fed, I answered a question, I answered with ed!

12:32 PM
@terdon If a thousand monkeys were given an ed editing session, would they still be able to exit it?

@Kusalananda what kind of keyboard and keymap are they using?
(I’ll suggest ignoring the probability that they manage to enter a key-remapping command)

@StephenKitt Do they care? I think it's more a matter of what the size of the keys are.

@Kusalananda the probabilities depend on the number of directly-accessible characters ;-)

True, that.

Is there a nice diagram of the ed state machine somewhere? Asking for a friend

12:37 PM
Hmm... interesting question. I don't know.
Also, my search history now includes "keyboards for monkeys".

@Kusalananda yes, that just popped up on FiveEyes
oops

:-)

1:12 PM
@PrabhjotSingh I just signed a do-not-resuscitate form for my mother. From what I can tell, it doesn't look like she is going to live much longer. Thanks for your help with this.

2:07 PM
@llllIIIIIllllllIIIIIIlllII You are probably not here but just in case... Please see Jeff's Question-and-Answer about writing a well-received question. Asking "I wrote this shell script, what do you think about it?" is not the type of questions that we deal with really. Instead, a question should focus on ideally one thing that you are having an issue with.

morning gents. I have a question that I know is here somehow, but I can't think of the right words to ask it (or find the existing one)
if I write a command and I want to output it to a file

Such as

foo.exe parameters > myfile.txt

But I don't want to write if there's an error.
What do I command?

error are usually send to stderr not stdout
to redirect stdout to file do
`command param > file` and stderr should be display in terminal
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Bash-Prog-Intro-HOWTO-3.html
@goodguy5

2:24 PM
@Kiwy yes, but that's not what I mean.
the file still gets blank written

@goodguy5 please write it up as a question on the main site

oh, but putting it in graves didn't write a file, interesting
@StephenKitt Like I said, I'm also not sure the good words and I don't like putting up bad questions
I'm most of the way there, though

@goodguy5 other users will help you find the right words (or the duplicate question if there already is one)
in chat you’ll only get the ideas of the users present in the chat, there are far more active users on the main site

2:39 PM
@StephenKitt I think that I've gotten my thoughts to where I want them. blank output

3:04 PM
@goodguy5 The shell would create the file that you redirect to even before the command executes, so there is no real way you could catch an error and not create the file. You may however catch an error and remove the file with utility >file || rm -f file.

@Kusalananda oh, interesting. I didn't realize that. Though, I guess that makes sense once I think about how the Shell actually does things.

3:45 PM
@RuiFRibeiro @JeffSchaller it's hard to reach, but your monkey goal sound a lot of fun I shall help you in any way :D

4:03 PM
@Kiwy His monkeys! ;)

@Kiwy if you have a hard-to-reach monkey, maybe it's because he's on your back?

@JeffSchaller Ho my god a monkey on my back ? I didn't notice though, but those sneaky b******ds are good

@JeffSchaller I used to monkey around with my daughter, when she was younger saying she was opening a school of monkeys because she was always picking her nose.
2
My fav TV serie used to be "12 Monkeys"

so much monkey business going on lately! illegally importing hypothetical monkeys, then feeding them, then giving them keyboards and an ed session
and now our chat star box is full of monkeys!
2

Hey, stop monkeing around!

4:13 PM
My day is complete, our chat box is full of monkeys; we appear to be a bunch of U&L junkies
5

Nah, a bunch of U&L monkeys ;)
Monkey overflow here in our chat box.....help me!
You need a monkey tag.....but I hope nobody posts questions about whether their monkey is pregnant.
I dont even got a cat and I know that by that time the litter is hidden somewhere. ;-P

4:49 PM
@StephenKitt by a "fully rolling release webserver" I mean to any webserver which is of non-transitional package, that is, a version-agnostic package apt update && apt upgrade, as well as Ansible's state=latest could both upgrade automatically in a single action without any manual intervention as should be needed in Apache (sadly, it really makes me sad).

5:47 PM
@Kusalananda I don't know if it's possible, actually, but I'm wondering if you would take a 2nd look at unix.stackexchange.com/a/489511/117549?
IMHO it's a self-answer situation, although as I commented, it could use some help from the OP to make it clearer that it's an Answer.

6:07 PM
@JeffSchaller I will look again shortly. Thanks.
@JeffSchaller I had a second look. The syntax is different from the code at the GitHub link that you posted. I really can't tell whether he's posting his attempted solution (a clarification to the question) or whether this is the real solution. I don't use NixOS, so I can't test it.
I've left a comment to this effect.
... roughly.

@JohnDoea Wait, what? I used to be a release manager, but I didn't follow what you siad.

6:28 PM
@Kusalananda fair enough; thank you! There was another page on the NixOS github that showed the OP's Answer as a stock example of that parameter, so now I'm less sure, myself. Hopefully they can fill us in.
@Kusalananda also, in re: unix.stackexchange.com/posts/489532/revisions, the only quibble I have is that the OP (and my answer) specify -type f so directories shouldn't be matched. It's a good general clarification, though.

@JeffSchaller If we're spending more time than him trying to understand the answer, then it's not an answer :-)

@Kusalananda heh! I just happened to notice it when the Q was posted, and the A was posted at the same time, leading me down the "self-answered" path.

@JeffSchaller Ah, sorry. I read the question as more general, but then again, I sometimes try to generalise my own answers a bit... Revert if it's not in your style.

it's good info; I'm just not sure if it's distracting from the main point or not. I'm OK with it.

@JeffSchaller Was this comment directed to reviewers or to the OP. I'm guessing the OP, right?

6:49 PM
@Kusalananda correct; I quickly read the linked Q and wasn't sure if it emphasized that well enough

7:40 PM
ah, I see.

is making a local sym-link on each box an option?
I don't know anything about Ansible, but we used apache and not all of our boxes ran the same version
however, for stability and testing, boxes running the same product should be using the same apache version whenever possible

Interestingly enough, before entering the chat, dialogs with blocked users appear
scary. lol

what?
like, in the "other chats" bar thing to the right?

@RuiFRibeiro Huh?

@RuiFRibeiro Huh? Where? I just left and came back and didn't see anythijng...

@Fabby @Kusalananda Dialog of users I blocked

7:52 PM
@RuiFRibeiro Ah! Users you blocked

@Fabby yeah.

I only ignore users if they get annoying. Hasn't happened in over 2 years...

@Fabby Here in chat plenty of noise....anyway, the block only works in chat.

@RuiFRibeiro I mean even you aren't on my ignore list!
:D

@Fabby ;-|P

7:53 PM
I'm not even sure that I knew you could block users.
using fabby as a guinea pig
Can someone tell fabby to say something? (not sure if he can see my text)

Bla bla
You ccan see me jump to the front of the queue
Let me try pinging you @goodguy5
@RuiFRibeiro say something so you move to the head of the queue

oh, neat. it shows up in the side bar of another chat. Maybe that's what they meant. otherwise I can't see nothing

Am I unblocked unhidden again?

user141350
@goodguy5 you mean to sites-enabled symlink or some other symlink I don't know of? :)))

@Fabby you are now

7:58 PM
Yeah, It's neat, unless you do it accidentally to a mod.
Doesn't go well

@Fabby ;)

I mean a symlink on the webserver.

each webserver has something like /bin/apache/apache_current which is actually a symlink of your live apache version on that server.

your sysadmin box has some script some smart people wrote.

The script takes some parameters (or is VERY specific).

your admin box ssh's to each webserver. updates the file. invokes apache. bob's you're uncle

@Fabby Answered a question just because well, the subject is minimally interesting....the OP does not seem much interested in engaging. unix.stackexchange.com/questions/489529/…

@RuiFRibeiro You can put your ports in stealth mode...
@goodguy5 Unless those are seconds, it's not really Be Right Back

8:03 PM
Time is a relative construct.

user141350
@goodguy5 I don't know what you mean sadly, maybe a comment with an article in my question (which I just edited) could help point me to research this efficiently in the small time I have in the coming days... I don't know that upgrade-concept for Apache; I aspire to have only once Apache per each (IaaS-Debian or IaaS-ArchLinux) machine, and always in the latest version possible, and with as much automation as I can.

@Fabby Is not stealth dropping the packets to not used ports?

@RuiFRibeiro Ever heard of port knocking?

@Fabby was saying that....you should have told that firstly ;)

all packets are always dropped until you port knock first

8:05 PM
@Fabby I usually put things behind VPNs or use X.509 auth....or both. not much fond of port knocking in enterprise use..

@RuiFRibeiro Yeah, but what about public-facing stuff?
(Anyway +1 but you got that already, didn't you?

@Fabby I am talking about Internet facing stuff....for critical services before the widespread use of VPNs I used X.509 client authentication for Apache.

@RuiFRibeiro I can use a +1 here
@RuiFRibeiro Googling that...

@Fabby Basically if you do not install a X509 cert generated by the site CA in your browser, puff, no site for ya, or at least private sections of the site, depending on configs.
@Fabby The red spetacles is retro fan...liking an old question.

@RuiFRibeiro Ah, cool.
@RuiFRibeiro Your supposition or it's confirmed?

8:11 PM
@Fabby I already got several....confirmed.

OK..

@Fabby sorry, upvoting.
@Fabby Someone post there a link saying the same-.... upvoting an answer +1 year old.

@RuiFRibeiro Yup. Found that...

@PrabhjotSingh My mother just died. It's been a fun evening.

@FaheemMitha My condolences on this difficult time.

8:15 PM
@RuiFRibeiro Thank you.

@FaheemMitha I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you're with friends and/or family.

@Kusalananda Thank you. Rather short of both, unfortunately.
But I did have some family members show up.

I've got the Merlin!
I've got the merlin
I've got the wizards hat!

@FaheemMitha One day at a time, slowly.

@Kusalananda Agreed.

8:17 PM
(That's the one I wanted, sorry!)

@JohnDoea I'll see what I can find really quick
oh duh, I completely forgot about serverfault.

@Fabby How to get it?

@FaheemMitha Were you present?

@Kusalananda Was I present for what?

@FaheemMitha Of her passing.

8:20 PM
@RuiFRibeiro I dunno...

If you mean when it happened, no. When I arrived at the hospital, she had already died.
I was at home, and a little slow to respond.

@FaheemMitha I was able to sit with my mother for a while after she had died. I found it quite strange, but I'm so happy I got the opportunity.

@FaheemMitha Your mum died?

@Fabby Earn an Enlightened badge

My condolences...
:48106002 this is what happened in the last 24h:

8:22 PM
@Fabby Yes. At 9.45 pm IST Monday. Around 4 hours ago now.

@Fabby Earn an Enlightened badge

@FaheemMitha Do you have any brothers or sisters?

@Fabby One sister. Handicapped. A real mess, actually.

@FaheemMitha OK, well, then you'll have the same mess that I had July 21st... Lots of running around to get admin shit sorted.
and according to German law, you only get 2 days to take care of it,

We just had a big discussion about how to break the news to her, but she took it surprisingly well.
@Fabby Are you serious? That's terrible.

8:24 PM
whereas my mum died in Belgium, so that was definitely not enough.

Two days to take care of what?

@FaheemMitha Anything. 2 business days bereavement leave.

@Fabby Oh, you mean from your job/work? That's strange and cruel.

In Germany that's enough to call an undertaker and get cremation sorted, but in Belgium???

@Fabby I would swear here it is 4 days for parents, 2 days for siblings

8:26 PM
Took me 4 days full tilme work as my brother was a plane ticket away...
@RuiFRibeiro 5 calendar days in Belgium for first degree.

@Fabby I see.

1 day for second degree.
Italy is worse: 2 days (or maybe only 1 too, have to ask my cousin) for 1st degree, but 1 day for 2nd and 3rd degree.

@Fabby Just checked. 5 for first degree, 2 for 2nd

I didn't get to say goodbye. She was on a ventilator for weeks, and had been mostly unconscious for 10 days or so. Maybe a little less.

@FaheemMitha My condolences

8:28 PM
No, I think 10 days are about right.
@goodguy5 Thank you. I realise this is off-topic here, but I had been discussing her with @PrabhjotSingh, so I thought I would tell him.

@FaheemMitha I got to see her lucid 5 days before she died.

@JohnDoea Sorry, I can't find anything off hand. I'll reach out to my old boss and see if he has any good links.

@Fabby Did you say goodbye?

@FaheemMitha well no, but she wasn't ill then
I still got to see her and talk and fall asleep on her sofa...

@Fabby Oh, it was so sudden? I'm sorry.

8:30 PM
@Fabby I was one of the few that said goodbye to my godfather before he died of cancer...extended family has often the strange habit of only appearing after the fact.

@FaheemMitha Staphylococcus aureus: 3 days between going to the hospital and dying...
@RuiFRibeiro I got to say goodbye to everyone except my godmother and mum. (2 sisters to one another)

@Fabby Yes, the proximate cause of her death was also infection. Multi-resistant infections, courtesy of the hospital.

@FaheemMitha Staphylococcus Aureus is of the same family of the multi-resistant infectionaous family.
If she would have been in the hospital when she got it, everyone ould have said courtesy of the hospital

@Fabby So she didn't get it at the hospital?

However, we're pretty sure she got it outside of the hospital

8:33 PM
@Fabby Oh. That's worrying.

I told the doctor as much and he said that between 30 and 60% of people are crriers of that bacteria nowadays.
If you would prick 100 people with a needle, 30 to 60 would get infected, but only the weak would actually die...

@Fabby Of multi-resistant strains? That's terrifying.

@FaheemMitha Multi-resistant strain families
Difference.

@Fabby I'm not sure I grasp the difference.

@FaheemMitha some individual bacteria are resistant and most are not

8:36 PM
@Fabby That's families?

so if you have a few, your white bloodcells will stil kill them whereas the others are killed by antibiotics.
if you're weak and have a lot, you still die.
if you're strong and have a ton, you also die
If you're a dirty old bastard like me that doesn't care about hygiene much,

This answer really needs to be updated.

You're less likely to die of an infection as your immune system is kept well-trained.

@Fabby dirty old bastard LOL

@FaheemMitha edited by Muru in 2015
@RuiFRibeiro I'm hardly ever ill...

a dangerous comparison, but

one might think of them as races/nationalities. The general populations of northern Ireland are not well inoculated against many of the harsh effects of the Sun. Though, some people born there tan and not burn.

Compared with the general populations of many peoples of Africa that are generally hardened from the sun.

@Fabby Minor formatting stuff.

@Fabby I got some respiratory complications usually after the 2nd winter flu....

@RuiFRibeiro In 30 years, I had 3 days of sick leave until recently...
... when the doctor sent me home for 30 days because I was overworked and ready to collapse...
@RuiFRibeiro I get the flu once every 10 years...
... for 2 days...

I get sick about every 2-3 years

Monstly on a week-end.

8:41 PM
@Fabby I have heard drunkards do not get easily the flu.... joking.

@goodguy5 Sick? I get sick if I have too much alcohol.

Ill? inflicted? snuffly?

("sick" = "puke your guts out", "ill" = well, "ill")
@goodguy5 Ah sorry!
(Unless you're from the US)

the rest of the worls sniggers when the US natives go "I'm sick" because we all think, but not say Stop drinking so much then!
;-) :D

8:43 PM
interesting, we also say "snicker"
likely because "snigger" is REALLY close to a serious slur

@goodguy5 I once had a US boss who asked the full UK management team:
"Is it OK to wear pants to the office?"

haha

the polite answer was: "That's totally up to you! You do or you don't"

@Fabby HAHA

Me with my big mouth:
"Ann, what you just asked was: "Can I wear underwear to the office"?

8:45 PM
@Fabby Well, you have the European pant day in the tube.....

it's trousers here!
All the UK people going: "We don't tell the Americans that!"
@goodguy5 (I'm not British...)

@Fabby Do you have different words for different types of underwear?

@goodguy5 Pants are grandma's underwear and panties are modern ones.

What about men's underwear?

@Fabby I got a pretty idea of the difference between BE and US Eng....was educated in the former, and the latter is so prevalent here too.

@RuiFRibeiro It's hard sometimes...
I remember saying at the end of a meeting with the US:
Hey guys, are we done now because I'm dying to go outside and have a fag!
Total and utter silence
One smart guy asking: "What do you mean?"
me "I want to go have a smoke"

@Fabby LOOOOL

uprorious laughter ensues

8:59 PM
@Fabby Classic.

I was educated that the British "fag" and the American "fag" had totally different meanings! @goodguy5

@Fabby Talking about BE, Black Adder does it ring a bell?

@RuiFRibeiro Of course! Last series plays in Belgium!
