OK i left yesterday at 17:15, and now there's 230 message to read ?
what the actual F... happen ? Monkeys again ?

@Kiwy ... or to ignore

@StephenKitt a wise man once told me to never ignore the insignificant

that wise man wasn't sober

@Kiwy or Sherlock Holmes
(who wasn’t sober either)

8:37 AM
@StephenKitt Indeed he wasn't sober indeed he was Sherlock

5 hours later…
1:18 PM
@Fabby for some reason that one always made sense to me.

I don't get the Sherlock reference.

1:41 PM
The infinite monkey theorem states that a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type any given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare. In fact, the monkey would almost surely type every possible finite text an infinite number of times. However, the probability that monkeys filling the observable universe would type a complete work such as Shakespeare's Hamlet is so tiny that the chance of it occurring during a period of time hundreds of thousands of orders of magnitude longer than the age of the universe is extremely...

@FaheemMitha Holmes pays extreme attention to detail, even the tiniest of details

2:39 PM
@Kiwy Is my monkey pregnant? I would apreciate someone HELLLLP me. Btw, anything against monkeys? ;)

@RuiFRibeiro I could give you a good vet phone number in Lyon they love monkeys
so do I of course

4:16 PM
@StephenKitt As in "a wise man once told me to never ignore the insignificant"?

@FaheemMitha yes

@PrabhjotSingh Did you see my message?

4:32 PM
@FaheemMitha Yes, I was busy. So i could not reply.
My condolences.

How is this one not "opinion-based"? I don't dare flag it (even though I think it should be flagged) as it would probably close it, and it's upvoted to 50... unix.stackexchange.com/questions/30454/…

@Kusalananda what would be wrong with closing it? It’s at no risk of being deleted.
I’ve voted to close it...

5:13 PM
@StephenKitt Ok, good, me too.

@PrabhjotSingh Thank you.

@FaheemMitha I could not help you.

@PrabhjotSingh You did help. Thank you.
Does anyone know how the default settings in things like alsamixer and pavucontrol are determined?

5:32 PM
And if not, would that be a suitable question for the site?

@FaheemMitha probably, but as two questions, one for ALSA, and another for PulseAudio

@StephenKitt Ok. Are the answers to these not readily available, then? I'm not that familiar with sound on Linux, but it's frequently a gigantic pain. And settings apparently changing by themselves is part of it.
Similar comments for aumix too. What sound system would aumix belong to?

5:52 PM
@FaheemMitha aumix uses ALSA directly

@StephenKitt Oh. And how is that different from alsamixer?

@FaheemMitha oh wait sorry, aumix uses OSS

6:22 PM
@StephenKitt Both aumix and alsamixer seem to affect my system. One of the many things I don't understand (or have forgotten) about Linux Sound is how those two are connected. But I suppose I could look it up.

@FaheemMitha yes, all mixers which can talk to a supported interface on your system will affect it. aumix talks to OSS, which is mapped to ALSA (thanks to the modules pulled in by oss-compat; check out who maintains that). alsamixer talks to ALSA directly. Changes made in either will show up in the other.

@StephenKitt I suppose the recommended thing these days is to bypass OSS directly.

@FaheemMitha well, if it works, I don’t see any urgency, but it’s supported on a small number of distros now

@StephenKitt Well, it's better to use more standard methods is available. So do you think that these are reasonable questions, then?

@FaheemMitha yes, for both ALSA and PulseAudio.

6:29 PM
And I don't really see why they can't all be part of one question.
It's closely related, at least.

Because the answers will be very different for ALSA and PA.

@StephenKitt Oh

@Fabby Another day, another revenge downvoting... bah... unix.stackexchange.com/questions/481024/… unix.stackexchange.com/questions/478617/…

@RuiFRibeiro Mitigated...
Good night!
