12:00 AM
not as Wild as Wacky as a 0-byter (or even better -1 bytes with jquery, which is a new and original joke)

12:41 AM
would a negative byte be that the interpreter is a byte and when you run it, it prints Hello, World! and deletes itself?

12:52 AM
Ooh
that could work
I kinda want to try this now

maybe like
you have the interpreter loaded in memory, you'd contrive things so that you have the solution loaded immediately afterwards if it had a non-negative byte count, so if it's negative instead you take bytes off the end of the interpreter and your solution's behavior is that of running the truncated interpreter

Very interestting
How would you represent it?

i guess it would just be the negative byte count itself

For something to have a negative byte-count, it's existence must truly offer MORE space upon the system.
Otherwise it's just sparkling 0 bytes.
As such, I propose we program in Drive Names.

1:51 AM
@AidenChow what is your pfp? I've been wondering for a few weeks now and I can't quite make out which way it's pointing and whether it's wearing a hat or not.

@lyxal its just a random scribble that i drew years ago
it should look kinda like a face
idek what i was trying to draw, but i just kept it as my pfp
i just remember i drew it on the google hangouts drawing function when it still had that

@AidenChow it does, but I can't tell which way it faces lol

it's pretty clearly facing left

I wouldn't say clearly

with a colossal nose
and like an arrow bent through it

1:55 AM
actually now thinking back on it, i think i drew a random scribble and it just happened to look like a face, so i made a few additions and boom, my pfp

@UnrelatedString it could also be a right-facing :/
with a weird-af hat

oh i can see that now too

now you see the confusion as to which way it's pointing

huh i always looked at that part as hair, not a hat lol
i can see it now tho

wait so it's supposed to be right facing?

1:57 AM
idk
not sure what u guys mean by left and right facing

2:12 AM
taking ybtc now

Wait hold up, that's not a thumb poking out of the top of its head?
2

@AidenChow it looks either like someone screaming with a monobrow and really long nose or a :/ with a hat

No no, hold up, I'm having trouble believing that this isn't how it's always been interpreted by everyone. Sorta like an optical illusion where you get stuck seeing it one way and have to really try to see it the same way someone else does.
You should unleash this on the internet as a laurel/yanny thing

2:27 AM
@RadvylfPrograms well I usually see it as the long nose screaming but once I look closer it's a :/
but I've never seen a thumb until now
@AidenChow is the face pointing towards the top-left or the bottom-right is what we mean

Makes sense

@lyxal when i made this, i didnt consider the 3d aspect of it. i was just kinda thinking about it like a 2d cartoony drawing iirc

we're talking about the 2d aspect
it's either facing <- or ->
and we can't tell which
like which way is it looking on a compass?

I don't see how it could be left
Unless the thing on its thumb is an eye in the left-facing interpretation

2:33 AM
lol why is everyone looking so into my pfp all of the sudden
is it really that interesting

like that

@RadvylfPrograms OMG hand reveal /s

but rotated the other way

@lyxal That looks so cuursed

@AidenChow I've been meaning to ask for a while lol

2:34 AM
@emanresuA hhh

@lyxal Hmm, I see

@AidenChow Make it like Ginger's NP/SP challenge where you need to draw a red circle around either the left or right facing variant :p

the chinese for (in)dependent variable are just too similar

@RadvylfPrograms dang can't believe Radvylf's Limbs™ is catching up to the limb stealing capacity of The Organisation™

we should probably use off topic chat room for convos like this lmao

Nah, it's CGCC related since it has to do with your profile

we're on number 9!!!

Number 9?

a large one no doubt

nine: commonly considered the number between eight and ten

I heard the mathematicians were voting to potentially move it, though

2:52 AM
@RadvylfPrograms we're the 9th place

is this a kahoot you're taking?

we took 0.78 seconds on this question but we think it is wrong
@lyxal a menti YBTC

it's correct

that could be a better room

2:55 AM
OK bye

I'd offer to move the messages myself but that might not be until next week lol

lol
how often do you have ro election

As often as needed

Only when we need to

there's no fixed schedule

2:59 AM
About every two years is probably a good estimate, but it'll likely be a while since we're about to have seven or eight ROs

it just happens to be that we've had an election two years in a row

so only when one retires?

@RadvylfPrograms speaking of that, say no one else nominates by the cut-off time, do you think you'll just appoint 3?
@NumberBasher maybe, if we feel we need a replacement

We haven't discussed it much (I've mentioned the possibility in our private room, but no response yet), but it's possible

@lyxal so like about every 2 years, hmm
what does ro get to do

3:01 AM
Not much. You can move messages to other rooms, pin things, and kick users (which we almost never need to do)

kick users? did that ever happen in the last month
or year
or even decade

I've never had to kick someone
Although it's happened a few times in the last year

@RadvylfPrograms who how why or not supposed to tell

I've only kicked people for science

@emanresuA wdym
huh???

3:04 AM
@NumberBasher I can't say who (not that I could remember in the first place :p), but people are only kicked if they break the rules, and continue to do it after we ask them to stop

@RadvylfPrograms it's something I'd strongly recommend - not for my sake but for the sake of whoever would come third if only two ROs were appointed. It'd be pretty awkward for them to see the other two candidates win and not them (especially if it was a close call). And that could lead to months of not-feeling-too-good about the results.

@NumberBasher As in, just to see what happens

i dont understand like who would want to
> break the rules, and continue to do it after we ask them to stop

@lyxal That's true. All three of y'all are, in my experience, pretty mature, and the role of RO is mostly symbolic, so I don't think there'd be too many hard feelings, but if there's only three candidates and they're all well-received I don't see any reason we can't just RO them all, and the more the merrier :p

+ there's no bad side
unless an ro decides
he want to kick rand users
or stuff

3:06 AM
@lyxal That would probably be me :P

RO kicks or suspensions can always be undone by another RO or mod.

Kick-mutes can't be undone by ROs, but they're temporary

@emanresuA and I don't want you to have to go through the several months of feeling like you just missed out like I did last year

Thank you :)
Apr 30 at 2:58, by hyper-neutrino
that's something I find acts as a reasonable measure of security - the amount of trouble an RO could cause us is a lot less than the amount of trouble we could cause them should they intentionally try to commit abuse, and to be honest, I have very little suspicion any of you would intentionally cause harm; at worst you'd be ineffective ROs

@NumberBasher pxeger, emanresuA and I have the reputation of Vyxal to keep us accountable as a last resort, Radvylf has NP/SP and RTO to keep him accountable as a last resort, caird has their potential future moderator campaign to keep them accountable as a last resort and Adam and Bubbler both have the reputation of APL to keep them accountable as a last resort
so the current ROs + potential ROs all have reasons to not do that
to not do a little trolling with their RO privileges

3:13 AM
All three candidates have so far been very reasonable and mature people the vast majority of the time, and if they wanted to do damage, 10k-20k rep would give them the power to do much worse things than kicking a bunch users for half an hour (which alerts every mod online) or renaming TNB

Plus, anything an RO does is (mostly) easily reversible by other ROs, and kick-mutes + suspensions + main site suspensions if needed keep people in line :P

i know

@lyxal well bubbler doesn’t have apl and pxeger probably cares more about ato than vyxal but all of the candidates are mature enough that we don’t need to worry

i think even if you put like every user 500+rep is to there still wouldn't be a problem imo

The most disruputive thing an RO can do is to mass-move a bunch of messages, I think

3:16 AM
@NumberBasher We actually discussed something like that a while back, although with 10k instead of 500

@user you're probably right about Bubbler, but pxeger mentioned Vyxal in his nomination, meaning that he cares somewhat about the reputation of Vyxal
if it wasn't something respectable, he wouldn't have mentioned it

> potential future moderator campaign
I have no idea what you're talking about :P

Apr 30 at 3:17, by caird coinheringaahing
To be completely blunt, I have two main goals here: get elected mod and get a gold badge. Once they both happen, I'm content to take much more of a backseat role of just being around when needed (flags, weighing in on meta from time to time) and mostly ignoring main
methinks you do :p

TBF I also have one of those in mind :p

@RadvylfPrograms You have to wait tho :P
@lyxal shh

3:18 AM
lol

Yeah, but I'm betting on HN, WW, and JoKing staying active long enough that I'll be 18 by the next election :p
We should make our next one line up with the US's 2024 presidential election, to make things confusing. "caird's winning right now, but the incumbent, Biden, might just be able to make a comeback once Illinois's votes are counted"

@lyxal Also, I do take issue with me being held accountable by any potential run for mod. Even if I had no interest in being a mod, I wouldn't abuse my RO powers, primarily because I believe I've earned a lot of people's respect here, and I wouldn't throw that away just to change the room name :P

I was just listing the most obvious/pertinent reasons

For april fools' day we really should rename this room to something confusing though :p

Fair enough :P

3:20 AM
of course everyone else has other reasons
and notice that I also said "as a last resort"

@lyxal wait what? No, I don't believe that, I think reputation of other things is 100% the only thing preventing this room from lawlessness
(tho, I guess that's kinda true :P)

it's like a sort of personal stake really
like a security deposit
that's more what I meant

Actually Radvylf's reputation is what keeps me from doing stupid stuff, not the other way around.
5

@lyxal man, if I could secure a house simply by saying "Hey, so you know this code golf site..." :P

@lyxal rip xnor
@cairdcoinheringaahing definitely, especially since you don't even need to be an RO on the destination. i imagine this could be easily abused but intentionally doing something like this to clog up another room would surely just get you banned and messages can be moved back anyway

3:24 AM
Albeit with the annoying arrows
(Which I maintain should never have existed in the first place)

@cairdcoinheringaahing I'm surprised this room has not fallen into lawlessness even with reputation.

@forest *hastily hides the last 10 years of room history* yeah, me too

@NewPosts what the, why is new posts talking

@AidenChow Someone posted a challenge where the entire post text is "Actually Radvylf's reputation is what keeps me from doing stupid stuff, not the other way around." :P

I got tired of trying to program NP/SP to work correctly when the network was doing weird stuff, so I used a neural network. It seems to have picked up some stuff from us.

3:27 AM
Is the main site similar to the chat in culture?

Goddamn it, I never expected Redwolf of all people to invent Skynet :/

@forest I mean, as much as you can be with the strict requirements that our site has for challenges and solutions, I guess

@forest Not really. Compared to most other SE sites, we're much more "fun", but stuff that isn't a "proper" post is closed very quickly

Ah.

there was a historical epoch of and whatnot but we're pretty serious now outside of like not-too-serious koth and cnr posts

3:31 AM
And the odd joke in challenge text

of course it's hard to compare to other se sites since this is barely the same format

I would be in favor of a bit more fun, but whenever what happens, every time after the first it's just not funny. EmoWolf, code trolling, fetching the answer from the internet, making a language that does it in zero bytes, etc.

whats emowolf

it was an entry in an old koth that just killed itself round 1 iirc

It was a KotH submission that insta-killed itself

3:33 AM
ah ok

And also the inspiration for my next pfp, after I stop needing the Ukraine one

fun fact: emowolf was not the worst entry in that koth :P

3:35 AM
i think emowolf is a good example to discuss here because you can have legitimate koth bots that lie somewhere on a spectrum between optimized to win and literally suicidal

Emowolf ended up 25/42

@UnrelatedString Especially early KotH answers in low-barrier-to-entry ones, which just return the same move every turn, or move randomly

yeah
it's both important for having bots for better bots to play against and for just setting the tone so to speak

(Though it does get a bit annoying if 40/60 submissions are just return 6.41404016; // This is currently what's optimal as of any time between now and five minutes from now
Though I'd argue KotHs that allow those to be effective are bad KotHs anyway

3:39 AM
I like that
Also gotta love when your teacher gets annoyed that you reported him to the principal and drops your grade on an assignment in retaliation

I guess "suddenly going to have to quit due to health reasons in exactly 18 days" means you don't really care too much about grading fairly lol

what the actual fuck is happening at your school

A lot, and I'm pretty sure the stuff I know about is only the tip of the iceberg
I do know that roughly half of the teachers this year have already resigned

@lyxal hello octal!

@lyxal I'm volunteering partly out of a sense of duty, not really because I especially want to be an RO. I'm not worried about not feeling good for months.

@Ginger that's my only concern, especially since another one or two non RO active users are mods

@hyper-neutrino Why is that a concern?

@pxeger I figured you'd be okay with it, but I'm talking about emanresuA and I

However, it seems that with the addition of 3 more we will have at least 1 RO online at all times, and usually 2 or more

2:06 PM
another idea is we go through with the election and if the votes are close we just do all 3, which has even happened for mod elections

If I win the election, my first RO action will just be to add whoever lost as well

do new ROs have to take the ROath and swear allegiance to the ROrder of the ROwners?

@pxeger it hardly is - just a bit unusual for there to be more or as many ROs as not, but i suppose the vyxal room has proven even if everyone is an RO it works

@Ginger yep, the HippROcratic ROath
you have to swear on a hROly book

@Ginger You might want to consider making a room for Makina
You tend to post a lot of stream-of-consciousness type messages about it here, which makes it hard to find all of that in one place (and adds clutter for people who aren't as interested in it)

5:27 PM
@pxeger ATO has copy-to-clipboard functionality for CMC and posts, but it'd be really nice with a simple [link text!](url) one too for serious things like SO.

5:37 PM
Well, starting on RTO again
I'm actually going to try to use git this time
I'm making my own framework for RTO's front-end

1 hour later…
6:44 PM
@Adám To some extent, I don't want ATO to be used for serious things, because then it will become a serious maintenance burden
But the reason I haven't added that feature is because the permalink auto-updates in the URL bar, and I think []() is simple enough to type yourself

Fair enough, but what will the standard link text be? "Attempt this online!"‽

yeah, that too: I don't think "Attempt this online" is a very intelligible link for people not in the know, but "Try it online" isn't a good link for code golfers, because it isn't TIO
so I thought I'd just let you pick your own link text when you write it

Hence my dissatisfaction with the ATO name.
It is easier to rely on something opinionated than come up with something new.

The best option might be to change it to "ATO" with no acronymic meaning

"Try it on ATO!"

6:49 PM
I was going to suggest making it a backronym but the best I could come up with is Action Try Online, which isn't great

A Trogramming Oanguage

"All this online!" (when adding a link after a longer code block).
"Apply it online!" (when speaking about a function definition).

@pxeger How about Yet Another Online Runner?
