Ah, that's because it's a Ruby symbol, right?

Yes

@Poke I'm just saying they've almost become the same thing over and over again, just requiring you to print different outputs.

@TheBitByte Do you think the same is true for challenges too?

@El'endiaStarman usually we use SNR instead of NSR :)

@KritixiLithos your joke has not passed unnoticed. lol

4:11 PM
@flawr I did think about writing "signal to noise" but it felt odd.

@El'endiaStarman Mathematically speaking, all finite sequences have infinitely many valid nth terms, if I remember correctly.

@TheBitByte Uh, how is that relevant?

@TheBitByte You try way too hard to sound clever in here.
6

@El'endiaStarman You should read behind the lines, I'm just saying challenges can sometimes be boring if they're not done correctly, and it's kind of the same with challenges, which I've personally gotten tired of.

@TheBitByte In here and pretty much on Stack Exchange in general, if you need people to "read between the lines" to get your meaning, you've failed at communicating clearly.
@TheBitByte What distinguishes and challenges? They're both instances of "output this pattern". What makes the former more interesting than the latter?

4:21 PM
@El'endiaStarman You're deflecting now, you've not answered anything I said.

@TheBitByte You haven't really answered my questions either.

@El'endiaStarman Both can become dull challenges when they're done incorrectly.

@TheBitByte That's true for every kind of challenge though.
What's the issue with challenges specifically?

@El'endiaStarman I was just saying it's more true for these specific types of challenges. This is just my personal opinion, anyways, and I'm not forcing anybody else to accept it.

(For what it's worth, I don't find them as interesting either; I was just curious as to what your reasoning was.)

4:25 PM
@El'endiaStarman There exists strings of arbitrarily large Kolmogorov complexity.

@TheBitByte A similar statement holds true for sequences.
Do you find sequences more interesting than strings?

@El'endiaStarman Which I why I'd like to see more creative challenges, not just the usual ones already there.

@TheBitByte Personal opinions can be valuable, especially if they're backed up with solid reasoning that may potentially lead to an improvement in the quality of the site.
@TheBitByte What, in your opinion, distinguishes the creative KC challenges from the dull ones?

@TheBitByte Graphical KC challenges are pretty rare, so that alone makes the challenge of outputting the G in Google's logo much more interesting. Are there any text-only KC challenges you particularly like? Also, the rickroll lyrics challenge was one of the early ones, and has been a dupe target for many other challenges with the same idea. A recent example would support your point better.
@TheBitByte That challenge has a different purpose than most. Most challenges invite competition, but catalog challenges are meant simply to collect examples in many different languages. True, the core is not all that interesting, but it's not really meant to be.

4:40 PM
What are the three members of the SE mega trio with their own domains?

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC Stack Overflow, Server Fault, and Super User, I think.

SO, SU and server fault
Ninja

Thanks!

Askubuntu :p

Ask Ubuntu is huge, but it's not one of the three

4:42 PM
We should close ask ubuntu as a duplicate of stack overflow and unix & linux.
3

So much this

hey
nonono

Yo, @Shog9, can you dupe hammer ask ubuntu as a duplicate of stack overflow and unix & linux?
We just need 5 close votes

And while we're at it, can we stop posting vim questions on SO, SU, AU, and U&L?

Has anyone here ever successfully used MinGW and the ncurses port? I'm using the 32bit libs from invisible-island.net/ncurses/#download_mingw - but ld just skips them as incompatible.

4:44 PM
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC There have been meta discussions, blog posts, and even voting/polls, and as much as I'd like to see Ask Ubuntu closed, it doesn't seem happening any time soon.

SE maintains strict vigilance over communities having overlapping interests - except for the stupid ask ubuntu

@mınxomaτ Assuming you have Windows 10, have you tried the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)?

Tiramisu, powered by Stack Overflow.

@TheBitByte Are you for real right now.

4:45 PM
why the hate

@mınxomaτ To be fair, they haven't really been in chat much over the last month...

@MartinEnder sugar overflow

@mınxomaτ Well, I'm not a Linux user, so I don't know. Windows is the king, after all, in desktop marketshare.

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC That's not true at all. All question of Ask Different and Unix & Linux would be on topic on Super User.

@Fatalize that too

4:46 PM
@MartinEnder If I join Tiramisu.SE, do I get Tiramisu? :P

@El'endiaStarman They have been informed of this by wat two days ago.

@mınxomaτ Oh, I missed that.

@Dennis Look at question migration.

Also the constant posting of irrelevant stuff in response to specific questions is getting really annoying.

@mınxomaτ OK.

4:49 PM
@flawr See also this very good observation
It might be wiser to multiply the entropy with the length of the string. Otherwise one can add arbitrary many copies of a single character to bring H_0 arbitrarily close to 0. — Angs 4 mins ago

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC The guy kicked me out, he's afraid of talking about the topic I guess. :D

@TheBitByte just take a cool down, act normal, and don't do that
We all make those kinds of mistakes.

@TheBitByte No, he specifically requested that messages in that room be kept to that room's topic, and you blatantly disregarded his request.

Let's all stop talking about it and meta-it and meta-meta-it and get over it.
@MartinEnder Is it webscale?
@MartinEnder did you make that?

it's big data and yes I made that

5:04 PM
@MartinEnder how'd you get accurate SO logo?
Did you omnomonom it down yet?

either I'm very patient, or I've got one of those cappuccino stencils.

(^ a perfect example of civilized netspeak)

also no, it's just sitting in the fridge right now.

@TheBitByte: The main lesson here is: don't be so antagonistic. Your messages rarely seem to have any constructive purpose, and that's a problem. Antagonistic and unconstructive attitudes and messages are unwelcome in TNB and the SE chat network (and sites) as a whole.

Do we need to get ppcg.se domain?

5:07 PM
...

@mınxomaτ I can't tell what that was a response to.

5:22 PM
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC That name appears taken yet unused.

@PhiNotPi Then contact the owner and buy it.

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC Why not do so yourself?

@El'endiaStarman Are you having a bad day?

Well done on demonstrating the very aspect I criticized.

@TheBitByte Please read through this:

Q: We need to talk about Chat

mınxomaτI would start this post with something along the lines of "without naming names", but I think it's time to pinpoint the issues we currently face in chat and take action. This is a follow-up to The state of chat. This post aims to identify specific problems and specific problematic users. Because...

5:30 PM
@TheBitByte Genuine question: are you at all interested in improving the behaviour which has earned you several kicks and suspensions and which has been pointed out to you many times?

@MartinEnder I'll do that when I'm not being called names every five minutes. Try sitting in a room with everybody swearing at you and they wouldn't be a tiny bit surprised that you swore back.

> The main lesson here is: don't be so antagonistic

@MartinEnder Is this a pancake flipping icon?

hey, question for you all: if you were to hookup to my KoTHComm, would you prefer instructions on how to clone/organize your project, and the different modules you can use, or would you prefer a commented, premade "sample project" you can branch off of?

Q: Blueprint a sestina

NinjaBearMonkeyA sestina is a format of poem that follows an interesting pattern that we can generate. It has six stanzas of six lines each, where the last words of each line in the first stanza make up the line endings in each successive stanza, rotated in a set pattern. (There's also a three-line stanza at th...

@TheBitByte I don't see anyone calling you names, unless you mean that some people have complained about your continued off-topic messages and pointless arguments for the sake of arguing. When someone tells you that your chat behaviour is being disruptive, then it might be better to consider if they have a point instead of escalating the derailing behaviour and blaming everyone else.

@MartinEnder s/someone/like everyone/ >_>

@MartinEnder I don't see you much on chat here, which might be why you didn't notice how I was being treated like a special snowflake that has murdered somebody and deserves to be punished. But it doesn't matter, right? Nobody cares.

@Dennis probably obvious question but will TIO v2 have different REST interface?
@Fatalize It's okay, you don't need to sound smart, just blame it on hooves

@Downgoat what is SIoT/ISoT/IoST/IoTS?

5:45 PM
@Downgoat I'm not sure what that means.

@NathanMerrill a sample project (but ideally both=)
@Optimizer Do you know these guys? b.thumbs.redditmedia.com/QVC7_M71_z5RmJoO.png

@Dennis i.e. will cheddar.tryitonline.net/cgi-bin/backend?code=whatever still work?

No.

ah ok thanks
@flawr :O optimizer has identical twin

@flawr thanks :P

5:48 PM
And it doesn't really work now either. Communication between frontend and backend uses POST requests.

Q: Why don't you grow up?

fpg1503Why don't you grow up? In the past week a meme involving the young actor Aaron Bailey became trending in most Brazilian social networks. Entitled "why don't you grow up" it consists in repeating a sentence replacing its vowels with is (it's a bit more complicated than that, I'll explain below). ...

The main reason I'm changing it is that the current method uses base64 encoded whatever, while v2 will transmit raw binary data, which is easier on the bandwidth.

even for client -> server?
won't params get all messed up
btw I'm getting a:
> Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 405 (Method Not Allowed)

It won't use name=value pairs.

you have any idea what might cause this?

5:52 PM
Are you using a GET request?

no POST
ah i see it was a problem on my side
I didn't include a protocol so it assumed entire thing was the path

Yeah, I was just going to tell you that.
What are to trying to do if I may ask?

trying to do a cheddar thing with TIO

Yeah, I guessed that part. :P

5:56 PM
hm :/ maybe i could just setup subdomain on cheddar to redirect to TIO
that would probably be best

@Downgoat Okay now this is enough. Please don't pollute the room. There are other chatrooms designed for stuff like this.

@Downgoat You should change your name to Downgaot :)

@TheBitByte I just want to remind you that you did the same exact thing until a mod trashed your messages.

gaot spek iz ony spek

6:43 PM
@Zacharee1 Exactly. Then I stopped, and now I'm asking the rest to stop too.

@TheBitByte please stop being salty, if you refuse to stop annoying behavior, do we really need to get mods to stop you?
this is the room designed for PPCG-related discussion

@Downgoat Oh, so I am annoying, but your little "gaot spek" isn't? Listen, I'm not in the mood for arguments.

And this is needed for a challenge @TheBitByte

@TheBitByte You were far more annoying that gaot spek in the past
And gaot spek is not rare in TNB too

I don't think you have the authority to decide that it's suddenly not allowed

The IEEE Standard for Floating-Point Arithmetic (IEEE 754) is a technical standard for floating-point computation established in 1985 by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The standard addressed many problems found in the diverse floating point implementations that made them difficult to use reliably and portably. Many hardware floating point units now use the IEEE 754 standard. The standard defines: arithmetic formats: sets of binary and decimal floating-point data, which consist of finite numbers (including signed zeros and subnormal numbers), infinities, and special...

@LuisMendo I think it might be relatively easy to convert from a "binary markov chain" coin (where the current probability depends on the result of the previous flip) to a normal bernoulli factory.

@Downgoat pleeeease?

Since it can be broken down into two separate I.I.D. sources.

@PhiNotPi Yes, but that would create a new one.

gtg

when people specify which encoding their language uses, do the files for the language actually have to be written with that encoding?
sorry that's really badly phrased

@PhiNotPi If what you do is take the odd and even-indexed values, I think that does not assure independence. Independence in a Markov chain asymptotically tends to 0 with the index difference between the two observations, but never reaches 0, in general

7:37 PM
@Flp.Tkc yes, anytime an answer claims to be "7 bytes" but actually contains 7 Unicode characters, the "real source file" has some other encoding and is actually 7 bytes long.
@LuisMendo I use the current value to determine which subcategory the next value goes into.
Any time the current flip is tails, the next flip goes into the first category (similar for if current flip is heads).
since any time the current flip is heads, for example, the next flip is IID with respect to all other flips which occurred after a heads.

@PhiNotPi i understand that, but does the language have to actually handle files with that encoding or can you just use standard text files that would theoretically in the specified encoding be 1 byte per character?

Your interpreter has to actually work with files in that encoding
What a lot of languages do (including my own golflang) is default to the smaller encoding, but allow a command-line flag for UTF-8 encoding for convenience

thanks, that's a good idea
