Let's not start an AoE war now, please. AoE2 is better, AoE3 is only the graphics. AoE2 is better. The end.
2
@mbomb007 Let's end with the fact that Microsoft suck ;)
if there is a definitive best choice, does that really mean that there's strategy?
THERE IS A WHOLE LOT OF STRATEGY WITH AOE3
@mbomb007 Except the Chu Ko Nu. OP.
Please don't yell, even during one of our silly "this is better" spats.
3
16:02
@KritixiLithos There's only 2 game modes. And the Rock Paper Scissors works better in AoE 2
Did you even read the Quorra article?
Besides, all AoE games are objectively inferior to the original Sim City.
@mbomb007 What's Rock Paper Scissors in AOE2?
Sim City 3000
@KritixiLithos Read the Quorra post
I read it
Sim City 3000 is also objectively worse than Sim City ;)
16:03
@mbomb007 Do you judge by game modes? SMB only has one mode, still is the classical Super Mario game that everyone loved. I don't think that you need a second mode just because a game is a retro-RPG.
vim is better than emacs
nano is better than emacs
@Geobits Sim City 2000 or gtfo
vim is better than nano
gedit is better than emacs
16:04
anyways, I've mentioned this game before, but I feel like you guys would enjoy it: Check out Concrete Jungle. One of the best deck builder games I've played
@TimmyD Ha, okay 2000 was pretty good :P
Microsoft Notepad is better than Emacs
gedit is better than vim
@EriktheGolfer What? We're comparing two games of the same series. You can't bring SMB into an AOE discussion. AOE isn't even an RPG.
@EriktheGolfer ah typo
I think you mean vim is better than gedit
16:05
@TuxCopter What I wrote. That.
@mbomb007 I still think the point still stands. The existence of multiple modes is meaningless IMO.
I've never used gedit
@KritixiLithos It's like emacs but worse
@mbomb007 Please, don't edit your pinged messages thrice. Twice is good.
@NathanMerrill Nah. Regicide was great.
16:05
@TuxCopter You know that gedit is useful when you golf in ///, right?
@EriktheGolfer Why?
@EriktheGolfer That's good. Because if you view the history, I only edited twice. :P
Whninja'd
You can type / and `\` in vim too
16:06
But you can't type \\ in chat visibly
DAMN
Multiple modes is a fine point of comparison in like games. If the games are pretty similar, but one has more things to do, I can see how you might prefer that.
It's not a make-or-break, but it's a pro (most of the time).
@mbomb007 I meant including the posting. So, if that's how you take it, then, for me at the very least, it's one edit.
Oct 28 at 17:49, by Geobits
@betseg Isn't markdown fun? :P
Recicide was a really fun mode.
@TuxCopter Because you golf faster, so you can ninja others!
16:07
MarioKart Wii is the best
> golf faster
Have you seen me golfing in ///?
citation needed
citation: experience
And anyway /// is a language used by two persons on PPCG, so ninja'ing with a /// answer isn't really hard :P
16:08
@EriktheGolfer No original research
@TuxCopter Martin Ender, daHugLenny, Erik the Golfer, possibly others.... it's three at the very least :P
@mbomb007 Dang, I miss playing Regicide on Arena.
@EriktheGolfer Well, three, this don't change the fact that your citation is incorrect
@EriktheGolfer et al is still original research
16:10
@TuxCopter Common sense: If you need to press 10 key strokes every time you just want to search and replace, invest in better equipment. So, gedit is better for that task at the very least. Vim is golfable tho :P
:%s/x/y/g
Not really hard
As I said, ten keystrokes (including Return)!
And otherwise to duplicate a line you do Yp, so it's less keystrokes tahn anything for this tsk
And it you find annoying to type this, you can make a macro/remap
Nah, I have golfing to do, so I don't trust terminals nevertheless.
Watching people argue about text editors is kinda like watching people fight over whose poison ivy rash is better.
4
16:12
> I don't trust terminals
hmm... WAT
IntelliJ Idea is the best
> button->button->text field->x->text field->y->button
In Gedit
Still, it's worse than gedit.
ಠ_ಠ
vim is the most powerful editor in the world
16:13
@Geobits Agree. Also, Notepad++ 4lyfe.
that's it
^^^
so now open a terminal, run sudo apt-get install vim, run vimtutor and gain productivity
No, IntelliJ Idea is the best
vim is hard to learn and you forget it in 1 second so i wont use it even if its powerful
16:13
@TimmyD I love me some np++ on the rare occasions I find myself on windows.
@EriktheGolfer Not if you pratice
@TimmyD s/Notepad\+\+/vim/ FTFY
Microsoft Notepad iz teh bezt
You're not supposed to say "FTFY" when you break things :/
NO! NO! NO!
@betseg tru
16:14
This is turning into "My text editor is better than yours because I like mine better than yours" :P
vim ftw
> Turning into
Vim Vim Vim! Take over Vim!
IntelliJ Idea for life
@ETHproductions Isn't that always the case? ;)
16:15
@Geobits I don't break things, I fix them
@TuxCopter You broke the saying :-/
I think there should be a chat filter that automatically moves messages containing "vim" or whatever other editors into the trash.
2
@mbomb007 ಠ_ಠ
brb, working on bot
@mbomb007 What about "Vimgolf" then? TNB is the place for that.
16:16
@TimmyD Before it was "Mine is better because it has feature X", now it's "Mine ftw"
vim Mine ftw
^ case in point
yeah i saw it the first time you said it thanks anyways huh
IntelliJ is the best because it has intelligent auto-completion
@TuxCopter Minesweeper ftw
16:16
vimsweeper ftw
aptitudesweeper ftw
yes aptitude has minesweeper fr
Vinesweeper, you have seven seconds to solve it, then it starts over.
@mbomb007 That's only playable for computers
Depends on the size of the board
@TuxCopter @EriktheGolfer Could you guys stop? All this flamewarring is making me embarrassed to call myself a vimmer. >_>
2
16:18
^. I've beaten Beginner in 3 seconds
@mbomb007 My record as an 8-year-old was something around 11 seconds for a (non-lucky) 9x9 board. Gotta start working on those skills again
@DrMcMoylex if you are embarrassed to golf, then...
@DrMcMoylex Love the username :D
@ETHproductions 40s for Intermediate. 130s for Advanced
16:20
I had a 40s Intermediate once, though I'm not sure I ever finished Advanced
@ETHproductions hehe, thanks. It was indirectly from you
Advanced just pisses me off because there's more opportunity for a coin flip to show up :/
Although, technically anything after Windows Minesweeper for XP doesn't count, because it gives you a zero on your first click.
And even the XP version is banned in ranked, because of the cycles.
I loved starting on Advanced, then setting the number of mines to 10. I had myself plenty of 0s runs that way
@mbomb007 Really? I don't think I've ever the windows version played post-XP. That's silly.
16:23
WTF on Win10 I can't play Minesweeper without a XBox account
@Geobits You said Beginner was 9x9. That's post XP I think.
12/10 Microsoft
@TuxCopter Want a link to the original Minesweeper download?
@mbomb007 No I didn't?
Yes please
16:24
@mbomb007 Download? You can just search for minesweeper online.
@mbomb007 I said it, and I've only ever played on XP.
@EriktheGolfer And get a lot of bad flash games 20/10
Wrong person
It might have been 10x10 though. Memory's a little foggy
16:24
Did the cheat code still work in MS XP?
Yeah, I tried it a few times
@EriktheGolfer Lame.
If it's online, it's probably fake.
Or a clone.
I know, but you relive the memory. minesweeperonline.com is good, no flash.
@EriktheGolfer How do one play?
16:27
@TuxCopter are you on mobile or something?
@EriktheGolfer This site doesn't even load for me.
No
I am on computer
It loads for me
@mınxomaτ It loads for me
No button works
Except the app store thingy
16:28
It works for me
New challenge idea: create a working Minesweeper clone with the shortest code possible
@ETHproductions sounds like a dup[e
@ETHproductions Probably already been done.
That's what I thought
> dup[e
16:29
@TuxCopter sorry, typo. i dont like editing pinged messages just for typos.
11
Q: Working Minesweeper

EAKAESimilar to generating minesweeper grids, although the challenge is to make a working minesweeper grid. This will be longer code than normal (I think). more information on minesweeper. Minesweeper is a logic game found on most OS's. The goal of the game is to determine where the mines are on...

@ETHproductions Also depends what features are required. I created a clone in VB.NET that has the same images
load_page("http://minesweeperonline.com")
@KritixiLithos remove the s in https for a 1 byte golf
@KritixiLithos -1 standard loophole
16:30
I just realized! AOE 2 is Turing complete!
What does Turing complete mean?
Being able to compute anything computable
16:31
It must be. The scenario editor has lots of triggers available
@TuxCopter That doesn't make sense to me
Oh it load now
@KritixiLithos Why?
@EriktheGolfer What's with the 100 tabs O_o
@TuxCopter It's a weird definition
@EriktheGolfer That's not a bug.
16:32
@ETHproductions It's boring to close tabs :) Also, I need them for language docs interpreters etc. (im a true golfer).
> I'm a true golfer
Not pretentious
@mbomb007 Oh true, I was confused...
@EriktheGolfer Your browser can be golfed by closing 100 tabs.
10
@TuxCopter I'm a !0 golfer
@mbomb007 And then, I will open them again... no good.
And they're 53 tabs!
16:35
Too many. If you haven't used it in the last 10 minutes, it should probably be closed.
A browser is the only situation where spaces > tabs.
@mbomb007 No, they are docs that I might use the next hour, they're just so many to close them. Please, live with it!
@mbomb007 Not the only. Spaces > tabs always
2
Argh I was getting in to the bus when I saw the screenshot's thumbnail, then I locked my phone, sat down, and now I can't see the screenshot.
@TuxCopter Spaces fans, YES!
@betseg I removed it because I discovered it was just cluttering the room.
16:38
@mbomb007 Hahaha
I'm in space
@mbomb007 reply coming in:
> I was bossy and monstrous, and I am genuinely sorry.
> I'm in space
@EriktheGolfer i want to see it :(
@TuxCopter I'M IN SPAAAAAACE!
@betseg I still have it :) but it's useless.
also, it seems mbomb007 is a tab fan instead, why?
Because he's sensible, obviously.
16:41
Tabs are bad
Only if you're a bad person.
I am a penguin not a person
So logically, tabs are not bad.
Tabs are bad
Tab fans, we did another space/tab war now? codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/91860/… spaces won.
16:42
Tabs are easier than spaces
ಠ_ಠ
Appeal to authority: Dennis uses tabs, and Dennis isn't wrong.
4
@KritixiLithos You know you can't use tabs in SE, right? Spaces win.
kaboom
@EriktheGolfer But only on SE.
16:43
@EriktheGolfer You can paste tabbed code into SE just fine. It converts them because browsers are stupid, but that's it.
SE isn't everything
ono Alex use spaces
And he left
It's a reference to a meme
Yes I know the meme
I was here longer than you
16:49
yudodis
@Geobits What does Alex use?
Spaces
May 15 at 22:25, by Alex A.
The only dealbreaker for me when it comes to standards is indenting with tabs. That's why I'll never be able to learn Go. :P
Go has significant whitespaces?
Wait, Go's standard is tabs?
Uninstalling go compiler
16:54
@ Mego go to google and make go use spaces :p
^ plz
If anyone has a few minutes, could you please give feedback on my sandboxed challenge?
Why not underscores for indentation?
Would you call that "undentation"?
def f(x):
____return x * 2
huh no thx
17:01
> Sorry: IndentationError: expected an indented block (prog.py, line 2)
Or fill the space with ಠ
def f(x):
ಠಠಠಠreturn x * 2
still no
@ETHproductions I have no overview in polyglots, so I can't say whether this is a dupe, but it sounds fun.
@ETHproductions Gave you feedback in the form of a comment
Regarding scoring: Why don't you use the number of languages as the primary criterion, and in case of a tie, use the length as a criterion.
I think this method would be a greater incentive to strive for more languages.
17:03
^ I agree with @flawr
> Maybe have a separate leaderboard for polyglots with different number of languages. For example, a separate leaderboard for answers with 2 languages, another one for answers with 3 languages, and so on
@flawr Ah yes, that would make for an extremely polyglot-y challenge. Perhaps I should add more dishes so that it's less likely that a solution will implement all of them.
@KritixiLithos Yes, thank you. I think that might be a good idea
Ouch, that was a very loud ping
BOOP
fizz
That's why I have my speaker on mute
17:07
Please, not again
I'm actually listening to some educational videos on my headphones, so things can get pretty loud
oops. sorry!
All's forgiven :)
ping-attack!
It's better now
@Maltysen That is just a matter of convention, you can put any factor you want there, it just results in a stretches/squishes the whole thing. If you got the 2pi there you do not need it in the "normalization" factor, and vice versa. (You're just stretching/squishing the whole thing.)

Q: How many times does a number appear in a sequence?

Kritixi LithosThe program should take input the number, the start of the range and the end of the range, and output how many times the number appears between the start and end of the range, inclusive. Both programs and functions are allowed. Example Inputs For example: //Input example 1 3,1,100 //Input exam...

@El'endiaStarman Haha=)
@flawr and Kritixi: I've added a list of the most similar challenges to the sandbox post. Could you please take a look and see if any look like they might be dupes?
Thanks for not pinging me :)
The second question in the list of similar challenges is totally different from yours, in my opinion, because it requires you to perform different tasks, rather than output different strings
Yes, I agree. I think it's safe to rule out that one.
When I read your question, I heard the hooting of a monkey. Infinity is a mathematical concept. The representation of infinity in a computer is a number. Counting down from Infinity is as impossible as (it seems) you understanding this comment. Counting down from a representation of infinity is something a clown might think is interesting. — DwB 2 hours ago
^^ Is that a serious comment or sarcasm? I can't tell... Anyone?
17:45
Seems like sarcasm to me
Dangit ... if the range was limited to 50,000 items, PowerShell would be beating Python/JavaScript ... :-/
It wouldn't be fair if I changed the rules now
@StewieGriffin That's not sarcasm. Your response is
Thank you for sharing! I'll read up on infinity and see if can grasp the concept. — Stewie Griffin 2 mins ago
Re Kritixi: The fourth challenge I mentioned seems like the one that is the closest to a dupe.
(that's this challenge)
@mınxomaτ It would have been moreso if he added "meanwhile, you read up on this question and see if you can grasp that concept" :P
17:47
ahaha @StewieGriffin that DwB created an account just to make that comment
101 1
pretty good stuff there
@ETHproductions First I'm gonna have dinner:)
@flawr Turkey? ;)
@Poke That account had 21k rep on SO.
Created an account with ppcg*
@Geobits I wrote almost those exact words, but removed them before posting...
To be honest, I was unsure if it was sarcasm and didn't want to post: "You didn't understand the question", just to prove that I didn't understand the comment (as predicted).
17:53
It's not hard to predict that people won't understand when you're babbling.
@Geobits I'm sorry. I didn't understand.
