There's a feature that allows you to define arbitrary conditions for use in pattern matches
It might be incompatbile with the multiple definitions.

Question: What in the world has happened to our November 1 design?
4
13 hours ago, by ASCII-only
@ΛεγίωνΜάμμαλϠΟΗʹ Answer: Wait 13 hours and 25 minutes then ask again

@ΛεγίωνΜάμμαλϠΟΗʹ it was lie

D:

D:

12:01 AM
There's only 4 hours (my time) left for the design.

@mınxomaτ can you do one for osabie or jelly?

But yeah, that message was posted exactly 13 hours and 25 minutes to the second after @ASCII-only's response
(This one 2016-11-02T00:00:44Z)

@Downgoat "troll" sounds better

@downg will you start working on ccobra one day?

12:05 AM
yes

Or do you understood Python + braces = blasphemy

i wil nevr understoof
python is actualy decent language with braces
it looks 100000000000000000000000x better

like I use coffescript for a version of js with significant whitespace (also comprehensions and for-each lops)

> python is actualy decent language
Yay!
downgaot approves

+1 for correctly spelling gaots name

12:07 AM
My keyboard is forked brb

@TuxCopter borked?

Damn autocorrect

we need a slang dictionary to add to our keyboard lists

Totally

wait halloween is over @Downgoat plz revert confusion
i'm fixing mine too

12:11 AM
oh crap ok
@trichoplax see above

NBC?
I don't know what NBC is

nm
american tv channel

Ah ok

tomato, eggplant, and potato are the same genus

@ΛεγίωνΜάμμαλϠΟΗʹ It appeared for like a minute and then it disappeared
We're thinking it was a prank
All Geobits's fault obviously

12:19 AM
@quartata Yeah, sure.

who's up to pinging the cm's?

@quartata When you want a design so bad you're starting to see things, it's time to consult a doctor :P

Question: what should I call the operator that checks if A is instance of B?
instance-checking operator?

instanceof operator.

Can't do

12:21 AM
Why re-invent the wheel's name.

no
I don't mean in the language
I can't title the page Instance of Operator

@Downgoat Yes you can. Instance-of Operator

oh ok
+1

Look, I don't know if Geobits was lying about seeing it but I most definitely saw it. I even found it in my cache. I'll sign an oath, take a polygraph test, whatever it takes for you guys to believe me

@quartata WAIT YOU FOUND IN CACHE
PLS SHARE PICTURE :3

12:25 AM
I found some of the assets but not all. I posted the upvote button but there were... naysayers
Look back in the transcript

I swear I don't know what's going on in my language anymore.

@quartata Why is the button asset stored on it's own? Aren't all assets on one SVG for all sites?

I've got two totally unrelated commands interacting for no apparent reason. .-.

Yeah they're normally stored on one PNG sprite sheet
This seemed to be different for some reason
Although only the buttons are on a sheet.

@quartata i cannot find?
¬_¬

12:28 AM
The rest are separate individual images normally

@Downgoat It was this morning. Look a little harder

is this a joke

@mınxomaτ Browser I was using at the time did not support SVG

hey look guys, SE releasaed our design, here's a screenshot of vote button:

12:30 AM
I assume there was a fallback in place

What browser doesn't support SVG?

Old ones. I have not updated firefox in a long time on this computer and I was using it to test something else

Obviously our vote buttons will be based on Geobits's image; either you Geobits a post or anti-Geobits the post.
It's only logical.

@quartata Old firefox supports SVG just fine.

12:32 AM
@VTCAKAVSMoACE our vote buttons are already geobits and upside-down geobits. I think it's time the goats get a turn

Firefox 2?

@Downgoat I Geobits this idea.

;_________;

@quartata So you had this computer over 10 years and never updated the browser? I don't believe you.
> Firefox 2 uses version 1.8 of the Gecko layout engine for displaying web pages. The release contained many new features not found in Firefox 1.5, including improved support for Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) and JavaScript 1.7, as well as user interface changes.
Also lies.

The computer I was on actually only supports Firefox 2; as far as I know there was never a newer IRIX release

12:35 AM
So what? Even pre-FF2 supports the basic SVG markup SE uses.

@mınxomaτ Must have been compiled without it; blame the people who made the tardist I used

Irix supports at least Firefox 3.0.19

Wow seriously? I for real did not know that.

12:37 AM
I still call BS on FF2 not supporting SVG. Please show me the fallback image you are assuming on any other SE site.

It takes like 10 minutes to boot up my O2; must I?

Anonymous
Your troll failed, RIP

No need, just search the resource. Since you had the cache image, you have to have an idea about the resource path.

Keyboard fail

BTW, this would be our non-beta sprite URL: cdn.sstatic.net/Sites/codegolf/img/sprites.svg?v=63305114dc86

12:39 AM
The path 404s now. You wouldn't believe me.

@quartata Use another site then that has a custom design.

Well I lasted 8 hours. Good fun. gg
3

Our current spritesheet is http://cdn.sstatic.net/Sites/beta/img/sprites.svg?v=63305114dc86. From http://cdn.sstatic.net/Sites/math/img/sprites.svg?v=370a57d8c8f2 for Math.SE, I guess "beta" is changed to the site URL for a final design.
@quartata no re
pls

The joke is over. You can stop taking it seriously

No that last one was a serious comment
That will probably be the actual path.

12:42 AM
I made the upvote icon in Word. It was actually really hard.
Do I get a +1 for an elaborate tale?

Anonymous
@quartata ಠ_ಠ

Not really. That icon was ridiculous to start with.

No but you get a +1 for the bad upvote icon

I used a superscript trick to move the pipe up and to the center of the caret

Anonymous
> You can stop taking it seriously [...] It was actually really hard

12:44 AM
The GIMP probably would have been easier

Anonymous
I guess I have no choice but to name the next iteration Really

@Mego no pls

> Really 5 bytes

what are you talking about? I found the sprites.xml in my cache
sprites.svg*

Aw man. Cluster headaches are really something I could live without. I'm glad I have the mildest form, but recently exceeded the point where non-prescription meds have any effect. That's slightly worrying...

see a doctor?

@quartata you should have stuck with the "they must have left it uncompiled because its in-progress" defense

No one would have ever believed that, pls

That was great fun. Thanks to all the people who fell for it and took me seriously even if only for a couple minutes.
@Geobits Thanks for playing the supporting role in that great PPCG drama
And now I shall eat

Like I said earlier:
6 hours ago, by Geobits
@TuxCopter I would be willing to swear under penalty of perjury that it was not in any way an organized troll.

Anonymous
Yeah Geobits's trolling is much cleverer

1:05 AM
Aw, I didn't mean it like that :(

Anonymous
As someone who has seen (and fell for) many clever trolls, I can't give any credit to that one :P

@Geobits what's the next auspicious date you're forcasting?

web.archive.org has reported small changes in the all.css for this site in the past few months

Anonymous
@Maltysen December 1st, naturally

1:07 AM
Most seem to be random elements (not a CSS pro)

Anonymous
SE regularly does CSS tweaks to all sites

@Mego oh, are we literally just doing monthly now?
I thought they were specific dates that Geobits picks out of his ass

Anonymous
12 specific dates. The first of every month.

._.

@Geobits Sure but you did great improv

Anonymous
1:08 AM
But I think he started saying November 1st a few months prior last year

I mean, @DJMcMayhem did originally say Nov 1

@Mego yeah, I remember nov 1st, feb 1st, and april 1st

He's been saying 1st of October and November since 2014

At least we're no longer [basically still] in beta

@quartata Since I joined 08 Jan 2014, this checks out :P

1:12 AM
I think it was a little later than that but yeah you've been trolling us since time began
The Big Geobang
Or maybe The Big (Blown To) Bits

Aug 27th and Nov 27th both as well. It's not always the first of anything ;)

@ΛεγίωνΜάμμαλϠΟΗʹ Yeah, that was totally not me who came up with it. I was just repeating it
Oct 2 '14 at 14:27, by Geobits
In other news, they set the actual graduation date to November 1.

I'm looking for the "original", but it's surprisingly hard to find.

Anonymous
Isn't the original message linked in the meme post?

@Geobits does many memes have the link?
ninja'd

1:16 AM
CMC (): Find a mention of 1 Nov 2016 for site design that occurred before the previous answer. I'll start:
Oct 7 at 19:59, by DJMcMayhem
Well, we definitely are getting the full design soon. I heard a dev saying something about "November 1"

Anonymous
@quartata You should probably see a doctor

Anonymous
(I'm ashamed it took me 35 minutes to think of that joke)

The one linked in memes is from Sep 14 2014, but I thought there was something in August.

@Mego .....
Gross

@Mego >_<

1:24 AM
Lol

@ΛεγίωνΜάμμαλϠΟΗʹ Even restricted to November of this year, that's fairly easy to beat:
Feb 16 at 16:10, by Geobits
The way I heard it, we're "graduating" March 11, but the design and such will take until November 1.
More specific than usual as well.
They jumped the gun a bit on the graduation part though.

Well, that was upfront

did you ask them that?

> Okay Google -> Lumos

No, that's from Wikimedia Commons.

1:38 AM
@Downgoat Thanks for the reminder :)

1:53 AM
questoin: what does this even mean

str.isEmpty()

str != null

doesn't like either of those :/
idk

you should probably do both

this thing is dumb

1:54 AM
str != null && !str.isEmpty()

it requires a very specific string

str.equals("")

ok yeah that works i think

although, if you want to null safe, you should do "".equals(str)
but that reads weird

@Downgoat If that's right, then it's wrong. An empty string is definitely a value assigned to it :/

1:59 AM
ik but this lesson is dumb

I thought they changed the new sounds back in CS:GO??
Oh dear they're still terrible
I can't recognize any sounds. end my suffering

2:17 AM
I hope our design comes with a new soundtrack. I'm getting kinda tired of the current one.

@Dennis your edit looks totally different from what i was thinking of
i need to figure out what it's doing
and see if I can merge

2:34 AM
@Downgoat this is why C# > java, they provide a method just for that

@ASCII-only that is not good think

@Downgoat why not

@ASCII-only Java does? "".isEmpty()

C# has IsNullOrEmpty() IIRC

I saw this in HNQ and thought I might have to sign up to Seasoned Advice to comment, but thankfully the first commenter already said what needed to be:

Q: Is there any way to bring an egg to its natural state (not boiled) after you cook it?

SuhanyThis is probably a stupid question, but I'm curious now after I opened the refrigerator looking for eggs to make a cake and there was only one and it was cooked. Is there any way to undo that, whether at home or an industrial way?

2

2:53 AM
@ASCII-only True, but I can't remember the last time I had to actually check a String for null. That usually indicates a problem elsewhere. Or you're interfacing with terrible third-party code, of course ;)
So it's not like it's a huge burden to not have it.

Anonymous
@trichoplax There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful response

can someone pls halp me i think java is doing a stupid but it's probably me:
        ArrayList<String> except = Arrays.asList(new String[]{
            "Belize", "Cambodge", "Mexique", "Mozambique", "Zaire", "Zimbabwe"
        });
like such simple code
but such bork

Anonymous
Arrays.asList returns a List<?>, not an ArrayList<?>

oh

@Mego Did you see the first comment? That seems like a (slow) way that would work... I agree we don't yet know if there are quicker, more practical ways

Anonymous

Anonymous
I messed up the quote slightly :/

@trichoplax I'd argue that the egg isn't sufficient. Additional energy (and nutrients) are needed

Any other method would require additional energy as well.

@Downgoat What mego said.. But converting a list -> arraylist is easy enough.
ArrayList<String> arraylist = (ArrayList<String>) list;

@AshwinGupta are you sure that Arrays.asList returns an ArrayList?

3:08 AM
@NathanMerrill Well yes I agree with that. I wasn't suggesting using a chicken in a vacuum :)

@NathanMerrill no it doesn't it returns list

@AshwinGupta I mean the implementationt
not the interface
because if you just cast it like that, and its not actually an ArrayList, that'll throw an error

oh. Wait why?

@Downgoat also, this is way easier with Eclipse collections. Lists.mutable.of("Belize",...)
there are lots of classes that can implement List
LinkedList, ArrayList, you can have your own private class you return
but I just looked at the source code, and it does return an ArrayList
  @SafeVarargs
  @SuppressWarnings("varargs")
  public static <T> List<T> asList(T... a) {
      return new ArrayList<>(a);
  }

@NathanMerrill wow you are right. I learned something new today... Just tried it.
I suppose you could manually iterate through the list and place elements into arraylist

3:15 AM
@Mego The quote was only a word out from the later instances. I just didn't recognise it because it's been such a long time since I last read that story. It's very apt :)

Okay okay this still works though:
List<String> l = Arrays.asList(new String[]{"foo", "bar"});
ArrayList<String> ar = new ArrayList<String>(l);

Just wrap the function in an ArrayList constructor. No reason for an intermediate List.

Anonymous
@NathanMerrill That's not guaranteed, though. For best compatibility, assume it doesn't.

Anonymous
But yeah, new ArrayList<String>(Arrays.asList(new String[]{"foo", "bar"})) is the typical way of doing it

Q: Codegolf rules and boundaries

Right LegSo last time, I was hanging on codegolf, and came across the question Print the digital root, where one guy replied here with a one-byte code. Should I try my hand at making donuts or croissants?

3:50 AM
Definitely donuts

Anonymous
Donuts > croissants

doissants?

Anonymous
They can be a bit tricky though

Anonymous
In my experience, donuts are more sensitive to ingredient measurement errors than other baked goods. If you use too much or too little of any ingredient, you will be able to taste the difference.

If you want something vaguely similar to the layers of a croissant, but made of doughnut, you could try plaited doughnuts, like koeksisters

3:54 AM
@Mego True, but it's also not that easy to mess them up so badly they aren't still tasty :D

Anonymous
@Geobits Very true :)

Anonymous
On the other end of the spectrum is pizza. You can do basically anything to pizza and it will still turn out good. Even bad pizza is still good pizza.

Haha, yeah. Fails to rise? still good. Crunchy? Good. Foldable? Good.

@Mego I make pizza all the time :D But currently have no cheese :(

Maybe raw dough would be bad on pizza, but that's about it.

4:00 AM
Use marshmallow instead and make it a dessert pizza

My cheese/marshmallow drawer is empty

For shame

Prevention is better than cure: don't run out of cheese. Ever
In an emergency you can use plenty of sauce and fold into a calzone without cheese

Calzone without cheese? That's gotta be some sort of sin.

Perhaps I should have made that "dire emergency"

4:04 AM
@trichoplax Makes me think of those attempts to grow beef in a lab with no cow. I wouldn't mind eating cheese made like that but meat is weirder somehow.

I wasn't thinking that extreme. Just buying enough to not run out...

But then it goes bad. Someday there will exist an instant 3D beef/cheese/marshmallow printer that will solve such problems.

Keeping a herd of goats near the kitchen solves it too, once you learn to make cheese.
(cows take up too much room for indoors)

Vegan cheese is made from oil and water, and a little soya, which all keep well.

Vegan cheese isn't cheese though :P

4:07 AM
Cows also make inferior cheese

@Geobits Can the goats stack 2 or 3 high? That will save space.

Anonymous
@HelkaHomba I eagerly await such a world

@Geobits Goes great with facon...

@HelkaHomba I know you can get two to a stack if one's upside down. It's easier to balance that way.

Anonymous
@trichoplax Indeed; the nearest trash receptacle readily accepts both

4:09 AM
I'm usually the nearest trash receptacle

Even fake butter tastes bad to me, so fake cheese never had a chance.

Or rather, there's an indiegogo about it so it must be a brilliant new product ready any day now /s

@HelkaHomba That $5M reward though.

@downgoat should try it

@HelkaHomba I got my mod swag some time ago (shortly after graduation). This was for reaching 100k.

Oh I didn't realize they did that for every site

Neither did I. It was a nice surprise. :)

I also got some from Crypto when they graduated and for participating in an election on SO.
