IP bans are funny things. It’s possible we accidentally blocked a small area known as “all of Egypt” yesterday…

@quintopia Well, we could golf code and see if they can to unravel it. And they can organize code and we'll obfuscate it and put them into shock

@Doorknob I saw this on meta just now.

@Doorknob AHAHAHAHAH

@Geobits me too :P

@AlexA. Pls invite elendia_starman to the Steam group. He's a good friend of mine.

3:02 AM
@Calvin'sHobbies Write unit tests for this 400 byte block of Jelly.

400 bytes of Jelly? shudders

@Doorknob s/y/i

that's even worse

@El'endiaStarman OK :D

Q: Access to Stack Exchange sites from Egypt is denied. What is happening?

Mohammed Al AshaalIn Egypt we (most of us) are getting an error message while browsing any of the Stack Exchange sites that says "Access Denied", what is going on or why ?

That was a nice exchange =P
> Sorry... My bad.

3:05 AM
It's great how responsive SE people are to people complaining when they make mistakes.

Mostly because their unit tests are literally "meta."

@El'endiaStarman ..thinks of pinging Grace Note again..

>_>

3:06 AM
@Calvin'sHobbies He/she is already responding.
Presumably it's an obscure bug.

This reminds me of the time I (as part of a mod team) banned a whole city in India.

@AlexA. Who has rusty memes? =P

@Roujo @phase's memes are rusty as hell

3:08 AM
It was all because of some single guy who seemed to have an unbounded number of unique IP addresses.

@AlexA. Ah, I see. Haven't had the pleasure. =P

> > The one thing more he cherishes more is her family, and he greatly enjoys that her new job lets him keep their new Southwick home from being a lonely place during the day, even if she can't keep his mother company during the day proper.

That same dude drove us to implement "banned phrases", or combinations of words, which, when posted, would result in automatic removal.

I think I'm pretty well justified in writing he/she. :P

@El'endiaStarman That sentence does produce a nice effect ^^

3:12 AM
@Calvin'sHobbies Hmm. I... haven't actually read something that mixes pronouns like that.
It doesn't sound nearly as awkward as I thought; in fact, I may start doing that.

I thought it was about two different people

@ThomasKwa Good luck talking about yourself in the third person all the time. :P

Geobits doesn't have a problem with that at all.

@Doorknob I'll get opportunities to.

The BOULDER doesn't either.

3:14 AM
@Doorknob don't worry. 90% of it is compressed strings.

Looking at my list of 46 Steam games, I only have two installed: Antichamber and Star Wars: Battlefront II.

> It doesn't sound nearly as awkward as I thought; in fact, I may start doing that.
Oh
> I thought it was about two different people
I was thinking of it
> @ThomasKwa Good luck talking about yourself in the third person all the time. :P
I ' m not sure what you mean .
> Geobits doesn't have a problem with that at all.

@Doorknob

_UNK

> Looking at my list of 46 Steam games, I only have two installed: Antichamber and Star Wars: Battlefront II.

@Geobits ?

Still incredibly vague.
Feeding current chat in to see what it spits back.

Oh.

3:18 AM
Wow, I was the only one to get _UNK'd.
4

@Geobits Try _UNK.

> _UNK
_UNK

It _UNKs back at me, I've tried.

(a prediction...)
heh

How about Geobits does not like _UNK?

3:22 AM
> Geobits does not like _UNK
_UNK

It doesn't automatically _UNK anything with that in it, though.
> You've got _UNK in your trunk.
I ' m not sure what you mean

@Geobits At what point will Geobits just start writing these himself to amass stars?

@Quill ...those are some incredibly photogenic cave people.

I think only one's been starred so far. It's usually other people in the reactionary comments that get starred.
Besides, if I want stars, I can get stars :P

3:24 AM
@El'endiaStarman Why thank you

I just drew a really good summation symbol

Oh wait, I actually have six games installed on Steam. The other four were updating: Age of Empires II: HD Edition, Audiosurf, Portal Stories: Mel, and Team Fortress 2.

@Doorknob Does it have serifs? Can we have a picture?

Oh wow, it really is learning:
> Is Alex wrong?
Yep

ಠ_ಠ

3:26 AM
It knows

@Doorknob Copy-paste it everywhere!

2 mins ago, by Geobits
Besides, if I want stars, I can get stars :P

Your child is learning, @Geobits.

@ThomasKwa it has serifs. :P Taking a picture would require taking my math binder back out of my backpack which is a lot of work

@Doorknob Worth it

3:27 AM
4 mins ago, by Calvin's Hobbies
@Geobits At what point will Geobits just start writing these himself to amass stars?

@Doorknob Sweet.

(unrelated)

@Geobits You lasted 4 minutes

@Calvin'sHobbies take off the tinfoil and calm down

3:28 AM
If it's sufficiently good, I'll award 50 points to a math answer here that you manage to work an image of it into. Not kidding.

haha

Challenge idea: Sneakiest way to include 'alex is wrong' into your code execution

@Geobits could be faked ;)

3:29 AM
@Doorknob lol but also interesting factoid: The French word for apple, pomme, also appears in the word for potato, pomme de terre (literally "apple of the Earth").

@Geobits I HAVE THAT BACKGROUND

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ /o

@Calvin'sHobbies Could be, but we all know the truth about this. It doesn't take much to convince the bot of Alex's wrongness.

@Geobits Ask if someone else is wrong
That's the real test

@Geobits You wrote Marky in Python? I thought you only used Java.

3:30 AM
It's actually a hardcoded response

Ah, so it doesn't really know about Alex, it's just a smug bastard:
4
> Is Geobits wrong?
yes
> Is Dennis wrong?
Yep
> Is everybody wrong?
I ' m not sure what you mean
> Is Calvin's Hobbies wrong?
yes

haha

@AlexA. Oh, I didn't really write anything. Just modified an existing script that came with tensorflow. They only have python or C/C++ APIs at the moment anyway, though, IIRC.

@Geobits I'm not familiar with Tensorflow but that sounds like oodles of fun.

It really is :D

3:33 AM
oodles

oodles

Yes, it's like noodles, but it's not PC to say the N-word.

i come back in and there's exactly 512 messages

@Geobits you mean, "it's ot PC"

What's wrong with oodles?

3:36 AM
Nothing. I love udon oodles in particular.

I love udon oodles and pho oodles and pad thai oodles and all kinds of oodles

ramen oodles?

YES
@Calvin'sHobbies Are you on Steam? (i.e. do you play anything other than Minecraft?)

@AlexA. make a steam group message here so we can star it

why is this "steam" thing necessary when one can play nethack without it

3:39 AM
It's not. I only have it installed because my kid plays Terraria through it.

because there's hats?

@Geobits is that like nethack but worse

@Doorknob Nothing exists that fits that description.

Yo, I made a Steam group for PPCG folks. Ping me with your Steam username if you want to join!
9

@Geobits ಠ_ಠ

3:39 AM
actually iirc some tile mod for nethack can be bought on steam
also terraria is a bit like nethack at times...

I thought Terraria was a Minecraft clone

not exactly

ok

6/10 peeps

6/10 would peep again
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

3:42 AM
once we hit 10 we can play cs against each other and 12 tf2
very exciting

Doorknob, you have some explaining to do:
> Is nethack the best game ever made?
yes
> Are you saying that because Doorknob threatened you?
no
> You can be honest with me. Just tell me the truth: Is Doorknob threatening you?
_UNK
> I see. So you're on his side then?
yes
> Bye
Bye

hahahahaha

unk is inconclusive

btw whats the perplexity

26.44 right now

3:44 AM
that's perplexing

Quite

@quartata ha. okay.
@cyoce will destroy everyone in cs

I can destroy people in nethack maybe :P

@Quill good point we'll replace him with a bot

@AlexA. I have Steam but rarely play, I'm calvinshobbies16 (or maybe I'm Helka Homba, not sure. Opening steam I see both names)

3:48 AM
then it'd be me
@Calvin'sHobbies the one in the top right is your signin username, not necessarily your active username
the active username is the one in the big bold text next to Store, Library and Community

Then Helka Homba is my active username I guess

@quartata I set my Facebook language to Leetspeak five years or so ago and haven't changed it since then. :P

@Quill dirt elite 1 come at me bro

3:51 AM
@Quill Ah, okay.

@El'endiaStarman That's a thing? O_O
I set it to Japanese once and had to do a lot of guessing to figure out how to change it back.
Turns out I didn't know enough Japanese to successfully navigate the site.

lol

I still have an MP3 player I got from Japan with an all Japanese interface. It's great, because nobody messes with it.

>2016

Apple music? Eww, why?

3:56 AM
it replaced half my music with different covers and alternate remixes

@Quill It replaced actual songs?

deleted the files and pointed where the songs to itunes versions on the store

that's dumb
what if you added self made music that happened to have similar titles

idk, maybe

They might do fingerprint matching rather than by title.

Similar to how youtube detects copyrighted music.

still, actually deleting a users files seems like a huge no no for media software

Oh, sure. I'm not defending it in the least.

@Geobits feed it a movie script

@Quill It uses movie scripts to cross-check with, but not for the base vocabulary. About 300k lines of them I believe.

did you choose to feed it that?
or is that a platform thing?

Noun: perquisite ‎(plural perquisites)

  5. A privilege or possession held or claimed exclusively by a certain person, group or class.

Verb: perquisite

I read a paper where they did that, and I thought it was a good idea.

Substantial avocado is taboo in my culture

Does nobody else find it weird that that list has 6 numbered items, but only three definitions? Those example sentences really shouldn't be numbered :/
Hmm, and it's only like that in the onebox. Weird.

4:19 AM
Yep, fault of the onebox.
New book title: The Fault in Our Oneboxes.

still a better lovestory

Just you watch, it'll become a bestseller and get made into a movie.

How many oneboxable sites are there? (found this but they're just suggestions)

@El'endiaStarman who will you get to act in this movie

PPCG peeps of course.

lol, imagine if you replaced chat messages with movie dialogue

wrote the movie script in PPCG speak

Q: Abitrary Precision Integer Division

LiamWe will be implementing division for arbitrarily large integers. This is code-golf. The task is to write a program or function that implements arbitrary precision integers and Division on them. Input You will be given 2 things as input: a string of base 10 digits, call it n. another string...

4:28 AM
@AshwinGupta Don't let Peter discourage you from using the Sandbox. It's a great resource for getting feedback on challenge ideas.

@Quill thats a pretty good one.
@AlexA. I'm just kidding. I dont use sandbox beacuse I dont have any good ideas.

WHY ARE PINEAPPLES SO POINTY
7

@AshwinGupta That's not true, I bet you have plenty of good ideas. ;)

@AshwinGupta The sandbox is a better place for not-good ideas than the main site ;)

4:29 AM
@AlexA. true. Just not good challenge ideas ;). Thanks though.
@Geobits well thats also true.

Every now and then, a not-good idea gets tranformed into a beautiful butterfly.

I swear my logic here is always trumped. I guess thats what I get for talking to a chatroom of programmers...
;)

What is this JSmash thing, btw?
As a Java golfer, I'm intrigued. I've heard of a couple attempts, but nothing that sounded very good yet.

Oh
its nothing
a total complete failure

@Geobits @GamrCorps did a thing

4:31 AM
because I'm bad.
I started and failed. Completly.
I may come back to it one day.
I'm just not good enough yet for something like this.
I don't really even know the basics of writing a language.
I got double/float basic operations working

Eh, don't be discouraged. Java isn't exactly an ideal base for a golfing language, so it would naturally be harder than already more concise languages.

@AlexA. My strategy was to post all the ideas I had throughout the years I was learning to program. I'm kinda tapped out now :/

Its awful though you ought to see this if you are curious: codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/116186/…
@Geobits true. I'll definetly come back to it soon. When I've learned more that is. For the time being I have other things to learn in programming. I'll temporarily remove that from my page though thanks for pointing it out.

@AshwinGupta Don't sell yourself short. You're making it and learning and hopefully enjoying it, and that's what matters. :)

@AlexA. true again. That's my objective with every project I work on. Still a begginer. Thanks AGAIN for words of encoragement!

4:34 AM
@Doorknob Did that ever get finished?

@AshwinGupta :)
Chat mini-puzzle: Consider a loaded six-sided die with faces numbered 1-6 such that 3 is twice as likely to appear face up as any other face. What is the probability of each face?

hold up getting a piece of paper

@AlexA. With faces 1:1:3:3:3:3, they each have a 1/6 chance.

@Geobits I think he means a weighted standard die.

LOL
@Geobits very clever...

4:37 AM
@El'endiaStarman Well I figured that :P

@Geobits ಠ_ಠ fixed

I love this background

darn thats actually pretty hard Alex...

@AshwinGupta I know, it's my girlfriend's homework D:

But why wouldn't it just be 1/7 for each of the other five faces and 2/7 for 3?

4:38 AM
@Geobits Why wouldn't it be? I don't know, that sounds right.

@AlexA. Do you mean that 3 is twice as likely as {1,2,4,5,6} or that 3 is twice as likely as 1 (and likewise for 2, 4, 5, 6)?

@El'endiaStarman The latter

Theere must be some algebra trick
I'm thinking here

Oh, yea that would make a difference. -1 for ambiguity

I feel like I should know this I just took Algebra 1 last year =/

4:38 AM
I agree with Geobits. 1/7 for {1,2,4,5,6} and 2/7 for 3.

@AshwinGupta If it makes you feel any better, this is a university course on probability. ;)

@AlexA. oh. Well then I quit.

@El'endiaStarman Awesome. She told me to tell you guys that that was actually her first instinct but I led her astray. >_>

4:40 AM
@AlexA. She is obviously not current with our memes.

I just verified it with my TI's prob simulator. Elendia is correct.

@Geobits She's actually well aware of the meme...

:D

@quartata well yeah, the probability has to add up to 1

Thanks for the help, all!

4:41 AM
@Quill i know it's fairly obvious, just wanted to make sure we weren't doing anything stupid

@NewMainPosts pinepple hurtinggs my moth

@AlexA. That's funny :P but I kinda feel bad :\

The way to think about that problem is to pretend you have an extra 3 because it's twice as likely. Hence, {1,2,3,3,4,5,6}. The probabilities of 1/7 and 2/7 follow naturally.

@Calvin'sHobbies ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@El'endiaStarman Fuck that's so simple

Hm. I doubt this is correct: but my math gets me that the denominator for each fraction should be 1.16666

4:44 AM
Hm. How'd you get that?

That's 7/6

You have a factor of 7 in there, which is correct, but I'm not sure where you got the 6 from. Also, it's inverted. (1.1666 ~= 7/6.)

If an answer were to do a google search for an answer and return the result, would that be a loophole?

@Downgoat Yes
Fetching the result from an external source

Otherwise we'd have lots of OEIS fetches :/

^ That answer seems to be stretching the rules

would it violate that loophole?

Yeah I got 7/6 as a denominator
then all the numbers are 1/1.166
except the loaded number
which is 2/1.1666
thats my math

@Downgoat That's actually an interesting case IMO.

@El'endiaStarman I feel like extending the sample space like that is unnatural, but it works, so...

4:47 AM
I doubt its right.

I'm not sure how I feel about it right off hand.

I'll upload my work one second.

It's clearly fetching results, but it's still only using them as a heuristic.

@Downgoat I'd say leave it since it's novel but make it clear that it's not allowed to win
It's just solving
ThreeProb = 2 * OtherProb
OtherProb * 5 + ThreeProb = 1

@Doorknob what did I do?

4:49 AM
Java golfing lang. I was wondering if it got done. Looking over the github now.

@Geobits I attempted it before github.com/phase/j--

@AshwinGupta Sounds like you're on the right track, but the thing with probabilities is that all of the probabilities have to sum to 1. If each number is 1/(7/6) = 6/7, with one number as 2/(7/6) = 12/7, (6+6+12+6+6+6)/7 ≠ 1.
@phase This is beautiful :D how did you make it?

@AlexA. one layer with your avatard, one layer with me drawing with my pen that has a stylus on the other side
cause my laptop is a touch screen

@AlexA. Can I join the steam group? I think my username is Downgoat

@Geobits It is partially done. Usable, but it has bugs. I temporarily stopped working on it because there was little interest in it. Guess its time to start again :P

Hmm. Does anyone know of a java-based lang that isn't just shorthand? I mean, these would both cut down the byte count significantly, but if it's just that, I'll stick to Java. No offense intended.

Thats my work.

@Geobits D is a lot like Java and I use it instead because it has less overhead

4:53 AM
@AshwinGupta How did you get from (1+1+1+1+1)/6x=1 to 7/6x=1 ?

@Geobits not a language: but I wrote an extremely quick lib that can save lots of bytes. github.com/niwhsa9/Quick-Print
I think its fair game since java print statements are ridiculously long.
apologies
@Geobits I meant (1+1+1+1+1 + 2)/6x=1

@Geobits CJam is written in Java. Does that count? :P

@AlexA. Not remotely :P

@Geobits javascript?

JavaScript is scripting Java and scripting is shorter than programming, so JavaScript is shortened Java

4:55 AM
@Quill I'll pretend I didn't hear/read that.

@AshwinGupta Why on EARTH do you have a GitHub repository for a Java project with everything but the Java code?????????

thatsthe fixed one.
@phase what?

@AshwinGupta But if you're adding fractions with the same denominator you don't add the denominator. e.g. 1/x + 1/x is 2/x, not 2/2x

@AshwinGupta github.com/niwhsa9/Quick-Print doesn't contain source code, only the Jar and class file

@phase its got java code in it go to bin/src
wait what.. you are right.

4:56 AM
bin/src? That just feels icky ;)

wait what the heck.

it's icky because it doesn't exist

Good catch @phase. Darn I don't know what happened.

@AshwinGupta You seem to be saying 1/x+1/x+1/x+1/x+1/x+2/x = 7/(6x), but it's 7/x

4:57 AM
You're effectively duplicating a face, so you just get 7/x = 1, rearrange that and you get x = 7/1

fixing it now.
@Calvin'sHobbies oh

and you could just do
        static void p(Object o) {
		System.out.print(o);
	}

@phase did not realize that. I'm fixing it hold on. Let me respond to calvin too I feel bad he is helping me and I'm ignoring him lol
@Calvin'sHobbies you are correct I'm going to redo that
