@Doorknob pretty much the only programmer that comes to chat besides balpha
Pure magic

Shog is a CM though, he's not a dev

@Quill did you see the comment underneath

^ also that, (I say programmer because he has like 100k on SO)

:O!!! I can't believe you used a filter bypass! I should flag this for moderator attention! — animuson ♦ Dec 23 '11 at 6:20

That was back when animuson didn't have the diamond, but now it's even funnier. :P

3:02 AM
@AlexA. did we ask him to look at your PPCG graduation question on meta?

Area 52? Never heard of that.

It was the unofficial name from... a while ago

@Maltysen Calvin pinged him in here and linked to it but I doubt 1.) he's seen it, 2.) he cares, or 3.) it's his place to say anything even if he had seen it.

@AlexA. @Shog9 please take a look at :)

Shog is your CM? Pops is ours.

Grace Note is ours.

Oh. Why was Shog in here?
I don't think I've ever seen him at CR.

Somebody was getting flagged like crazy.
And he just popped in.

Oh.

3:06 AM
He also left a comment on our meta.

Reminds me of the April fools thing.

moral of the story: when in doubt, flag all the things

No stubby pencils? What a waste. — Shog9 ♦ Jan 6 at 2:59
@Hosch250 Ah yes, the thing that made literally everyone on the network hate us.

@Doorknob I'm in doubt whether or not I should flag this

Yeah, that was pretty rude of you.
But, I did try to help you win after you stopped.

3:07 AM
@Doorknob and people wonder why you guys have the most flagged room on the chat.se domain

@Quill we don't?

We really don't.
Like at all.

I remember seeing a table in TL but I can't find it now

I would thing anime's room or something

Or Mathematics.

3:09 AM
I'm surprised you guys haven't done one of these yet: meta.codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/999/…

I would guess The Bridge
or, maybe Physics
@Quill I have

not to stereotype, but the more non-programmer sites seem to have more flags
I've handled a few from The h bar, You are Here, The Bridge, Mos Eisley lately

@Quill I'm bothered by this statement. What makes you think that?

Mos was so bad they nuked it.

You mean the room no longer exists?

3:11 AM
They re-created it.

It was made readonly and then reinstated

Wow

I thought they re-created it from scratch?

@Quill Probably just bias. You probably hang out in all the programming-related chatrooms and a very small proportion of the non-programming ones
just because there are so many more non-programming chatrooms

Talking about readonly, rolfl made our room readonly after kicking everyone once.

3:12 AM
Why?

... everyone?

Yes.

@AlexA. Some troll came in and there was a fight over whether a question was on topic.

@Hosch250 Wonderful. :/

Several regulars put their oar in and got kicked.
Then, the room was made so only mods could talk.
Eventually, it was reinstated.

it's not fun when room incidents happen

3:14 AM
Another time, a bunch of teenagers were acting "like gulls squabbling over garbage", or something. The whole room blew up, and we had to create a second room.
One of the users permanently left chat.

@Hosch250 s/teenagers/ethan, q and mast/

Despite being wildly off topic at all times, I think this is the tamest public chat room I've seen on the network.

Now, I have that problem sometimes myself, so I'm not pointing any fingers.

@AlexA. More so than TL? :P

I think the whole 'no-topic' attitude works better

Making side rooms when you need to have serious discussions

@AlexA. oh I can't read

Yeah, interesting discussions get killed all the time in the 2nd because a room owner sends us to the other room.
Most of the regulars stay out of that room.

@Quill I made a side room for people who actually want to discuss golfing code and it keeps freezing because nobody uses it. :P

I use it as a Dilbert feed.

Do the chatrooms have like rules on SE?
I have never actually been in one really. I just joined since I was looking at doorkobs profile after viewing one of his answers.

3:26 AM
I just started a new Dwarf Fortress world.

@AshwinGupta Some of them do. This one is pretty lax, though; pretty much anything is on-topic. :P

Whats the topic?

I am ashamed. Jolf is the probably the most verbose golfing language ;-;

@AshwinGupta In theory, "General discussion for codegolf.stackexchange.com "
In practice, anything and everything

I can't imagine that codegolf includes pizza xD.
okay got it

3:27 AM
@AshwinGupta Precisely. :P

Okay well bye

Oh, there are a few chatroom-wide rules, though, but nothing out of the ordinary: chat.stackexchange.com/faq

Too bad I can't actually understand his answer since I don't know Jelly LOL

@Quill What? Really?! I can't believe he's not Büttner!

@Doorknob You're attached to a gate not a door, aren't you?

@Doorknob grooooooaaaaan

@AlexA. thank you

@Doorknob somebody should've bought him a tub

@AshwinGupta For what?

for the groan.

Oh haha

@Calvin'sHobbies I might not even be attached to an immobile object. :O
@AlexA. heh :D

So I guess by all of this logic I am the planet mars?

(no one is going to make watergate jokes? :/)

@AshwinGupta Yes!

@AshwinGupta Are you saying that you're not?
I personally find that very doubtful

3:38 AM
@Doorknob dont be silly, see the little earth in the background? I am the planet earth.

ah, okay, makes complete sense

Ok now I got to go for real.
Bye.

See you later (if you do stop by again)!

I like this room though I'll come back soon enough

\o/

3:39 AM
Yeah maybe tomorrow or something. Next time I log on for a golf

@AshwinGupta I'm still rather surprised that Jolf made the list.
@AshwinGupta bye!

cya!

So, I know the factor of low questions per day is the only underperforming factor on PPCG as far as A51 is concerned, but have the CMs actually given a PSA or a How is code golf doing meta post?

bye!

@Quill no, which is why @AlexA. made his recent meta post
Well... yes, but a long time ago

3:40 AM
Almost 2 years ago now.

Since then, they have had pretty much zero communication with us though

I would seriously consider pinging a CM and asking what the chocolate brownie fudge is going on

That's what Alex posted on meta for
I may consider poking a CM in TL with those exact words though

meta != CMs will see it
but yeah

In theory, CMs watch over per-site metas
In theory...

3:42 AM
Just how, in theory, we have a topic.

Like raspberry pi is underperforming two of its criteria even out of grad

The A51 criteria don't matter
at all
not even a little

@Doorknob What about QPD?

Yes, a little

@AlexA. A51 says 5 is enough. 5 isn't enough.

3:44 AM
Ah.

All that matters is that we have this place, that we have each other. That we continue to "put off life" for this place.
#Hippy

Like, I get that Winterbash is important, and that graduating sites in the middle of grad is important, but two years since a PSA is crazy

We don't even have site self-evals

I shed a tear for you, my code-brethren
@Doorknob wat?

@Quill Your tear is well-appreciated, former hat maniac.

3:47 AM
@Quill All beta sites (except PPCG and previously CR) routinely have self-evaluation queues, where users can figure out how well they're doing in important aspects of the site.
For example:
9
Q: Let's get critical: May 2015 Site Self-Evaluation

CommunityWe all love Puzzling Stack Exchange, but there is a whole world of people out there who need answers to their questions and don't even know that this site exists. maybe it's just easier to evaluate sites where there's like no comments back asking for things

g'night guys

Hey everyone

XD
Oh well, one lost, one gained ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thomas == Conor sleep-coding confirmed

Whats a good way to force yourself on a different sleep schedule?

Lose sleep.
Disclaimer: hasn't worked terribly well for me.

@Calvin'sHobbies go swimming during the day

@El'endiaStarman doing that

Hypothetical: suppose in the language X I develop, I make it possible to create two variables x and y such that y = 2x....and y updates when x changes. Automatically. When would this not be a good thing?
And, when would it be a good thing?

4:03 AM
you're asking about side-effects of variable setting?

I guess?

You can do that in C# with getters and setters, but it's not the best to have side effects as the code should exhibit what's it doing and not be shady, even to those maintaining it

Well, I mean as a built-in feature.
I feel like it could be really convenient in some cases.

I suppose... you can link two setters together

Yeah, it'd probably be best to state it explicitly. Like \link(x,y=2*x).

4:07 AM
var o = {}, b = 3;
o.__defineSetter__('value', function(val) {
    o.value = val; b *= val;
});
o.value = 5; console.log(b); // 15
in JavaScript it would look like that

If you then do o.value = 2, console.log(b) will not give 6, but rather 30...right?

3 * 2 = 6

But you're doing b *=.
I'mma try it.

that just applies it to the variable

Actually, I got an error: Uncaught RangeError: Maximum call stack size exceeded(…)

4:12 AM
whoops, in the example o.value = val; should be this.value = val
Otherwise it would call itself
LOL

Nope, same error still.

var o = {}, b = 3;
o.__defineSetter__('value', function(val) {
    this.val = val; b *= val;
});
o.value = 5; console.log(b, o.val); // 15, 5

Aaaand I was right. b is 30 after doing o.value = 2.
Try it.

that's a little scary :P

4:23 AM
Now do o.value = 5 after that, and look at b again.

yeah, I knew that
I thought you meant the first time :P
@Doorknob side effects aren't only things you see on horrible webmd articles

16 mins ago, by El'endia Starman
But you're doing b *=.

Yeah, I thought you meant the first time, like 2 * 3 not 2 * 5 and then * 3.
I read your messages wrong:P

right
gotcha :P
Anyway, such a thing could be useful. For instance, in my Variations of Life thing, I have to "manually" update all of the blocks when the grid changes. If that was a feature of the language, that could/would be very convenient.
And I agree that unexpected side-effects would be quite undesirable, so I'd make it an explicit choice.

You could make it a special syntax for them though

4:30 AM
I could.
But what?

or limit it to sibling elements with specific attributes
IDK how you're structuring your language
is it a eso lang or actually readable?

.....it should be both, actually.
Gimme a simple problem that's a bit more complex than "Hello world!".

Uh, FizzBuzz

That'll do.
\printLines( \map( 1..101, \if( _%15 == 0 : 'FizzBuzz' ; _ % 3 == 0 : 'Fizz' ; _ % 5 == 0 : 'Buzz' ; _ )))

interesting

4:37 AM
Actually, it'd probably be more like that ^^

I guess something like \set(_, (_ * 3)) or something similar for side effects
hmm, idk

In a sense, yeah.
I don't fully know how it's gonna happen. I've been letting the ideas stew in my mind.
I wrote a gist on a few of those ideas a while back...lemme find it.
Huh, I have this example: \map(\square(,[1,2,-5,8,3]). I'd rather write that as \square([1,2,-5,8,3]). It's the most sensible possibility.

interesting

@Doorknob I dont want to talk about that...

o?
