Anyway, such a thing could be useful. For instance, in my Variations of Life thing, I have to "manually" update all of the blocks when the grid changes. If that was a feature of the language, that could/would be very convenient.

And I agree that unexpected side-effects would be quite undesirable, so I'd make it an explicit choice.

Huh, I have this example: \map(\square(,[1,2,-5,8,3]). I'd rather write that as \square([1,2,-5,8,3]). It's the most sensible possibility.
