6:00 PM
Just realised how active (as a whole) our meta is. Compare the Q ids for each link in this table (most of the are discussions posted in the last few days). Ours is 23854, second only to Math.SE with 34076

It still happens without the linux VM open though, so it seems the browser might also play a part in it
Conclusion: My laptop is a potato and the Chrome OS people might have messed something up

@cairdcoinheringaahing Odd, I didn't think of it as particularly active outside of the Sandbox. We rarely ever get new questions

~8000 of those ids are Sandbox answers, granted, but that still puts us around 15000, which is 4th in that list

I'm sad that other sites are so inactive now :(

I love how you can click "end process" on the GPU process on chromebooks, and it makes the screen go black for a few seconds :p

6:11 PM
Chromebooks are garbage

I personally love them
It's nice to have a very cheap, somewhat fast laptop that does basically everything you need

*everything you need :p

Other than gaming and video editing, there's not much they're bad at :p
Compared with something like a windows laptop for the same cost, they do much better
If you've ever used a $200 windows laptop, you know how much better a chromebook is for that price range
But then again you don't, because using said $200 windows laptop already caused you to jump off a building

and there update plan is crap, after 5 years its done

After five years what's done?

6:17 PM
updates from google
they stop supporting devices after 5 years

Who uses the same laptop for 5 years anyway, especially if it's a chromebook?
The main good thing about them is that they're cheap
And a lot of the new features require updated hardware, so updating old ones won't give you much anyway
And I've found the updates themselves to be pretty consistently good, and they're pretty frequent

but you still have the option with a windows computer, give it to a sibling, whatever
chromebook you cant

Chrome OS is secure and has enough features already, even if they didn't update it it'd be fine for another decade

dont get me started on chrome OS...

I have a chromebook from five years ago, my dad still uses it and it works fine (after changing out a $20 part). It probably will work for another five years, too
Chrome OS is pretty awesome, IMO

6:21 PM
but all you can really use is googles apps

Haha lol what
You can run anything you can run on Linux or Android
And most stuff's through the browser anyway

well for 90% of chromebooks you cant

Only for old ones

because of the update suport

Every chromebook I've seen made in the last few years has Linux and Google Play support
For hardware reasons older ones don't

6:22 PM
last few years
what reasons

@Baby_Boy Exactly, Chrome OS is still evolving quite a bit
I'm not talking about Chrome OS five years ago, I'm talking about Chrome OS

android phones hava had google play for years
and they are much smaller

Uh...yeah?
That's irrelevant though
Android and Chrome OS are totally different things

so what hardware reasons are there for no google play?

I don't know exactly
But I'd imagine making android apps run on a chromebook requires some pretty major updates

6:25 PM
and what about the linux support?

Same thing
It requires lots of sandboxing and stuff

i can run linux on my 6 year old chromebook but i had to jailbreak it

Well sure, the hardware itself can run linux, but not in the VM setup Chrome OS uses

chrome OS is linux
well a boiled down version

The opposite
Not boiled down
Lots of stuff on top of it

6:28 PM
you can do everything you can do on chrome os and more on standard linux
so it has less

@Baby_Boy But slower
Try running FF on Chrome OS, and you'll notice it runs considerably slower than Chrome. It's optimized very heavily.

chrome OS is faster because its boiled down

But you still have access to basically everything you do on Linux
Despite the higher speed and sleeker UI when browsing the web
Which happens to be a large percentage of what I (and most people) do

windows has a much better ui than chrome OS

And a quarter the speed :p

6:30 PM
as well as ubuntu

Plus I disagree
And ubuntu is hideous

NO
SATAN

20.04 is okay I guess, but I still vastly prefer Chrome OS's appearance

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH
...

I run Ubuntu on my other laptop, and I like it. But the UI is no contest.

6:31 PM
and windows?
oh and dont forget mac

They're okay, although I still prefer some aspects of Chrome
Windows's incessant advertising and preinstalled adware is very annoying, whereas chromebooks are nice out of the box

like what?
i ment aspects of chrome OS

Chrome OS's taskbar is nice, and the UI is very consistent
Windows is mostly nice, but occasionally you come across older programs that look ancient
I will admit it does look about as good though once you get rid of all the garbage preinstalled stuff
Haven't used Mac OS in about ten years so can't say much about that
I can say I really don't like the design of iOS, so if Mac is anything like that then Chrome OS is better

and the availability of aplications on widows, you have to admit, is a big plus

It is a big plus yeah, but Chrome OS has a big selection as well
Basically everything from Linux, plus android, plus its own native apps

6:35 PM
MUCH smaller still

@BrowncatPrograms GNOME?
I quite like it, although it doesn't look as well designed as Windows

Ubuntu 20.04 relies a lot more on purple than orange, so I like it more, but I remember 18.04 being quite gross

no whe're debaitig chrome OS

It's a lot more customizable than Windows (and probably Chromebooks?)

That's the biggest advantage of Linux

6:37 PM
@user definatly chromebooks

Linux > Windows > Chromebooks for customizability
Chromebooks don't have all that much to customize though :p

you mean Linux>windows>mac>chrome

@Baby_Boy Don't have strong opinions on Chrome OS, but Material themes just feel...light to me. Like the application doesn't have any substance. I know it's a bit silly, but I prefer Windows for the UI

I don't know anything about modern Mac OS

@user agreed my favorite ui is definitely windows

6:38 PM
MacOS looks like it could be customized but Apple is so territorial about their products

Actually, I might have to concede on the UI thing

OH?
PLEASE GO ON!

@BrowncatPrograms Concede what?

:)

@user Chromebooks' UI is nice, but with some tweaks I guess Windows does look better

6:40 PM
YESSS

But appearance is not the reason I use a chromebook every single day :p

walk into the light my child

@BrowncatPrograms Chromebooks don't look too bad, though, it's not a deal-breaker
Baby_Boy is the new Jesus :P

@BrowncatPrograms It's the fact that it does everything I need (except Minecraft), but if some idiot spills chocolate milk on it I don't have to care

@user the hardware on the other hand

6:41 PM
@BrowncatPrograms Wait, Chromebooks are chocolate milk proof?

@Baby_Boy Chromebooks squeeze way more out of cheap hardware than Windows
@user No, they're cheap enough you just walk away and get a new one :p

@user oo i like that...

@Baby_Boy I'm also kinda biased against them thanks to my experiences with school Chromebooks
@BrowncatPrograms lol

@user I think the same, maybe because generic material UIs have kinda become overused on every generic android app and every generic web app that they look rubbish now

@BrowncatPrograms i like his interpretation better

6:42 PM
Well, my chromebook is actually quite durable to be fair

it's like using the default MS Office font (Calibri) for branded documents

It's suffered some serious abuse and works just as well as it did when I got it

@BrowncatPrograms apart from the disk failing?? oh wait was that a different laptop

@BrowncatPrograms i just want to be certian, this was a just a debate of pros and cons so no hard feelings, right? :)

@user They bought new Chromebooks with touchscreens for everyone, even those who can carry around laptops of their own, but half the features are disabled (even completely harmless ones, like changing the fonts and stuff). I can't run a single command in crosh, can't install anything, can't customize anything

6:43 PM
@user same for me...

@Baby_Boy Of course :p

@Baby_Boy I assume both of you should only have soft feelings left, since this was about software and not hardware

@BrowncatPrograms It's been hit multiple times with very fast moving and heavy objects (the whole screen's been knocked off by a basketball and I just popped it back on and nothing happened), I've walked around in the rain with it (when my $1k laptop completely died after walking though some rain with it in three layers of backpacks/sleeves)

> It's been hit multiple times with very fast moving and heavy objects

@user i tryed to activate developer mode and it just power washed it, they had to put in the administrator login XD

6:45 PM
> the whole screen's been knocked off by a basketball
are you being bullied?

Imagine having an opinion about OSs instead of just buying any laptop and making it work :P

@user Must be hard being the target of so many assassination attempts :P
@BrowncatPrograms Wait, are you the bully? Are your victims retaliating against you?

In PE last year we spent the last half hour sitting around on our laptops, but someone decided to play basketball...and I was sitting under the basketball thingy

@cairdcoinheringaahing Of course, you must just wipe the OS on any laptop you get so you can replace it with cairdOS :P

6:46 PM
Well, not directly under it, but close enough. They didn't have very good aim.

> someone decided to play basketball
> I was sitting under the basketball thingy

@BrowncatPrograms Sitting on laptops doesn't sound like a good idea

This seems to be entirely on you IMO :P

@user They need to stay warm or they won't hatch

@user It's the easiest way to get plenty of Jelly praise and Vyxal rants :P

6:47 PM
TIL wolves lay laptops that hatch and become...I don't even want to know

What came first, the Redwolf or the Chromebook?
4

> sitting under the basketball thingy
something tells me your not a sports person XD

Of course not, this is TNB :P
We don't play that kind of golf here

Last time we did, the mods yelled at us after we broke a window :(

@user wait what? i wanted to practice my putting...

6:49 PM
We have some challenges about (w)hole numbers, if you're interested
@Baby_Boy It didn't just tell you it was disabled or something?

it did.... AFTER it did a full reset
and powerwash was disabled

Trying to activate dev mode on any chromebook is an awful idea

what
how??

^^^ Should've been completely blocked by your school administrators
It's like jailbreaking an iPhone

Just use crostini

6:52 PM
@user yeah theyre kinda garbage lmao

@BrowncatPrograms crosh doesn't do anything on my Chromebook (commands like ls and pwd don't work, tracepath and ping just time out)

If school admins were good at their jobs they would work somewhere that pays better :p

lol

@user Who said anything about crosh?

@BrowncatPrograms which you need dev mode to install

6:53 PM
Unfortunately, the ones at my school are too good and keep finding new ways to restrict us :(
@BrowncatPrograms Oh is crostini a different thing

@Baby_Boy No, I mean the linux apps thing
Isn't that called crostini? Or is that something else

No, crostini's something different
It is a tool of the Dark Side: crostini.io

nah thats liux beta

nvm, there's another Crostini

yeah but thats diferent too

6:54 PM
No, I think y'all are thinking of crouton
Crostini is the name of the linux beta

@BrowncatPrograms I can't tell if you're messing with me at this point

theyre part of the same progect

why are there two products called Crostini for ChromeOS? That's very stupid

@BrowncatPrograms This?

6:55 PM
@pxeger A trademark of Google :P

crostini is an open source software for liux on chrome BEFORE linux beta was released

what's with the funky alphabet?

@user I'm like 50% sure I couldn't do this but I'll try again just in case it's possible

Wait no
> Linux on Chrome OS, sometimes called Crostini, allows you to run Linux apps for development alongside your usual Chrome OS desktop & apps.

6:57 PM
@BrowncatPrograms chromeos.dev/en/linux

I'm 90% sure Linux (Beta) == Crostini
@pxeger I got rid of the yucky letters
We don't need those

@BrowncatPrograms oh ffs lmao

(The IDs will be generated with a more reasonable format later on, that's just a placeholder :p)

May I suggest doing it the way repl.it and giphycat do it? (AdventurousStudiousGiraffe or smth)

I'm considering that, yeah
But not very seriously

6:59 PM
:(

I feel like that's unnecessary given the ID is mostly internal
words are good to be typed in by a human

But it's funny :P

var numbers = [
    "a", "b", "c", "d", "f", "g", "i", "j", "k", "n", "o",
    "p", "q", "r", "s", "t", "u", "v", "w", "x", "y", "z"
];
@BrowncatPrograms I think you need to learn what numbers are :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing haven't you done algebra? duuh that's year 6 maths!

Also, why are some letters missing?

7:00 PM
2 mins ago, by Browncat Programs
@pxeger I got rid of the yucky letters

When you get rid of the yucky letters the alphabet is pretty cool

Disagree that l is yucky

@BrowncatPrograms eehhllmm

@cairdcoinheringaahing l is only yucky when it's around j. They can't be together or they'll get into trouble.

...what words have l near j?

7:03 PM
j is friends with i and k, so I get rid of l since it won't make as many of them lonely

@cairdcoinheringaahing it isn't a word, but the literal alphabet has JkL
jelly
jewellery
jilt

@pxeger There's at least 2 e's there to distract Redwolf from j/l :P
@pxeger @BrowncatPrograms Welp, I hope for your synesthesia's sake that you never have a jilted lover :P

...because of the synesthaesia, not because of losing the lover? lmao

@BrowncatPrograms (This isn't actually true I just wanted to get rid of m, but then I had an odd number)

7:05 PM
@pxeger No one wants a jilted lover, but Redwolf especially doesn't :P

other letters > y > j > l > m > h > e
Actually y's cool
j usually is as well
It's just a slightly more off-white color, whereas i and k are grayscale

2/3 of my name is happy to hear that :P

m is usually fine, but map puts it next to a, which makes this horrible yellow-red mix

@BrowncatPrograms you might enjoy en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gadsby_(novel)

I've heard about it :p

7:09 PM
@BrowncatPrograms Hardly, j only mildly tolerates i because j thinks i is an idiot and k has to keep them both in line
l is kinda just oblivious to all that's happening

> i is an idiot
3
—user, 2021

I like to group the letters into groups, so the main reason I dislike l and m is that they get in the way of nice groups
a-d is the first, then f-g, then i-k, then n-t, then u-v, then w-z

Aug 27 at 22:00, by user
i dum

@BrowncatPrograms I do that with countries actually. In particular, Andorra and Mexico can go die
and it's in my interest to prevent Korean reunification

?!

7:13 PM
@pxeger Did you place a bet on them not reunifying or something? :P

Best and Worst Korea go together in a nice pair, and if they unified then Korea wouldn't have a good pair!

@BrowncatPrograms I do a-g, h-l, m-t, and u-z

(I decline to comment which is Best and which is Worst Korea)

I think we all can infer that :P
Aug 22 at 2:54, by user
I stoopid

7:56 PM
britanni.ae          N      1 1 GEN S F
britanni.ae          N      1 1 LOC S F
britanni.ae          N      1 1 DAT S F
britanni.ae          N      1 1 NOM P F
Wtf is wrong with latin
I'm fine with having 300 million endings for nouns and verbs and stuff, but at least don't have duplicates >:|

Everything.

I can rule out NOM P F because I know it's not referring to two or more Britains

Doesn't duplicates make it easier, as you only have to learn one term then apply it everywhere? :P

I'm basically 100% guessing on my translation of this latin text we're supposed to be able to understand :p

I did 7 years of German and 5 years of French, so I can confidently say, yeah, that's about right :P

7:59 PM
Our teacher from last year covered an entirely different set of information from what our textbook this year expects us to know
So I'm mostly just smashing words together and changing around their order until it makes sense

lmao
that was my first thought too

Bye

@cairdcoinheringaahing french >> german, change my mind you can't change my mind

8:01 PM
@pxeger Das ist falsch

Wish my school had german :(

Deutsch ist viel besser als Franzoezisch, aber beide sind besser als Latin oder Spanisch
I've never understood schools teaching latin tbh. Whatever language you learn at school, at least it should be spoken natively by people

@cairdcoinheringaahing *Französisch

I can't type (can't remember how to type) ö on my keyboard, so I used the umlaut -> trailing e rule

@cairdcoinheringaahing it's the z that I'm complaining about (should be s), not the oe/ö
@cairdcoinheringaahing I mean, I can see how it might be somewhat useful to know because of its heavy use in some technical disciplines, but I still don't think it's something a school should bother teaching

8:06 PM
20
A: Is it acceptable to omit umlauts and put an extra 'e' instead?

F.PYou can do it in every-day conversations by E-Mail or chat. But when writing a somewhat official document, you really should try to get the umlauts right. It's just a question of conformity: You want to use the language, so use it correctly. A whole different problem that will probably come up i...

@pxeger ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ z is basically an s, and I haven't written any German in 2 years :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing It's basically the only option I had, wish they'd have gone with german instead of latin

lol fair enough
^ this is error handling in Python
such fun
the blurred parts are the only meat in the code

Isn't there a try: ... except: ... else: ... statement that basically does that?

Also latin has some fricking weird definitions for the same word:
surrender/give over; send to die; ascribe/attribute; give birth/produce; utter;
give birth and send to die being the same word is somewhat concerning

Very Gen Z of it :P
4

8:09 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing else in this case would have no effect other than adding an extra level of indentation :/

Well, it took me two weeks but I've finally finished badly translating a 250 word story in latin
Not knowing anything in the class is ten times worse when everyone around you doesn't actually care and spends the whole class loudly discussing off-topic stuff with each other, and/or has a very annoying laugh and spends class watching (presumably funny) videos
I finally remembered to bring an extension cord to school so I can charge my laptop without having to sit on the floor!

8:29 PM
CMQ: how do you read the word "predate"?
To be a predator on, or to pre-date (come before)?

the latter

Depends on the context
The meaning depends on which syllable is stressed, and I use either/both if there's no context to it

i've never heard the former meaning used before lol; i would use "to prey (on)" for that

I've heard of it, but can't ever remember actually using it in its intended context :P
I think predated is more common
CMQ: How do you pronounce "nokia", as in the phone brand?

@pxeger The latter
@cairdcoinheringaahing no-KEY-uh

8:39 PM
"No" as in the negative, "no", or "no" as in "noh" with a short "o"?

"No" as in "No, this is patrick"

Huh, I say "NOH-key-uh"
Just heard someone pronounce it "nuh-KAI-uh"

huh, apparently nokia is a finnish corporation. gotta ask someone who speaks finnish how it's supposed to be pronounced then :p

> UK: /ˈnɒkiə/, US: /ˈnoʊkiə/, Finnish: [ˈnokiɑ].
Anyone speak IPA?

First one seems like "NAH-key-eh", second seems like "NO-key-eh"
But that's a wild guess

8:45 PM
Putting it through ipa-reader.xyz, the Uk and US ones sounds like I expected
Apparently the Finnish one is "no-key-AH"

Quick question; is input required for challenges?

Not all, no

hello world is a good example of a challenge that doesn't have input xD

challenges rarely have input

8:46 PM
Usually those would be tagged , if the output is deterministic
ninja'd

rip spelling

Okay, so perhaps I'll rephrase. I recently created this puzzle, and since I've worked for several days on it; I'm thinking about making a golfing challenge with it.

I really want to get approved as a synonym for (like for ), so I don't have to type the whole thing out :P

But now that I think about it; I'd probably supply a 2D array of pre-defined characters as input, to simplify the challenge.
That would probably be received better than no input.

@Tacoタコス The problem I'd see with that is that it involves words

8:48 PM
It uses a static file for the requirements

0
Q: Neural Processing Lattice Checker

l4m2 (From document of a game, with some changes) Substrates need support. Therefore, a "-" can't appear under(earlier in input) "α", "β" or "ψ". Given a pattern(six digits, each in 0-8), check if it's valid, aka. is every substrate supported. Shortest code win.

i'd recommend giving that as input

I'm not opposed to that lol
Thanks for the feedback! :D

@NewPosts not a fan of 100% of this challenge being an image
on one hand it shouldn't be too hard to brute force this puzzle on the other hand that feels like cheating even tho i can't think of a great way to go for a solution otherwise xd

8:51 PM
It's also very underspecified

It doesn't seem like the image is a required part of the challenge.

@hyper-neutrino Yeah, @Tacoタコス That's my main concern tbh. There might be some strategies when doing those by hand, but in all likelihood, answers are just oing to brute force it. I don't really see any other approach

Just contains the required information.
OP could've typed it out

> Given a pattern(six digits, each in 0-8), check if it's valid, aka. is every substrate supported
I have no idea how 6 digits between 0 and 8 transform to a grid as shown in the image
Is each digit representative of one of the layers shown?

@cairdcoinheringaahing oh i meant the puzzling challenge lol
like the existing puzzling.se post itself

8:54 PM
Ah, I was talking about potentially converting it to a challenge :P

oh well by the time i could brute force it deusovi will have probably solved it by hand anyway :P
oh nvm he already solved it.

@hyper-neutrino I never understood how Deusovi solves those so quickly.

Eidetic memory lol

Tho I suppose that if you can create a border, you just need to brute force the 4 inner cells
Wouldn't surprise me if he's started with the WARD/DRAW border, then looked for two heteropalindromes that begin/end with A and R
