@Phoenix This is the well-known quine I based mine off of. It was in The Jargon File: main(){char *c="main(){char *c=%c%s%c;printf(c,34,c,34);}";printf(c,34,c,34);}

While it's true that ;#+ will have a much more stable long-term value (as ;# is already crashing), I don't really foresee anything other than a slow and gradual decline in value.

@DestructibleLemon your KOTH bot?
Speaking of KOTH bots, I'm kinda disappointed at Yggdrasil's performance (both Yggdrasils, I've submitted 90% the same bot to 2 different KOTHs)

Maybe that's a hint that your bot it bad.

@Phoenix I did fix one bug that should improve performance
but most of the defeats come from "granularity" errors and the fact that I have to turn it down to bare minimum performance settings to run the same speed as the simple bots.

user165474
If I volutarily ask a mod to lock my account for a specified period of time, could and would they do it?

yes

user165474
12:17 AM
Ok interesting

I actually feel like they probably wouldn't

Ah. :P

oh, really? - Yeah, really. - But why? Never mind, I'll just do it.

user165474
Or "for math" because Dennis is a mathematician. But "for science" is better still :P

user165474

@JanDvorak when you golf your messages/programs so much that they cannot be understood (cough Jelly)

I'm semi disappointed that the messenger isn't as good any more

can i get free upvotes on all my answers from the mods
...for science ofc

I'm convinced this was pretty readable :-D

also I feel kind of ashamed about making three bots that kinda unbalanced play
but it should be fine now

@HyperNeutrino sure, if you downvote all his answers, it'll be flagged up as a pattern of voting abuse and all the votes and rep changes will be reversed; I wouldn't recommend doing this, though

user165474
lol

but then it was buggy and it error'd so I had to fix it

user165474
@JanDvorak that was the reference

user165474
oh I got psych and socio backwards :I

12:21 AM
close enough

@HyperNeutrino hey! :P

how do you compare CS to maths? sometimes I feel like CS is more pure, because often you have to define numbers from scratch

I made Yggdrasil, a bot that looks at the game tree and attempts to find optimal mixed strategies.

nope, you forgot psych and did philosophy

@ais523 -1 using scratch

@PhiNotPi yeah to be truthful, you kind of deserve the problems your bot has if it takes too long

@DestructibleLemon TBH I just timed it at 15 seconds for 200 games of 100 rounds each

user165474
lol "takes too long" that's pretty darn fast I'd say

12:25 AM
That's 1 ms per turn

user165474
I had problems with the racket bot taking a while on SnowballKOTH but that wasn't too bad, only about 500ms/turn

user165474
idea: make starbait, then wait for stars, then edit it to something completely boring and watch it stay on the starboard and then have ROs/mods be like "wtf"

@totallyhuman havent seen the addition of logicians before

The challenge author complains that it takes 1 minute per opponent, but that's because the controller does 1000 games of 100 turns between each pair.

well you posted this crazy vote-bait answer lol

@ASCII-only an artificial one to be precise

@HyperNeutrino >_> I thought they were all artificial

user165474
oh

12:47 AM
@MDXF One if them is Jon Skeet's right?

user165474
well i mean normal humans have neurons

@ASCII-only No, Jon Skeet has a sockpuppet for posting questions

> normal humans

@HyperNeutrino what kind of freak are you, with your neurons!?

All the top users on SO don't have really any questions, but they've got socks to post them

user165474

whyyy

user165474
There are about 6.84e6 users on stack overflow

Yeah

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) or connectionist systems are a computational model used in machine learning, computer science and other research disciplines, which is based on a large collection of connected simple units called artificial neurons, loosely analogous to axons in a biological brain. Connections between neurons carry an activation signal of varying strength. If the combined incoming signals are strong enough, the neuron becomes activated and the signal travels to other neurons connected to it. Such systems can be trained from examples, rather than explicitly programmed, and excel...
Note the URL

I'm gonna be programming a neural network this summer.

12:49 AM
Have fun with that

user165474
well biological neural network is also a neural network

Holy crap there are a lot of C quines

user165474
that means that 1.16e-4% of the users on SO are bots according to you

If my reaction time and typing speed increase dramatically you'll know why

user165474
> not uncommon

12:50 AM
And I thought they were all based off the 113-byte one from The Jargon File

they're are infinite

user165474
@PhiNotPi will you be replacing your brain with your ANN?

user165474
a lot of users on SO have a weekly rep change of like -400 something

> they're are

@HyperNeutrino O_o what

user165474
12:51 AM
bounties

@HyperNeutrino How do they even stay above 0 rep :P

user165474
because they had a lot of rep to begin with

user165474
@ASCII-only you can't go below 1 for one thing :P

Didn't it used to be possible to get sup-rep?

user165474
is there a chess koth? if not i claim it

i think so

user165474
dammit it does

user165474
but wait

user165474
12:53 AM
it's simplified chess

user165474
and only allows java

user165474
could i make a new one...??

Is there a checkers KOTH

user165474
I don't think so.

chess is too complex and also perfect information

user165474
12:54 AM
Go koth?

@HyperNeutrino I personally want a real chess KOTH

@HyperNeutrino o0

user165474
@PhiNotPi I'm considering making one

user165474

Will probably not attract many entries, but for sake of completion please use the full rules

12:55 AM
Checkers is nice and easy compared to chess ^^

user165474
@PhiNotPi please define all of the rules fully. en passant is kinda controversial

pawn's game is fun too

user165474
@totallyhuman are you going to make a checkers koth?

@HyperNeutrino en passant is pretty solidified mainstream rule

I could try but I'd need to look the rules up

12:56 AM
@PhiNotPi this is very true

user165474
@PhiNotPi well my brother claims there's a rule that allows two mutually blocking pawns to make a side capture if it cannot make a normal capture

user165474
like so:

user165474
.p.
.P.

.xP
...

user165474
where p is pawn A, P is pawn B, x is the captured p.

user165474
B moves

12:57 AM
yeah your brother doesn't know what he is talking about
2

That's pretty solidified not mainstream rule

user165474
yay i have people who agree with me on that

@HyperNeutrino also the FIDE

user165474
hm?

for what that's worth
@HyperNeutrino the chess organisation

user165474
12:58 AM

user165474
ah ok i think yes then

(it is funny/sad when you get into an argument, cite FIDE, and then the other person says they don't count because its french or something)

user165474

user165474

user165474
still counts

user165474
ah. that's weird

user165474
I might do that for the koth

user165474
Why am I being ratelimited so hard ;_;

1:00 AM
yeah that guy said he played in money comps but still doesn't know how chess works

@DestructibleLemon I don;t like that

I know
thoughts on welcome to the dungeon koth?
I think everyone glossed over that to chess immediately

user165474
sorry i may have taken this off the original topic

but it is actually a really nice game

user165474
seems interesting. i wouldn't answer it because it seems a bit complex but still nice idea

it's kind of like inverse chicken.
in a way
rather than trying to make the other person swerve, you tend to want to make them not swerve, until its too late and you back out and they crash

user165474
ooo

or you scare them into swerving first and you win because it isn't too late to survive

user165474
well then isn't that just chicken :I

1:03 AM
@HyperNeutrino nope

user165474
oh ok

because someone has to back out

user165474
also how to do exponents in chatjax

its related to chicken anyway.

user165474
ah okay.

1:04 AM
I think we should only have one warrior for simplicity
also my favourite tactic in that game is taking out all of the wizards health and stuff, except for omnipotence
the ol' omnipotence gambit
(context: omnipotence makes you win, if there are no duplicate monsters placed in the dungeon. this means the dungeon is safe at the start of the game when you are removing armor)

user165474
ooo interesting. sorry, i didn't read through it fully because i'm semimultitasking

user165474
s/semi/

yup. suffice to say it is a fun game.

user165474
ah ok

user165474
well anyway i should finish that essay that's due tomorrow

user165474
1:07 AM
bc it's kinda important to raise my mark

it's one of the games my mum can win sometimes. she seems to take that as being better than me :I

user165474
lol your mom is always better than you ultimately

user165474
:P

you guys should place a bounty on this: codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/122232/…
:^)

@HyperNeutrino nope, I still crush her at other games like chess, martian chess, blockus etc.

user165474
1:08 AM
do you not have enough rep?

user165474
@DestructibleLemon ah ok. :P i meant in general but lol

i do, but if i place a bounty, i go right back to 50 rep
or 70

user165474
true

user165474
i'm trying to reach 5000 rep but i keep giving bounties

user165474
yet my rep graph doesn't look like i give bounties

you don't give bounties, do you?

I never give bounties

user165474
who

user165474
me?

i mean, a 50-100 rep bounty would probably draw in more people

user165474
well it's 2 days old

user165474

anyway i actually need to work on the essay now

@ASCII-only what do you mean by retrieve?

@Cyoce Sorry, I got distracted before. I've enabled command-line options for J-uby, so you can enter -i in the Options list now.

@Dennis No worries. Thanks.

@Cyoce Retrieve a variable

@Cyoce It's usually better to ask me in talk.tryitonline.net. Harder to get distracted and won't appear from the visible part of the page that fast.

1:31 AM
@Dennis got it.
@ASCII-only :37661538 I'm thinking a downward/left-pointing arrow, but not sure without an idea of the syntax. Side note - what language is this for?

@Cyoce Charcoal
Maybe these for evaluate and execute? They need to have a non-obscure mnemonic to make it easier ▶▷

I just realised I programmed my bot wrong

@ASCII-only which is which then?

@Cyoce Black would be evaluate to signify holding a value
idk if that's mnemonic-y enough

@ASCII-only might want them pointing in different directions to signify the difference between the two

1:40 AM
hmm idk i was going with the right pointing triangle because the play button is usually used for run buttons

user165474
300 words to go :I

user165474
has anyone read to kill a mockingbird

@HyperNeutrino You writing an essay?
I have

user165474
@MDXF yes

user165474
due tomorrow lol :I

1:44 AM
Yes. Pretty good by school-required reading standards.

@HyperNeutrino ha same

user165474
ok so i need to make my own (semi-) thesis on something

It's some of the best literature I've actually wanted to read

user165474
@MistahFiggins you also have an essay due tomorrow?

user165474
1:44 AM
@MDXF i agree that for things required to be read by school it's quite good

well, sort of a first draft

user165474
@MistahFiggins how much have you done

user165474
@MistahFiggins :I my entire thing is due tomorrow

maybe a third

user165474
lol

user165474
1:45 AM
maybe as in not even?

user165474
lol

user165474
I have 70% done

user165474
by wordcount

1:46 AM
Wait what was I thinking when I used P, Q, and R instead of F, G, H for function names in my examples?

user165474
@Cyoce Were you?

user165474
(were you thinking) ^

@HyperNeutrino Can't be too hard. You've probably written that many words in chat in the last hour.

user165474
lol true

@HyperNeutrino good question. It was a few months ago so I'm not sure.

user165474
1:46 AM
Ah okay. Sometimes I look at my code and think "what was I thinking? Right, I wasn't" lol

I can't even look back at my actual code (not for golfing) from a year ago, it's so bad

user165474
k so i has question. i'm trying to write an essay on how the ewells were important to the plot development blah blah and so i have two point on how they helped make it possible to develop atticus' personality as a just/fair person and how people back then were racist and i need a third point but my idea is bad :I

@MistahFiggins most of mine doesn't even work because it was all JavaScript code that I didn't test on any other computers lol

@HyperNeutrino Compare it to go set a watchman for a more unique approach. (Just read that book too first)

user165474
lol i have no time to read another book

user165474
1:48 AM
it's due in about 12 hours

user165474
and -6 or so because i need to sleep

@HyperNeutrino What grade are you in?

user165474
-2 for time wasted trying to get up from golfing until too late in the night being tired, and getting ready for school, and taking the school bus there

user165474
@Cyoce 9

1:49 AM
@HyperNeutrino then why are you still used to sleeping?

user165474
@Cyoce I'm not

user165474
but I plan on getting sleep tonight so maybe I'm not dead for one day in my life

user165474
@MistahFiggins most of my code is random java stuff and i've learned a lot about good code design between last year and now so i look back and i'm like "did i write this? wow i was an idiot"

@HyperNeutrino I'm in 10th and this is finals week so I haven't slept more than 2 hours per night

user165474
rip

1:50 AM
@HyperNeutrino me too

user165474
and then there's the other flight commander who's also in my tech class and she's gone like 48h without much sleep (as in practically or literally none)

Anyone know how to redirect the output of multiple bash commands (on a single line) to a file?

user165474
command > filename

Why isn't Git pushing when TNB works?

@HyperNeutrino e.g. echo something && echo something && echo something
then redirect all that to one file

user165474
1:53 AM
oh

user165474
nvm then

and to SO I go

user165474
:P

@MDXF Wait

user165474
also I just tried using [text](link) in google hangouts

1:54 AM
HAHA
I do that all the time

(command1; command2; command3) > filename.thing

can't you use cat?

@DestructibleLemon Note the e.g. before the command
@Cyoce Thanks, that worked!

hmm, looks like parens are what you need anyway

@DestructibleLemon Wait yeah that's one command, it echoes a file

1:55 AM
@MDXF np

user165474
and... I just typed s/delet/delete into hangouts

user165474
and this is a non-programmer

user165474
so she probably thinks i've gone insane

user165474
actually everyone knows that already

some people don't start off sane

1:55 AM
Discord now supports the s/pattern/replacement/ syntax for editing messages for some reason.

@HyperNeutrino This is why you use Skype/Discord

@HyperNeutrino Using Vim commands over text gets all the ladies

user165474
@MDXF ... 1. did you just assume my gender 2. whyyy

user165474
@MistahFiggins oh trust me i was kind of sane when i was about 2 years old

1:57 AM
Just joking around :P

user165474
lol
