doesn't look like it would work

Any punctuation...

That's insane

user165474
ah ok :P

space however makes it complain about using letters.

user165474
2:02 AM
s:ll:ii doesn't work on hello ???

user165474
it says pattern ll not found

its because you are bad at regex

@HyperNeutrino Are you on the same line
If not use %s:ll:ii or something

user165474
@ASCII-only ...oh

Why did that get starred
Not only is that stupid, it's rude :P
Haha true

user165474
2:07 AM
c'mon really

Evaluate = , Execute = , is this a bad idea or not

Anyone know why comments can't be undeleted?

user165474
because they're gone forever when you delete them?

user165474
idk

(btw I love how TNB is a suitable replacement for Meta and SO)

user165474
2:08 AM
@ASCII-only I think the other way around makes more sense to me because the way I see it, the empty triangle will run the thingy and then carry the value inside of it (because it's empty)

@HyperNeutrino hmm ok
i also need a character for getting a variable

It's been 420 days since my last message in there.

user165474
completely offtopic question, is dating between a >19yrs person and a <16yrs person illegal

More/less

@HyperNeutrino Depends on how much more/less :P

user165474
2:12 AM
true

Sex is illegal, obviously

Q: Is this relationship creepy?

FishProHDAccording to this XKCD comic, there is a formula to determine whether or not the age gap in a relationship is "creepy". This formula is defined as: (Age/2) + 7 being the minimum age of people you can date. Therefore a relationship is creepy if either of the people in said relationship are you...

(between those ages)

user165474
i could go by this...

Well, it's not creepy :P

user165474
2:13 AM

:D
So it's not creepy, and it depends on your location for legality
Why do you ask? :P

user165474
well i'm asking for a friend (the same person who i spammed with programmer talk :P) bc TNB is a substitute for META, MotherMETA, SO, and everything else

What's MotherMETA, Meta SE?

user165474
yes

user165474
ages: 19, 14

user165474
2:15 AM
*18, 14

That would be pretty weird

user165474
i agree

Can't say I haven't done it though :I dated a senior as a freshman in high school

user165474
but mostly the question is about legality

user165474
@MDXF ah i see

2:17 AM
You know, when I wasn't a complete nerd
And actually had a social life
Nowadays, social life = TNB

user165474
@MDXF wait that was true at some poine in time? (sorry i had to :P)

-_-

user165474
anyway this quickly went offtopic

As usual

user165474
i guess it's TNB ffs :P

2:20 AM
Exactly :D
Well that took an hour

user165474
onice you can actually focus on a project for an hour

Yeah :P
Anyone know how to format a big block of text to be a max of X characters wide using Linux utils?

@MDXF fmt --width=80 file
@MDXF Or just fmt file

No way
Thanks

user165474
@MDXF does anything change if they're both girls about legality? i hope not but it's US/CAN so not sure about the US side

2:32 AM
I'm no law expert but I seriously doubt it changes anything

user165474
ok

user165474
thanks :P i probably know nothing more than you do :P

Yeah, I doubt it

user165474
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ oh well

2:34 AM
Chrome's giving me a privacy error -_-

user165474
@Riker my eyes D:

user165474
Randomly wondering. If you were two create a graph with every facebook user as a node and every friendship as an edge, how many bridges are there? Is it a tiny amount or are there actually considerably many?

That's an interesting thought

@HyperNeutrino 1.94 billion * 100 friends on average / 2 ways of friendship = around 97 billion edges

user165474
how many bridges though?

You know you're a programmer when you write an English essay with Vim...

user165474
lol

user165474
why would you do that ;_;

@MDXF Has to be vim + TeX otherwise you're not a true programmer

@Riker dude's a walking epilepsy warning

user165474
2:42 AM
I use LibreOffice -.- not a true programmer

@ASCII-only My system hates TeX for some reason :P
I have a confession... I may use Nano more than Vim :/
But only because it's standard GNU
And I like testing out Linux distros
It's too hard to always assume a new workstation will have an internet connection so I can install Vim, so I just learned Nano

user165474
I have a confession... I may have never used Vim

@HyperNeutrino GET OUT

@HyperNeutrino This is not true. I could believe you have never intentionally used vim, but that is an impossible statement.

user165474
@Phoenix well actually i have used it before

@ASCII-only You were right the first time

oh lol I always forget which one I spell wrong

3:00 AM
@PhiNotPi done
@HyperNeutrino yes
@PhiNotPi lol

@ASCII-only Wait... are you writing a programming language... that isn't ASCII-only?

@MDXF sorry i had to make a great sacrifice to make it golfy

That's ... completely blasphemous
Your name is a lie :(

@ASCII-only can't get tex to work on my mac
reqiures too many applications, like 3
framework + package + editor

It won't work on my cloud computer

3:04 AM
just get like miktex or something
editor = vim, package + framework = miktex

Huh
just apt-get install miktex for a Linux workstation?

I think so

Okay

Use apt and not apt-get, it's golfier.

E: Unable to locate package miktex :(

3:08 AM
Try latex

Eh I think I'll look more into that when my connection is better

Oh, not miktex, it texlive or tex-live
Ye it's texlive

Ah thanks
Yay that works

texlive-complete if you want

(using apt install -s texlive, -s for simulation so I don't have to wait for it all to download)

3:10 AM
@Phoenix zsh + oh-my-zsh + ai texlive-complete

oh-my-zsh ?

A better shell than bash

IYNSHO... :P

fish + oh-my-fish works too

It's fully compatible with bash, so you don't need to learn anything.

I need people's opinions on something. If I have a decently-long background section that accompanies a PPCG challenge, should I include it before or after the challenge statement? This background section would be relevant to the challenge and would contain useful information for solving the challenge (it's not just some fluff that goes with the challenge).

@Phoenix oh-my-zsh is?

Well the shell is called zsh, oh-my-zsh is an implementation
Ad yes

@Mego After IMO

3:12 AM
@Phoenix No, oh-my-zsh is a plugin system

right sorry

Anonymous
@ASCII-only I'm also interested in the reasoning behind those opinions :)

HA a Vim quine is possible ii^V^V^V^[BDuplxbbpp^[BDuplxbbpp

I'd read the challenge statement to see whether I'm interested, then if it seems interesting I'd bother reading the background.
But maybe you should also have a paraphrase of the statement after as well

3:15 AM
Whaaaat someone has a shorter Vim quine than mine :(

@Mego it largely depends on how interesting the background is.
if its interesting, and fun to read, put it at the start
if not, then at the end

@MDXF If it's udioica then yeah it's not surprising those vimgolfers are a completely different species altogether

I've noticed... and I thought I could write crazy quines

e.g. DjMcMayhem is a cat.

3:24 AM
...oh my.

Still need a character to signify retrieving a variable for charcoal
this is suprisingly hard for me

"retrieving a variable for charcoal" ?

@ASCII-only maybe?

Anyone want to play contact? Everyone left me :(

@Phoenix Already taken

3:28 AM
@ASCII-only : could work, or perhaps @

All ascii is a string literal
@ doesn't work

oh
can it be any unicode char?

Yeah
I mean, fullwidth : and @ would work but they aren't exactly easy to remember

@WheatWizard There are still about 10 users in that room...

@ASCII-only ¦?

3:29 AM
@Phoenix Taken, seperates two strings/two numbers

@MDXF They are in the room but all of them are either inactive or have said they left.

Ah.
tfw people leave their PC but also leave the chat tab open :I

, maybe

@ASCII-only Whoa, that's a great link!!

3:30 AM
0x2610 ☐ "ballot box"

@Phoenix what would be the mnemonic for that

@ConorO'Brien Bad, doesn't render for me

no, it's an actual box

@Phoenix Your character doesn't render for me btw

Oh
Reverse question mark. Kinda bad.

3:31 AM
hmm i'd prefer one with an easy mnemonic

@ASCII-only what is "store variablë?

Yeah

@ConorO'Brien Assign, fullwidth A

how about fullwidth R?
"retrievë"

@ConorO'Brien Fullwidth letters are mostly taken

3:33 AM

@ASCII-only which ones are left?

Plus in this case it's actuall fullwidth US for Utility.SetVariable iirc

and even the lowercase full width letters?

@ConorO'Brien No, but those spaces are taken by variable names (greek lowercase)

is there no more room in the code page?

3:34 AM
seems good

@ConorO'Brien Quite a bit more room, but no more room for 26 contiguous chars

Or «

how about for "collect"

@Phoenix That's Charcoal's left brace

I made my first non-over-simple koth bot which will hopefully actually compete
I have made a non-over-simple koth bot before, but the koth didn't end up happening

3:38 AM
wait hmm anything in here? maybe?

⫷ is a thing

You know, I hate the 5-minute grace period for edits because then you can't see the full golf revision history

cough cough actually cough cough

3:44 AM
^ looks like musical notation.

what is this variable retrieving about?

Charcoal syntax
We're thinking of it

I kinda want to make a general-purpose (non-golfing) language, so I need to do some data mining market research.

market research?
what is this, mathematica? :P

@PhiNotPi You could base it off of BASIC, that's a really basic language to base your non-golfing (therefore basic) language off of

3:54 AM
You could help make VSL a thing.

What sorts of things do you like in a language? I would like to know some language features that aren't necessarily common or mainstream but which you wish were mainstream.
@Phoenix what is VSL?

please come play contact

@DestructibleLemon i'll have time later

@PhiNotPi A language being made by ASCII-only and gaot

@ASCII-only aw man

3:56 AM
@ASCII-only +1 for using Cloud9

@PhiNotPi But the compiler is being written in node so that may be offputting
@PhiNotPi That's what we're doing with VSL
one feature I want quite a bit is more natural syntax

@ASCII-only do you have some kind of document outlining syntax and features?

@ASCII-only I think Downgoat said he wasn't against writing parts of the compiler in other languages and kludging them together. Might have been meaning something else though.
@PhiNotPi If you go to the chatroom, hackmd on the starboard.
Outdated though.

@PhiNotPi Yes but it's really outdated, a more up-to-date spec can be found in te c9 grammars
@Phoenix I think that might have been him saying the stdlib should be in C++

I hope so or it seems like a terrible idea.

4:01 AM
@Phoenix So a LLVM IR stdlib would be a bad idea? :P

Uh, IDK.

I'm still working on the when language...
It's a pain to wrap my head around, because it's in-fix...

@ATaco what's that?

A language where the only flow of control is when statements.

@ASCII-only please consider updating that document

4:04 AM
@PhiNotPi Like half the language has changed.

@ATaco you mean, purely event based?

Yep.
when statements

I've been thinking about a lang like that for a while. I can help you if you want

again, already exists

4:06 AM
How would you write a truth machine, even in pseudocode.
Like as an example

well, the vars start off at 0

Hold on, let me write it...
y = input()
whenever x becomes y{
	print(x)
	x = 1
}
print(x)
x = 1

that has an awful lot of not whens

when is a destructive event, whenever is a non-destructive.

print input
event x: when input is 1 trigger x

4:08 AM
The x=1 in the block doesn't change x, arguably it should be x=0;x=1;

Good point.

@ATaco It'd be nice to have events in the language to fully make use of the event-based idea

Can you be more specific regarding, "Events"?

do you know what an event is in javascript?
specifically the browser version

Well, where I am right now regarding language design, is that I'd be happy to hop on someone else's project if I had a decent idea of the current project status and if our "visions are aligned."

4:12 AM
when foo { ... }
signal(foo)

And so that's kinda why I want some kind of up-to-date description of VSL's intended features and stuff.

> Motivations are speed, conscientiousness, and non-pythonnes

@ConorO'Brien Only vaguely.

But pretend conscientiousness is spelled remotely correctly.

@PhiNotPi if you don't hop on anyone else's project, feel free to take a look at stacked. I'm rewriting it in C++. I have the language design down, but its subject to change. (warning, it's stack-based)

4:15 AM
@Phoenix I ... can't.

window.addEventListener("custom", (e) => console.log(`custom event, sent: ${e.data}`));
var myEvent = new CustomEvent("custom", { data: "some data" });
window.dispatchEvent(myEvent);

intx13C I think this is the quickest way to eject a CD. #include <stdio.h> void main() { printf("Erasing C:\\\n"); printf("(Eject CD to cancel)\n"); while(1) { printf("."); fflush(NULL); sleep(2); } }

4:31 AM
@Dennis That does suggest a good amount of variability. If you want to make a new challenge to output any valid sequence, go for it.

OK, will do. :)

Right now I'm reading about the Lucid programming language: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_(programming_language)

The way I understand it, is that literally every program in the language is an "online" algorithm.
AKA deals with continuous streams of input/output
And I think that kinda of stuff could be really powerful, but there are some weaknesses in the way they appear to have everything set up (in terms of usability)

4:52 AM
I tried testing the loaded rps koth with my bot but it did not work ;_;

What does $_ in ruby do? I can't find a guide because google ignore those characters

Thanks!

Welcome :)

5:10 AM
Is there a way in ruby to get everything output up to the current moment?

not a golfy one
You could monkey-patch $STDOUT and perhaps a few extra methods around.

I don't need a golfy one, I was just wanting to put something into the TIO footer as verification
mokey-patching anything it beyond my skill though.

Monkey-patching is easy. class << $STDOUT; ...; end

Idk how to write classes though.
Only today I've moved beyond puts gets.gsub(/foo/,'bar') in my Ruby knowledge.

@Phoenix class ... end

5:18 AM
def ... to create new methods inside a class, @var to access the instance variables from within methods

I assume the def is a pythonic def but with end?

It's a fairly standard method definition
def plus(bar); self + bar; end

I come from the land of C-like

Here's an untested start:
class << $STDOUT
  def initialize; @log = ""; super; end
  def <<(str); @log.append str; super; end
  attr_reader :log
end
wait, no, modifying initialize after the fact won't work.
I guess it's best to focus on the methods you'll be outputting with

You could define a $log earlier in the program, I suppose.

5:30 AM
not before $STDOUT is initialized

You could overwrite << to append to $log instead of an instance variable.
@JanDvorak It's not that necessary, I could just not include the extra output. Thanks for trying to help tho.

but then again Kernel#puts doesn't use $STDOUT.<< anyways
@Phoenix ಠ_ಠ

uh, sorry?

I mean: yeah, that would be the ideal approach
cv-pls no-mvce ^^

@ASCII-only What is _?
It looks wrong

@Phoenix _ ? LetterQ basically means char if LetterQ[char]

Probably NYE error.

@Phoenix NYE?

Not yet implemented

Charcoal has mathics interop?

Please rename that language. It's confusing.

@JanDvorak Which language
@Phoenix No, why would it work in Charcoal then :P

Charcoal HQ

@ASCII-only oic, but the link you sent was confusing.

5:39 AM
@JanDvorak Fair enough, please give ideas (also we'd need consensus)
