Q: Please suggest the correct logic for implementing this program in python

KHUSBU SINHAWrite a function matched(s) that takes as input a string s and checks if the brackets "(" and ")" in s are matched: that is, every "(" has a matching ")" after it and every ")" has a matching "(" before it. Your function should ignore all other symbols that appear in s. Your function should ret...

user214599
@Tux Here Now u have 1000 reps

\o/
exactly 1000

@TùxCräftîñg I have performed the final blow.

user214599
12:07 PM
@zyabin nope I did

> put on hold as off-topic by ... , zyabin101

user214599
@zya aha

i only have 985 rep on ppcg meta ಠ_ಠ

@Sherlock9 Let f denote a step forward, b a step backward in the collatz sequence. The pattern b->f cannot be in a shortest path, as it is the identity (f is undoing b in any case.) So the shortest path can only consist of patterns f->f, f->b and b->b. That means again that the shortest path is always of the form f->f->...->f or b->b->...->b or f->...->f->b->...->b

DerpfacePythonI wanna be the very best... Wow, there's so many Pokemon in my Pokedex! Well, there seems too many... I wish there was some good way of sorting all of them! Can you help? Given a list of Pokemon with their stats - level and HP - and a sorting criterion, output the sorted list. An example inpu...

@NewMainPosts ninja'd
why PPCG get so many gimmetehcodez questions :/
@NewMainPosts ;_;

Presumably means lots of people are finding us through searches, which is a good thing if it brings in useful new users too...

so my reader mode userscript says the put on hold thing is an article
idk if i should add an exception for that

12:22 PM
@TùxCräftîñg Is gimmetehcod the penguin equivalent of gimmetehcodez? :)

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

5 close votes in 8 minutes - good work all!

MOD ABUSE!!!11!!!!!11!!!!ELEVEN!!!!!!!11!!!!1!!!!1

lol

12:32 PM
@TùxCräftîñg !! === 11 === ELEVEN in PPCG's type system

@MᴀʀsUʟᴛᴏʀ i see
i have 42 posted answers

i tried flagging, but it said it's already closed
i were 2 l8 m8

@flawr I undeleted my answer. You can migrate your comments over there

@betseg Yup, it's already closed. I have dealt the final blow.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Time to pay up

Oh wow it actually made it

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ haha! Time to pay up!

wow today the first posts review queue is flooded

Hopefully this will motivate certain other users to change theirs as well

12:56 PM
@LeakyNun wait, need to do something first

@zyabin101 i tried flagging 7 minutes after op

@MᴀʀsUʟᴛᴏʀ alright
@zyabin101 do my challenge in your language

@LeakyNun I don't think I can run UGL on my phone.

@zyabin101 write and I'll test it

@orlp I cannot believe it, but I beat ya by 1 byte=)

12:59 PM
@Zgarb how does _ work? I tried p\3i on input [1 2 3 4 5] to get all substrings of length 3 but it doesn't work, so I assume I need a _ somewhere in there?

@LeakyNun I'm not sure it's polite to just tell people "write an answer to my challenge". You could ask. Or say please
6

@quartata okay, done

@ASCII-only XD I didn't realize how literal you were being, Conor

@Sherlock9 wat no Conor isn't online

1:03 PM
@ASCII-only you changed name? O_O

@Sherlock9 You can still ping Conor

@ASCII-only New username, who dis?

@Sherlock9 Figure out who you can't ping anymore

@LeakyNun I answered it in PowerShell. Does that count?

@Sherlock9 Or just look at network profile
seriously why do people not look at network profile

1:04 PM
@ASCII-only Mᴀʀs Uʟᴛᴏʀ why you change your name?

@ASCII-only That's easier :D

@LeakyNun idk? quartata was complaining about non-ascii usernames

Did you get a look at my VIC cipher decoder question?

@ASCII-only so you can do my cmc now?

@Sherlock9 not really, as you can probably tell I don't golf often

1:06 PM
Hi @ASCII-only =)

It's not really a "Chat Mini-Challenge" if it's posted to the main page ...

@TimmyD shh...

Note: I am not Conor

@LeakyNun "Shh?" You're the one who linked it! :p

@TimmyD lol

1:07 PM
someone pls pin/star that or something so people don't mistake me for conor

@ASCII-only Actually, I was not aware of that
brb

@ASCII-only Nope.

Timmy D. I am disappointed your patch the paragraph did not get a lot of attention

@Sherlock9 but i have like insanely low rep

@ASCII-only Do you want to stop @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ from achieving his goal????? ಠ_ಠ

1:07 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ is ur username ascii only yet?

@flawr No, there's nothing stopping him from changing to the same username

Is it okay to submit a second language answer to the same question?

Though I suppose pings would get annoying, but replies should still be okay

Yes @Winny

@ASCII-only I look not at rep, only at how often I see you in chat

1:08 PM
@RohanJhunjhunwala I am as well. People seemed to really like it in the Sandbox (four or five upvotes in the span of 24 hours, and a few clarification comments), but then only two Python answers until your Java answer. /shrug

So I'm not very aware of the power dynamics (or lack thereof) in PPCG at the moment

@Timy D, i did like the beautfiul poetry it produced

@RohanJhunjhunwala Do my challenge?
@Winny yes

@Sherlock9 I thought we were 100% clean energy.

Again, I'm not aware of the energy sources, energy requirements or power dynamics of PPCG. Your guess is as good as mine :D
@TimmyD I'll take a look at that later. Seems interesting

1:16 PM
Do code-only answers get downvoted automatically these days?

@LeakyNun need to sleep now, so no time to do a whitespace answer in a reasonable amount of time, sorry
@Winny Depends, I guess?

@ASCII-only alright

Complicated ones in esoteric languages, definitely

/me browses meta for details

@Winny I rarely upvote without a good explanation, but I've never downvoted for lack of one, only for other reasons

1:18 PM
@Winny What browser are you on?

@ASCII-only firefox but why the interest? :)

"ASCII-only Firefox" sounds like a horrible browser ;-)

keeping it classy :p

@Winny You should get GreaseMonkey and click here for the /me command (and a lot more commands that you probably won't use, I use it and it's very nice)

@ASCII-only thanks - though if i'm not mistaken, wasn't /me added to the chat webapp earlier? Maybe I'm confusing this with something else (!)

1:24 PM
/me says that there's no /me command :/

@Leaky Nun on it

@RohanJhunjhunwala nice

@ASCII-only has anyone mistaken you for @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ yet...?
@TimmyD Sounds like a challenge idea to me...

@ASCII-only I like the profile pic

@flawr 2!

1:34 PM
@LeakyNun oh thanks for the bounty, btw :)

@MartinEnder well, I promised it.

@LeakyNun done

@RohanJhunjhunwala seen

its more verbose than java :(

@MartinEnder I'm curious about how much Mrs. Ender knows about PPCG

1:37 PM
Probably far too much

Mrs. Merrill for example, knows that I like spending time on stack exchange, but doesn't really care much more than that :)

@NathanMerrill well she's aware of it and the fact that I'm a mod (and that I spend a lot of time on it). :P ... I also occasionally show her some challenges when there's some cool graphical output or something.

@RohanJhunjhunwala What does if b a mean?

1:41 PM
if(b<0)goto a;
whoops
if(b>0)goto a;
@Leaky Nun there is no explicit boolean type

@R.Kap looks like your latest rectangle challenge worked!

@RohanJhunjhunwala alright

Hmm, I should make a lang based on code golfing. :3

@zyabin aka golfscript

@Zgarb bug report: r called with character arguments doesn't result in a string

1:42 PM
@RohanJhunjhunwala Nope.

@zyabin most languages on this sight are explicitly designed for code golfing
*site

As in, variables might be declared as [Golfer x] and changed with Outgolf x by n bytes, or Golf answer of x by n bytes...

@RohanJhunjhunwala How do I install your language?

^^ @RohanJhunjhunwala

@LeakyNun @zyabin101 on the github repo there is a java file which iss a java interpeter
compile that file into a .class or a .jar
and then run it in the same directory as a S.I.L.O.S program

1:46 PM
@RohanJhunjhunwala I can't try your lang. :|

it will prompt for a file name, and then run the program
@zyabin101 why? don't have java :(

someone should make their suser name upgoat
@Leaky Nun should I make an online interpreter?
I have no clue how though

@RohanJhunjhunwala sure

1:49 PM
um um i guess ill learn some javacript

@Poke m.wolframalpha.com/input/… but thats wrong...im disappointed

@betseg I tried :[

@RohanJhunjhunwala what is the difference between Silos.java and Java interpreter?

m.wolframalpha.com/input/… yep. That's wrong.

Downgoat was Upgoat at one point
Pretty sure

1:58 PM
@Leaky Nun none whooops :( let me check which one is the latest
@Leaky Nun silos.java was the latest revision. deleted the other one

@RohanJhunjhunwala ok

WHY ARE KITTIES SO FLUFFY

@MartinEnder Thanks, I'll look into it later. My laptop charger seems to have broken. :/

@LeakyNun main(i){for(;++i<puts("**********"););}
this is magic :)

@orlp nice

2:09 PM
nowhere does it mention how many iterations it does

@orlp go post it

(hint: on GCC puts returns the number of characters written)
@LeakyNun it is posted

that is genius

3
A: Print a 10 by 10 grid of asterisks

orlpC (gcc), 41 39 bytes main(i){for(;++i<puts("**********"););}

@orlp it is upvoted

2:18 PM
Ahhhhh. That feeling of relief when your plate of "other stuff" finally empties and you can get back to working on tasks and bugs.

@Rainbolt So you can do my challenge! \o/

@MartinEnder You do, and apparently _ has several bugs at the moment. I'll add them to my list.

@LeakyNun There are quite a few similar Python answers on your challenge lol

Thanks. :)

@Rainbolt not sure what to do about it. People are too original.

2:22 PM
i am searching obscure esolangs to do your challenge

@TùxCräftîñg try malbolge. it's fun!

@Poke ಠ_ಠ

it's also the 8th circle of hell
literally.

Lol. I Googled "8th circle of hell programming language" (without quotes)
Basically all Malbolge results
Hang on a second... I get the same results for "6th circle of hell programming language" and "7th circle of hell programming language". I call foul play.

anyway this is the definition of hell

2:27 PM
@Rainbolt it goes all the way down

I want to make a challenge with surreal numbers

Lol, salt-vote on my BF answer
7
A: Print a 10 by 10 grid of asterisks

Leaky NunBrainfuck, 47 bytes ++++++++++[->++++>+>+<<<]>++>[-<..........>>.<] Try it online! ++++++++++[->++++>+>+<<<] set the tape to 40 10 10 >++> set the tape to 42 10 10 [-<..........>>.<] come on

@orlp go ahead, I'll be very interested

@LeakyNun >.<

Do BF answers get a lot of downvotes just because of the name of the language?

@Rainbolt No, just look at my +8/-1 BF answer above.
@Rainbolt People don't really fucking care if we swear.

2:29 PM
Yea, I can't see why it got a downvote

@Rainbolt It was a salt-vote, presumably by one of the people who downvoted my question (because of the time interval)

@Rainbolt honestly it should be censored

@LeakyNun Flag as 'muricans do care

Br**nfuck
9

@flawr go ahead

2:30 PM
@orlp Censorship should be optional IMO

@LeakyNun I'm not 'murican :D

Profanity filter on off switch

How is fucking a profanity? It is a necessary thing for humanity to survive!!

+11/-6 on my challenge
the salt-vote is real
@flawr 'coz some people don't wanna fucking survive?

I wrote code for asterisks thing, but I can't test if it works :(

2:34 PM
@betseg in which language?

Nice, my laptop charger fixed itself! I'm in the middle of nowhere so getting a replacement would've been hard.

@LeakyNun Emojicode

@orlp Good. Censor out that nasty Artificial Intelligence. :D

@betseg and why can't you test it?

@LeakyNun i can't find an online compiler and i can't compile the compiler on my phone

2:35 PM
@betseg alright, wait a second
@betseg ugh, no windows for me
I guess you'd have to find another one to help you

@Rainbolt I agree with his form of censorship. Everybody needs that.

why on the earth Machine Code is on esolang

22 hours ago, by Cᴏɴᴏʀ O'Bʀɪᴇɴ
Iff this message reaches thirty stars, I will make my name ASCII-only.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ por favor

NOOOOOOOO
he's asleep

@Dennis hi

2:45 PM
(removed)

can someone explain me how the MISC-32 can address 16GB
the star diseappar

Rather than removing messages can you just not say them in the first place?

ಠ_ಠಠ_ಠಠ_ಠ

@TùxCräftîñg because 16GB = 2^7MB = 2^10 KB = 2^13 bytes = 2^16 bits

Personally, I would consider 10 removed messages in a minute to be "noise"

2:50 PM
@LeakyNun 2^32 = 4GB

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan alright, move them to the trash can
@TùxCräftîñg why?

I can't. I ain't a mod

@LeakyNun open a calculator

Because it's approximately 4.2 billion

and 2^16 = 64K btw

2:51 PM
@TùxCräftîñg I just computed to you that 2^16 bits = 16GB

@LeakyNun ^^

@TùxCräftîñg and rather than telling me which step I was wrong, you just asserted to me that 2^32 = 4GB

because it's true

google say me that 2^32 = 4GiB

2:58 PM
@TùxCräftîñg oh right, I saw my mistake

Haha, Omg that's amazing.
I might have to edit that in.
Ugh. Why did this user rollback my edit?

Q: Does code that crash compilers/interpreters should systemically be treated as malicious?

user2284570Despite having What qualifies as malicious code?, the consensus seems really unclear on that point, because this question seems to be valid, and that one isn’t. In the current case, please note the parsers of such programs tend to be designed to be insecure, so it’s easy to google for examples...

That title is not very grammatical, but I don't want an edit war.

"not very grammatical" is an understatement

Should I edit again?

3:12 PM
I've seen that one before, I can't even remotely understand how to program anything in it

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Don't.
If the OP rolls it back, it'll be an edit war.

Well, twice isn't really an edit war. It'll be if I continue after that.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ u haz 30 ⭐
>u haz 30 ... white boxes?

no it's a star

Certainly not a SE star.

3:15 PM
You might try to discourse with the user.

ik it's a unicode star

so, when generating a Sieve of Eratosthenes, you can choose to increment in ways such that your Sieve doesn't include multiples of primes below X

U+2B50 more exactly
:D:D:D:D

you can generate that incrementer before hand
so, the question is "at what value of X does it get more efficient to simply generate the sieve and to stop generating the incrementer
aka, using a Sieve to generate a Sieve

a language where everything throw a error

It does output through STDERR

3:24 PM
I don't think you can take input through stderr

Nah probably not

syntactic dont like 8 spaces as indentation in a python code

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan the program takes input by opening another process and reading its stderr

Input through a dialog box saying, "Do you want to report this error to Microsoft"

@TùxCräftîñg shudders why would you do something like that?!

timgfxIt should: Encrypt Decrypt Encrypt in another way every time you start it (So it should generate a new encryption pattern). It should support the characters 33-127 and 160-255 (http://www.ascii.cl/htmlcodes.htm) I did this in 3,621 bytes while not trying to keep it small. Good Luck!

@NewMainPosts i havent seen something more unclear

First post, 2 DVs and 5 VTCs and no comments with an explanation
Seems legit

@TùxCräftîñg that's horrible. Do this: github.com/DJMcMayhem/dotFiles/blob/…

3:29 PM
i have configured vim to have 8 spaces of indentation

@TùxCräftîñg kill it with fire
2

user214599
@mınxomaτ ._.

You might as well just use tabs. (shudders in horror)

tabs are evil [citation needed]

3:31 PM
Tabs are better than 8 spaces of indentation. With tabs, I can at least make the indentation smaller

@TùxCräftîñg s/tabs/tabs and spaces other than four

A fire tornado is better than 8 spaces of indentation.
3

Or two, depending on the language.

also, why do we do 4 spaces of indentation

I think 3 spaces is a good amount

@Downgoat When you come back can you check the stats on how many upvotes cheddar answers get in average?
(or anyone else for that matter)

Oh man. I'm one answer away from code golf silver badge, and 90 rep away from 10k.

1
Q: Is this number Loeschian?

Luis MendoA positive integer k is a Loeschian number if k can be expressed as i^2 + j^2 + i*j for i, j integers (^ represents power). For example, the first positive Loeschian numbers are: 1 (i=1, j=0); 3 (i=j=1); 4 (i=2, j=0); 7 (i=2, j=1); 9 (i=-3, j=3); ... Note that i, j for a given k are not uniq...

@Dennis so close to a dennis number

Most of the programming I do everyday is C++. I don't care anymore what programmer prefers what indention or formatting. Before each commit, every source file is processed by clang-format with a company-wide rule. So everyone can use whatever they like and the codebase is consistent.

3:39 PM
@Dennis Congrats on 90k, Dennis!
21

@mınxomaτ how does that deal with multi-line function definitions/calls?

@NathanMerrill Depends on the rule. We use Google's clang format rules for the most part.

Challenge idea: calculate the number of classes of primitive positive definite binary quadratic forms of discriminant D = -4n; or equivalently the class number of the quadratic order of discriminant D = -4n.
