Q: Format a string

MCMasteryDescription This is a very simple challenge. Your task is to take a string as input, and format it so people like to read it. Then print the formatted string to the stdout. Formatting means to convert to lower case, and capitalize the first letter of each word. See the test cases below. Test Ca...

@LeakyNun Y U edit my code?

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan The U+0016 was gone

I guess that's fine. But now it looks like an 18 byte solution.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I thought <C-V> is standard notation

For vim. But vim uses keystrokes, whereas V uses bytes.

5:15 AM
FWIW, I was just about to ask about it in here.

Then what do you use?

Ask about what? My solution?

It and the edit. What you guys are talking about now.

Yeah I didn't understand what the change was at first
I legit thought you just changed his answer

V uses unprintable characters (for the time being). <C-v> is vim standard notation for control+v which corresponds to 0x16 (the byte I used)

5:17 AM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan It was 0x16 but whatever

Oh sorry, yes I meant 0x16

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan So create your notation.

idk, what do you guys think is the best solution? usually I just provide a hexdump.

I guess that's all well and good then, but a note about it would be appreciated, to avoid confusion. At first glance the byte count just looks wrong.

^
If it was VI/M I would have understood, but I'm not familiar with V

5:19 AM
@Liam It's just a fork of vim, but more concise

Reminds me of Dennis having to explain the encoding for Jelly every single post for months

Sort of. It's not really a fork of vim since I'm not changing vim code at all.
It creates an instance of vim and communicates with that.

@Liam I think the APL golfers still do :P

@LeakyNun That doesn't have the property I mentioned, at least not to the same extent. If 1110XXXX is missing, the next three bytes will be interpreted as three different ASCII characters.

@Dennis which doesn't affect the bytes around him

5:22 AM
@Liam sighs All my Jelly recent answers have a link to the code page now, and people still ask about the byte count in comments or even edit my answers to "correct" it.

@Dennis Do you have any thoughts on the best way to notate my answer?
TIO get's the byte count right

@LeakyNun True, but UTF-8 wouldn't produce gibberish.

@Dennis It would only produce gibberish if every first byte of the 4-byte encoding is lost

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan If you use unprintables, a hexdump is probably the best option. TIO counts characters btw.
@LeakyNun No, I mean three bytes of gibberish.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan use a different codepage
@Dennis three bytes isn't gibberish
at least not that much

5:24 AM
Yeah, but the byte count is also right since I don't abuse multibyte chars.
@LeakyNun Working on that.

Uh.... ok, so technically the last commit to a language was thirty minutes before the challenge was asked, but it's the OP's own language. I'm gonna call shenanigans here.
Ok, he added (non-competing) to it. Meh.

Grrr. I can do it in 9 bytes but it's bugging out on me. gu$Ó¼./Õ°

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan is this V :D?

Yeah, it is. It doesn't work though. D:

5:39 AM
;-;
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan btw tried V with non-empty program, still hangs

Do you want a more detailed explanation?
Yeah, I saw that.
I have no clue what's causing that.

@Upgoat I'm not sure if it counts as a "small" rule change when it changes the byte count of the leading answer by over sixfold.

@Bigtoes what answer?If you're talking about the pyth answer I'd say it's fine. It's not like any effort was put into that single-operator answer

Eh, whatever. I'll just downvote and move on I guess. Not worth fussing about any more to me.

@Bigtoes idk, how's that different from all other posts? :P

5:44 AM
What post are you guys talking about?

@Upgoat Because I have a defensible reason for downvoting this one, unlike all the others :P

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan I know

Haha, I was probably never going to end up doing it until upgoat raised an issue on github and it made me want to work on it more.

I figured out the magical command in git to solve every problem ever:
git merge --squash <commit sha> -X theirs
you will never any problems with this commit

5:48 AM
Yep, that's exactly what the creators had in mind for every commit.

well no one likes fast-forward anyway :P
and why tf are conflicts a thing when the commits are on the same branch

Just delete the whole repository and start fresh each time.

ಠ_ಠ <insert relevant xkcd>

Better than git: Just use a shared folder and overwrite it with edited files >_>
Ok, ok, maybe not better than git. Definitely better then cvs though.

but.. but.. how to branch? how to tag? how to cry in frustration because git rebase fucked up two weeks of work?

5:52 AM
@Upgoat branches are created with subdirectories. Just append _1, _2 and so on

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan
Use a heart to mark the unprintable — Leaky Nun 23 mins ago

@Bigtoes oh god
> evaluation recursively accesses accessors to acces the
accessors accessing the accessed proprety
10/10 best commit message

Better yet, don't use version control at all. Real programmers don't screw up their code.
<_<

@Bigtoes no but branches are important
if I want to devlop two features in parallel while developing tests, that would be impossible without git

Well, I just literally found the stupidest bug of all time. I can't enter a < character in V.
ಠ_ಠ Seriously, what the fuck?

5:56 AM
@Upgoat I think the word "impossible" is a bit of a stretch here. People did code before git, you know.

yeah using... svn... duh duh duuuhhhhhh

Before any of them.
In teams, even

It's like saying it's impossible to find a local hobby shop because you forgot your smartphone at home. I mean, sure, it might be more convenient if you had it, but it's not the end of the world.

Some programming nostalgia: textfiles.com/programming

CMC: add one without using integer. "9"->"10", "19"->"20"

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan It's not even my bug. It's a neovim bug.

@Bigtoes well i am goat so i live on farm so everything is in barn house so i dont understand this analogy :P

What the hell?!

6:01 AM
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan ಠ_ಠ Actually, what the fuck?
pls update your lagnuages

@Upgoat Umm... it's like trying to find a tin can to chew on without the farmer leading you to it. It takes longer, but you can still do it.

@Upgoat
> It's not even my bug. It's a neovim bug.
Well, there goes my 7 byte solution. :(

@Bigtoes are you saying goats need farmer??? >:| this is very sterotypical of you and I'm very offended. I am my own farmer >:| >:| >:|

@Upgoat Then you are a farmer and a goat. You should still be able to relate. Not all goats are their own farmer after all. Don't assume all goats have an equal standard of living. That's the truly offensive thing here.

@Bigtoes :|

some goats are free to roam the wild though. Soudns fun

Some goats get tied up in the barn and enslaved for milk.
To make cheese. And you glibly mock them by naming your language cheddar o_o

oh my god thats horrible
@Bigtoes D: D: D: D: D: ;-;- ;-;-;-; @Downgoat y u do dis ;-;

Ok, I guess my work here is done.

brb starting civil war 2.0 this time to free gaots so bad typing can rule the world

ono i just relized i kept my git password in icloud note file >_>
now everyone can hack me ;-;

That is one of the stupidest problems I've ever ran into.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ @MᴀʀsUʟᴛᴏʀ @Quill @DrGreenEggsandIronMan Version 0.2a (pre-release) of Cheddar is out! This includes recursive accessors (e.g. namespaces, static props, etc.) and for loops now working. Any testing and issue reporting is appreciated :3 and if anyone wants to help start making stuff for stdlib e.g. Math namespace that would also be greatly appreciated :3

@Bigtoes Advice that continues not to be followed since July '82.

6:15 AM
So very true

@Upgoat what's going to be in stdlib?

@Quill that's the standard library. So Math, string stuff etc.

Anonymous
@Quill congrats on becoming a mod!

@Mego you're a bit late :P

I haven't been around chat for a few days. It's news to me :P

6:18 AM
@Upgoat So were you :P

Ah, finally past that point of being tired. Now in the "slightly in trance" phase of sleep deprivation.

Oh, you too? Nice.

@Upgoat Oh, well if we're congratulating for things that haven't happened yet... Congratulations on your firstborn!
Seriously, I hope dhje has a long and prosperous life, filled with every manner of happiness.

6:22 AM
Does that mean I should congratulate you on your upcoming sobriety? :P

@Bigtoes Congrats on using better language for golfing then Java! :P
(or do we have to do things that will actually happen)

@Mego Me? Nah, I haven't even been drinking. I'm not actually quite sure why that is though.

@Mego thanks :D

@Upgoat If that's the case, I have to take back my congratulations :P

@Bigtoes I can't drink. Antibiotics + prednisone + upper respiratory infection :(

6:23 AM
@Upgoat if you do up a few examples of how you want it, I'll jump on later and write some up :)

However, the combination of those three, along with cold medicine, have made me high as a kite for the past few days

Ouch. Good luck with that, I know from experience that it sucks for a few days.

@Mego are you sure they gave you penguin medicine and not human medicine accidentally?
That has happened to me more than once :|

Anonymous
@Upgoat I said cold medicine :P

@Upgoat Define "better". My [code-golf] scores average about twice yours :P

Anonymous
6:26 AM
It's not like they gave me temperate medicine or anything

@Mego oh, I like hot medicine better :/
@Bigtoes ;-; y haet "script" at end of java

because it makes it worse ;)

;-;

Anonymous
It's a well known fact that appending more characters to a language's name makes the new language worse

@Upgoat TNB has gotten way too zoomorphic ._.

6:29 AM

@Mego Prepending characters is even worse. Just look at what happens when you add "Objective" at the beginning.

@Mego I didn't know C++ was worse than C

Anonymous
See: C -> C#, C++; Java -> JavaScript; J -> Jolf, Japt

Anonymous
@Bigtoes flags as offensive

Oh, we got an Objective C user in the house. Everyone look while you can; they're rare in the wild.

Anonymous
6:30 AM
No, I meant even mentioning Objective C is offensive enough to deserve a flag :P

@Mego @CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Is Jolf based on J?

@Mego Oh. Well then carry on with the flagging.

Anonymous
@Upgoat I definitely never said anything about "based on"

@Mego I think @quartata likes Objective C
@Mego ik, I was just wondering

Someone: Write my merge message!

6:31 AM
because Conor likes J
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan no pls

I don't want to write something useful

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan Just make it useful, split in half, and zipper them together.
That way they can tell it's a merge.

Anonymous
@Upgoat quartata likes a lot of weird stuff. We try not to hold it against him.

@DrGreenEggsandIronMan -1 i didnt have period at the end

6:33 AM
mod plz edit

Should you be able to write over standard lib namespaces?
@DrGreenEggsandIronMan just do git commit --amend
e.g.

Anonymous
@Upgoat Sure, but provide a mechanism for reloading the stdlib

// Math is math library
print Math.Pi //is 3.141592 etc.
// should this be allowed?:
Math = nil

@Upgoat Whatever. Time to roast some chevon.

@Upgoat Why on earth would you allow that?

6:34 AM
@HelkaHomba OH MY GOD WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT YOU MONSTER. THAT IS HORRIBLE
The only one psycho enough to do such a sick thing is Markya

Apparently not.

;-; @HelkaHomba y u do dis ;-;
y u eat my brethren

Anonymous
I had to google what chevon is

Anonymous
Now I'm hungry (again)

> What is the world's most popular meat? I’ll bet a lot of you guessed chicken or pork. Some of you probably thought beef. Surprise! In the United States, we tend to consume chicken as our white meat of choice and beef as our red meat, but 63 percent of the world's population eats goat meat.
It's very nutritious.

6:38 AM
@Upgoat If it helps, Chrome thought "chevon" was misspelt, so maybe it's on your side. (Though Chrome fails at lots of words, like "splendiferous" or "misspelt".)

It always complains about downvoting for some reason too :/

Anonymous
I ended up just turning off the spellchecker in Chrome

I've been slowly adding words to the dictionary when they come up

@HelkaHomba Don't play right into their trap like that o_o

Anonymous
Spellchecking is nice on mobile, when I'm more likely to fat-finger the stupid virtual keyboard, but I've been proficient at typing with a real keyboard for nearly two decades now. If I type something, I mostly likely mean it to be typed like that.

Yea, the auto-backspace function of Fingers 2.0 is really nice.

question: What makes a mousepad a good mouse pad?
@Bigtoes ;-; pls retract CV and Ungeobits question pls

Nothing makes a good mousepad unless you're still using a mouse with a rollerball.

@Mego But you might not know how to spell every word you want to say. e.g. am I misspelling "dishabille", "schadenfruede", and "wrapscallion" or not? :P

I wrap scallions sometimes.

Anonymous
6:48 AM
@HelkaHomba I know the second and third are misspelled. I don't care about the first :P

What functions should there be in the Math namespace?
I have pi and phi atm

Anonymous
I know "schadenfreude" from Avenue Q :P

sin, cos, etc?

log, sqrt

6:49 AM
those are ops

e, i?

Anonymous
Those are definitely functions

@Upgoat pi is a function?

@Mego why not ops?
@Bigtoes :P I meant items

Anonymous
Because "ops" is ill-defined, unlike functions

Anonymous
6:50 AM
So you mean constants?

@HelkaHomba I'm looking for realistic proposals :P

PI, PHI, E, I (if you're going to include complex stuff in the Math library)
