5:00 AM
@Upgoat Wait how do you listen on every port/use no port

@MarsUltor on my old server?

Yeah

@MarsUltor put router in bridge mode, have 3 hour heated call with Comcast asking why your internet is borked, open all the ports you want

@MarsUltor Related: sciencevsmagic.net/geo

TIL about Anders Kaseorg. No wonder he's at the top of the rankings on the Euclid game. :P

5:03 AM
@Upgoat strawpoll.me/10329585 (How many computers do you use?)

@HelkaHomba does this include remote computers? i.e. servers

Why do you include phones?

They're basically mini-computers.

@HelkaHomba Three for me: laptop, phone, work PC

5:04 AM
Oops I miscounted

What if I have a raspberry pi that I haven't used yet?

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ No. Only things that you are bound to use at least once a week

Then it isn't a Raspberry Pi, it's more like a Blueberry Phi.

Yeah I forgot one - one of those 3s should be a 4

5:06 AM
Although my laptop is not functioning correctly, so that might become 3 soon.
It wasn't a very nice laptop to begin with, just an extra one I found lying around.

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Counting all "computers" currently owned (even if unused) might be another interesting poll

Including game consoles is sure to double my count :P

but where do you draw the line? A microwave? The computer in a car? A digital watch?

@Sp3000 I guess I expected 3 and 4 to the low end around here :|

@Sp3000 Never owned a console.
My PC is all I need. <3

5:08 AM
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ How about: Physical screen + keyboard-like input device + capable of running any general program (without ridiculous amounts of tinkering, e.g. microwave)

A while back I counted how many Apple products are in my house. There are about 12.

@HelkaHomba My 4 are phone, tablet, laptop, desktop. I don't really need any more, but if I did have any spares they'd be number crunching right now (which is what the desktop was doing til recently).

@HelkaHomba :| TIL I use too many computers

^ are you the 6?

yeah :/

5:09 AM
I feel sorry for your power strip

@AlexA. Either you have more family members than me or wow, cos that's a lot (we have... 8 I think? Counting an old unused Shuffle)

damn, I never realized how hot ethernet cabled get... how much data has it been transferring?!?

@HelkaHomba Would you count one of these?
Definitely a computer, but can't run general programs.

@Sp3000 It's just my girlfriend and me... >_>

... wow

5:10 AM
@HelkaHomba Especially here on a barn where internet isn't so hot

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ No I guess. Too specific.

@Sp3000 She grew up on Apple products though, so a lot of those are her ancient ones

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Don't worry, you're not missing out on much :) Except rattles off list of console-only games :P

I guess 9 are hers because only 3 are mine.

@Sp3000 #pcmasterrace, #flamewars

5:11 AM
9's sure a lot for one person, does she have every generation of iPod or something?
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ #zerotimedilemma #rhythmheaven

She has 2 old laptops, 2 old iPhones, and an old iPod... those are her ancient things

@Sp3000 I don't understand what those octothorpes mean.

Neither, I'm just trying to fit in with these "cool" kids, whatever that means

#cool #kids

5:13 AM
@AlexA. Oh right, laptops. The one major Apple line we don't have in our house.

Do you have an iMac?
≥1

If you count my whole family, it's like 15.

Nope, just the small things
No Macs or Macbooks

Oh, so just the devices
Like iPods/Pads/Phones
?

Yeah
(also I'm counting 4 people, so I guess we don't really have that many devices)

5:15 AM
I still don't see the appeal of iPads. It's like an iPhone that's easier to see but you can't make calls on it and it doesn't fit in your pocket.

For me, it's just another gaming console (a few Japanese rhythm arcade games, e.g. Jubeat and Reflec beat, have iPad versions) that's an occasional internet browser

I think the iPad is literally the only Apple product line that neither my girlfriend nor I have.
@Sp3000 Couldn't you just as easily play those on an iPhone?

Do DVD players count?
I think they have CPUs

@HelkaHomba Do my cochlear implant processors count? :P

5:18 AM
@AlexA. If your are certain
@El'endiaStarman er, sure

Does a keyboard count?

@HelkaHomba Mine am not certain

music, not computer

@HelkaHomba Do I count calculators?

5:19 AM
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ yes (assuming electronic :P)

@Sp3000 O_O

@MarsUltor hmm, I guess so. That will skew things

I guessed at 14
That's for my girlfriend and me both

I said 9, but that's only when I get into the more obscure ones. (e.g. TI calculator, old ipod, keyboard, etc.)

For just me I think it's like 4

5:21 AM
I think it's too hard to count for me, so I'll probably skip that poll

Do I count the 8 dev boards collecting in my desk at work? :P
And the oscilliscope?

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ only if you personally own them

"I'll probably skip that poll" Somewhere a survey statistician is crying.

Drat, that's a no.

@Sp3000 Was it over 3000?

5:22 AM
is it bad to create git repo on production server?

Hah, no not that much

@Upgoat No

No

A lot easier if you want to work on it locally

@MarsUltor ok, but now scp is copying a bunch of hashes

5:23 AM
uh
what kind of hash?

It makes more sense to maintain a clone of the repo on the server

@Upgoat What for?
Wait ^^

@Sp3000 That'd be like all the computers in central Australia ;)

@HelkaHomba Since you're doing all of these polls, how many do you own?

5:24 AM
I wouldn't be surprised if you were right there

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ 10, though I only use 3 or 4 commonly
Actually I forgot an old laptop

@HelkaHomba If it's broken, does it still count?

idc

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ java and python and lua

@Upgoat If it's not supposed to wobble, yes

Define "comfortably use"
I've seen people put about 20 on their resume and I go "you're kidding, right?"

@MarsUltor okay

5:27 AM
It's up to you. Would you say you can comfortably use it?

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ what is the bug?

Not to say they can't read the language, but if you asked them for a simple program they'd probably need to consult the docs to remember how to take input

ohh, it's the PHP
damn php...

@Upgoat I meant "No, it's not borked"

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Presently? Or once in my life?

5:27 AM
There are 3 that I feel I know really, really well.

@AlexA. Really, really well?

I wanted to say "know inside and out" but that sounds pretentious

Julia, ... and ...?

R, SAS

Does that mean memorized most of the core functions?

5:29 AM
I'd say python, C, C++ and C#

@MarsUltor I guess. I can reason my way through things without having to consult documentation.

Although a little iffy on C#

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ D:
@AlexA. ???

You're a real American hero if you can effectively use memcpy

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ C# is just C++ with the +'s mashed together

5:30 AM
I want to say bash, but I don't think I can honestly say that.

reason?

@HelkaHomba No, it's D♭

IDK what counts as C# standard libraries

@MarsUltor Is that a confusing choice of words?

JS has no standard library, I don't know most of the python standard library
@AlexA. What do you mean by reason?

5:31 AM
I've written one program in C#. Granted, it was a fairly substansial program. (about 2K lines)
Or maybe it was 3

For me it's C#, then JS then Python

@MarsUltor Logically work though constructing a program

right

I guess I mean that even if I can't remember something offhand I know enough other things to work around that hurdle
Maybe that's what I meant by "reason my way through"

@AlexA. wait wat isn't that bad

5:33 AM
I put down 3, but I feel like I really should have just put 1. In the sense that I'd do significantly worse if I used anything but Python in a programming competition (Code Jam round 2 tonight btw)

@MarsUltor Uh, no?

What do you mean by work around?
Or what's an example hurdle/workaround?

For example, if I couldn't remember how to compute the Kaplan-Meier estimator using proc lifetest in SAS, I could do it manually in a data step.

Why does googling 'twill give twill while googling t'will give 'twill? >.>

'twill b'fixed

5:36 AM
H'lka H'mba
'elka 'omba
> elka

@AlexA. That looks censored .-.

> elk

'elk'omba

@AlexA. Alex A

haha, I installed PHP and it said: Is this ok [y/d/N]:

5:37 AM

it's like they know people will not be okay with installing PHP

@Upgoat You got in the way >:|

of Alex Eggsalad

@HelkaHomba ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

5:38 AM
That there is Elka Homba blazin' up a doobie

@AlexA. can you eleven my message to trash so Helka's messages isn't interrupted by my PHP remark

You know what they say, 四百二十燃やせ。
@Upgoat nope

@AlexA. [appropriate face]

:/ okay

Four hundred twenty. Blaze it.

5:39 AM
Hmm tbh I don't think not knowing the standard libraries of a language means you don't know that language. I'm sure we all look up the APIs all the time, right?

Yeah. For example, if I need to plot anything in R, I need to have the docs handy. The plot options are so obscure.

Sp cannot be derailed :I

But if you don't need to know the standard libraries, then you just need to know the syntax

:( strawpoll caps at 30 options

We won't stand for this!
Make Strawpoll.me great again!

5:43 AM
@AlexA. If that's your campaign slogan, I'd totally vote for you.

@Sp3000 What was the poll?

My campaign slogan would be, "Don't vote for me! Are you crazy? I have no idea what the hell I'm doing!"

It's the truth
People love the truth

@HelkaHomba pi

5:45 AM
@HelkaHomba "Which of these Python standard library modules have you ever personally used at least one function from?" followed by a list of > 100 modules

yeeps

@AlexA. Actually, I have a confession.
I didn't vote for you in the last election.

;-;

I would have if I had 4 votes.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ No hard feelings. There were a lot of great candidates.

5:47 AM
Sad panda turned into a happy panda.

@Sp3000 pickle is fun

7 hours without a post..

:P fun and scary when used incorrectly

@HelkaHomba This must be you

turtle is funner
wth, tabnanny
Mini-challenge: Make a coherent English sentence using nothing but Python Standard Module title names.

5:53 AM
__future__ pickle

Popularity contest, most stars wins.

re pickle dis turtle

hotshot marshal curses math, "fractions dumbdbm".

Just found in code:

I like the tooMany function :D

"ic pipes!" json curses

6:07 AM
@Dennis Alright, I should have V working with arbitrary arguments now. Just do python main.py -f input.txt --safe -- arg1 arg2 arg3 ... The -- signifies that there are no more options and everything following is an argument.

re re re re re re pickle

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Pulled and updated wrapper.

@Dennis Hmm, something weird is happening here. What's the full command you're invoking it with?
I'm guessing part of it is 'code'?

I am being told to do this: CREATE USER wordpressuser@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'password'; in my SQL database. Won't this store my uber-sercret password in plaintext?

6:14 AM
@MarsUltor can you elaborate?

It'll email me your SSN
I need it for reasons

@AlexA. i thought mods already have access to my address and SSN

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ Forgot to shift. Please try again.

@AlexA. fo giv secrit avocad juic recipe an 5,000,000,000 nigerin doler 2 me?

Oh right
@Upgoat ...??

6:15 AM
@Dennis Ah, beautiful. Thanks!

@AlexA. :|

oh wait yes it does
use IDENTIFIED WITH <authenticator> BY 'password'

@MarsUltor so should I put my uber-secret password there or just a dumb password
@MarsUltor what is authenticator?

I should be asleep rn but my tired self wonders what SSN is

6:17 AM
Social security number

So you can put your über-secret password there

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ secrit salad number

It uses an authentication plugin by default
halp do i use sails for a website that's mainly websockets

so do I just do IDENTIFIED BY 'xXUpsidedown420goatsXx';

6:19 AM
Yeah

@MarsUltor make sure you have your boat?
@MarsUltor ok, i hope you're not lying to me to steal my über-secret password

@Upgoat No i don't need unit testing thanks

I'm still laughing at "secret salad number"

wait if your avatar is a downgoat and your name is upvoat then doesnt mean you gdt no vodka

0/10 sails uses lift not hoist

6:21 AM

*upgoat. kindle chat is slow and evkl

IDK what to do, and I did it so badly I can't even test it

oh god callback hell

6:36 AM
@RenderSettings yep

i'm...not sure what this is. something to do with webtorrent

should probably extract everything out first
also rename everything

What's your guy's favorite country flag? (purely aesthetically)
I like Brazil's

libya

I think Nepal's is pretty cool.

6:47 AM
What's wrong with our site... 8 hours without a post

The only non-rectangular one.
@LeakyNun Chat mini challenge?

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ can't think of any

chat mini-challenge: come up with a real challenge to post

How about this: Given 2 strings and a number, output the first n stringbonacci strings, e.g. concatenating the strings instead of adding numbers.

> stringbonacci
the first two are the strings, right?
Also, can the strings be given as an array?

6:50 AM
Yeah
Sure
It could be 3 shorter if extra output was ok

@HelkaHomba Republic of Cascadia

pretty damn cool looking

I'm not familiar with that one
Which country is that for?

Iran

It's nice

6:54 AM
impossible to draw in primary school though
if that's a drawback

@AlexA. ew, no

@HelkaHomba Haha was yolk

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ

I think the tree silhouette they used is kind of ugly

Trees make weird, hard to render mascots. Look at lenanon or stanford

6:56 AM

^ Probably my actual favorite

^^ Kazakhstan?

Kazakhstan
yes

@LeakyNun Dammit, beat me by 1. Is that pyth?

6:57 AM
@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ yes

Oh wait, that does the n'th one, not the first N.

JS, too long: f=s=>n=>{o=1;while(++o<n)s.push(s[o-2]+s[o-1]);return s.join('\n')}

@DrGreenEggsandHamDJ hM.u,eNsNtEQ

That makes me really happy that my own language can tie pyth. =D
Although Jelly will probably kick my ass.

7:23 AM
Can kafeste durmaz uçar
Dünya bir han konan göçer
Ay dolanır yıllar geçer
Dostlar beni hatırlasın

^ why are you speaking turkish all of a sudden

Why wouldn't I?
It's part of a famous Turkish poem
C'est vrai, non ? mdr

ಠ_ಠ

7:39 AM
@MarsUltor instead of braces and return, try using eval

@MarsUltor Remember a golden rule: never use while, always use for
Also, you can replace ++o by o and increment o in the loop
9 hours without a post...

people inform me of any feedbacks/ambiguous sentences about this this challenge before posting it
