The Verve just came on for me

Maybe I'll skip down to that.

weird, I just noticed I have 2600something messages in three of my rooms. interesting

An emasculated giraffe singing should cheer you up

@Mego Sorry, had to stop at ADIDAS.
I know how you probably feel about that.

Do what?

Drunkbits has arrived

@Quill You haven't been here, so let me fill you in: I'm drunk.

on what specifically. that's the important part

Anonymous
ADIDAS hasn't been in the playlist yet... Paradise City is next lol

8:03 AM
What....

@El'endiaStarman something something OVER 9000

@Quill Ummm, six guiness regulars, and three extra stouts (which are the same damn thing by the taste of it).

@Quill oh my

8:04 AM
Ok, Radiohead - Creep is on now. Life is good.

sounds like a good time

Could be worse, yes.

I always liked Everything In Its Right Place and How to disappear completely

Blame Mego if the playlist is bad. He started me off with Dragula.
(not that I'm complaining)

Anonymous
Dragula is a good start to any playlist

8:07 AM
Fair point. It's just the right mix of angry and energetic.
sigh cracking #10
Observation: Oasis seems like it doesn't belong on this playlist, but oddly enough, it works.

@Quill Look here. I like Oasis, but I've never heard this. Stop finding new music for me to have to add to my collection.

;)

Seriously. I don't want to look back in anger >_>

@Quill Wow. Usually when someone shares music, I find it too loud. But I actually like this song

8:18 AM
It's like a mellow blend of rock, I like it

@Justin I have a feeling you wouldn't like my current playlist then ;)

Probably the loudest song I really enjoy listening to is Molecules by Atlas Genius.

Just gonna skip down to the Metallica and pretend the Nickelback didn't happen

I like Sugar but it's a bit misogynistic

@Justin I wouldn't call it loud by any means, but it sounds decent so far.

That isn't loud?

Anonymous
You do realize that there's such a thing as a volume control, right?

How about Show Me What I'm Looking For by Carolina Liar?

Oh, I know what I need right now. The Strokes - Reptilia

I think those are my two loudest songs....

> I said please don't slow me down if I'm going toooo faaaaaast....

@Quill Not bad but I don't really like rap that much

neither do I, it just has a really nice mellow vibe kinda thing going on

Yeah
Probably one of my all time favorite songs:

8:26 AM
yessssss, Empire of the Sun. have 100 internet points

Sounds... funky... so far.
(this is a good thing)

australia has some cool electronic artists

I love Empire of the Sun

Hmm, was better before lyrics :/
An instrumental version would be better imo.

@Egobits I somewhat agree
My roommate from last semester got introduced to Empire of the Sun by me, and he kept saying he wanted to have Walking on a Dream played at his wedding.

8:29 AM
They used to play in one of the places I lived quite a bit. I was too young to go back then ;-;

@Justin Oh, you're one of our resident Pokemoners, right?

?
What's a Pokemoner?

I picked up red and yellow today X)

For some reason I was thinking Quincunx liked Pokemon.

Oh I do
I like pokemon

8:30 AM
<-- drunk

I just haven't heard the term "Pokemoner" before

I was just going to mention that the originals got released recently.

What?

I'm on my way to Cerulean.

They were released a long time ago

8:31 AM
R/B/Y came out on 3DS recently.

are you gonna do the mew glitch
does it even work anymore

@Quill It does, and of course I am :P

thank christ

Mew is half the reason I got Yellow this time around.

it works on red and blue

8:32 AM
I have a complete dex in OR minus a few event pokes.

Leafgreen was my first Pokemon game, but I got exposed to it on airplane flights before then. Pokemon Yellow was cool, but I never got past the forest since there was no saving and I was like 5.
Ruby was my second Pokemon game

@Quill Yea, I meant that as in "any of them".
@Justin No saving?

what about missingno

@Quill I never bothered with that dude.

@Egobits textbook symptom of a fake cartridge

8:34 AM
@Egobits Not on the airplane's console.

Oh right, got it.

It's not a cartridge; Singapore Airlines managed to get a couple pokemon games
Emerald is my favorite Pokemon game because of the Battle Frontier. The Battle Factory is insanely fun compared to other aspects of the game.

I used the mew glitch to catch all 151 in Red before without transferring

Yea, starting a Pokemon game on a flight seems like a terrible idea :D

that took me so long

8:35 AM
@Quill The shiny charm in OR took me forever, but it was worth it. I finally got me a shiny Umbreon...

I did that random trading thing for a few hours straight and got a lvl100 shiny lugia once

But do you have Pokerus?

Lugia's a punk :P
@Justin I've got so much Pokerus it's ridiculous :D

I think it was a level5 or 6 magikarp I traded it for ;p

My ... was it Emerald or Ruby? Anyway, one of my pokemon naturally contracted Pokerus and my brother was so amazed

8:36 AM
@Egobits maybe you should go see a doctor about that

I've had two naturally contract it and one from trading.

I've got Pokerus on my Leafgreen game to keep it immortalized

@Quill The doctor told me to wait three days and it would go away D:

My Leafgreen game is one of the funniest things. My dad played until catching a pokemon to ensure there was no problems with the game, so when I went to play it the first time, I was so excited upon starting the game that I was mashing A. Naturally, it started from where he last saved, and I had no idea that I missed the very start of the game. So my character is named Agk and I had a Pidgey named Pig.
I got a Squirtle, which, ironically, is the starter I would have chosen if I had had the choice

#squirtle4life

8:40 AM
I renamed it so now my Blastoise is named Splash
I don't like Magikarp, however.

>squirtle

I was recently reminded (rather harshly) that the first gym in Yellow sucks unless you get some fighting moves for nidoran or mankey.

My goodness. My knowledge of the game was so terrible.
Oof

Your starter pika is useless against Brock :(

Yeah without squirtle

8:41 AM
lol yeah, rock is super effective to electric

@Quill Is it? If it is, that's one of the matchups I always forget

It's not even just that, but every damn move you have is "not effective" except fighting.

Like using shedinja

I finally battered my way through with an overpowered pidgey :D

I taught Blizzard to my Cubone (now Marowak).... I mean, that was one of the worst ideas possible. Only 2 pokemon on my team had ice type moves: Hitmonchan (which I named "Punchy") and that Marowak (Bony). I mean what was I even thinking with these names?

8:44 AM
lol
at least you're better than the crude names you get in the random trading

Random trading? What's that?

I got a DongBear once.

because who doesn't love ASCII genitals
@Justin it's a feature in ORAS

XY too

Wonder Trade, it's called

8:45 AM
OmegaRuby AlphaSapphire. Meh. I'm a Gen III and below kid
I don't like the perspective tilt they added to the overworld
I do like the battle animations, though

I'm not a fan of the megas, but other than that I like gen VI.

Megas?
I have an obsession with macro functions
That's all C macros

@Justin Yea... super transforms for a poke that last through the end of the battle (using your item slot for the mega-enabler).

Oh. That's strange

It really is.

8:47 AM

Although I've got to say that Mega Gengar is a beast >_>

I mean, they just had to follow the trend of sagging pants on teenagers

Scrafty's not good for much anyway ;)

I feel like the recent pokemon are less creative. Vanillish?!

I'm torn on that one. It's not like Voltorb was a monument of creativity or anything.

8:49 AM
I guess you're right. But the old pokemon have sentimental value

Definitely that :)
It's getting harder to care for each one when there's 700+.

And voltorbs and electrodes are attached to painful memories of the Power Plant and losing all my pokemon to explosions.

I'm looking forward to filling out my 151-dex in Yellow. It should be much easier than filling out the OR dex.

Nice

are you going to trade or use the mew glitch to catch them all
on a related note, that's where I learned my basic integer structures from :D

8:52 AM
If they announce a Mew event I won't glitch it, but I'm not holding my breath for that :(

I don't know how that's going to work for Virtual Console, but they did a Mew event for ORAS/XY

@Quill what??
When was this?

recently, ended like last week

Are you kidding me?

8:54 AM
My sister got Sapphire from EBay. So when it came time to catch Rayquaza, the ball used was a repeat ball.

Oh well. At least I can pick up a Genesect later.

I neeeeeeeeeeeeed a Darkrai

I've got a Darkrai in OR I think.

I have a few in Diamond and Pearl from events
I could probably trade them forward

You should be able to.

8:55 AM
This is part of the reason why I like Pokemon Emerald: it has a duplication glitch.

@Justin so does RBY

There was a terrible browser glitch for 3DS last year sometime.
Free custom pokes via barcode.

there was an iphone app out a few years ago that you could make your own pokemon and trade it in

@Quill I thought about doing that for android. I got halfway into the comm protocol and gave up :/
Nintendo's fake wifi is no joke.

@Quill I've visited the Maid Cafe from time to time. Not bad, but it's no Nineteenth Byte :P

Magic ponies for the most part.

@Optimizer sign up to a new SE site, change your name there

@Quill Sure. Data is definitely more useful.
@Quill You don't need to sign up for a new one if you already have 50+ accounts. Just only change the user name per site.

9:12 AM
^ that @Optimizer

Not that I know anything about that.

Zip It More?

Zip It More really is the perfect complement to Optimizer.

as in?

To optimize the space used for something, you zip (compress) it more.

9:14 AM
well, at one point, further zipping increases the size due to zipping overhead

Well sure, but no need for the specifics in a pun anagram.
I doubt any other anagram would fit as well, at any rate.

I might homebrew my spare 3ds, I hear homebrew for 3ds has a gba emulator

@Quill I've got a gba emulator on mine. And snes, nes, genesis...

I really got into modifying the old gb and gba pokemon games a while ago
you can modify pretty much everything

Homebrew for the 3DS is beautiful, too, because it's all on the card. No mods to the system necessary.

9:17 AM
I did most things besides modifying sprite appearances. Hexcode was a seemingly difficult thing to understand at 11

I'd have to agree. At 11 I was mostly modifying ELIZA bots and random BASIC games.
Though if my nine-year-old is any indication, kids are different these days :D

I'm not sure if this is a new thing, but a lot of kids (and maybe even adults) aren't interested in looking under the hood
of anything

Oh, not mine. He loves peeking into how things work.
He's far too much like me for his own good, I think.

I wonder if I should make a list of things I've taken apart

eventually you've looked at everything that's in there, and then you want to make your own

9:22 AM
Naturally, you have to put it back together too

I remember getting in some serious trouble for taking apart our VCR a looooong time ago.
The tape heads are really cool, though >_>

Haha
I've always loved the whirring of a VCR

Ours didn't whir very much once I was done with it.
Hence the trouble part.
I doubt my dad would have been upset if it still worked.
I can only imagine what the 14-year-olds will think of this conversation if they happen across it in the transcript. "What's this VCR thing?"

Interesting piece of information, the original gameboy uses the same processor as the TI-84

Huh. Did not know that. Makes sense, I guess.
Then again, it also ate through batteries like nothing else.
Well, except the Game Gear. That thing was the worst on batteries I've ever seen. Stupid color display.
Should the test case 280 30 be 9:05 or 9:5? — A and N 49 mins ago
@AandN This test case isn't valid, since the minutes aren't a multiple of 60.

10:34 AM
@Egobits Oh, I didn't see that. Thanks.

@Egobits A VCR is a device for reading magnetic tapes and converting the information stored on them into video and audio, with optional closed captions. Good ones also do it the other way around!
While I'm at it: A computer is like a smart-phone, just bigger and better.
And a command-line is a way of talking to a computer with text, not pictures.
A floppy disk is a roll of magnetic tape that stores information. It's a bit like a CD, just bendy, made of layers and lasts longer.
A CD is a round piece of plastic with a small metal layer that stores information. They are very shiny.
A cathode ray tube TV makes pictures by... erm... firing a laser gun at a piece of glass. (Sort-of.)
ELIZA is this
BASIC is great.
Everything is awesome.
A GameBoy is like a smartphone, but it's just for games.
And if you don't know this stuff already, why are you even reading this transcript?
Ok, I quit. I'm not defining any more words for the next minute. Maybe even longer, if I feel like it.
So there.

11:17 AM
Something I've been thinking about lately and I just don't get it: why does everyone think that using the C preprocessor is bad practice? Yes, you can use it for horrors, but you can use it to generate repetitive code; is that considered bad? If I was defining a class which overloads the arithmetic operators in all the same ways, I'd make a macro to assist in the definition. More recently, I created a bunch of macro functions for the purpose of defining an FSM with a transition table.
I must be missing something here
Oh the more recent one, I didn't have access to C++, just C
Important to note that; C++ has more powerful tools

@mınxomaτ exactly
Please don't spec-golf. The challenge should be about writing code to solve a problem, not about trying to decrypt the spec by finding relationships between datasets. Please post challnge suggestions in the sandbox before asking on main. — tac 1 min ago

@tac exactly?

tac
@mınxomaτ that's exactly what the question is about... unless you weren't referring to that and wanted an answer?

I wasn't referring to anything :D. I need this for my purposes.
I'm looking for a safe way to do this. That was a genuine question.

2:38 PM
Ooh. In that case, do something like curl yoursite.com/page.html | sed <options>, but you'd want to look for a sed regex tutorial / walkthrough or sed regex debugger
on the other hand, just do it in Perl or Python

Perl or Python might no exist on the system. I'll try with curl

tac
@mınxomaτ curl will write the full page's HTML to stdout, and sed is by far and away the regex language of choice for the shell.

Yeah, I know what curl is, I just completely forgot that it exists for a moment :D

I'm seriously surprised that the Unix dictionary has bogey.
Wait, it has like 6 different meanings with 3 different pronunciations.

@Dennis aw, thanks for the explanation. I was really wondering how that worked...

:D

@Dennis you're lucky that it works correctly for repeated integers. I think that behaviour is actually inconsistent.

tac
@mınxomaτ egrep can also do PCRE-ish stuff
@MartinBüttner harsh! :o

@MartinBüttner Yeah, I was pretty surprised too.

@tac I basically need to extract the first match of (v[0-9]+\.[0-9]+\.[0-9]+-[a-z]+\/Turbo-latest.zip) from github.com/turbo/Source/releases. I'm currently experimenting with ordinary grep in perl mode.
grep -Po did the job.

3:14 PM
Challenge idea: Expand a recursive acronym as fast as you can.
For example, with the input "LOL" -> "LOL out LOL"
A possible output would be ` out <<<<< out >>>> out ` etc.
Cut after x amount of time
Score is number of complete levels/characters/whatever

That sounds like run time is completely dominated by printing the output.

tac
@LegionMammal978 or, detect a recursive acronym and stop expanding after a depth

@tac Nah, too many built-ins for that already

tac
@LegionMammal978 ಠ_ಠ

@Dennis That's why your code should try to find the most efficient output method
Another (more interesting) idea:
Explain acronyms in the input
For example {"DoS"->"dEnIaL oF SeRvIcE"} and "Oh no! A DoS attack!" should return "Oh no! A DoS (Denial Of Service) attack!"

3:21 PM
OK, but it's just a printing challenge.

You also have to account for capitalization

Is there a good unix util that can unzip from stdin? unzip itself has a bug (since '09...) that prevents unzipping more than the first file from an archive.

Or {"HTTP"->"hypertext transfer protocol","HTTPS"->"HTTP over TLS","TLS"->"transport layer security"} and "My site uses HTTPS!" should return "My site uses HTTPS (HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) over tlS (Transport Layer Security))!" (the chosen capital letters should have the lowest mean distance to the beginnings of words)

3:46 PM
