Q: Editing an answer (or question) can make it get more upvotes. Shouldn't the editor also get credit for these later upvotes?

cipricusEditing can substantially change an answer or question. These changes, if accepted, may increase the value of the answer/question and the number the up-votes it gets. These should be reflected in the score of the editor making these changes, not only of the initial creator.

Q: How do i install PHP5.2 on Server 12.04

AchuHow do i install PHP5.2 on Ubuntu 12.04 server? Do you know any PPA for that? Thanks,

any idea?
You didn't find one yet?
@SirCharlo Nop :)
16:40
i think i answered a question about this a while back, hold on
hmm
guess im going crazy
well, try this
@jokerdino I think, ubiquity uses partman which is included in the package itself
looks well thought out and useful
@SirCharlo I have been tried using phpfarm But got so many trouble on the server
phpfarm?
hmm that link gives me some trouble that i don't remembered now coz of trying so many ways. Anyway i will give it a try again :)
16:44
Hello @AmithKK
@SirCharlo Yeah phpfarm. it gives you the alblity to run different php version on one Apache server
oh.. sounds interesting
but try compiling from source and following the guide i linked to
the guy knows his chops
Ok :) i'm preparing myself to give it a try again :)
@SirCharlo Thanks for your help :)
pleasure
@jokerdino @achu if you appreciated the assistance, please vote up! :D
(just kidding - you have to read the transcript to understand)
@SirCharlo no pro. ;)
16:49
--I'm back!
php5.2 is available in hardy repository. what about adding that repository and use it for a while? @Achu
precise or hardy
but i need for precise do you think that repo works for precise too?
I've decided to see how Kubuntu is doing these days.
16:52
I am not sure, but you can try. I think, php is more like a standalone software, so it should work
@njallam yeesh.. tell me your verdict. i gave up on it about four releases ago, but im curious
@SirCharlo I last used it about the same time ago, so I'm quite keen to see how it has changed.
Hopefully Plasma doesn't crash all the time in this release!
I've used Kubuntu recently. I think, it is doing very good
@Anwar ok thanks
Protip: Click the icon on the right of a message to reply to it.
16:55
More fast, more stable and surprisingly less resource hungry
Isn't it designed for netbooks now?
I dont think I will agree..
I am using it on my Notebook.
@Mahesh Used it recently?
yup
My love for unity might've clouded my eyes, but I found kubuntu slower, and not so good.
Well install has finished.
16:59
I've both unity and kde installed, using KDE right now because Unity is slow for me here
i wonder how @MsPeachy is doing right now
It lists as Ubuntu in Grub which is quite strange
@njallam I agree with you. it should be changed
Well plasma has stabled up a lot
@njallam the core is Ubuntu. not so strange.
17:02
one fatality reported
@Mahesh But it should be changed
Though change would be better perhaps..
@Mahesh yes
@njallam you can change it by editing the file lsb_release in /etc, I think
Oh
It'a vm
17:03
Though its a bad idea
i DON'T MINE THAT MUCH
caps lock
Grub entries are edited by editing grub.cfg
lsb_release edits specifically what it says. The release identifier.
@njallam lol
Edited grub.cfg get lost every time you do sudo update-grub
Go edit /etc/default/grub then
17:06
I'm liking Kubuntu
hmm.. better one @Mahesh
The new settings menu drives me insane though
in dolphin?

Shouldn't it be moved?
Oh wait
that is off-topic
@njallam moved to where? I can move the icon in start menu
@Anwar I was talking about the question
dw
Anyway my verdict:
Ubuntu > Kubuntu
Thus, my opinion, though old, is still valid.
@njallam Thanks for the input!
It does too much automatically
It changes pages without me clicking
It relies on mouse hovers too much
It.. Well I needed another thing stating with It
17:11
Pa dum tish
@Anwar of what?
I asked if it is a dupe. I haven't said it is so.

Q: Which is better a 32 bit 12.04 with PAE kernel or a 64 bit 12.04?

AnkitI want to format my system; I have both 64 bit edition of 12.04 and 32bit edition of 12.04. I want to know which version would be better performance wise if install 32 bit with PAE kernel or 64 bit. I have 6G Ram and i3 processer(2nd gen).

@ObsessiveFOSS o/
Am I too nice/liberal with bounties?
that one is a beast that i started working on but never finished. basically you have to manually include all the maven dependencies (which sort of defeats the purpose of maven). if you can get to "offline install" then you can get it working, but some maven packages are forbidden on LP
i'm wondering one thing
17:37
@LnxSlck go for it
is it ok do downvote a question, if the user didn't even search AU for an answer?
i wouldn't. it has been addressed on meta a couple times.
and what were the findings?
not to downvote?
Why downvote a duplicate when we can just close it as a duplicate? — Jorge Castro Aug 10 at 17:23
17:42
@aking1012, i just made the same comment as you :D
on the 32 bit pae kernel
i'm not sure if i have the rep necessary to close as duplicate
it's fine. mine was a voting auto-comment. either way, a comment was posted asking how they were similar then deleted when i responded. either way. it should be closed as one of the two

Shouldn't the results of the community vote be out by now?
One would think so, but I imagine there's some administrative issue
or they could even be sorting out some kind of vote stuffing thing ... I'm trusting it will come out when it comes out.
17:49
@GeorgeEdison What vote?
ubuntu app showdown community vote.
we've had everything from "shouldn't it be done yet" to complaining and questions on AU
It ended Wednesday.
i hate doing nothing

@msPeachy ping me when you are back

@ObsessiveFOSS they had an earthquake this morning - 7.6

sounds good
> Small waves of about 16 cm (6 inches) had hit a southern Philippine island

Whew
At least @msPeachy - you are okay I believe :)
as long as she wasn't laying face down asleep on the beach, i'm pretty sure the six inch wave didn't get her ;)

Q: Creating a PPA for OpenERP

Don KirkbyI'm investigating whether it's worth the effort of setting up a recipe in Launchpad to create a PPA for OpenERP that includes the official source code along with our custom modules. sweet, the automation for screencap to DVD actually works \o/...and it doesn't matter how long it is (most solutions bork over 45 minutes or so at least on my laptop). 2 + hours from screen to dvd with one command :)
yo
wassup!
@NlightNFotis my blood pressure...i got a script working to generate what i wanted, but now my DVD burner is failing :( other than that...great day
is it possible to run a command to export a directory and its subdirectory and contents from ubuntu server onto the hard drive?
im sshed into ubuntu server from my osx and I am trying to export a directory and its contents
scp has a recursive switch
20:13
@aking1012 you suggesting something like this? scp -r /Users/USER_02/Downloads/ [email protected]:/home/guarddoggps
yes, something like that
it would probably look more like:
`scp -r /Users/USER_O2/Downloads [email protected]:/home/someuser/Downloads/remote`
if I were doing it though
that and i don't know how accurate the source-dir is...never touched a Mac(in recent history).
well isnt the second parameter the ubuntu structure?
home/guarddoggps is the directory i want to copy to /Users/USER_02/Downloads/ (which is downloads folder on mac)
src then dst...i think you have it backwards. i thought you were trying to push to the server, not pull from it
20:20
im trying to pull from it
so flip the order...
ok
hmmm what about the ip part?
if i am on ubuntu server and i am exporting to local hard drive, why do i have to include the ip of ubuntu server?
i've always done it in the other direction. you're running it locally and trying to pull? i've always pushed. if you're logged in to ssh on the server it should know some your mac hostname magic. i forget where to check that
so i shoudl exclude the ip?
like this: scp -r /home/guarddogsystem/public_html/guarddoggps /Users/USER_02/Downloads/
here's the exact question you're looking for on U/L
1
Q: How to pull a file from a server using scp?

p2pnodeI am on machine A and want to pull a file from machine B. A$ scp <myuserid>@hostB:<path of file in B> . it says that: scp: <path of file in B>: No such file or directory But on machine B, this file exists in this path. What is going wrong?

that's from host, not already ssh connected, pulling via scp from server "B"
if you're sshed in it would look something like:
`scp -r /home/guarddogsystem/public_html/guarddoggps localuseronyourlaptop@hostnameofyourlaptop:/Users/USER_02/Downloads/`
but the question on UL more than answers your Q
20:34
it seems to be working, although this is taking extrodinary time
if it wasn't working it would bail out. you could use something like -c othercipher to speed up the process if you wanted
o/ @RolandTaylor
i mean that i have large files
image files
@aking1012 |o
@JohnMerlino yes, it's def going to take a while
just background it and don't disconnect your lappie from the interweb and move along with your day
@RolandTaylor no word from peachy on surviving the 6 inch phillipine apolcalypse yet?
@aking1012 nope, she's probably sleeping though
I'll email here later

fair point...i just like knowing that people i talk to sometimes are still vertical
interesting question if anyone has a solution, i'ld be interested in hearing it:
