@aking1012 maybe delete the reasons after.. say a month or two.. else send a mail to the user.. let him deal with the reason? to delete or not to delete
would complicate things
@aking1012, even so it would take less space than a regular answer no?
@ShyamK that's not how SE works. like flag reasons are kept forever too
and downvotes are anonymous, its supposed to be a self management system, so to speak
@LnxSlck not necessarily. if you voted it as "the part about XYZ is factually incorrect", someone else voted it as "horrifying formatting and lack of grammar", and a third person voted it as "copy and paste from an old forum with no reference" that's three text blobs for one answer. also what @JourneymanGeek said
10:03
@aking1012 hmmm.. so downvote reasons would also be required to exist forever... so if ya'll keep the downvote reasons its gonna take up loads of space.. especially if its compulsory...
And if you wanted to say a close vote reason, you can always comment
@JourneymanGeek but what if its a hate down vote? they might comment (not likely) or go on a down voting spree
Yeah, you are on my list now Shyam. Watch out.
downvoting sprees would get caught by the system
same way serial upvoting does
10:09
@jokerdino hehe..
and someone else upvoting the question back up would undo most of the rep loss
BTW, whoever did a serial upvote on my posts two days earlier, I hate you.
lol
same happened to me
worst part is, its been a slow week for me
well it wasn't me cos I ain't got enuf repu yet :D
@jokerdino someone i know of has a userscript that does that. not me but i solved a problem in chat once and had a massive rep-spike followed by a rep regression
10:10
I've actually lost more rep this week than I gained
@aking1012 silly
ok, so a big chunk of it was the SU bounty hunt
@jokerdino it's like trying to gift rep(bounty for a problem solved in chat) without giving away rep. i understand it, but it's impossible to say that's okay and still catch the bad ones
@aking1012 i dont know how crazy it was for you but mine was like, all the questions were voted up.
@jokerdino: eh, same thing happened to me, exactly ;p
10:13
Like all 21 of them.
@JourneymanGeek shrug
oh, mine wasn't that crazy. let me see if i can find it. i think it was a +150 then an 80 point regression
sat march 17 was mine
@jokerdino you said something about this in the chat right? complained on meta also I believe? about a wiki thing getting downvoted and something
10:18
@ShyamK yeah it wasn't a bug after all. i overlooked something
aah.. okay..
@foss is on early...checking AU over tea and biscuits i guess
o/ ... must turn that webcam off ;) - yes cuppa in hand.
... plus sticky doughnut.
How much i love fixing broken things - askubuntu.com/posts/182539/revisions

Hello all
@hakermania what's with the workspace bounty ... is it a dupe as per the comments in the Q?
@fossfreedom there's no clear answer given
And I need it
@hakermania ... there isnt a clear answer in this one? askubuntu.com/questions/75998/…
@fossfreedom desktop becomes unusable without its icons
i don't have any icons on my desktop (okay i have a couple folders, but i don't need them there)
10:28
@hakermania clean desktop policy - gnome devs dont like icons on their desktop. There is unlikely to be another answer to have both different wallpaper and icons together.
@fossfreedom From when do the devs do what they like and not what they would expect the users to like?
I like macaroni.
@hakermania devs do what they want to do - just look what they did to nautilus 3.6!
i like nautilus 3.6 o.O
@fossfreedom Ok, let's abandon gnome
10:30
i am willing to navigate to a full gnome distro
@jokerdino gnomebuntu is just your cuppa then!
@fossfreedom Yeah!!
I'll add a PPA for nautilus 3.6
GDM is so nice.
... arent they going to include nautilus 3.6 in the repo then as an optional install?
That's what they said. But they don't fully follow on what they said :P
if it is in the repo, my life would be easier.
Gnome is my cuppa tea as you say. :)
Anyway, gnome devs are going mad
10:33
going?
unity uses gnome technology. so, i dont want it dead
... anyway - still think that workspace bounty is a dupe - but let it ride - when the period is finished I'll dupe the two Qs together to the master.
QT FTW ;p
@JourneymanGeek QT is lost in the sea.
nokia threw qt out :P
10:34
gnome is moving ahead on some things
unity not
@jokerdino: its not just about nokia
also, its properly cross platform
right. KDE uses QT.
and nokia dosen't own it any more
/me rather hopes the new symbian phone company survives as well
@jokerdino Qt isn't dead. Community will support it, if everything else goes wrong
i really think python gui wrappers based on opengles are where it's going to go eventually. kivy being a notable one
10:36
@hakermania i didn't say it's dead.
it's in turbulence.
its pining for the fjords? ;p
@jokerdino you said it's lost in the sea without water or food.
@hakermania it can fish :P
i am probably more concerned about gnome than kde or qt
ugh
/me can't find a nice clean steam whistle sound clip anywhere
gui toolkits in the thunderdome!!! two kits enter, one kit leaves jk
10:38
lol
makes it a lot slower to seek out original questions to dupe to...
which question?
@aking1012 just use google - its faster and gives better results.
@fossfreedom true. i can't sort by votes from google though...one of my tricks
@jokerdino i found it
@aking1012 good sir

Q: Mediaserver for Ubuntu 12.04

Nicolas Noxas the title says I´m searching for a mediaserver for Ubuntu 12.04. I have already tried Mediatomb, Serviio, Miro (media management), Songbird (media management). But the thing is, that I need a mediaserver which is able to share the media via DLNA and which is performant, so optional with an ext...

... he's is looking for servers - not a PVR solution. why the dupe?
good. considering the amount of meta questions we get, i am now not looknig forward to maxing out my close votes.
xmbc does exactly what he wants. almost all "PVR" solutions are also media servers
is scared of Eliah and his meta posts.
dont see any of his "I have tried" solutions in that dupe Q & A .
10:50
goes off for dinner now.
@fossfreedom Miro is there
ampache is another server that comes to mind.
fair. does ampache do video too or just audio?
does whatever you want I think - have tested it on just music though - think it just streams whatever you ask it - you can set it up as well to transcode to other stream types.
The Community Vote is closed 2 days now. Nobody has told us (the developers) a word. The counting was done by the voting site, so there's nothing else to do rather than to announce us the results. Isn't this weird?
10:56
@fossfreedom neat. was just asking...haven't used it
@hakermania don't get your knickers in a twist. they might need to verify the who on winners before announcement. it would suck to announce that someone won and then not be able to give them the prize wouldn't it?
Is it true that, If I let windows hibenate and access a drive from Ubuntu to write files on it, the file will be lost? source
@aking1012 they have already communicated with the developers, at least once, so I don't think that this is a point
@Anwar ... last time I tried that - you couldnt write to a windows filesystem that was in hibernation state.
hmm.. this means those drive also which are not system drive i.e C: ?
@hakermania sending an email and verifying addresses/contact information/original work for the winners are two different sets of events
11:00
@aking1012 you have no point. Verifying 3 addresses shouldn't take more than .... 10 mins?
@Anwar it was a while back though - I seem to remember that you couldnt mount a windows FS that was in hibernation state. Might be worth testing this again to see if this is still the same.
@hakermania you're just complaining. the point is, a winner would need to have it verified that the code was original or mostly original, make sure they aren't DQ-ed for some reason from the rules, etc. stop complaining.
Thanks @fossfreedom yes, I'll do the test. I hope it to be not true now ;P
@aking1012 who talks about original coding.... reederapp.com/mac/screens They don't care about this...
The link I provided to you is the winner app... Err... it's the MAC clone of it. With the difference that the mac version came first :P
cloning ui and using identical code are different. you're very close to making it to my ignore list.
11:07
@aking1012 UI is a part of coding. And, you know something? There was the 'Innovation' review criterion. I don't think that your arguments are good enough.
and ignored
11:21
o.O
Copying chunks of code is not the same as copying the design / UI.
@jokerdino UI is part of the code.
But it doesn't mean you copied the code.
By your argument, Samsung copied Apple's code because they look similar
@jokerdino I know, but what about the innovation !???
@hakermania Assume the judges didn't know about other apps.
@jokerdino We aren't talking about different things. We are talking about the same things with different (?) code
11:24
Assume the rest of the criteria was pretty high for lighread.
@jokerdino but that's not the point. The innovation was inside of the review criteria.
@hakermania I dont know how you concluded that just because they have the same UI means it is the same code. i can make it look similar with using a totally different code, etc
@jokerdino It lacks innovation & it doesn't scratch an itch and (at the time it was submitted) it lacked platform integration
Not that I disagree but I think we are arguing without any recourse.
Even if you win this argument, you won't get anything.
So, leave it.
so i wonder how many ubu specific patches actually go in to the debian installer project...might be something worth checking in the nearish future.
11:29
@jokerdino I'm not planning to get anything. I just point out that, as my good friend nothingspecial (who didn't participate) said: "The whole thing has been handled incredibly badly"
not many
Gotta go now. Bye !
@hakermania Bye
@hakermania it is worth nothing. Discussing is only going to hurt everyone more.
yeah, i wonder due to the discussion yesterday about dropping alternate altogether and server-x86
copying the package list should be really easy, but the debian-installer part might be a little more complicated. something that should be checked i think. anyway, moving on
@aking1012: minimal would cover what alternate does to a big extent
/me tends to use that to install these days
well, minimal would cover the server role as well
11:37
fair point. does minimal also have the full-disk encryption fanciness that's being worked in to server/alternate?
I can't remember
/me hasn't installed a fresh ubuntu system in a while
iirc that was the point of disasgreement yesterday on irc. there were some options like that where server was the recommended path for people that used to use alternate, but then server x86 was getting dropped
oh ;p
contest?
@JourneymanGeek ??
/me obviously has no idea what's going on :/
11:40
neither do i at this point of time
what contest?
edited to clarify
there was an app development contest
@JourneymanGeek if you're talking about my statement "point of contest" i changed the wording
ohhhh
ugh

Q: Ubuntu minimal install ISO with LUKS support?

LanceBaynesSo if I want to encrypt my whole HDD with e.g.: LUKS (are there any better solutions? - e.g.: in performance?) then I have to download&burn a "ubuntu-11.04-alternate-amd64.iso" CD. That's ok, I understand. The Question: Are there any minimal ISO's (like the Debian netinstall CD) *WITH LUKS ...

11:42
tested and commented... askubuntu.com/questions/182507/…
this is a horrible self answer, since I have no idea
@JourneymanGeek terrible.
/me is having one of those brainfart days
I'm trying to remember a bit of software that was on last term's assignment VM...
BINGO
o/ @JourneymanGeek and @jokerdino
11:47
o/
want a free NAA flaggable answer?
@Anwar it can be considered an answer..
hmm... I agree.. it can be
I have to edit. It does not use code. @Anwar o/
Thanks @Anwar
OK. I don't want to edit an answer, which i said, Not an answer ;)
Thanks to @jokerdino for the tip
really cool !
11:53
@Anwar I flagged it too:)
@Anwar welcome.
What tip again?
oh that tip.
I have edited the answer and then removed the edit with "grab the source and paste it" method
i know what tip you are talking about.
yeah. thanks :)
I have Mitch agreed with me. nice

Hello @njallam
Question: Why is askubuntu.com/questions/182483/… a duplicate? It is a different thing.
> Please say the differences between a X.04 and a X.10 version.
Will LTS appear on .10 may I ask?
So what?
12:10
It IS GENERALLY more stable.
IMHO - its a poor question - probably more "not constructive" than anything.
@jrg \o
jrg
jrg
howdy!
ooohhh, new quantal updates.
I am generally less scared if Eliah voted a question to close on a question I did.
@fossfreedom I only edited because it got tweeted.
12:12
@jrg nothing broke here.
@smartboyhw it isn't. Are you saying 11.04 was more stable than 11.10?
Checking updates in terminal now.
But then surely 12.04.1 is more stable than 11.10
Maybe even 10.04.4 is more stable then 10.10, 11.04 and 11.10
I got 27 new updates on Language Packs and Ubuntu Studio packages
it has nothing to do with .04 or .10.
It has.
Bounty offered: How to disable touchpad while using trackpoint on a Thinkpad? http://askubuntu.com/q/181676?atw=1 #touchpad
Evidence?
12:15
LTS point releases ARE the evidence
Not every .04 are LTS
jrg
jrg
@jokerdino Who said anything is broken?
asking if its "stable" or not is not constructive - based on what - what hardware - what are you doing - what circumstance ...
5
@jrg I was giving you the green signal to update :)
Hello all
jrg
jrg
12:15
@jokerdino Oh. I just upgrade, never dist-upgrade. ;)
@ObsessiveFOSS \o
@jrg I don't either. :D
\o everyone
jrg
jrg
@jokerdino have the wallpapers shown up for you yet?
In other words, if we are arguing about a question, it can be closed as not-constructive.
@jrg i installed ubuntu-wallpapers and i can see it
jrg
jrg
12:17
@jokerdino says its the newest version for me. :\
8.04.x, 10.04.x, 12.04.x, 14.04.x, 16.04.x all LTS. anything else isn't.

12.04.1 isn't necessarily more stable than 11.10. look at all the graphics driver bugs and whatnot. "more stable" could mean lots of things. what doesn't crash with the current fglrx driver for one, latest security patches for another, etc etc. you can't quantitatively say for sure X is "more stable" than Y
4
@SirCharlo o/
@jrg then i guess it should be?
jrg
jrg
@jokerdino this is most uncool.
@aking1012 So it is NOT a duplicate it is just NOT even a question
@jrg lol but i have the 12.10 wallpapers here
@smartboyhw Doesn't matter; Got closed
jrg
jrg
12:19
@jokerdino Yeah, and I'm trying to figure out why I don't have them.
@smartboyhw if you're talking about the one i'm thinking of then yes
@jrg shrug. i don't know.
@jrg maybe a dist upgrade to mess things up? :P
Hello All
jrg
jrg
12:19
@jokerdino ITS A BUGGGGGGGGGGG. SQUASH IT!
@BrunoPereira haven't dist-upgrade'd in weeks.
@jrg i'll check quantal-changes
OK
I just reported my first critical bug today:)
jrg
jrg
oh, there it is. i thought i snagged it in the update last night, but i didn't. derp.
I dislike mirrors.
@jrg you sir.
jrg
jrg
not all the time, just some of the time. Like right now.
12:21
@jrg thought you needed to do it between major freeze points
when is beta coming?
sometime after alpha
@BrunoPereira Next thursday for Beta 1
@SirCharlo wow, really?
rubs eyes sorry, early friday joke
@smartboyhw thx
12:22
@BrunoPereira NP
jrg
jrg
@BrunoPereira not if it wants to remove unity! ;P
beta freeze in effect
Yes, no Ubuntu Studio Beta 1 build still:(
jrg
jrg
@jokerdino ok, so why aren't they showing up for me now?
12:23
@jrg install ubuntu-wallpapers
they won't if you do apt-get upgrade
jrg
jrg
IT IS INSTALLED. :P
@jrg lol, it's the best part of upgrading: "Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."
@aking1012 yeah, I am just too lazy to check
September 6th Beta 1
jrg
jrg
@BrunoPereira Unlike some of you, i'm cheap. Can't run lots of VMs on my hardware. ;P
@jrg then how are they not showing up?
jrg
jrg
12:24
I run Ubuntu+1 as my daily driver for most of the year.
AH-HA! logged out and back in, now they show.
I like the bird.
i think contest.xml isn't working
jrg
jrg
no, i think brain.jrg is taking a day off.
@jrg What are the magic numbers for .jrg files?
jrg
jrg
@ObsessiveFOSS 7777.
Hello to all of you
sigh
12:27
@AmithKK \o
jrg
jrg
@AmithKK howdy
@smartboyhw Hey
@jrg Hello
@jrg That's in hex? Or octal?
jrg
jrg
@ObsessiveFOSS You don't understand. .jrg files are special.
@jrg But they are still stored on disk. 7777 is in base what?
Or am I wrong?
12:29
@ObsessiveFOSS It's in the cloud
jrg
jrg
@ObsessiveFOSS Nonononono. .jrg files are special. They live in teh cloudz. Teh cloudz have no use for things such as hex and octal, ya hear?
i thought .jrg files only ran in the rails version of this: bellard.org/jslinux
@jrg So .jrg only runs on quantum architectures?
jrg
jrg
@aking1012 ooohhh, that jslinux one.
@aking1012 They also run under .NET - it's a family thing.
@ObsessiveFOSS Something like that.
@jrg ah that's cool
12:32
@jrg that asm programming course video set i referenced a while back, one of the ex-students wrote a js emulator for the microprocessor in question. that was kind of neat i thought
@jokerdino That IS extremely cool
jrg
jrg
@aking1012 ah, gotcha.
really tempted to try and compile vim
heck, lets just start with tree.
how do i remove a openpgp key?
from commandline
is it just me or is this answer completely irrelevant?
0
A: Boot menu won't appear after installing Ubuntu 11.10

Fernhill Linux ProjectI have encountered a similar problem previously, a blank screen until the Ubuntu login using an older LCD monitor. The monitor displayed "frequency out of range". This can be resolved by using the 'out-of-range' option in the advanced section of boot repair or editing grub manually. Have a look...

is removing .gnupg directory enough?
12:38
problem isn't "similar" at all
jrg
jrg
@jokerdino thats only if you want to remove all your keys
you should be able to do it inside seahorse.
@jrg all keys as in?
i got no seahorse in VPS
jrg
jrg
@jokerdino if you have multiple pgp keys, then removing ~/.gnupg will remove all.
oh, yeah. that should do the trick then.
@SirCharlo haha...
@jrg you can have multiple of them for each email eh?
12:40
@SirCharlo Flagged. Not relevant AT ALL
jrg
jrg
you can have a lot of them.
oh right.
i have only one and i think i am fine then
i was wondering if i was biased
removed ssh keys and openpgp keys in VPS. restarting.
exit
oops
jrg
jrg
12:42
wrong window?
yeah.
didn't pay attention which one had focus
That's quiet
Ah, so close to Guru badge.
...
@jokerdino How close/
@smartboyhw Pretty close. By 3 I think.
12:50
Answer one more question:)
doesn't work that way :)
Oh.
How does it work then?
Ah, some generous upvoter reduced the margin by 1. Thanks anon :P
Don't know.
12:53
Hmm...
> anon: having no known name or identity or known source
@SirCharlo LOL
You got 1096 rep now jokerdino
jrg
jrg
only need one more @jokerdino.
@jrg yay thanks
@smartboyhw o.O
@jokerdino ?
12:55
I lost some 10000 rep?
jrg
jrg
you're looking at the month view @smartboyhw
11601 actually
I accidentally looked at the month:(
@jrg yep looks like it.
jrg
jrg
just need one more vote here eh? - askubuntu.com/questions/84050/…
12:57
yeah, all thanks to the 40 upvoters and 1 downvoter :P
hey - why is my name in that answer? ;)
@fossfreedom :D
Thanks all <3
