fine. i'll share it. You guys are no fun anymore.

jrg
ok, looks like you got the green light.

Hmm who gave the green light?

jrg
I just had a quick chat with the other mods.

alright then. then you share it and finish the proceedings.

jrg
Oh, so now you're going to let me do the dirty work. grumble ;)

3:03 PM
:>

grumble

so, we have a lot of 10k+ users who can't be identified on G+ :/
but I persist!!!

jrg
ok, circle shared. With a lame explanation, but it's shared.

@jokerdino @jrg @aking1012 came and went before you were looking. Like a Ninja......

3:06 PM
obligatory +1
@blueXrider heh

@jokerdino under the darkness

Later guys..........outta here

bye

3:12 PM
@blueXrider i still see u ;)

Should this question be closed? It seems that at best, it's a bug report, and at worst, it's just a non constructive bitch fest. askubuntu.com/q/140255/8500
then again, maybe I just have my bug triager glasses on...

izx
@psusi Well, Monsieur Pons is famously ornery... ;)

ok i have 13/30 people in my circle.

jrg
The meta post which is incoming is about to get nasty.
(well, once the meta feed catches up.)

Q: Was this site initially concieved implicitly for the Gnome/Unity desktop environment?

cipricusAnd adjacently: is there an intention to organize this site in different subcategories for the different members/desktop environments of the Ubuntu family?

@psusi if he had just let it go, it was an okay question...the run-on in comments was just poor

@izx the heck?
there is a very serious typo on conceived there.

izx
@jokerdino Maybe that was the post @jrg was referring to? I'm just glad he didn't say "conceively" :D

LOL

@jokerdino ... "i before e except after c"
2

3:23 PM
help me find the remaining 15

jrg
we're doing 10k+ all time, right?

yeah

jrg
also, I don't count as a 10k+ user.
So remove me from that.

except for you
i made an exception.

jrg
Might as well include Nathan.

3:26 PM
because you were the 30th member

The name is familiar

change to top users of AU?

jrg
I don't know, up to you.

we can do first two pages

I too have a circle with name "Awesome ubunteros" only 7 there

3:28 PM
:/
circle the people i shared?

not yet
I should do some patent on the Name.

@aking1012, so I think what we've got here then is "is there a workaround for this bug?"... so we close questions directly about bugs, but asking if there is a workaround is ok?

o.O

@psusi fair point. i could view it as a bug report
i've previously somewhere on meta alluded to something similar (i think it was in relation to impossible questions: i want a video-sink to mess around with skype or some such that doesn't exist)

I can see asking for a workaround as being a useful question, but the line between that and what we normally close as bug is kind of blurry

3:33 PM
why did i forget to include myself in that circle???!

izx
It's typically more productive to ask for a workaround at the legit bug report page...

agreed on both counts. also, i think saying his keystrikes are limited because repeat rate is limited is grossly inaccurate. i would imagine repeat strikes could go over 100/min

Q: Was this site initially conceived implicitly for the Gnome/Unity desktop environment?

cipricusAnd adjacently: is there an intention to organize this site in different subcategories for the different members/desktop environments of the Ubuntu family?

izx
@aking1012 Easily. But like you, something about his denigrating tone just turns me off.

@jokerdino this circle is a dupe to this one

izx
3:37 PM
@AnwarShah So close-vote it ;)

@AnwarShah NOOO

@aking1012, eh? he is complaining because the auto repeat rate is no longer as high as 100/second

I need help. please mod, delete the circle.

lol funny

@psusi yes. his final comment implied that it somehow limited his typing speed

3:39 PM
@aking1012, ahh... I gather what he's really getting at is that it is limiting how quickly he can scroll... which you really should be doing mass scrolling with pgup/dn instead of lots and lots of one liners

izx
Well he has a Das Keyboard - Click Clack Ooh so dammit, he's ENTITLED to a 10000cps repeat rate!

okay. i'm close-voting given the comments casting it in a bug-complaint light instead of a desired workaround light

I am not allowed to comment on the dupe circle !

@AnwarShah ??

@jokerdino Not allowed to comment on the post.

3:42 PM
i don't think i locked you out?
you should be able to comment

I tried, but failed

check now

checked and commented.
now give your close vote

hmm it is not a dupe.
i have 15 people.

Can somebody fill me in on what I missed while away?

3:49 PM
Hello all

i have 17. I won

@AmithKK o/

@aking1012 Hello \o

@AmithKK good day.

@AnwarShah Heya :D

3:53 PM
I lost the game.

Wait
My lcd came with no headers -_-

@izx askubuntu.com/questions/161273/… "As always" in that comment is a lie.

@AmithKK may be it came with footers
just kidding

izx
@ObsessiveFOSS Deleted :p

@izx Thanks...

3:59 PM
good night yo!

@jokerdino Good knight

hah knight

jrg
@jorgecastro PURGE ALLLLLLLL THE COMMENTS.
(Thanks for the flag)

My identicon haunts me.
Is there any important cleanup to be done on AU now?

there were some questions in crusaders of the lost downboat

4:04 PM
@ObsessiveFOSS yes, we can always use more cleanup efforts
We're at 80% answer rate. We really want to try to get that above 85%

jrg
which means about 1K questions need to get answered.

"Answered"

@jokerdino Good Night

@jrg ... let @izx go for it ... probably will get to 7 digit rep mark by next tuesday...

jrg
@AmithKK Nobody who hangs out here works for OMG! anymore.
@fossfreedom Heh. :D

4:09 PM
@fossfreedom 5kkkkkkk

Hey - anyone about can help with an AU account?
or should I ask elsewhere

@Elfy Depends on the problem. We have a few moderators here now.

jrg
whats up?

lurks

I logged out - then logged back in - LP address had been changed a while back - I'm the elfy that wrote this question askubuntu.com/questions/117366/… and now AU thinks I am askubuntu.com/users/71427/user71427
confused

4:20 PM
Ah, I see the problem @Elfy we can fix that up in just a min

woot
trying to add stuff to that question lol

I just merged the two accounts, the "Login" for the other account was pointed to your old LP name. That's what AU uses to log you in.

ok - so logo out needed?

Shouldn't, but it might
In the future, you can go to you profile page (when you're logged in) and add/remove authorized log-in points (under the my logins link)

seems to be ok - if I get any oddities I will logout etc
I thought I did that marco - nvm - all sorted - thanks :)

4:24 PM
right, and if there's no mods in the chat room feel to post on Meta

jrg
@Flabricorn I was talking to my sister and she confirmed that she is the purple linux distro user who's brother is a coder. So much fun putting things together. ;P

@MarcoCeppi Ok :)

izx
@jrg LOLs. Then ROFLs as @Flabricorn pins his hopes on Nixie

jrg
@izx grin

Hello all

4:31 PM
@Takkat Hi.

izx
Hey @Takkat

what a warm welcome :)

izx
@fossfreedom Hey, I just follow Bruno's advice: "If you answer it, rep will come." ;)
Speaking of answered rate, I think we should start looking at questions that have a zero-voted answer which, in someone semi-knowing's opinion, deserves an upvote

jrg
Fair enough.

^^^^ this site gathers them for you automagically

izx
4:41 PM
@JorgeCastro That looks...effing fantastic!!

indeed
it's a good "what to vote on today"

BBT
Good Night

cya @AmithKK
My tags unanswered are mostly one of those "no sound" questions... :/

It knows you are an expert!
man, if there's one StackExchange feature I wish would move to 20k users only, it's BOLD.

Not at all on "no sound" - its like no sound == no fun
lol BOLD

izx
4:49 PM
BTW if anyone has any worthy questions in mind, looking to bounty 150-200 rep on one or more Qs..

me too!

same here.

jrg
I'll bounty up to 9.8K. Then SE will yell at me, strip my diamond and i'll be back to Jorge approving my edits for me. ;)
So, who's got the list? Let's get started!

Can you answer this? Remaster Ubuntu to create LiveCD that has both Unity and GNOME Shell http://askubuntu.com/questions/65151/remaster-ubuntu-to-create-livecd-that-has-both-unity-and-gnome-shell?atw=1 #remastersys

izx
Can we dupe ^^^ to Karthik's LiveCD question, which deals with customizing a LiveCD to add Gnome plus other tweaks?

4:55 PM
@izx that is one ama-Zing answer

@izx Makes sense to me.

izx
@aking1012 With +500 bounties on each release, it's no wonder most answers to that question are amazing ;)
@EliahKagan Thanks, I'm out of CVs for the day...

@izx I don't know. Are you asking if I/O can be done using those device nodes, or are you asking if it can be done in text mode?
Btw @izx, it looks like this question might actually be a Broadcom wireless problem. Any ideas?
@izx If you're asking if you can access the device as a drive that way, I would certainly think not!

izx
@EliahKagan Well, from the user's perspective and tags, looks like from Python using that device node...and that Netchip thing actually looks like a USB hub/controller, not a USB device per se

@izx You may be able to post an answer, then.

izx
5:08 PM
@EliahKagan I'll ask him to clarify and give us a bigger picture in a comment.

man we seriously need to consolidate these black screen questions
it's basically anybody's guess on those

jrg
Or just close them all as bug?

izx
@EliahKagan Well, it looks like b43-fwcutter, etc. may solve this, but I wonder why it's halting instead of just eventually timing out and continuing?

well some of them are just config/boot options
I think having an answer outlining all the possible workarounds you can check before filing a bug
which all exists, spread out over every black screen question, heh
If someone finds a nice generic black screen one I'd be happy to drop like a a 1k bounty
7
I'm sick of all these black screen questions all over the place, it ruins my OCD
2

jrg
shrugs it's a PSA. I'll unpin once we get a good one.

izx
5:11 PM
The simple answer to black screen on LiveCD is - `nomodeset`
...upon first bootup is `nomodeset` and install your `nvidia`/`nvidia-legacy` drivers.
99% of the time it's an Nvidia/Optimus gfx card involved.

@izx Hey, neat... the netchip usb thing? They make a usb to PCIe bridge. External GPU computing anyone? (was googling about what hardware that might be)

@izx yeah we just need all that crap in one place

izx
@aking1012 Well, they make lots of things but the fingerprint scanner he wants to communicate with via the dev node ain't one of them...

like a canonical question instead of 50 scattered ones
I know we have some somewhere
878

izx
Eliah and I did our bit yesterday for the ones that say we get a black/blank screen instead of the Grub menu.

5:13 PM
@jrg so I was just thinking
a list of possible solutions, things like boot arguments
and then the last one is "well, you're probabyl screwed, here's how to file a bug"
and then dupe all that crap to the one question

i like that idea...

jrg
Just ask one, I can dupe all next weekend.

ok so we need to find a black screen one that has a bunch of answers on it already
and then just fix it up instead of rewriting from scratch?

izx
I think scratch is easier, with a CW answer to cover all common scenarios and edge cases individuals have experienced

ok on it

izx
5:17 PM
There's enough material scattered in different Q/A, including screenshots, that we can re-use.

explodes on entry sup

indeed
on it now

izx
Can we close this black screen one as too localized? OP said he solved it and it was a hardware issue specific to his laptop/configuration:
1
Q: Black screen after installation

VaulI have an Acer laptop with a Intel GMA4500MHD graphic card, after the installation of Ubuntu from an alternate install cd I get only a black screen after the grub selection pages. I tried something in this page and I still have the problem. I have tried with Debian testing and I have the same pr...

close as what?
localized?

izx
@LordofTime Yeah, sorry, edited that in...

5:20 PM
:P
@izx $entity_LordOfTime.action(VTC:Localized) [ DONE ]

izx
Thanks :)

Pity I can't just say....you know I really trust @izx...I'll just give him some of my votes to dispense as he desires

jrg
Meh, it's a pity that I've got too much time on my hands.

@jrg i thought you were tagpurging

izx
@aking1012 Appreciate the metaphorical vote of confidence :)

5:24 PM
np, you earned it

3 hours ago, by Lord of Time
uses the BFG to sink the evil :P
^ that should be tagged to be always visible XD
speaking of sinking evil though
begins a /review run

@izx I gotta get back to work, but I'll start collating stuff afterwards

izx
@JorgeCastro Thanks, I'll start looking at at least the boot parameters part.

I know we have a boot parameter question somewhere

I made a shot once: askubuntu.com/a/134081/3940

jrg
5:29 PM
that was for the liveCD.
we need one for normal GRUB.

kk but it may cover installation type issues

@Lord of Time: I've just edited the question :)
no error output in the terminal

@jrg foss made one: askubuntu.com/a/38834/3940

For the hell of it, try installing network-manager-kde and see if this fixes it. that's network manager's KDE plasmawidget — Lord of Time 23 secs ago
(revised)

jrg
stop adding half-answers as a comment, please.

5:35 PM
@jrg its a diagnostic step
@jrg i'm trying to diagnose whether its the software or a lack of support
if it works, i'll put it as an answer

jrg
@LordofTime fair enough.

if it does not, well, then we've eliminated the network management software as the cause
that's how i run, diagnostic-step prior to posting as answer
because more than likely the diagnostic step doesn't actually solve the problem, but can lead to another (especially with network cards and graphics cards and stuff)
(you should see how many "my wifi doesnt work since upgrading" things we get on IRC XD)

@izx Also if one answer gets too unweildy/large we can split it and manually add a TOC in the question.

izx
@JorgeCastro That may be best, since we can't jump to inline anchors with markdown.

jrg
I think a TOC type question might work better.

5:37 PM
@Jorge you mean an answer like this one?

izx
I think we should make it multiple answers to the same Q, with the TOC in the Q itself.

1
Q: Let's consolidate "black screen on boot" questions

Jorge CastroWe have 858 questions about this, it's probably time to consolidate this into one good CW and start duping things instead of having it all over the site, so we made this: My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? Discussions/ideas can go in this meta post.

jrg
@AskUbuntuMeta Late to the party.

@Lord No I meant for the one we're making now
@izx Ok, right now I've made 3 answers to be sort of like major categories

@JorgeCastro link when done?

5:39 PM
it's the one the bot just posted

Is there anyway to know if your flags were considered "good"?

epic answer dude, /me rewards

$LordOfTime.slap($bot_AskUbuntuMeta)

jrg
@JorgeCastro do you want that question CWed?

5:40 PM
@CoreyWhitaker your "helpful flag" count off of the user profile

change the 235 to your user number ^^^
@jrg sure

jrg
mkay, all done.

@LordofTime Thanks!

wow, @Jorgecastro, giving me +250... want to do that for the other bugs question i posted and answered simultaneously? xD (askubuntu.com/questions/153692/…) (kidding btw)
@CoreyWhitaker no problem. i use it all the time to find modfeedback on my > 300 flags xD

I am full up on bounties now unfortunately
I'll get to your other question eventually though

5:42 PM
holy... not this playlist again...
there's a reason its tagged as [EVIL - DO NOT LISTEN TO]

@LordofTime I'm trying to flag as I find stuff but I'm not entirely sure of the rules so I just flag what I think is blatantly obvious

slaps banshee

@LordofTime I agree completely.
Rhythmbox runs circles around Banshee.

@GeorgeEdison you are on webupd8 today!

@CoreyWhitaker tips: If its not an answer, flag it. If its a dupe of another question, flag it. If you think something else is wrong, flag it and be descriptive.

@CoreyWhitaker if in doubt, poke me or @EliahKagan.
or @Jorge
he'd know too :P
(or @jrg, but we save the flags queue stabs for him for when i flood the flags queue with Not an Answer flags xD)

@LordofTime - Will do, thanks for all the help. EliahKagan was on top of everything yesterday.

@JorgeCastro I just read your message.
Thanks for letting me know.

indeed, @Eliah's wonderful at that
@GeorgeEdison Rythmbox segv'd on this system so...
(still unresolved, crash bug was upstreamed)

izx
@JorgeCastro That looks fine, we can always make more ;)

5:45 PM
indeedy!

@LordofTime What's left then? :)

@GeorgeEdison *cough* itunes on windows *cough*

iTunes is nice... but (as you mentioned) it only runs on Windows.

points at VBox
epic workaround!

If you have a spare Windows license, it is.

5:47 PM
*cough*MSDN*cough*

@jrg Hey jrg, this was someone else I met. I promise you not your eight year old sister.

@JorgeCastro I saw a lot of your community wiki questions and answers, which are a great idea. Are there plans to put them in an tag?

picks up the BFG, begins polishing it prior to the next run for sinking the Evil

jrg
@Flabricorn heh, ok. ;)

This was when I was playing tennis the other day in the "real world".
I can't decide between Unity and Gnome Classic... so now I have both and I don't like either now.

5:52 PM
so... @JorgeCastro, is one of your duties to upvote people and give them rep bonuses when they ask really good canonical questions and provide really good canonical answers?
because it seems to me that's one of your duties xD

izx
Flabricorn appears to be really spinnnnning his yarn :P

@LordofTime MSDN?

I've decided that Unity Dock in Classic doesn't belong. Away with you!

detects more Evil on AskUbuntu
@GeorgeEdison "MicroSoft Developer Network". I have a license, because i occasionally test migration between older and newer Windows server software in testing environments (hence the license with access to MS SQL server and Windows Server 2k8 stuffs) for work

izx
@GeorgeEdison Don't most of us have WinXP COAs from our old machines that no longer work?

5:54 PM
was that starred for irony?

@izx I have a Vista license, but I'm pretty sure it's OEM.
@LordofTime How much does that cost?

@GeorgeEdison EXPENSIVE
its why the employer pays for it and not me :P

I thought so.

MSDN is helpful for pretending that you're only testing something, then putting Win7 on computers for free.

@GeorgeEdison msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/hh442902.aspx see Operating Systems license. $699USD

5:56 PM
I am a Microsoft Connect member...

($499 for the renewal in a year)
has a "Visual Studio Professional with MSDN" license (third column)

Oh sweet - MSDN magazine is included.

izx
@GeorgeEdison, you can sign up for their BizSpark program, which is valid for 3 years and IIRC FREE, given that:
Developing software?
Privately held?
Less than three years old?
Making less than US $1M annually?

@izx Yeah, I make less than $1 million annually. :)

izx
Heh. "There are no costs or fees associated with being a Microsoft BizSpark Network Partner. Network Partners must simply agree to program terms and conditions. "
The other option is to register for an online course or something for a semester at your local community college, and get a subsidized copy of Windows that you can still legally use after you're no longer a student.
