2:00 AM
like a seperate standard PSU or one of those switching power regulators?

@aking1012 Damn good graphics though.

jrg
Ok, i'm out for the night. Talk to you all in the morning.

later on @jrg
@Flabricorn yeah...i can run crysis2 at full for at least a half-hour before the card overheats

@jrg Alright see you later.
@aking1012 My best card? My Radeon 9600.

I have a AMD Radeon 6970 with 2 GB of GDDR5... it doesn't care what I run.

izx
2:02 AM
It's a shame I took 10 months after my first answer to come back and become active on AU :/

@aking1012 Second best is my Nvidia 5200. Damn Dell and their BTX Motherboards.

It's a shame I just realized what AU stood for.

@Flabricorn this is my desktop

o0
@Flabricorn: the dell i have is a mini atx

izx
2:03 AM
@aking1012 What's the res on each display?

I only have a gforce 450 (the ddr3/passive cooling version)
getting a 560 or 660 sooner or later

@JourneymanGeek I have a Dimension 3000. :)
PCI Motherboard.

izx
I had a choice between 3x 1920x1080 TN or 2x 1920x1200 IPS; needless to say went with the latter (serious amateur photographer)

@izx 1600x900
according to xrandr

izx
sweet!

2:05 AM
my video card costed as much as my pc

izx
WTF? Do you game lots?

i want to get in to opencl programming

izx
Ah that explains it.

@Flabricorn: dell 530 i pulled out of the dumpster. Currently inside a cosair 600T, with a mechanical keyboard.. amusingly

I have a friend that has a PC, $100 less than his card/

2:06 AM
is working on building a gaming rig

jrg
My backup drive cost as much as my primary laptop. Granted, I got the HDD like 4 years ago, so prices were different then. ;P
(apt-get update isn't finished yet. :P)

@JourneymanGeek this card was relatively cheap considering, but they don't make them any more

@JourneymanGeek Same, as soon as I have that green papery thing they call "Money".

@aking1012: motherboard cost. 0. Everything else at the moment? 300 bucks and counting

possibly related to the overheat issue

2:07 AM
@Flabricorn: currently saving up

@JourneymanGeek Same, the PowerMac isn't bad, just NOTHING is effing supported.

Mac == PCcost * 2

izx
@aking1012 The barriers for CUDA are a lot less...why doesn't ATI have that policy?

PowerMac - Outdated PowerPC based mac - $40.00
@JourneymanGeek Damn, the Dell 530 is a lot better of a machine than the Dimension 3000.

@izx If I ever make something, I want it to be portable...and I pulled 1440 SPUs + gaming performance without making the jump to Nvidia (I disagree with their bribery policy)...although if I want it to work on BSD I have to use Nvidia

2:10 AM
Bleah - "Nvidia".

izx
@aking1012 Oh I understand, I was wondering more why ATI isn't pushing OpenCL more by lowering the entry barriers

they sort of are with the "opencl VM" thing they have in their sdk

izx
As for me, I looked at CUDA/OpenCL a while back and said no thanks, I'll stick to my FPGAs ;) waits for another Blender comment from aking :P

no, i like FPGA programming. GPU programming is just more accessible and universal

izx
True dat.

2:13 AM
@jrg Damn, that's a long apt-get update.

Hmm I find this fishy.

izx
He probably took my advice and established that cantenna PTP wifi link ;)

Where did all my mouse cord slack go?

did someone say cantenna?

izx
2:14 AM
@jokerdino: I've grown to like Unity, it does the job for a power-user. Gnome3 is too sparse, and KDE4 too garish; but gnome-fallback still rocks.

@izx I use i3-wm

izx
cantenna cantenna cantenna Pringles Pringles Pringles

oh god

Gnome-Classic, is the way to go.

izx
OH GOD! (at i3-wm)

2:15 AM
@izx look closely at that image...

@aking1012 Pringles

OH GOD

Especially since my graphics drivers can't handle the UI on Gnome 3.

izx
@aking1012 aha!

OH GOD

2:16 AM
Whao.

anyone else use xampp or notify-send ...

i wrote something in python once that used xampp

0
A: How to force a new Notification in notify-osd to show up without waiting for the earlier one to exit?

mateo_saltaI figured it out using the patch for this bug at - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libnotify/+bug/257135?comments=all Follow these directions to first install a patched version, and run a script that makes use of the program changes. First, put the patch text in a new file(ie. open g...

Hmm, Not I.

@mateo_salta looking

2:18 AM
I was hoping someone could test the answer, involving a patch and source code... hopefully I didn't misspell something

that seems to be more related to notifyd

izx
@jokerdino God probably uses OS X ;) vvvvvv

yeah, and a shell script

Can anyone here help me with a .run issue?

izx
@mateo_salta You can't override it with notify-send (I've tried); you can decrease the show-time though.

2:20 AM
seems to me, the solution is threading or multiprocess in a language that supports it instead of shell scripts and patches

There is a patch, that is part of the answer, the patch provides an override

izx
Bleh, then it's not universal.

if you have to apply a patch, i don't think it's an answer for au

I like the aptitude easter egg.

the patch was from a bug on launchpad...

2:21 AM
I disagree. I think it is a valid answer for power users at least.
@mateosalta you could have edited the previous answer and undeleted?

I take your point, but I disagree with your conclusion. I don't think AU is built for users that know how to compile things

But I hate to exclude them.

izx
I agree with @jokerdino -- while questions that are too localized should not be encouraged, answers are fine.

that had nothing to do with this answer, so that was just pointing out errors he made in cuting and pasting(not a real answer)

@mateo_salta hmm yeah it is downvoted. I tihnk you are doing it right.

2:23 AM
wait...i just saw it was a question by nirmik...which immediately makes me think it's a complaint
@jokerdino fair point

izx
@mateosalta: I take that back, bug is old but patch is dated as of May 2012

wouldn't it be simpler to call a python script that does another process than to apply a patch and move away from a stock install?
stock install favoritism for the win

don't know... If you know python maybe...

izx
@mateosalta: I like the answer, but it needs to use the simple (debian) way of dl source/patch/compile instead of a raw make

2:28 AM
all i was getting at is fire the event, the python script runs a process and forgets about it and quits...then the problem is moot

yeah, if someone wants to package it that would be awesome.

@mateo_salta clarify that

@mateo use checkinstall instead of make install

izx
In general,that means
1. Add source repositories, if not already there.
2. apt-get source libnotify-bin
3. apt-get build-dep linbotify-bin
4. cd libnotify-bin_x.x.x.x
5. patch -p1,etc.
6. dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc
7. cd .. & dpkg -i libnotify-bin-x.x.x.deb

clarify what?

izx
2:30 AM
@jokerdino That's a bad idea for an Ubuntu/Debian source pkg...

@izx hmm i read it otherwise

izx
I could put it up in a PPA....
@jokerdino It's better than raw make, worse than just using the debian dpkg chain

that would make things so simpler, I know i'm fine with compiling, but others see red when they see ./configure make sudo make install

@izx but i would generate a deb file myself though. good point.

izx
Also, downloading the original source is oftne a bad idea, because it excludes any Debian/Ubuntu patches to it (and there are often quite a few)

2:32 AM
If you do that, I'll make it a wiki

all i'm saying is if it's a simple patch to apply, apply it and push it to ppa...then the answer becomes "add this ppa and it works" instead of 5 pages of text

but we are talking about libnotify..

if I had my own ppa... I need to look into that someday

izx
@jokerdino: no, dpkg-source: info: unpacking libnotify_0.7.5-1.debian.tar.gz

@mateo_salta just do it

2:34 AM
@izx i was talking about notify-osd

@mateosalta - you can have a relatively unlimited (i'm not aware of a limit) of ppas
both of my populated ppas are to answer questions for AU

so how to get the patched version into a package...

8 mins ago, by izx
In general,that means
1. Add source repositories, if not already there.
2. apt-get source libnotify-bin
3. apt-get build-dep linbotify-bin
4. cd libnotify-bin_x.x.x.x
5. patch -p1,etc.
6. dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc
7. cd .. & dpkg -i libnotify-bin-x.x.x.deb

grab the deb-src of the original package. apply the patch. debuild -S
@jokerdino that

step 6 should be modified
or it might work. debuild -S runs dpkg-buildpackage

2:38 AM
it has to be signed to be on ppa

that one is dput
@mateosalta let us know when you are stuck. i guess we all have some experience with PPA to help you out there.

~/Desktop/debian$ debuild -S
debuild: found debian/changelog for package libnotify in the directory
  /home/mateo/Desktop
but this directory name does not match the package name according to the
regex  PACKAGE(-.+)?.

To run debuild on this package, see the --check-dirname-level and
--check-dirname-regex options; run debuild --help for more info.

and I have experience with MOTU work :-)

oh, hold on

control file?

@aking1012 i need help with making recipes.
i want someone to make a recipe for GTG trunk :) but that won't work. so i need help

recipes? like juju? or something else?

PPA recipe?

izx
Oh, you're building it @mateosalta....I already uploaded to PPA :(

@izx good call

2:43 AM
we'll teach him packaging xD

izx
But feel free to continue, it's an educational exercise

@jokerdino bzr recipes irritated me and i walked away. the thing was...upsetting

@aking1012 o0

izx
@mateo_salta why are you running debuild from there? use apt-get source first ....

@jokerdino there's not a concise readable example that works for a real package

2:44 AM
:/

basically i feel if i'm building documentation for what for all practical intents and purposes is canonical documentation, i should be employed by canoncial. until i get to that point, i'll stick to git and agnostic tools

izx
@mateosalta: see answer to this Q, and lmk, I'll modify it as needed:
4
A: Steps for creating a slightly modified package and uploading it in a PPA?

izx So, are there some simple steps to take for this task? It is only "simple" if you start with a package that exists in the Ubuntu or Debian repositories. Here's an outline: Use apt-get source to download the sources/diffs for the package and apply them. Go in inside the directory, apply you...

i hope that didn't come across poorly

@aking1012 dude, they were looking for someone to write documentation
you should have applied for the job

fair point

izx
Nice, build queues have emptied after Showdown....

@izx lollerskates

@izx I am not surprised.

@jokerdino should have is passed tense. is it still open? i'll apply today if it is

@aking1012 yep

izx
2:49 AM
DO IT. I COMMAND THEE. </lordoftime> :P
2

@izx hahaha :P

i love it when peeps make me smile star

I love it when peeps smile star

well, I'll sleep on that, start fresh thanks for all the help everyone, hopefully soon I'll be packaging stuff...

@mateo_salta good night and good luck

izx
2:51 AM
^^^ that

@aking1012 it's actually future tense.

erm...what?

"should have" is FT

no. it is not.
do you have a problem with me referring to you as the "How did you find out about this opening?"

Wiki is not wrong I suppose.
@aking1012 I guess I am fine.

2:55 AM

It's not like they will query me =)

this is what i was asking about...

Should be fine I suppose.

kk

some canonical people know me =)

izx
2:56 AM
@jokerdino No, it's past conditional <---- wiki

I think it is future implication.

i should do something is future tense. i have done something is passed tense. i should have done something is passed + decision. it's not future. @izx is right

yick, right.

izx
Wanna bother the English.SE people just for kicks?

should have is FT, should have applied is past perfect
i missed the actual verb
@izx i don't mind :D

izx
2:58 AM
Nah, a little busy right now. Let's schedule the next invasion though.... ;)

@jokerdino yep yep...i was looking at the context without the possibility of i should have eggs next week

yeah got it

anyone want to provide feedback on the application fields?

Where?

momentarily on googledocs

3:10 AM
Hey guys... what's up with this? "-98 9 mins ago reversal Serial upvoting reversed"

izx
O.o

It is exactly what it reads.

Why did it get reversed? And what's Serial upvoting? Was it my fault?

askubuntu.com/users/76027/… That doesn't look elegant.

is there a way to access ext4 partitions in Windows?

3:11 AM
@msPeachy not natively

@msPeachy - Yes, Windows 7 supports it. Otherwise use ext2fsd

what does natively mean? :P

Natively means without extra software, or it's built into the OS so to say

@CoreyWhitaker I've booted to Windows 7 but I can't see my ext4 partitions

3:12 AM
kernel sucks.

@jokerdino lol

Not incorrect :D

izx
@CoreyWhitaker No, not your fault -- someone (single user) upvoted a LOT of your answers very quickly in a row.

@jokerdino not correct either?

@izx - If it was legitimate, why does it matter? I'm just confused.

3:14 AM
if anyone has recommendations

@izx - Thanks for the link, I'm looking into it now. Is there anyway that I can see who caused it?

@msPeachy well you need to install extra apps to access ext4

izx
It's to prevent abuse...see meta.SO answer for more details on the reasoning behind it.
@CoreyWhitaker No.

hey izx...:P

@CoreyWhitaker i can tell it is one of the new users of the site.

izx
3:15 AM
@msPeachy Hey! So ext4 from Windows is difficult. Is your initramfs still not working?

i don't see the initramfs error anymore but Ubuntu is still taking a very very long time to boot.

@jokerdino How can you tell that?

izx
Pastebin dmesg output please...

where do i get dmesg?

@CoreyWhitaker old users know serial upvoting will be reversed.

3:17 AM
@msPeachy /var/log/dmesg
@jokerdino Makes sense lol

i will serial upvote @jokerdino :P

izx
@msPeachy I prefer the live command (just type it in a terminal). Here's my stock comment:
Please share the content or output of the following commands/files to better help us troubleshoot your problem (instructions in this answer): file(s): /var/log/kern.log, command(s): dmesg

Can't you use tail /var/log/dmesg ?

izx
@jokerdino That's why we keep it to a few at a time ;)

@CoreyWhitaker thanks will try that later if I can boot into Ubuntu, frankly I'd rather run the liveCD than use my installed Ubuntu

3:19 AM
@CoreyWhitaker you pulled at least one upgoat from me. i had a feeling you would miss the mark related to serial upgoating...i had the same situation once

@izx thank you!

:)
@msPeachy Dare I ask why??!
@izx the many nuisances of the site

izx
@CoreyWhitaker Since it's a repeated situation, from current boot till now is all I generally ask for.
Besides, the log is sometimes less-updated:
$ tail -n 1 /var/log/dmesg
    [    4.585252] type=1400 audit(1341614061.291:8): apparmor="STATUS" operation="profile_load" name="/usr/sbin/tcpdump" pid=734 comm="apparmor_parser"

$ dmesg | tail -n 1
[   14.569965] eth0: no IPv6 routers present

so the doc post had at least 2 anon viewers...even a "looks fine", would be appreciated before i submit it
corrected spelling btw

@aking1012 hmm just a suggestion. Try to provide the interviewers evrything they want to see.

3:22 AM
@izx tried that yesterday, I wasn't able to install pastebinit in the LiveCD

@jokerdino such as...

instead of "go to my profile for link to the article about lens togger on Webupd8"

ok fair point

izx
@aking1012: link to job desc please?

izx
3:22 AM
@msPeachy You need to run sudo apt-get update first, LiveCD has no cached repositories.

Okay... yet another question. Why was my reply on this downvoted? Even if it wasn't the correct answer it was a legitimate reply. askubuntu.com/questions/161778/…

@aking1012 got distracted :/

@izx oh okay

and i am still on the doc

izx
@aking1012 I see the app form, but no job desc?

3:23 AM
@jokerdino np, i was just asking for feedback. take your time, you're doing ME a favor either way
@izx my bad just a sec
better?

izx
gimme a few secs, will look at it

@jokerdino cos I'm a fan

ty. take your time. @msPeachy 's problem is more pressing. i'll be around for a while

@msPeachy hmm okay :/

izx
@CoreyWhitaker I think it may be because what you have described goes for basic HTTP auth, not website login. I have a wikipedia account, but if I'm not logged in I get a page that says "no user", but doesn't ask for authentication.

3:27 AM
@izx So that would only work with sites using .htaccess and .htpasswd?

izx
I'd clarify that in the answer, and also put a polite comment asking the downvoter to explain (if you particularly care about the question) --- I've had people explain, and/or reverse the downvote the few times I've felt attached enough to an answer to do that.
@CoreyWhitaker I believe so, yes.

@jokerdino added link

@izx so after installing pastebinit, i'll just type this on the terminal: pastebinit /var/log/kern.log ???

izx
yes, that's it
and dmesg | pastebinit

@aking1012 rereading

3:30 AM
@izx okay, have to capture my screen now, i am at work and running windows :P
will try this later when i get home. thank you again :P

oatmeal roxx - theoatmeal.com/blog/charity_money (Harsh language)

@jokerdino ty

izx
@aking1012: I would make the "why is this the right job" section also contain something about how Linux on the desktop needs more docs/help to be adoptable, Ubuntu is better but not there yet, you feel you can help it get closer to this goal, etc.
And work AU/PPAs into there.

@izx fair point...i'll ping on revision

izx
Please do.

3:34 AM
Just my opinion. i don't find it compelling enough.

izx
TBH, I have to agree --- I know their questions are generic, but your answers seem like a laundry list. NBD though, we'll help you polish it ;)

:))

what job are you guys talking about??

@msPeachy Doc writer on LP.

izx
Required Skills:
Your written English is well crafted, compelling and fun. You care about how you write, as much as what you write. You’ve produced end-user documentation, developer documentation, blog posts and white papers. What’s more, you enjoy doing it.
You have at least five years’ experience as technical writer, whether that’s professionally or as a consistent contributor to open source projects.

3:35 AM
what's LP?

izx
links to examples would really help -- even newsgroup/mailing list posts would be useful.

links to AU posts, tumblr would be just as awesome.
@msPeachy launchpad

izx
I meant re the five-year "requirement", old stuff. But yes, what @jokerdino said.

@izx Just noted. We need to dig in deeper.

3:38 AM
are you both qualified?

Awh... they won't let me set my location as 127.0.0.1

@msPeachy not me. AKing hopefully is.

@izx - added some data
@jokerdino :)

i like this par: You are willing to travel internationally, for periods of one or two weeks and occasionally longer, for conferences, developer-oriented meetings and sprints.

@msPeachy i have a passport...where do i sign up :)

izx
3:39 AM
@msPeachy To suggest edits to a tech resume? I guess so...

@aking1012 so do i...lol

rode a bike 16 miles one way to work...that goes a long way to the sprint component

izx
But I very much doubt tech writers with that kind of solid "required" experience will be flocking to this job ;)

heh it is a good job.
hmm better than let's say .. chatting in here

it is a great job
lol @jokerdino

3:43 AM
@jokerdino ROFL

izx
Sadly most of my published documentation consists of technical/scientific papers, so I guess unqualified is the verdict ;)

@izx you removed the link, i was about to copy it

I'm not sure I grasp what you just said...unqualified b/c of scientific/technical? They need to be written for users, but documentation should in its first phase be written in technical language by the OP of the code. This way, someone acts as a translator from tech to human

but all the original documentation is factually correct...it allows for lots of possibilities
@msPeachy wait what? why is that posted?

3:47 AM
@msPeachy @aking1012 just trying to be funny. don't leave the chat room

i'll be around...it's relatively difficult to irritate me enough to the point of leaving

@aking1012 now is a good time to get a good gravatar

:/ I'll work on that

@aking1012 this avatar reminds me of Jack Nicholson...

Hmm that one is Back to the Future scientist
so, it is teh same guy i suppose

3:49 AM
@aking1012 i was just reading your profile and resume.
@jokerdino christopher llyod?

izx
@aking1012 I was referring to this bit: "You’ve produced end-user documentation, developer documentation, blog posts and white papers."

@msPeachy yeah

@izx so you're looking for a simple explanation of something linkified?
knows it's not proper english
i would think i could link to specific QA sections where I humanize documentation

izx
@aking1012 I'm lost. In response to @msPeachy's hypothetical question, I meant stuff like this wouldn't qualify for Canonical EU-documentation (and that's the abstract):

got it. i thought it was in response to my query about "You've produced..."

3:54 AM
Hmm @JasperLoy :/

user19161
@jokerdino Hi! No more Bieber today.

Now I expect him to leave the room and come back again and claim I mysteriously pinged him.
@JasperLoy yay \o/

user19161
@jokerdino No, I don't tell lies.

Bieber is bad for your health
2

You just did.

user19161
3:55 AM
@aking1012 Well, it's OK. I don't eat him.

mister funnyman is funny
seeking out more ice for my coffee brb

user19161
@jokerdino Is there a way to mute chat pings?

@JasperLoy Click on the button in the top right?

user19161
@jokerdino Is the setting saved?

I guess so?

izx
3:57 AM

Thanks @izx

user19161
@jokerdino So you only need to do it once?

izx
@JasperLoy: ask a question on meta and I'll tell ya ;)

It might be resetted if you restart browser. I don't know.

@jokerdino my guess is that is situational and based on cookie storage clearing

3:59 AM
I think that way myself.

izx
@jokerdino It appears to be browser-linked, not account-linked, that's for sure.

At least they are not using flash anymroe.

user19161
OK ping me now.

@JasperLoy ping

user19161
@jokerdino No sound!
