it's 2 am here

it's 8 am here

bob
well that's what I mean, time to wake up
are you in china or something ?

:/
In Singapore

bob
alternatively if you can't answer this, I have another question
would you like to hear about it?

oh sure

bob
12:03 AM
why doesn't the memory shown in ps aux doesn't add up to free -m
I mean, not even close
a few GB apart

i have seen a similar question somewhere

bob

Q: memory usage doesn't add up

bobIf I add up all the memory usage I get from top -b -n 1 or htop or ps aux, I get a number that is a few GB under what I get with free. The kernel could account for some of that memory, but not up to a few GB, could it ?

I asked it

bob
I added a comment to my question

well great, you could have edited your question though

bob
12:13 AM
ok I will
so regarding my first question
about nbsp
any idea?

nope

bob
ok
an easier one then maybe? :)

yeah

bob
how to automatically mount an internal drive ?
at boot time
with 12.04

i don't know about that. i never automount anything

bob
12:29 AM
/etc/fstab apparently but I don't know what to put in it

hmm

bob
hmm indeed

The OP here reports the problem mysteriously went away by itself, so this should probably be closed as too-localized:

Q: Nautilus volume mounting

ZulakisMy Windows partition is appearing in the sidebar of nautilus under the label of "Devices". Its tooltip is "Mount and Open ". To my understanding, this should mount the volume when i click it. However, nothing happens when I click the onto it. Is this normal behaviour? If no, how can I fix it?

Ondra ŽižkaWhere does Urban Terror have its server list? And could someone kindly post the current list here? It happens often that the master server doesn't work...

@izx I agree. Unless Urban Terror is packaged for Ubuntu, this is at best marginally on topic for AU.

^^^ heresy!

12:44 AM
@izx That's a problem getting something to work with wine, and wine questions are on-topic here. So I don't think I agree that's off-topic.

I think it is a bug.
and it being a problem doesn't mean it is not a bug

If you think it's a bug in wine, then I'd agree it should be closed. But @izx seems to be saying it's a bug in the game. If it's a bug in the game, and the game doesn't officially support wine, then a bug report to Valve would probably be rejected.

izx
@EliahKagan Typically Wine doesn't partially fail, and if it does the errors the OP describes: wireframe models instead of 3D, etc. are usually due to incorrect HW support...
It's a bug in Wine, in that Wine is not an Emulator ;)

;-)

izx
In my long-ago IIRC with Wine and gaming, it either fails obviously (doesn't start, wrong resolution, no sound, crashes halfway, etc.), or works passably. But we'll leave this one be hoping for further details.

12:48 AM
I'm not sure of my position on this, but it seems to me that if the bug report should be filed against wine, then the question should be closed as off-topic with a comment linking to some bug reporting instructions ...but if the bug report should be filed against the game, then that should be posted as an answer (and maybe someone else can post a workaround as an answer).

izx
Comment: If possible, please edit your question to include screenshots of the glitches. These may be easier for someone who has also seen such problems to identify and suggest a possible workaround.
It's a bit convoluted but I'm a bit foggy atm :)

Q: How do I install Ubuntu to another partition from Ubuntu?

davepcBasically what I want to do is install a fresh copy of Ubuntu from Ubuntu. It is an older machine so usb boot doesn't work and I don't see why I need to waste a CD to do it. Currently running Ubuntu 11.10. I have a 1TB drive and a second 500GB drive for backup. The 1TB drive is partitioned as: ...

lol. IDC, he wants a solution that involves Unetbootin's frugal install, so I'm not going to bother.

askubuntu.com/q/139168/25798 close votes please. the OP thinks it is a different wireless card but it is not

izx
The generic answer to that, for Ubuntu and Debian, is to use debootstrap and be done with it. But I'm not going to write a howto for that either...
DIE BROADCOM DIE!

hmm, actually no, I was thinking unetbootin as well >_>

izx
@JourneymanGeek Please do answer then...(upvote reserved ;)

naw, at this point the answer is non trivial ;p
He COULD boot the iso off grub...
but ugh, never done it before.
So, no, can't answer it without a little science

izx
See, he doesn't want a solution that involves any effort (like a Grub ISO loopback would involve); he wants the "frugal install" to work.
Anyway, moving on...
Should we close this at OT? He's using Unetbootin to create a USB from a Windows ISO and then wonders why it doesn't work...

What is actually implied by upvoting and accepting? both look similar to me as an OP. meta.askubuntu.com/q/3656/61218

you upvote if you think the answer is useful

but when I accepting an answer, why shouldn't I upvote that one?

@AnwarShah it is personal preference.
i usually upvote but that doesn't mean everyone should
err, do what you think is right.

Yes, me also. But I wanted to learn any other scenario where you should accept, but not upvote.

2:22 AM
@AnwarShah IMO where the answer is a valid answer, but required no or very little effort, it should be accepted but not upvoted. e.g. Is Ubuntu open-source? A: Yes, it is and uses a variety of licenses <link to Canonical FAQ>

Thanks, @izx, see the point now. I want to upvote and accept this one.

@msPeachy install gdm.

but it looks like your boot sector is messed up?
good find @RolandTaylor

From another link I just read - it seems grub indeed is the problem.

3:21 AM
@RolandTaylor thank you

@jokerdino I've just reinstalled yesterday, fresh install, i even formatted the partition, I just don't get it. Back when I was using Oneiric I didn't encounter any of these boot issues

It seems to be a bug in grub :(
Which could be a pretty difficult thing to work around

It's either I downgrade to 11.10 or I'll switch to Mint

@jokerdino You are telling another thing I think.. I want to scroll through terminal, but without touching the mouse.

3:23 AM
@msPeachy @RolandTaylor yeah, seems like a bug.

@msPeachy What is your partitioning like?

@Santosh no. it depends on the command. you give me vague questions, i give you vague answers. we are cool like that.

@jokerdino How is scrolling related to any command? It is related to window management.

try ls | less and let me know

And, before you switch to Mint - we need to determine if it's a hardware issue.

3:27 AM
@RolandTaylor what do you mean like? the fs? I have 2 primary, 1 ext4 for Ubuntu and another ntfs for Windows but for now it is empty it is my reserved partition just in case Ubuntu crashes which it always does. Then I have an extended with 1 ext4 and 2 ntfs logical partitions on it.

Oh, I see. That might be contributing to the issue.
Depends on where grub is installing to

Maybe you'll need to use Lilo or something :S
(But I can't help there - only ever used grub and burg)

@RolandTaylor what might contribute? the ntfs partitions?

Binary package hint: grub2 I recently updated one of my computers to Ubuntu 9.10 and I've been trying to upgrade the bootloader to grub 2. The computer is an Acer TravelMate 240 but the hard drive died some time ago so I've been booting off a USB harddrive, because the computer's BIOS doesn't support USB boot, I'm using the PLoP Bootmanager on CD (http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager.html) to chainload GRUB from the USB drive. GRUB legacy has been working fine like this for months. Now when I chainload GRUB 2 from GRUB legacy I get the following error: error: out of disk Failed to boot default entries. Press any key to continue... When I press a key the message just repeats. In order to boot and access the GRUB legacy menu, I have to do a CTRL+ALT+DEL. @RolandTaylor mine doesnt drop to the grub prompt, it just tells me to press a key, if it drops to grub prompt, i might do something about it

@msPeachy apparently yes they might, but if it's a bug then you're better off not removing them.

3:33 AM
@jokerdino It shows this: i.imgur.com/iZQS4.png when I do that, and again pressing q goes back to terminal. Now I don't see any scrolling involved here.

I can reinstall Ubuntu again but I'm afraid it will just be a waste of time coz I'm pretty sure I'll encounter that hd0 out of disk again. I've reinstalled Ubuntu 6 times already because of that.

@Santosh it's because it is too small.

I think I went as far as I can with the ppa, got this as error,

@mateo_salta which one did you dput?

@RolandTaylor Honestly I didn't understand it...:((

@Santosh superuser.com/q/348385/104400 probably the real solution you are looking for. less is not really for scrolling.

@msPeachy Oh :S

3:44 AM
@RolandTaylor yes cos I'm that not technical :P

@RolandTaylor yes i am using a desktop computer

3:51 AM
@msPeachy it might indeed be a problem with the motherboard
as that person who came up with a workaround suggests

I'll install Windows later and see if I encounter any problems there

ሀ_ሀ
Lol you won't get any problems with Windows, I can assure you

Well the LiveCD works and I can mount and access all my partitions

The LiveCD will work fine - but once you install, there will be an issue with grub

so why would it be a motherboard problem? when other OS works? wouldn't that indicate that the problem is with Ubuntu?

3:53 AM
because it is having problems with something on the hard drive.
@msPeachy nope :)

> Ok, I have an ASUS mother,
okay what??1
@msPeachy strongly suggesting grub is at fault here.

See the problem is that because Microsoft has a monopoly, companies do junk, but not so it messes with Windows - so they can work around it without issue.
With Ubuntu, it's not like that. If the company does something stupid - Ubuntu has to adjust to suit.
Unfair, but it's the way the cookie crumbles :P
@nitstorm :D hey!

@RolandTaylor hey :)

hey @jokerdino

@izx because she is threatening to switch to Mint.

does the boot info script provide info on HDD health or something like that as well?
If so, she could try booting with a live USB or something and try posting that info as well right?

@izx sure about that?
Oh wait...
I wouldn't know that lol

@RolandTaylor btw, I realised I hadn't made some parts of the blog I wrote last night clear, will work on it today and fix that by tonight...
