12:13 AM
@Serg do you use Google hangouts?

@HeatherBrown Um . . . you mean that google chat thingy ?

I use it

user139252
@Serg yeah. I also use it as a replacement for my SMS app

I use it.
A lot.

@HeatherBrown I don't use it simply because I don't really have many people to chat with there. Here's my gmail, xieerqi56 , try adding me.. I'm constantly logged and constantly on my laptop so . . .maybe it'll work

12:16 AM
works good with the desktop app

user139252
Yeah, I'm a crazy person and have it on my desktops, phones, and tablets

user139252
My gmail is hbrown0579 if anyone wants to add me

I'm more crazy about QQ and WeChat
you can guess the reasons

even a good Ubuntu phone app out

user139252
Not Google? @Serg

12:21 AM
@HeatherBrown lol, regretting that yet? ;p

user139252
Nope. I like being bugged. Makes me feel like I have friends

@HeatherBrown nope, because it's mostly used by Chinese folks . . :)

penguins!!!

Ok, I think i've added you to my hangouts contacts . . . cool

Hangouts becomes even more awesome with group rooms.
We have one for 2buntu that we use for planning.

user139252
12:29 AM
We can get one of those going

@NathanOsman until someone from an idevice single messages you and a group in bulk, and you keep getting everyone else's replys

I'm not sure I can wrap my head around that.
But whatever the case, it sounds like something to expect from an iDevice :P
Ducks.

user139252
Why would you duck?

Does anyone know if apt-get/something tries to pull index files on login?
@HeatherBrown We haz many iOS fanbois

user139252
Sad

12:32 AM
It is. I want to get one of these, just to troll my Apple friends goophoneshops.com
tldr; android skinned to look like an iphone with a similar looking case.

user139252
It looks so much like an iPhone

Holy balls . . . I want one XD

I want one that uses multirom to dual boot their image and ubuntu touch ;)

I should install MPLAB IDE at least before completely declaring myself done for the rest of the day . . . yawn

@Serg did I find you?
lol

12:53 AM
@NathanOsman yay :D
How's the shirt sizing?

user139252
@hbdgaf make your iFriends think you hacked iPhone :p

@Seth Haven't tried it on yet.

@NathanOsman you mean you don't try new stuff on immediately?! :P

@HeatherBrown No. I just wait for that perfect moment when they say "Yeah, but I thought you were a linux and android guy?"

@hbdgaf With the "Jelly Ban Operating System"?
For some reason, I find that quite funny.

1:07 AM
There's something wrong with that picture...

@NathanOsman plot twist - that power cord is white blending in with the shirt and the laptop is in her backpack all along

I was repairing an NTFS drive and completely forgot about chkdsk. I went into Ubuntu, and tried, fsck, 3rd party programs, using a CLI tool to manually copy files, but never thought about chkdsk

1:48 AM
Has anyone ever heard of or used the Areca backup software? areca-backup.org

I want to buy a $.65 sticker from Google.
They want to charge $35 for shipping.

@NathanOsman DO IT
@Seth It's open-source. Get it!

That is patently insane.

@NathanOsman Is this a go sticker?

1:49 AM
@Zacharee1 I'm going to.

the initial price is a bit more expensive, but shipping should be cheaper.

Alright.

(should come out something like $15 USD iirc)

(I need to get my heart rate back down after the initial shock.)

1:51 AM
@NathanOsman It's probably because you're in Canada.. maybe.

I'm guessing.
I could send them 10 self-addressed envelopes for less money though.

lol "G logo infant bodysuit" <-- when you have a tech person label baby items.

@NathanOsman Maybe you should buy a bunch

...and resell them locally? :P

@NathanOsman yeah, FedEx shipping from Google is $6.65 (cheapest option).

1:53 AM
sure

Although I could pay $63 for overnight.

@Seth worth

@NathanOsman Also: follow unixstickers on twitter. They gave me a $10 off coupon for that.
Dunno if they still do that, but worth a shot.

@Seth then they would have to pay him $9 :p

1:55 AM
@NathanOsman LOL.
@Zacharee1 use replies >.<

@Seth @NathanOsman You here/available?

Oh wow, that's much more affordable.
@RPiAwesomeness Sure.

I'm helping a friend install Ubuntu on his new laptop and I'm not quite sure what to do for partitioning

yeah
@RPiAwesomeness Step one: run. :p

Good point :P
I've partitioned off 200GB of space on the drive (non-formatted currently) from within Windows, what option should I go for on the Installation type screen?
Current options are:

1:57 AM
Something else.
Always something else.
Never anything else.

k
Then do I just select the unpartitioned 200GB?

Unless you're the "replace windows" type, which I doubt.

No, he wants to keep it ... for now
It comes with Win10, so who knows how long it'll last

@RPiAwesomeness yeah pretty much. You'll need to partition out at least / and some space for swap (recommended).
Optionally put / and /home on separate partitions.

What's the simplest for him? New Linux user

1:58 AM
/ and swap is simplest.
That's what I started with.

I have to split that 200GB into / and /swap, correct?

in theory
I'd go for / and swap tho
(but for an advanced user, consider a swap file)

Oh, yeah. That's what I meant.

I think you need to make a new 8GB (or however much RAM is in it) partition for swap

k. It's got 16GB of RAM, what's the swap I should go for?

2:01 AM
just go for what it suggests.

I'm doing it manually, so there's no suggestion AFAIK?

8GB I guess. 16 might be a little excessive, although it is recommended to mirror the RAM I believe

8 should be fine
I doubt 16 will run out anytime soon

you're supposed to mirror RAM, but I never do that.

2:03 AM
@Seth 16GB would be too much

Really with that much ram all you'll ever use swap for is hibernating.

so yeah

Go with 6GB or 8GB

I gave it ~200 GB for the OS, 9 for SWAP
9 because it's all that was left after the 200 for the OS

2:03 AM
That'll work

sounds good.

[ SmokeDetector ] Offensive answer detected: How to set Grub Password by Four Chan on askubuntu.com

@RPiAwesomeness you didn't set a mount point

I didn't? I thought I set it to / for the 200000MB one and swap for the 9715MB one
Fixed
But otherwise, how does that look?

2:11 AM
@RPiAwesomeness see the "mount point" column?

@RPiAwesomeness looks fine
what's on that last NTFS partition though?

Cool. Welp, here goes nothing. If he loses Windows 10, then all the better! :P
I believe it's Lenovo's recovery stuff

ah
Is this a new PC?

Yeah, friend's

2:13 AM
Cool. That makes mistakes less costly.

Lenovo Y50-70
Reaaaally nice
I is jealous

oh wow.
If you keep an eye on ebay though sometimes similar ones come down.

3840x2160 display, 16GB RAM, i7-4720HQ, 512GB SSD, backlit keyboard, GTX 860M
Like I said, I wants

wow.

Yeah
My screen looks so massive coming from that res
The text anyways
I'm thinking I'm gonna save up and buy this
Though I might for a slightly lower-spec, i5 model & upgrade the RAM
Since I don't need and i7

2:18 AM
@RPiAwesomeness $10 billion

@Zacharee1 Close. $1,090

@RPiAwesomeness That looks good.

@RPiAwesomeness You think you can make that $300?

@Zacharee1 lol, I wish

@RPiAwesomeness rats, that's really nice.

2:19 AM
@RPiAwesomeness What's the exact model?

I might have gotten that if it was around when I bought mine.
Although I was really partial to an i7, since it'd have to be my daily driver.

@Seth i7 is pretty nice

indeed.

I have an AMD CPU.

especially with Ubuntu

2:20 AM
:P

@NathanOsman eww :p
@RPiAwesomeness pls

@NathanOsman In a laptop?

@Seth I would love an i7, but it's an issue of cost :P

AMD isn't so bad desktop wise, but they only have 1 halfway decent laptop CPU.

@Seth No, I have an i5 in my laptop.

2:22 AM
@RPiAwesomeness depends on how you look at it :P
I spent $450 and I got an i7.
I compromised on a ton of other places though.

@RPiAwesomeness 4k at how many in inches?

@RPiAwesomeness the MSi GP60 2QF is constantly on sale on Amazon. I got mine for $920 with a $100 rebate

720p and mbit ethernet are the really annoying ones.

@Seth Yeah. I would've probably gone with AMD, but I got a deal with an Intel mobo that came with free RAM

2:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek 15.6 I believe

@RPiAwesomeness I read a ton of benchmarks.. There's only 1 AMD laptop CPU that even gets close to comparing to an Intel iX processor.

Yeah, unfortunately :(

Some of them can pass an i3, but I haven't found one that matches an i5 5500U.
Well, except that one. I can't recall its model though.

@Seth although they say they're going to start making better CPUs
moving away from budget

I heard the opposite.

2:25 AM
Really?

It was actually just a desktop CPU underclocked for a laptop so it doesn't quite count anyway :P

I thought they were focusing on lower-end CPU/GPU combinations
I have one of their APUs in my desktop.

@RPiAwesomeness Pls, wat es teh ext model of teh Y50

(The GPU is disabled of course since I added an R9.)

@NathanOsman no crossfire?

2:25 AM
Basically 4K at anything less than 27 inches at typical viewing distances is a wee bit overkill.

@Zacharee1 Y50-70

The card was like $250 - I'm not buying two of them :P

@Zacharee1 their new GPU line since interesting
nothing's come out about zen yet

@RPiAwesomeness many different variations

Besides, it was a tight enough fit getting the one card in the case.

2:26 AM
@NathanOsman should work with the built in graphics

@NathanOsman which R9?

R9 270X.

I think I have that

@Zacharee1 Yeah. Friend's looking it up RN

2:27 AM
@RPiAwesomeness thx

I've got a GTX 750 Ti FTW from EVGA

(I run a 980TI.)

@JourneymanGeek Bruh.

For the win?

@Zacharee1 Yeah

2:27 AM
It strains a fair bit when gaming at 4K tho ;p

I just want a desktop :P

lol

Got it for $100

AAAAAAAA
the text scrolling!

@Seth so. Build one ;p

2:28 AM
@JourneymanGeek No $$$.
Not right now anyway.

@Seth I have a nice $400 base if you want to check it out

@Seth lol. Put aside coffee money every month. ;p

Runs MC decently on Ubuntu at 1080p

When I built my initial rig, I saved for over a year

60FPS stable

2:28 AM
@JourneymanGeek Same

@JourneymanGeek Dude, I don't drink coffee ;p

Granted, I think when i got a job, I threw roughly 2K of upgrades into it

Water is free, theoretically.

@Seth then you'd better start

@Seth pick your sin. Sin less. Save money ;p

2:29 AM
I need a job >.>

I wish I could build a gaming PC that I could use a lot
The problem is, I have three places I move between
School, mom's, dad's

@Zacharee1 I totally can't move my gaming PC ;p
you could build something in a mini itx, and use whatever output's available.

Well, for now I have a gaming laptop
5.3lbs

and >200FPS on vanilla MC in Windows

2:30 AM
I think one of my monitors might be heavier than that

Can't check in Ubuntu since it forces VSync
@JourneymanGeek yeesh

@Zacharee1 Does it? I thought you could disable that
I had to go with a full ATX case because of my mobo :P

@RPiAwesomeness idk how

This desktop does what I need for now. If I ever upgrade it, I'm going to do it up big. I'm thinking Xeon + 2x 32GB RAM + lots of SSDs in RAID 5 kind of big.

though, I'm spoilt now

2:31 AM
It's some universal setting

@Zacharee1 Huh.

@NathanOsman and then you'll give it to me, right?

I could rent it out :P
(Compute and storage space, that is.)
Then I would install Xen on it and have it run Windows AND Ubuntu at the same time.

@NathanOsman I tend to consider xeons overkill for most folks
I guess for you, fast compiles would be shiny? ;p

2:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek I'm not your average computer user :P

@NathanOsman in theory nor am I

@JourneymanGeek That and transcoding stuff.

though I go for quantity over power

I considered going with a Xeon

@NathanOsman You could host a server for my Bungeecord network :p

2:33 AM
Just a bit beyond my budget at the time though :P

Or just host my server â—”_â—”

@Zacharee1 I carried an 8 pounder around for years :p

My more pressing problem here is bandwidth.
The best pipe coming in here is my cellphone with about 10 Mbps.

@NathanOsman currently, my server is on a 5mbps bandwidth
@Seth I feel sorry for you :p

Ruh roh
GRUB isn't showing up, booting straight to Windows
Gonna give Boot Repair a go

2:40 AM
@RPiAwesomeness Secure Boot
Turn it off in the BIOS if you can
Also turn off Fast Startup from inside Windows

Already done

@RPiAwesomeness did you ever get the model btw?
@RPiAwesomeness ok

Woof.

I think I'm going to go to bed now
Bye people!

4:07 AM
@NathanOsman So did you get your gopher sticker?

I found a t-shirt / sticker combo and a $5 off shipping coupon.
I just have to decide whether I want to do it or not.
The exchange rate really raises the price :(

oh?
no chance you can scrape together enough USD from your coin collection as a kid to pay for it I assume :P

@Seth Well, it's more of a problem of not having enough on my prepaid cards to pay for it.

Wow, it'd cost me $35 USD to ship it to you..
I guess Google wasn't exaggerating.

1 hour later…
5:32 AM
Best Buy really needs to be called out for the glaring errors on their website.
> "Color changing: yes"
Er, no. The color changing ones are more expensive.

5:44 AM
@Serg cool, dependency problems :)

Wow. Lots of spam

Yup.

I thought, "why is he awake," before realizing it's 10PM for you.

6:37 AM
hi

@karanvirsingh hello

@Serg hello
where you from
?

@karanvirsingh technically from russia :)

k great
russia is great country

Maybe. It's a little boring

6:51 AM
?

I live in a very small town, nothing to do here

oh
k no prob you should enjoy in small town

:) yeah, it's alright
what about you ?

kos
@HeatherBrown Yes absolutely, it's very popular, expecially in Rome. Why?
@Serg I think this is for you: askubuntu.com/questions/717038/…

7:11 AM
@kos very well, editing

kos
@Serg What is that by the way? Ukrainian or Russian? Just curious :)

@braiam still here?

@kos Russian. And it's a dupe of what muru linked :)

kos
@Serg Lol. Ok, voted to close

7:27 AM
@braiam I saw your contributions to MDN very nice :)

7:48 AM
@HeatherBrown uhm... I found a way to exploit your Pi and gain root.
You can ping me on Hangouts if you want to discuss further.
nathan.osman@gmail.com
Don't panic though - I didn't do anything to your Pi other than testing if my exploit worked.
I can reverse everything I've done and explain how I was able to do it.

@NathanOsman I think I might need you to do that for my server. I'm terrible with security

Well, I'm not really skilled at that.
I can't go into details but this particular case was unique.

Morning folks. How can I reset this:
$ sudo semanage fcontext --list -C
/webserver/www(/.*)? all files system_u:object_r:httpd_sys_content_t:s0
means, reset my local customizations?

I feel like when @SmokeDetector finds a potentially spam question, it should hide it until moderation. Then there wouldn't be as many spam questions showing
Or would that take the fun out of it? :p

8:21 AM
Is it me or is HTML player on youtube plays much less quality compared to flash player at the same 360p setting ?
At 360p it all looks blurry

It's always funny when spam fails so badly you can't even tell what it's about
@Serg no idea :p

8:38 AM
Hi, I put "fish://user@host" to a Dolphin window (Kubuntu 15.10) and I can browse files on my SSH. However, when I edit a file through Kate, the Doplhin window becomes unresponsive. Am I doing it fundamentally wrong?

SElinux,
We begin to befriend us. >:)
sudo semanage fcontext -d -t httpd_sys_content_t '/webserver/www(/.*)?'
so beautiful simple =)

@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L That's a (hilarious) first
