@NathanOsman The images for the ubuntu toolbar script don't seem to exist anymore stackapps.com/questions/2405/…

Anyone know any good games to play on Ubuntuu that no require a lot of power

oh wait, forget that Nathan.
@NathanOsman But do you think you could serve the script over https? That would make me a lot happier :)

Q: Should we blacklist the freeze tag?

muruThe wiki of freeze says: Do not use. This tag is in process of removal. If your software is freezing then you likely need to file a bug, as freeze problems are usually off topic here and will likely be closed. I feel this is similar to the bug or error tags, both of which were blacklist...

> START, first configure then game. Use commandline or graphical:
Commandline:
/opt/rigsofrods/bin/rorconfig
RoR
@ST34M so try typing RoR in the terminal?

@Mateo It
It says ror command not found

use the caps like it has it
"RoR"
caps matter

@Mateo Command not found still

what about the first one
/opt/rigsofrods/bin/rorconfig

1:34 AM
No such file or directory

well, seems it didn't get installed? did you run into any errors installing?

Yeah I did and no errors at all
Ubuntu is a nightmare!
I can't even install Windows back on my machine now

you are following some random post, that has scripts to install stuff from source... hardly ubuntu's fault...
did it install within the folder the scripts were run from?
aka - is there a "RoR" file inside the folder you ran the scripts?

Nothing ever seem to install or work as it should though.

& I've found the bin directory its here: /home/ash/rigs-of-rods/install/bin
Though I've tried to run the same command with no success

2:09 AM
@ST34M it's mostly just different. Most of us here have used it for years, so we know where it's different from Windows and how to avoid its common pitfalls, just like someone that uses Windows knows how to avoid its own pitfalls.
really though, blaming the operating system because some 3rd party game was written badly is like blaming Windows because some 3rd party Windows software was written badly ;)

2:24 AM
@ST34M sure you can.
@Seth amusingly, my windows 10 install BSODed for the first time ever cause of a game XD

lol

actually
even wierder
the game caused my external sound card driver to crash the whole system
and I got a SFOD

VMWare once decided (on Windows) that it needed to remove the sata driver for my HDD every time I launched a VM.

That obviously never ended well.
I'm still not sure how or why it did that..

Q: Login incorrect when trying to login to VSFTPD

runelynxI'm setting up a new linux server and have installed VSFTPD. I can login to FTP fine using the root user, but not using my new user "AMP". @blade19899 coooooooooooooooooooooool

@Takkat Sorry, I haven't gotten the chance to answer. Pulse appears to be running:
$ pulseaudio
E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.
But pavucontrol still gives me the "Establishing connection to server, please wait" message, then shows the cards for a second, then the message again. This repeats until it stabilises to:

3:55 PM
@terdon may I have a very quick, simple question about dpkg ?

4:07 PM
@Serg Try me, sure.

4:21 PM
@terdon so I installed virtualbox from a .deb. Now I am going to install newer version. Do I need to get rid of older version first or it will be overwritten ?

It will almost certainly be overwritten. All the files should go to the same targets.

@Serg when I did that I removed the older version first before installing the newer deb.

That's probably better, to be on the safe side. I'd be surprised if they changed any target locations but you never know, I guess.

Got it . . . Thanks,guys !

@terdon okay... try to stop pulseaudio with pulseaudio -k, then run it again from CLI without the X11 script, just pulseaudio, see what happens.

4:34 PM
$ pulseaudio -k
$ pulseaudio
E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.
@Takkat ^^
$ grep autospawn /etc/pulse/client.conf
autospawn = no
; autospawn = yes

@terdon so it does autospawn? Weird

Apparently, yes.

do you have a custom client.conf in your HOME?

Not that I know of.

./pulse or ./config/pulse

4:36 PM
@Takkat No ~/.pulse and ~/config/pulse only has:
$ ls ~/.config/pulse/
cookie
e9ec65fd88a04300a02d204ca1e6ff58-card-database.tdb
e9ec65fd88a04300a02d204ca1e6ff58-default-sink
e9ec65fd88a04300a02d204ca1e6ff58-default-source
e9ec65fd88a04300a02d204ca1e6ff58-device-volumes.tdb
e9ec65fd88a04300a02d204ca1e6ff58-stream-volumes.tdb
This is an arch install, by the way. It might be respawning through a service I guess.

are you running pulseaudio system-wide by any chance?

@Takkat How would I know?
Huh. I have two instances running, one belonging to me and one to gdm:
$ ps aux | grep pulse
gdm        530  0.0  0.1 565088  4016 ?        Ssl  Jan03   0:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --daemonize=no
terdon   10003  0.0  0.3 565400 12452 ?        S<sl 18:33   0:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --daemonize=no

the GDM thing causes your troubles.

Ah

4:39 PM
Let's kill it then.
Grr. It respawns

so it has its own client.conf somewhere..

virtualbox updated, cool beans

@Takkat Not in either of the two places you suggested. I am creating one now with autospawn no.
$ cat /var/lib/gdm/.config/pulse/client.conf
autospawn = no

Thanks for the migration...

Made no difference. I kill it and it respawns.

4:44 PM
both respawn?

Yup
$ sudo killall pulseaudio && pgrep pulse
23406
23407

are you in the audio group? (you shouldn't be)

Ah, yes I am.
$ groups
wheel audio users vboxusers terdon
I shouldn't be?

well, this group means "use audio exclusively", that's not what we want.

Ah.

4:48 PM
its very confusing... (such as the whole pulseaudio is)

OK. I can remove myself from it then.

<-- keeps fingers crossed

Back in a bit
@Takkat nope. Same thing. pavucontrol useseless, DE's sound setting only show the (bad) DB live card.
Woah! Hang on. I launched my music player (clementine) from the commandline and saw these messages:
connect(2) call to /dev/shm/jack-1001/default/jack_0 failed (err=No such file or directory)
attempt to connect to server failed
Jack? WTF?

you may have the JACK module loaded... pactl list short modules

$ pactl list short modules

2	module-card-restore
3	module-augment-properties

No jack:
$ pactl list short modules | grep -i jack
$
Hmm. One thing I haven't tried is to simply remove the SB card physically. That might help, or it might leave me with no sound at all.

5:00 PM
wait

I'd rather leave that as a last resort.

first try simple things...: mv ~/.config/pulse ~/.config/pulse.old
then pulseaudio -k to respawn

Duh, yes, of course. Hang on.
lol. That worked :)
At least, pavucontrol is working.
Yay!

sssshh then the rest will also do.
no wonder all your configs and logs look o.k. ;P
you may even resurrect your old SB card

Weird though. I guess it was one of the ,sink files.
I even see the onboard card now!

5:04 PM
yeah modern PA stores a lot of restore options there.
almost no documentation on that.

Now, how can I set the onboard card to be the default one?

<-- off for supper

Fair enough. Thanks for the help!

@terdon fallback in pavucontrol?

@Takkat Is that the default? "fallback"?
Apparently so! Yay! Thank you very much @Takkat, you've been a great help!

5:06 PM

I have returned. =)

@Terrance happy new year and wecome back :)

@Serg Thank you! And same to you! =)

@Terrance how's everything been recently ? What's new ?

@Serg Been good, been off work and took a small vacation for the holidays. Now back to work and nothing really new.
@Serg How about you?

5:19 PM
@Terrance got sick in the beginning of December , around 17th which is also finals week in my university, got better, then two weeks later next day after christmass got sick again :) So pretty much spend all this time in bed and drinking countless amounts of green+chamomile tea with lime
Also , got arduino uno and two raspberries
one for my friend's son

kos
Can someone VTC this one as a duplicate? OP is fine with that but they edited the question when they were prompted with the duplicate message, so they can't close it themselves anymore: askubuntu.com/q/716820/380067

@Serg Thanks

@Serg Sucks for the sick part. Glad you're feeling better now. :) I love my arduino. One of my college classes used our arduino projects for our final. It was cool! =)

5:25 PM
@Terrance My ultimate goal is to create a programmable coffee maker with raspberry ( inspired by one true question and one fictional story :) As for arduino . . . I actually have a dev board for pic18 microcontrollers . . . bought it for my microcontrollers class . . . . (side note: assembly was pain in the "donkey" part ) . . . but i just said whatever, i wanna have arduino and learn it . . .
so yeah . . .i just decided to treat myself for the new year
be back in 10 mins, washing dishes

user139252
@Serg I used a servo and a pi to automate my Keurig last week

user139252
Well, a few servos

user139252
I still need to attach a water line, though. Right now I'm stuck with refilling it every couple of days.

@Serg You should create that coffee maker, then show us how it works. =)

user136984
Oh dear! What a day! First a Hamster wees on my face, and then a dog bites my finger! :D

5:35 PM
@ParanoidPanda animals definitelly are showing you the love
@HeatherBrown sweet :)
@Terrance It's going to take a while, I'm still noobing around with raspberry and all that single-board computer jazz :)

user136984
@Serg: And to finish it off 3 pugs knocked me over into the mud, sat on me and stole the dog treats I had on me! As well as attracting the attention of two other fat dogs who sneezed in my face! :D

I'm a cancer by zodiac , and cancers are slow . . .

user136984
And now back to Java... :P

@Serg Cool! Take your time. =)

Q: How do I make coffee with Ubuntu?

lapisdecorI want to make fresh coffee with Ubuntu, using open/free software, a coffee machine and a wireless connection. Why is YouTube now advertising me "Sexy Santa" videos for god sake?!

user136984
I don't care if they are the most popular videos on YouTube! I don't want to see them! :D

user139252
@Mateo it was easier with Raspbian. I just set up a cron job to execute my Python gpio script that moves the motors on my (very ugly) rig. It opens the chamber, pulls out the last pod with a hooked claw I made out of paperclips, moves a new one in from a spring loaded k-cup organizer, closes the chamber, and presses the brew button

user139252
Took me about 14 hours total to build it, and another 5 coordinating the program with the motor placement

5:55 PM
@Mateo I am actually using Snappy . . .I didn't quite know what it was untill I got it installed. But I might just start like it . . . just need to wait until 16.04 comes out so i can use dpkg and apt-get :D

@HeatherBrown OK, that sounds as cool as all hell. Pics or it didn't happen!

@terdon O_o this isn't 4chan -___-

Sure, but I would really like to see a photo of that. It sounds brilliant!
And no, I don't doubt she's actually done it.

granted, it does sound awesome

@HeatherBrown well, or Ubuntu MATE ;) that would also be cool

5:57 PM
Now, if someone could come up with a way of building something similar for a real coffee maker, I'd be truly impressed.

@terdon um . . .how does that thing work ?

@Serg You put water in the bottom compartment, ground coffee in the middle and then place it on the stove. Very strong coffee magically appears in the top compartment.

Q: "at" jobs stuck?

GussI have a system that uses the at command to schedule simple commands to be executed later. At one point I've logged into a machine and saw that something caused ~250 such jobs t...

user139252
Percolation!

@HeatherBrown Pressurized percolation. Plus, it gets better the more you use it.

user139252
6:02 PM
I could set up something to turn on the power programmatically for that

user139252
But not change out the water/coffee

@terdon I see, so basically coffee produced by condensation ?

@Serg Kinda. The water boils, rises through the middle tube, passes through the coffee under high pressure and then rises to the top chamber. It's basically an espresso. Better and far stronger than any espresso I've tested that hasn't come from a professional machine.
It is usually considered the best you can have in terms of strength and flavor. The French press gives (slightly) more flavor but not as much of a kick.

user139252
I had one of those percolators, but lost it when I moved

thanks nope. I am happy with my french roast, no espressos . . . .

kos
6:12 PM
I have one of those which would be supposed to make enough coffee for 12 people but which actually makes even more if you put enough water.

I have a few. The one I use is supposed to be for 4 people but I keep it all to myself :)
@kos you're Italian, tell them the moka is the best coffee maker one could hope for. Especially when you've been using one for a few years and it has developed personality.

Hmmm , , , suddenly have another idea - wireless printing server

user139252
You can do that

kos
@terdon Yeah that's right, it's indeed stronger than the expresso you'd have at a bar. They last a lot and they go for the better. Actually hold on, let me see how old is the one I have here. I got it from my parents.

I think mine was originally bought by my grandfather. I've been using it for ~15 years , since I found it in my parents house once when returning from university. However, some philistine had washed it so it hasn't been in use all that long.
Only 10-15 years or so. Still, it has a nice deposit on it by now.

kos
6:30 PM
Couldn't find the date. However I took a picture, it's very old AFAIK:
@terdon 15 years were enough to end up developing a bonding with it I guess. :)

@kos Well yes and no. I only use it when visiting my parents so, not that much.

kos
@terdon Ah ok, thought you were using it for yourself.

Well, I moved back to Greece last year and have been using it since, yes.

6:45 PM
@kos I think we have one of those...

kos
@Zacharee1 Try it. It's even stronger than an espresso. I believe you Americans don't often have espressos, do you?

@kos Well there is Starbucks, but that doesn't count :p
I'm not sure where it is. I just remember seeing one at home before

kos
I guess not. :)

user139252
@Kos I drink espressos. Local coffee shop brews real espresso made from Lavazza beans

kos
7:01 PM
@HeatherBrown Cool. That's what I've been told from my relatives though. They themselves have expressos only because my uncle was born here I guess.

@kos It's espresso in English, just like in Italian. Expresso is a common error but not one I'd expect from an Italian! :P

kos
@terdon Well... Touché. >:) it was a slip though, I wrote it right until the last sentence!

I know, I just couldn't resist teasing you.

kos
Yeah, I know, beating someone at their game is just too hard to resist.
However I appreciate corrections, I'm constantly trying to improve my English. If someone has they should feel free to point them out.

7:21 PM
@kos Your English is fine. I'm happy to correct (I also appreciate corrections when speaking other languages) but your English is really very good. Especially for an Italian ;P

kos
@terdon Thanks, I really appreciate that, expecially from someone who's basically a native speaker. And yes, I'll have to agree on the second one. Sometimes I cringe when I hear Italians speaking English :)

If it makes you feel better, I am a native speaker. No basically about it. My Dad's American and English is actually my best language.
I grew up speaking both Greek and English at home but have done most of my studies in English.

kos
@terdon Ah, I see, for some reason I thought Greek was the strongest of the two for you. Maybe I assumed that since I know you're in Greece.

@kos Your English is really really good :)

This is such a funny discussion

kos
7:30 PM
@Seth Hey guys, I'll blush if you keep saying that :). Thanks, really appreciated :)

user139252
@Kos this coffee shop is run by a second generation Italian immigrant and his family, and I'm most of their business :p

user139252
I spend a good $50/week there most weeks

@kos Don't tempt me to keep going :P

kos
@HeatherBrown Hopefully they've lost their accent after two generations :) no seriously, how many coffee do you usually have in a week? :D
@Seth Won't do that. :P

@kos oooo, a moka pot, I have a red one :)
also, french press is more smooth.
but I like the siphon coffee maker better

kos
7:44 PM
@Mateo It's curious how that is perceived as unusual by Americans / foreigners, here it's like the most common thing :) red is cool. I too have a small colored one (blue) for backup.

@Mateo looks like a chemistry kit of some sort

kos
@Mateo Nice! Ever tried a cup made with one of those?

yep, its my favorite, smooth and strong
but, takes some more time

kos
Should be approximately the same as the moka, shouldn't it?

7:52 PM
similar but it is smoother, has a cloth filter in there
so I don't think it turns to steam yet with it

kos
I just watched a video of a guy using that, I totally missunderstood how that works. I couldn't see steam at any point (aside from a bit in the lower chamber when the water is boiling before reaching the upper chamber).

Can someone upvote this, its been on 25 upvotes for months now, and I'm starting to get annoyed by it.
Also, new Sherlock is out!

@blade19899 There

@Zacharee1 Finally. Annoying as hell, to look at that for months!

kos
Actually I upvoted that one already before :) still didn't try the game though

8:26 PM
upgoated

kos
Too bad Parabola has that annoying pink background. It would have been my favourite live distro so far, but really, that pink hurts my eyes!

8:43 PM
@kos can't you script something to change the wallpaper ?

kos
@Serg Yes, I could, but that would require packing the changes into the image. I'm a bit lazy to do that, although yeah, it's bothering me to the point I might do that :)

user139252
9:00 PM
@Kos I usually stop in for an espresso and fresh baked quiche in the morning before work, grab a coffee on my way home, and sometimes hop over for a calzone at lunch

user139252
@blade19899 I was a bit disappointed by the new Sherlock. It didn't feel like the usual

@HeatherBrown Half way through. Nope. It is not the same...

kos
@HeatherBrown Ok I see, much like the bar down the street over here for me. I do everything I can there in the morning and usually come by again at lunch / in the afternoon. I'm their business to them pretty much in the same way.

@Seth, @Mateo, @RPiAwesomeness look what finally arrived!

@NathanOsman I thought you showed this off already a couple of months ago...
I like this one better!

9:13 PM
It just arrived.

@NathanOsman I've definitely seen someone posting a Hacktoberfest t-shirt before...

@Fabby need 2 >:)
@NathanOsman I know someone with that one :P

@Rinzwind You need a minimum of 3 legs on a chair, otherwise it falls over... ;-)
@Rinzwind Was it you who posted a pic of his T-shirt?

no :D I would not dare

9:29 PM
@NathanOsman awesome!!
really a nice T-shirt ;)
@Fabby probably me or rpi

@Mateo Ah! Mistery solved! @NathanOsman ;-)

@Serg: I don't know! I guess the site wants to please me so that I don't infect it with my paranoia! >:P

That's a worthy cause...
