Q: I already corrected the "too broad" issue!

Star OSQuestion: What is the meaning of the Ubuntu boot options? I have added a note to correct the "too broad" issue on my question. Hi everyone, losing hair and sleep. Any chance for some ubuntu help.....?

@michael dont ask to ask, just ask

tried to re-install 14.o4 LTS and i think i killed the partitions somehow. I dont know wont boot now. using a borrowed windows machine right now

@michael you should post your problem here. Live boot ubuntu and post your partition details

cheers

1:34 PM
@michael you can post the output of lsblk -f

ok give me a second, whats a kernel panic by the way?

@michael kernel panice is when your kernel crashes, there are many reasons for it. you have to reboot your computer

this is when its booting before it finishes loading ubuntu

@michael you should probably mention this too in your question, it will be helpful if you post the photo of your screen when kernel panics
@michael more details on kernel panics

alright just did lsblk too, will move over to the forum to post now thank you edward

1:39 PM
@michael paste your question link here (just link) :)

Q: install of 14.04.03 cause kernel panic before boot complete

michaelI have just re-installed 14.04.04 LTS for perhaps the fifteenth time. I have had much tro uble getting it to install and have played around with formatting and partitions quite a bit. here is the output from lsblk -f sda sda1 sda 2 sda5 ubuntu--vg-...

hope thats enough info???
sorry the output from lsblk i wrote out manually so seem to have lost the branching structure

> When I moved from Windows to Linux I thought I may not use Linux so much. So I only used some 60 GB for Linux. But nowadays I don't touch Windows.
^^Love this, they are not alone ;)

@michael output of lsblk is hard to read, you should copy paste it

sorry edward but im looking at one machine and typing on another. seems someone else has fixed it.... thanks for that

@michael you can also boot a live Ubuntu from USB on your broken machine. By this you can still browse Ask Ubuntu, look at your machine, copy & paste stuff, and more. ;)

ok will switch over
alright have posted output screen shot for lsblk

2:15 PM
@michael you have two drives in your system?

no one hard disk 180GB and flash drive with Ubuntu Live,thats all

@michael Boot repair may give you some insights by creating a BootInfo summary, and it can also try to repair common issues: askubuntu.com/questions/226061/… - it may just be a misconfigured Grub issue.

alright will do

@michael if in doubt don't let it do anything before asking somebody ;)

just installed running the BootInfo summary

2:35 PM
@michael apparently there is an issue with your LVM partitions...
but I am not so good at debugging LVM.
The Boot repair suggest to re-install Grub to enable LVM but I have no idea, if that will help in your case.

ok, how about just going from scratch. No important data on HD, all has been backed up.

You should add the BootInfo paste link to your question.
@michael naaah - no sports no fun ;)

its there in between the screen shots, accidentally. "no sports" ????

No sports is doing the obvious without trying to learn by tackling it the hard way. If your bold you can give BootRepair a try... but don't blame me if it makes things worse

Good morning folks ! o/

2:39 PM
Hi @Serg for the rescue ^^^:)

i like the hard way too, but I know very little about ubuntu. If bootrepair does make things worse can things actually become permanently broken? or just more work?

@Takkat hi there, what's happening ?

Hi Serg

@michael hello , I don't think we've met. Nice to meet you !

Hi, no first time here. Ubuntu has stopped working for the first time for me just a couple of days ago. Been a good year before that since I switched from windows.

2:43 PM
@Serg michael has an issue with LVM, I guess, but I am a toal LVM noob here.

Where are you guys from anyway? Nice that your here thanks for the interest and enthusiasm

I'm Ukrainian, but living in the US

<-- from the last parts of Germany that still does not have any snow

okay I'm polish in Australia

@Takkat eh, I've never played with LVM. So I won't be that much helpful either. But the kernel panic message on @michael 's screenshot in the question suggests there's no working ( or maybe corrupt ) /boot/initrd.img file

2:48 PM
@Serg I guess this is located in his non-accessible LVM partition. But nice to see that I am not the only one who did not yet play with LVM :)

i just found something that suggests
sorry something that suggests its because i used a cruzer blade and pendrivelinux to create the live usb from which i installed

@NathanOsman those are cool, I mostly have just the fading ones
I did put a color changing one that is a light strip used ITTT to make it change a random color every day

> Disk /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-root doesn't contain a valid partition table
Disk /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-swap_1 doesn't contain a valid partition table
from BootInfo - this should not be related to the USB installer.

what should I do about all those strange partitions? I dont know much about partitions but they have looked either very strange or wrong since I began trying to re-install

@michael yeah, that's it to the point.

2:54 PM
@michael so you've created one and only usb for installation, and tried to install multiple times, right ?

yes just the one usb, although have tried different options for installing and for either formatting or partitioning either with the installer or gparted

@michael here's an idea, try using different software and different usb drive. For example, I used UNetbootin to create my usb versions. Try jumping to a different version of Ubuntu, maybe 15.10. I would prefer 12.04 because it's long term support, but 15.10 will run out of support i think this year. If that fails, take out the hard drive, and connect it to different computer and use that other computer to install, then take out the hard drive and install it back into your lenovo laptop

^^ 12.04 should say 14.04 ;)

user139252
Yay.... Back to work....

removing hard disk might be a bit beyond me.The thing is that I had the same version on the same computer, cant remember if i used the same usb drive initially. I will try a different path to installing BUT what partitions if any do I need to adjust/delete/create first?

3:05 PM
@michael I didn't see any ntfs partition there, so that means there's no windows. Do you wanna keep any files there ? If nothing worth keeping on the hard drive, then do a full nuke - erase it all and install Ubuntu anew
@HeatherBrown on behalf of your work, i say welcome back

no windows no data. I love the full nuke but its probably where i have already gone wrong. Should I just do one unallocated space (no partition) with ext3 or ext 4 file format and leave the rest to the installer? writing to zeros (full erase) seems not to work with "Disk" program
Hi Heather, Hi Journeyman was that a grunt of helloor disgust?

@michael lol, naw
I need to get a linux install up to try out highdpi stuff
(I do not like dualbooting)
I'd rather throw more hardware at problems XD

Frankly I wouldn't dual boot either, if I didn't need some software for my classes

@Serg yeah
I have one pc that I can run my monitors at full resolution
then I realised I don't know anything about the stuff I take for granted on windows
40
Q: Can Linux deal with ultra high resolution displays?

MartinA few months ago, Samsung announced the Ativ Book 9 Plus, a pretty cool ultrabook with a screen resolution of 3200 x 1800 pixels (QHD+). The device ships with Windows 8 until Windows 8.1 is released and Samsung declared that only Windows 8.1 will be able to deal with this ultra high resolution. ...

3:12 PM
i have managed to avoid dual boot, some study stuff makes it hard but there's usually a way to avoid it.

seems slightly messy
@michael I think I can just throw another hard drive in
I have a 30 gb one somewhere around here

might be the way to go but whats out there that needs that super high resolution anyway?

Thankfully, hardware became cheaper recently. I remember seeing advertisements , $3,300 for 10MB hard drive or something . . .Nuts ! Nowadays you can get 1 TB for around 60$ on amazon

@michael just starting to get media at that res

user139252
Has anyone here used Crossover?

3:15 PM
and its one of those things you can't really go back to once your used to it
@HeatherBrown the wine fork or the monitor brand?

user139252
@JourneymanGeek The Wine fork.

People on 4k monitors complain they don't see their mouse pointers any more.

@Takkat I just use a bigger size, and the option that puts a ring around your pointer (in windows)

yeah a HUGE monitor is what I always wanted... all windows side by side, no overlaps \o/

wow, with the pointers. And yeah I remember 40Mb hard disk for about 700 AUD in around 1989. A new laptop 10000 bucks

3:17 PM
my first HD was 40 MB, I thought they'd last forever

lol
@Takkat I'm doing 2x 27 inches

I keep seeing them ASUS 24 inch monitors on amazon . . . kind of want those, but so far meh . . . saving money

Maybe I'll do 4x 40 inches if I win a lottery XD

I use the big screen TV sometimes but resolution is not great, ok for emails but not really spreadsheets. Ido use it when I have lots of stuff to copy and 3 or more external disks plugged in

The only problem with big screen TV is that . . . it's in the living room . . . and I just wanna be in my cozy little room

3:20 PM
I move closer to my 22 monitor which makes it feel bigger.

@Takkat I was toying with 'borrowing' my dad's old projector...
back when I had a 21 inch, single screen

lol

Hello folks

@A.B. good morning, sir

3:22 PM
hi A.B.

@serg :D
Hey @michael

Hi @A.B.

There has to be a point at which I had enough coffee, stopped having enough lazy feelings, and actually get energized to be doing something . . . that never actually occurs in my mornings, but i hope to believe at some point it will . . .

Yes, the human condition. Trick is to travel somewhere where their morning is just as your engine kicks in mid-morning (or mid afternoon). Only lasts a few weeks tho'

user139252
Where is @NathanOsman?

3:27 PM
@michael and it's pretty expensive to travel every few weeks lol

user139252

he is probably out breaking more raspberry pies

use awk to clean up that column @HeatherBrown

user139252
3:31 PM
can I use awk on last | head -n 20 | tail?

@HeatherBrown why are you usign both head and tail ? you could just use awk ' NR > 1 && NR < 20' to print lines from 1 to 20

@HeatherBrown need female advice here. How do you let a guy know "Hey, I'm not into you dude, fsck off "

3:52 PM
I want a shell script to execute itself whenever i'm connected to internet. How can i do that?

user139252
@Serg I would probably just say "Hey, I gotta go, I'll text you later." and then never text him later.

user139252
And ignore any further attempts at communication

user139252
and hope he got the idea

@HeatherBrown nah, persistet type. I've this friend in China and she has a guy who's into her but she's not into him, just wanna be friends. ( I should kinda know what to do because that's the situation i was in , me being the persistent type , but i am not very feelings-savvy type of person )

3:56 PM
@Serg let her deal with it ;p

user139252
Then just be honest and upfront.

But being direct generally worked when a girl wasn't into me.
Though I do worry about the one who dissappeared a few months, came back, said she had computer trouble, and vanished again.

Or get her to tell one of his friends or more, they should know how to tell him even if she doesn't ask directly. Only needs to mention how she feels. Worked on me

that gets messy tho
Simple always is best

Good morning @Serg :)

3:59 PM
@cl-netbox morning sir !

@Serg I checked deepin performance for you ...

Q: bug in vim editing, caused by tab or diacritics?

RodrigoI have the following line in a file (notice the tab in the beginning): $q = "select pl.id, pl.pltag tag, tf.nome família, tg.nome Gênero, ts.nome espécie, l.nome localidade When I try to edit it, let's say, replace Gênero with gênero, I move the cursor up to "G", change Insert to Replace (...

not really, a passing comment to them does the trick. Help him realise that his persietence is too much, when other people are involved. Some people dont get it direct from the one they crave, just see at as invitation to keep trying.

@cl-netbox Oh ? How do you like it ? By the way, i upgraded my vbox . . . now need those additions
Also, i need more coffee

user139252
I really want to know what in the world @NathanOsman did to my pi...

4:02 PM
@Serg it looks nice - BUT : no hardware acceleration in vbox and heavy power consumption ... so there is a lot to improve for the devs ! :)
@Serg I have something very interesting for you : plus.google.com/+clnetbox/posts/UQwpDQbL1p4 - this thing runs as fast as a shark ! VM install gives an experience as if installed on bare metal ! :)

@cl-netbox solus OS ? Never heard, i will try out
:3

@Serg It is an irish OS completely self-built with GNOME apps and BUDGIE desktop - the only OS besides fedora I consider to come close to ubuntu experience ... :) Setup went completely smooth ... :)

Serge I just fixed my install. Finally after 3 days of hell and ageing 5 years. It was the Cruzer Blade after all. Very different when booting the Live from USB even, and had a different menu asking to install or try. Installer fixed partitions too, which at the end were being treated as seperate HDs that gparted couldnt deal with. Cruzer Blade is going to be executed tomorrow at dawn.

@michael Happy to hear that my friend ! Congrats ! Also . . . Here's little something for you . . . wait a minute
5 usb flash drives , pretty decent price

ooh
and the cruzers are tiny

4:14 PM
got that for myself on christmas because i wanna separate my cygwin, linux live usb, and other crap

yeah it says "for those who want a discrete USB drive" a little too discrete for my liking. Could have made a blip or something for me.........hmmm I'm not waiting to be old to be bitter.

i think my mom is up

?

nah just me hearing things . . . .

ok
they are great but cost a bit

4:22 PM
tube shaped ones look interesting
Oo

sorry went for a ciggie, yeah they're solid. Even the non-tube ones.
Best I ever had (and lost) was only 512 MB that was a free sample at a computer show when they first started making them. All metal with rubber seals. Heavy as if made from brass. Fast and reliable. More than 10 years ago prices and quality seem to have dropped across the board.

gosh i wish i could go for a smoke right now, but my lungs aren't fixed yet, i am still coughing. Flu this year is so weird. Like i am back to 90% health, no weakness no nothing, but still coughing

need a boost of some sort to get you across the line.....lots of garlic maybe, no meat for a few days and a sauna.
I had a cough for about 4 weeks too, had a sore throat and bad head for a few days and then just razor blades in the throat after that. I usually dont get anything in summer either.
Whats the time where you are?

9:35 AM, I'm in Denver Colorado

@Serg just curious ... how many smokes did you have the last days ? :)

@cl-netbox i haven't had any since December 26th

4:39 PM
@Serg wow - congrats ! :)

@cl-netbox but because i was sick , not because i wanted to quit :)
well . . .
let's say it was accidental quit . .

may as well not go back to smoking now, how long you been smoking for though?

@michael I think his whole life ... =)

@michael eh . . .i've been playing with it when i was in teen years. It was pretty easy for teens to get smokes in my hometown - just come over to any kiosk and buy the pack you want. . . i stopped around 16 because i came to the US and couldnt buy anything here till 18 . . . started again when i was 22 or so . . . I was working in viet restaurant at that time

or ask someone on a date, just don't be too persistent eh...

4:52 PM
@michael nice one ! XD
Unfortunatelly the girls that i'd ask out on a date are all miles away from me
oh well

no like strangers?

@michael strangers are hit or miss , some might think i am a creep of sorts

find someone creepier, haha, life's adventure. I've never had any luck in all the normal places like bars or clubs. Always in the street, shopping, somewhere unexpected for me or her.

user136984
@Serg: Well, I have heard of a machine invented by the Japanese (I think) which allows you to send kisses over the internet (you kiss it and it sends the kiss to a robotic mouth which kisses the other person visa versa), so perhaps there is hope for you yet (I understand that they also have more intimate machines which I won't go into)! ;P

Actually, i found my best friend while in school cafeteria . At that time i would just come over to any chinese person i see , and ask to practice with them . . . or draw portraits . . . cuz that's what i used to do a lot back in the day
@ParanoidPanda means that i need to buy a robotic mouth . . . which might get expensive . . .

user136984
4:58 PM
@Serg: Actually, I don't think that they are too expensive...

ah, balls. Which compiler do i need ? I don't remember if my microcontroller is 8, 16 , or 32 bit . . .def not 32 bit

in Korea they have those people watching other people binge eat or eat together but through live streaming video. Single living is now the norm.

user136984
@Serg: Why don't you just make a girl fall in love with you and then she'll come to your country rather than you to hers?

Its hard been apart if one of you can't move right away........

user136984
Or dig a tunnel to China... :P

5:05 PM
Come to Australia lots of Chinese and every other girl you might like here. I better get to bed, its 4am now. B4 the sunlight otherwise I wnt be able to.
Thanks for everything Serge great help good talk and thanks everyone else here too, in good company.

@ParanoidPanda You're implying making a girl fall in love with me is easy . . .1) I have none of the Don Juan skills 2) I am a poor college student 3) I smoke ( @HeatherBrown can confirm this is a deal breaker for a lot of females )
@michael always welcome and hope to see you again soon !

goodnight, or rather goodmorning. good luck today.

user136984
@michael: Goodnight/Goodmorning! :)

user136984
@Serg: You're starting to remind me of this: :P

user139252
5:09 PM
@Serg You mean you slowly kill yourself every day with cancer.

user139252
I joke, though :P

@HeatherBrown whatt can i say, my idea of fun is unorthodox

user136984
@Serg: Isn't there a Chinese SE site? Maybe you could head over there in impress them with your rep level? :P

user136984
Yeah, here you go...: Chinese Language

user136984
;D

5:12 PM
@ParanoidPanda mmmm, i knew of chinese se long ago . . .for some reason never registered there .. .might be a good new beginning for 2016

user136984
You know, I'm so glad actually that there aren't any moderators around or easily offended people who like to flag things... :P

user136984
@Serg: Yeah, your first question could be "How to get a Chinese girlfriend?"! ;P

em. . . . .that's like . . . a language site there, not dating site there . . .my question would be off topic there . . .
and why did i say "there" 3 times ?

user136984
:D

user136984
@Serg: Ah, well you could ask what sort of language you have to use to attract them, what you have to say. ;P

5:20 PM
@ParanoidPanda that would be on topic :D

5:34 PM
OK, installing 16 bit compiler, hopefully i can turn my hp pavilion slimline into a workstation for playing with my PIC18 dev board

6:21 PM
Can anyone get the magnifier app to work?

user136984
Does anyone know anything about this? :)

Q: Should I be worried about "warning: checksum areas are greater than image size. Invalid section table?" messages during kernel upgrade?

Paranoid PandaI just ran the command sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and this was the output: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Calculating upgrade... user136984
@Seth: Which one?

user136984
@Seth: I don't know about the built-in Unity one, but the built-in GNOME one works fine. Though if you are talking about one that you have to install and is not there by default with the DE, I don't know.

@ParanoidPanda iirc it's called xzoom

user136984
6:28 PM
@Seth: Right, well, I have no idea about that! :P

user139252
I'm installing a package without a dry-run D=

kos
6:42 PM
Hmmm... why would pgrep ^gnome-shell$ be reporting two PIDs (which by the way show an identical output if I run pstree -s <PID> for both)?

user139252
how do I remove a package from memory if it failed due to unmet dependencies?

[ SmokeDetector ] Bad keyword in body, link at end of body, pattern-matching website in body: It improves overall skin all by Matthewnyberg on askubuntu.com

user139252
I no longer want to install it, but I can't install anything else until this package is sorted.

kos
@HeatherBrown Not sure if it helps, but try askubuntu.com/a/438365/380067
Other than that maybe via dpkg directly.

user139252
@Kos it was the dpkg -r I needed.

user139252
6:53 PM
3 more months until a new LTS :D

user136984
@kos: Do you have Tox by the way? :)

kos
@ParanoidPanda I had it, but I need to reinstall it. I just went through a system reinstallation

user139252
@Kos What about Hangouts?

kos
@ParanoidPanda I'll ping when I'll have reinstalled it, so that we exchange contacts (I suppose you'd have asked mine if I had it installed :)).

user136984
@kos: Yes, ping me when you get it installed again and we will exchange contacts! :)

kos
6:59 PM
@HeatherBrown I don't use it, though I have a Google account. I suppose I have a Hangouts account too then?
@ParanoidPanda Sure :)

user139252
So, I added their list and gpg key

user139252
But I can' sudo apt-get install tox?

Install raspbian ? check . . . install mplab and xc compiler ? check
@HeatherBrown they've github, download a portable version from there. That's what i use in my VM

kos
@HeatherBrown It's qtox / qtox-unity IIRC
I like that Star OS guy. They take things to heart. They're doing everything to not get their question closed. :)

@HeatherBrown I'm here now.

user136984
7:09 PM
@HeatherBrown: You then install one of the clients such as qtox, qtox-unity (qtox with Unity integration), or toxic (CLI client) - though there are many others. :)

Do you want to continue this somewhere else for security reasons?

user136984
They will come with the core (tox), you don't install that separately.

user139252
@NathanOsman I sent you a Hangouts message

@HeatherBrown I don't see it...

user139252
nathan.osman@gmail?

user139252
7:13 PM
Your picture is showing on my phone

user139252
Try sending a Hangouts message to hbrown0579@gmail

7:34 PM
I'm craving the golden badge. Still quite a bit to get it though :(

user136984
@kos: Remind me again what you have to do to get it. :)

kos
@Seth Can I go ahead and flag 8 comments containing various acceptations of "fuck up"? Some of them are useful but I think moderators can edit them, right?
@ParanoidPanda Score of 1000 in the tag. Let me rephrase that, a lot to get it. :(

@kos yeah, go ahead.

@NathanOsman you around ? I have small docker question

user136984
@Serg: Have you finally made your mind up about what you think of BABYMETAL yet by the way? :)

7:44 PM
@ParanoidPanda frankly, no. I have not been listening to them lately
Plan for today - listen to babymetal

Hello guys I need some help.
I need to read a file in bash as a parameter to command while removing from the file all newline characters and replacing them with white-spaces.
[code]clang -std=c11 "$(tr " " "\n" < source_files)" -g -static -nostdinc -nostdlib -I/usr/local/musl/include -L/usr/local/musl/lib /usr/local/musl/lib/crt1.o /usr/local/musl/lib/crti.o /usr/local/musl/lib/crtn.o -lc[\code]
The above is my shell script.
But it doesn't work for some reason.

@FISOCPP i am not quite sure what is going on there but looks messy

user136984
@Serg: The lead signer is very beautiful (in my opinion), I understand that she is a model, and also part of 2 other bands (one of which she started). I still haven't figured out the lyrics though (or who writes them)! So that will probably be the next thing that I do... Then I'll move to Japan! ;D

@Serg Nvm It was that I had to place "\n" first.

@FISOCPP tr "\n" " " < test3.txt
for future reference

7:51 PM
Yeah - that's was it.

user136984
@Serg: Once you've had a listen to them though, let me know what you think. :)

@ParanoidPanda I've listened to them, i just need to listen much much more to give final answer

kos
@Seth Ok I did, but somehow they got deleted right away as soon as I flagged them. Do you know why is that?

@kos Because SE doesn't like swearing ;)
link to the post, so I can keep an eye on it?
@kos Certain keywords trigger an auto-delete as soon as they reach 1 flag. 5-6 comment flags also removes the comment.

kos
@Seth Yeah I suspected something like that, but, you know, "The More You Know". However don't worry those were all scattered across different posts, I found them using this query: data.stackexchange.com/askubuntu/query/420010

7:55 PM
ahh, okay.

Just look at me, huh ? About year and half ago I knew next to nothing about computers . . .well, enough to get by . . . but now . . .I'm on Raspberry Pi with Ubuntu Snappy trying to figure out how to run minecraft server with docker image of java 8 . . . I know it sounds weird, but . . . i'm blown away by how much i've changed

as long as it isn't one user we're good then.
