@terdon posted and expanded my con argument rebuttal: meta.askubuntu.com/a/15746/367990
Did you already cast your downvote or was that somebody else?

Yep, already seen and downvoted >:)

I updated it after the first post though, you might want to read it again?
(not really assuming that this is going to change your opinion, but anyway)

@ByteCommander Not really, no :) If we could include code from PPAs instead of linking them, I would much prefer to do so. Since we can't, we have no choice.

Okay, okay, I'm about to erase my disk to install Xubuntu. Do I want to use LVM? IDK what it is, but is it good?

@Rinzwind :(

:-)

Anonymous
I'll just skip LVM and drive encryption then...?

This guy wants to mirror his display, right? askubuntu.com/q/797073/518562

I don't think you will need LVM .. unless you are installing it on a server

5:53 PM
@onebree LVM = Logical Volume Management.

Anonymous
What about encrypting the new Xubuntu installation for security

@onebree Encryption will slow down your boot times.

I would not choose encryption

Anonymous
And does "erase disk and install Xubuntu" format the disk, or just delete all partitions/data?

Anonymous
Okay no encryption

5:55 PM
@onebree It rewrites the partition table.

unless I will be using my laptop to store top secret files xD

Anonymous
Does that mean it formats the drive as well? If not, SHOULD I format the drive?

@onebree Understand there is a difference between a "quick format" and a "format".

is this on VM ?

@onebree A full format zeros out every sector. A quick format does not.

5:57 PM
if so go for Erase disk and install Xubuntu
new vm*

I want to install just Xubuntu on my SSD, which currently has windows, allocated space for a VM, and Ubuntu

oh no
wait

Anonymous
OK waiting.

is this on VM or you are installing Xubuntu alongside windows

Anonymous
My SSD currently has windows and Ubuntu. I was to install Xubuntu cleanly on my drive, removing everything currently on it

6:00 PM
if its alongside .. you can shrink your windows partitiona

Anonymous
Do I need to format it before doing so?

Anonymous
I am not installing alongside

ok then Erase option ..this will remove Ubuntu and Windows

Anonymous
Will the erase option also format?

yeah quick format

6:02 PM
Should I regular format it instead?

Not needed

@ThomasW. have to see what that is... Still could be a server thing for buisness users... Exact wording There’s something interesting coming for Linux users" not 'desktop' linux users or 'skype for Linux' users, cant really expect what they will do
Maybe they will just test and make the video calls work on the web version? Could be anything

When I select "something else", it shows SDA 1, 6, 5, 3, 4. When I select "erase disk", it says only partition #1 and #5 will be formatted. What about the other ones?

can you delete all partitions from something else .. and create two one / one swap

Anonymous
Okay will do

Anonymous
6:11 PM
"new partition table "?

yeah ?

@Mateo Given blogs.skype.com/2016/07/08/exciting-news-for-linux-users shows it in the Skype blog, I'm making assumptions. We'll have to see on Wednesday, but it better be a skype update, otherwise the Linux users're going to have a day of rage.
figuratively speaking :P

Okay so now I have "free space". I'm highlighting it and clicking +

go back choose "Erase disk " xD
and press continue

Will ALL partitions be erased though?

#5 would be swap

@terdon er hope this isn't super boring, but on further work-avoidance daydreaming, my brain threw up a possible reason for that text file being UTF-8 on arrival and ASCII after sorting. Maybe it had a byte order mark added by some windows program en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte_order_mark#UTF-8 which then got sorted out of its magic number position at the start of the file? (+ the file having no non-ASCII chars)

@Zanna Um, maybe? That's way above my head. I don't know how these things work at that level.

I added another argument pro GitHub:
> better usability for newbies

Imagine you are a rather new user who simply wants stuff to work and does not care too much about the details. You only have a very basic IT knowledge and just want something to double-click, not its entire code - I guess this is the average Ask Ubuntu visitor.

Now from the perspective of this user, compare an answer saying

"I made a script for this problem and published it on GitHub here (→link). Simply download this (→link) file and make it executable (chmod etc.), then you can run it."
@terdon Would you like to emphasize that compromise (include simple, minimal, but working script version in answer, provide updates and extensions through GitHub) in your answer a bit or do you want (me or yourself) to post that as separate answer?

7:19 PM
@ByteCommander Although we like to help OP, answers never are just for OP. Not a helpdesk. This is a con actually.
The lack of joined insight for me is the most important issue though. Everyone should be able to instantly look at it and commend/suggest.

8:18 PM
@JacobVlijm That described user is probably the average visitor. Only a minority of all visitors are advanced users who would actually review the code they run, like you and me.

@ByteCommander Not only OP, but many times, code is commented on (for the better in my experience) by other users. Although python is not that common here, I've had quite some usefull comments and suggestions over time.
...probably wouldn't have happened if code wouldn't be readable instantly. (I know I wouldn't)

Q: How to only append to clipboard (but not overwrite current data)?

Paranoid PandaI have a rather large file, I need to copy the entire contents somewhere, but when I scroll down the page all the data I have selected becomes unselected. I could just copy and paste block by block, but I would find it much easier as there is a lot of data, to just be able to append the contents ...

user136984
@CodeX No no no... I saw a screenshot of that today... It's not right...

@ParanoidPanda appending to clipboard - great question!

@Zanna when you hit your daily cap, you will be 7 short of 2k :/

8:58 PM
@terdon You should maybe add that the answer should contain a simple minimal working version of the script that answers the question, but any additional features and updates (except severe bugfixes) can be delivered through GitHub - I guess that is how you meant it, right?

user136984
@Zanna: Thanks! Hope I get a great answer too! :)

@ParanoidPanda I will definitely be using it if you do

@terdon ooo, here is a good cause: change.org/p/…

user136984
@ByteCommander: Did I understand you correctly in your comment?

9:04 PM
@ParanoidPanda I don't know, but I just came up with a perfect solution. Gimme a few minutes to post it :)
@ParanoidPanda Appending to the clipboard using a newline is simple, but I guess it will be a bit complicated to get rid of that.

user136984
@ByteCommander: I wouldn't even mind a system which takes out all of the current clipboard contents, puts it somewhere where it combines it with the new stuff, and then puts the whole lot back into the clipboard.

No, sorry. My mistake. It's easy without adding a newline in between.

user136984
Ah, well, you could still use the system I suggested above for that.

user136984
@ByteCommander: Couldn't you just get it to have the script put the contents in a file, add a new line to the beginning, and then append it to the clipboard?

user136984
And similar for the method where it does all that, but puts the contents at the beginning of the other contents (obviously the new line would be at the end for this one rather than at the beginning, to separate the data).

9:15 PM
good morning
yawn
@CodeX I would not like a unity desktop

user136984
@Edity: What is it you have then?

@ParanoidPanda That should be possible, but I'm facing a different issue now:

classic windows desktop

Is it ok for you if the command appends the last selected text snippet instead of the currently selected one?
In other words, I can find out what text has been selected last, but I don't know if it is still selected at the moment.

user136984
Selected last?

9:21 PM
You select a word. That copies it into the primary buffer automatically.
But clicking anywhere so that the word is no longer selected does not clear the buffer.
So to the command accessing it, it looks like the word is still selected.

@ByteCommander I see ..thanks for that info

I can clear the buffer manually though.

@Edity Cool

user136984
Just wait for me to finish my sandwich so that I can type again quickly. ;)

9:24 PM
@ByteCommander un, not really. My main point is that answers should be self contained. I don't see git as adding any extra value at all. All I'm saying is that if you want to use it, please also include the script in your answer.

You eat sandwiches? No bamboo or chocolate cake today?

user136984
It turned into a rather messy battle with the thing! Ever time I bit into one end, all of the contents of the other came bursting out! :D

user136984
@ByteCommander: I'm on a diet. :P

@terdon Then I will add that as own separate answer.

user136984
Right, anyway, so when a bit of new text is selected the buffer gets that new stuff overwriting the old stuff, right?

9:25 PM
Yup.

user136984
So what is the problem exactly?

And you can run a command to append that primary buffer to the regular clipboard and assign it a shortcut.

I might test the unity for windows :P

However, I can not determine whether a word is still selected at the moment or not. I only know which word you selected last.

user136984
@ByteCommander: So is the only issue that if no word is selected and I run the command that it will just take what I previously took?

9:28 PM
Exactly.

user136984
Oh, that's no big issue then. :)

user136984
I don't mind.

user136984
But how do other programs avoid this problem?

user136984
Or perhaps do they not but because the contents is the same you just don't notice?

I don't know, probably they simply do not use xsel but a lower level library

user136984
9:29 PM
Would it be possible to manually clear the buffer after a successful append or something?

Yes, I can clear the buffer manually at any time you wish.
You want me to do that to prevent double-appending?

user136984
Yes, unless you can think of any unintended side-effects?

user136984
Like this wouldn't affect normal copy and paste activities would it?

I don't think so, testing it at the moment...
No, it should not affect it.

user136984
Good, then implement that. :)

9:32 PM
Except in the terminal window. If you reset the primary buffer there, the highlighted selection gets canceled.

user136984
And have you got the opposite thing of adding the text to the beginning instead (with and without the new line depending on they shortcut)?

You can do that manually using whatever tools you want. Maybe printf or something like that should do a good job here.
It's all about reading the primary buffer and writing to the clipboard. Everything in between is exchangeable.

user136984
@ByteCommander: Perhaps make it (the manual clearing of the primary buffer) an optional functionality then (get it to call the script with an argument specifying whether or not it should do this).

user136984
@ByteCommander: But for what I am doing in Terminal it doesn't really matter so much even if it does deselect the text, but some may prefer otherwise so you could add the option in.

it'S not a script, but simple one-liners.
You can add an ; xsel -c at the end or not.

user136984
9:37 PM
Well, it doesn't really bother me anyway if it selects the stuff in Terminal or not.

user136984
So you could just say that then.

user136984
@ByteCommander: How close are you to completing the answer?

user136984
