Q: How do I ping the right bob?

Journeyman Geek We have two bobs at the moment. Bob (with the fox avatar) is a long time user, and bob, with the green avatar. I'd like to ping Bob, without bothering bob with my pings. I see two ways to do this - It's trivial for me to get the username - so could we have a way to ping a user by user id numbe...

what's the prototype method?

What I'd like is ping by id + clicking on the ava

how do you guys like your bash prompt? thinking about changing mine but I'm out of ideas

i use this github.com/magicmonty/bash-git-prompt but outside of git repos, my bash PS1 is just the default one (with solarized colors)

@edwinksl, I think I'll make a bash script to open a bash with a personalized rc-file to have a different PS1, one for each purpose?
maybe I'm just bored lol

I miss my cool PS1 :( :( ... It was :

Q: request of deletion or modification on the fun tag

Edity**DELETION:**I don't see any relation to ubuntu for that tag. MODIFICATION IF you have any idea, just go for it!

hello chat ! o/

Erm.

it is an interesting situation

Just flag it.
I'm not going to be the one editing it.

3:18 AM
looks like serg did it

I already edited it ^_^

hero we deserve and need

Okay, but "forgot" is a bit generous.
I don't even know how anyone could "forget" something like that.

OP insists it is sufficiently censored

OP is delusional.

3:22 AM
i think an edit war is brewing
OP has put the image back on

Meh, it's ok . I tried to warn him, he didn;t listen, so I won't continue. Comment and edit war isn't on my plans today
but if mods see that, they'll nuke it, like i said

Rolled back.
And speaking of mods... here we are again... Friday evening... :D
Le sigh.

OP actually blurred out the image properly
War avoided
I knew I can reason with this guy . . .

Oh oops.

isn't it interesting why OP would pick such a directory

3:26 AM
They must have done that while I was rolling back.

saturday morning here :)

@NathanOsman em . . . roll back

when there are so many other directories he could have chosen

I don't have the heart.

ok, i will do et

3:27 AM
looks like seth locked it

There we go.

OK . . . well . . . this has been a mess

didn't see the image :o

Good.

well, after I started working in shifts, I never saw the difference in fridays, saturdays, sundays and regular week days anymore

3:28 AM
@IanC nothing special , just p0rn

I'll work both saturday and sunday this week :/
oh, like in the background? lol

like as thumbnails
of a directory containing videos

Couldn't they have used Big Buck Bunny or something?
That's always the go-to video for FOSS screenshots / demos.

@Seth OP actually complied and properly censored his image in this question before Nathan removed it: askubuntu.com/q/796561/295286 Of course up to you to decide whether to keep it locked, but like I said, stuff has been censored and plus it's a solvable question

I see that.

3:30 AM
It was a race condition.

@KazWolfe welp , I think it's time to say elf you Microsoft and use something other than skype . Unless you have parents who stubbornly refuse to touch anything other than Windows .

ooh
you guys can use the redact option now
@NathanOsman assuming he can get a Big Buck Bynny WMV and...
@Serg I've been playing with matrix(synapse) and vector.

I'm sure there's one somewhere...
(Unrelated) They have a 60fps 4k version now.

Its a really nice, simple, open source chatroom client that does audio and video.

What is?

3:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek never heard of those , actually , but sounds interesting , especially since it's FOSS

Oooookay now. Why don't you get a new screenshot from the ~/Public folder. There is an innocuous video file there that should demonstrate the problem without raising other issues. Thanks. — Seth ♦ 17 secs ago

@NathanOsman and cough videos of dubious social acceptability in wmv might use wierd encodings especially when obtained dubuiously
matrix
@Serg took me ~10 minutes to set up, servers federate ala xmpp

doesn't skype runs fine on wine? (just asking, never tried it)

the need for a domain name for the homeserver and lack of ipv6 support's the only real pain points - but that's for the server
and you have a ton of client/server options
and IRC bridges

how about google hangouts ?

3:36 AM
I guess that works ;p

as i have found out, it is difficult to wean people off skype

tbh, I'm looking for a self hosted alternative to SEchat ;p

we could always use irc

there's a few decent ones. I like matrix the most (but lack of replies and the starwall are a pain)
and it has a irc bridge

3:39 AM
@edwinksl lack of native persistant logging

Binary installers and whatnot will soon follow.

@JourneymanGeek that can be regarded as a feature :P

I haven't found a good messaging system that doesn't use a phone # as an authentication method :(

@Seth define good.

well im perfectly fine with qtox

3:40 AM
phone hash?

@JourneymanGeek something that I would use?

sorry the noobish question, means you can only run it from a cellphone?

@IanC no but it means you need a phone to create an account
since the account is tied to a phone number.

got it

@Videonauth I agree with qtox. :)
Its nice

3:42 AM
I thought most cellphone messaging apps were tied to google accounts
at least whatsapp, and I think hangouts too?

no..
(are you sure whatsapp is?)
@JourneymanGeek what do you use?

whatsapp needs phonenumber

The best messaging "systems" I've found and use are Telegram and Signal, but both require a phone number.

true! I remember now I had to validate it through a SMS code

Tox has potential, but it's not there yet.

3:44 AM
the google account is probably just to keep contacts then

Hangouts is decent, but not secure in any way.

Does anyone know an alternative for ShareIt which works on Linux ?

so, phone -> computer?
or computer -> computer?

@Seth for most people, hangouts, steam and sechat

phone->computer

3:48 AM
I've been messing with matrix which is nice if more people would use it ;p

Discord is kickass and cross platform.

@JourneymanGeek link?

Telegram is amazing for chat, and Hangouts for video calls

@JourneymanGeek so far so good
downloading the app
wait is this a slack clone?
eh...

3:51 AM
I'm running the official matrix.org homeserver -(eh if you don't want to run an account, you can run one from matrix.org) - synapse + vector's web and android clients
@Seth kinda

^ This is why I don't miss Windows . . . just look at the amount of antiviruses and pc cleaning utilities
I used to have lots of antiviruses and stuff like that too , but . . . .holly mother of desktops. . . .

Could anyone test this: askubuntu.com/a/796275/72216 on non-latin? OP obviously has trouble with it in Chinese characters, but not sure if that is the issue.

@Serg wouldn't the various antivirus programs detect each other as viruses

@edwinksl yeah, that does happen
@JacobVlijm I could change into chinese mode , but will take me a bit of time to remember how i do that . . . .

6:04 AM
@Serg don't make too much trouble, but I think it is his issue somehow.

@JacobVlijm what's the exact issue he has ? does he have issue with Nautilus right click script , or runing script in terminal ?
ah, i see the comments
he has issue with both

@Serg he added it to his question too...

oh that's the same guy as the one posting not-so-censored pictures

@edwinksl really? Maybe that is why the script refuses for him :)

He's having a lot of issues with nautilus

6:09 AM
@JacobVlijm were you around when he posted it? if not, here it is: askubuntu.com/revisions/796561/1. it is nsfw; you have been warned :)

@JacobVlijm check edit history there

@edwinksl oh crap
@Serg @edwinksl maybe he confused with Snowwhite :)

i am also pretty sure the videos shown in his nautilus screenshot are pirated movies...

not our problem
we can fix his nautilus issues maybe
but whatever he watches, that's his private matter, and i couldn't care less . . . .

yeah it is just weird

6:14 AM
his nautilus problems are probably the cause that the 2nd one does not work.

@Serg agree totally

why would anyone screenshot a p0rn/pirated movie stash and post in public :/

i still need to figure out how to switch my system language
@edwinksl that's weird of course, but some people assume Linux is environment for pirates and for haxors and just anything goes
Some people don't realize that Linux is environment for professionals too

@Serg don't make too much trouble...

@JacobVlijm don't worry, i have time, plus nothing to do

6:16 AM
:)

brb , need to relogin
@JacobVlijm tested it with two folders , one is /home/user/WALLPAPERS and another one is chinese , /home/user/图片 , both still retain same icon

@Serg AHA, then we may assume it is a character encoding issue...
@Serg Thanks A LOT. Not sure how to solve it, never had to deal with this before...

@JacobVlijm no, the two folders have english and chinese encoding
so both fail, regardless of encoding

@Serg I will tell him that...

@JacobVlijm are you sure that you can set metadata::custom-icon ? I am looking at /home/user/Desktop metadata, which has custom icon set for it, but i only see this:
$ gvfs-info  /home/xieerqi/Desktop | grep -i icon
  standard::icon: folder
  standard::symbolic-icon: folder-symbolic, folder

6:27 AM
@Serg I tested the script inside-out 100x and it works fine

@JacobVlijm ok, changed it manually via nautilus right click folder properties, works ok. I dunno why your script doesn't , seems to be alright

...I think it must be the chinese language

@JacobVlijm but i tested it with folders named in two languages, one in chinese, one in english. Both didn't work

@Serg but your system is set to Chinese?

@JacobVlijm yes, i just switched to chinese

6:33 AM

On a side note, I think that guy might be Taiwanese. He has japanese anime there, but his system is in traditional chinese

@Serg I am pretty sure it works on latin. Did you test before the switch to Chinese?

@JacobVlijm when i run gvfs-set-attribute -t manually , do i put string into single quotes or without quotes ?

@NathanOsman yay no loading screen

@Serg should be without

6:37 AM
@Seth :)

6:53 AM
@JacobVlijm OK, here is the issue : your script doesn't change to parent directory icon. Custom icon for subdirectories gets set, but it's all white . . . .
And not for all of them . . .

@Serg huh? I tested it in and aout. The right-clicked folder does not change, but the lower folders inside.

@JacobVlijm wrong ping :) You pinged seth

@Serg this is in Latin?

@JacobVlijm I ran it like so python change_icon.py /home/user/Pictures
As you see, Wallpapers folder got changed to something, the rest didn't

@Serg in Latin?

6:57 AM
@JacobVlijm folders are latin , if you want me to change back system language, i can repeat the same process. gvfs doesn't care about system language
brb , gonna change sys language, and relogin

@Serg just re- tested, it simply works here flawlessly.

@JacobVlijm same result

@Serg I'll eat my shoe, have no explanation for it. The command even does not set any icon as a target, only folders.

@JacobVlijm also if I may offer a suggesstion, use full path to the folder and images, os.path.abspath() and add single quotes . RHEL website shows gvfs-set-attributes that quotes 'file:///home/user/blah.file'

@Serg I think I found a possible cause, holy crap, still don't know why it gives me no issue at all; I have a name clash in dr used twice.

7:05 AM
@JacobVlijm where ?
in both loops ?
Well, it certainly didn't throw no errors, i mean i printed command list , all paths were ok
the command passed to Popen was fine

Hey everybody

here "dr = os.path.realpath(current)" and "for dr in dirs:", but indeed it should not give an error, it simply replaces...

@JacobVlijm Let me post my edited version, I think i got it working. But parent dir, the sys.argv[1] doesn't get set, only the subdirs

....but I usually don't do it like that.

So the /home/user/Pictures foder didn't get changed, it still uses standard icon
but /home/user/Pictures/Wallpapers did get changed
@JacobVlijm yeah, tested it on another dir. Parent dirs, which is what is specified in sys.argv[1] doesn't get changed. OP might want that as well

7:10 AM
...I deliberately did not, since the parent might be a "general" folder
...but the abspath works?

@JacobVlijm by general folder you mean folder with mixed content ? Um . . . I'd suggest you ask OP about that, post him another comment. And yes, abspath works

@Serg that is.... weird, since root refers to abspath
are your images under a link?

symlink ?

yes?

Nope , let me test it with a symlink

7:14 AM
Well, I better call it a night.

@JacobVlijm when using symlink there's on print output , so i assume it doesn't work
no error tho

@Serg ...and what happens if you use "folder = os.path.join(root, directory)" instead of the ugly "folder = root+"/"+directory", but without abspath?
.... Luckily, I don't have to pay you by the hour :)

@JacobVlijm Nope , still nothing , also doesn't work if i use os.path.realpath() in the command list
@JacobVlijm I don't take payments so far, since I am not professional yet, but I do accept gratitude in form of chinese food , pho, or sushi :p
oh wait
DUHH . . . . damn parent directory
@JacobVlijm yeah !!! os.path.abspath() and the new folder = statement work on symlink
I was looking at the parent folder itself, while i should be looking at subdirs. DUUUUH
let me test it with chinese files

@Serg Still no clue what os.abspath changes, but I'll make the changes and update the answer. No need to say my gratitude is immense.

:D It all works with chinese files and chinese folders
@JacobVlijm no need to say thanks, always glad to help :) I think what happens is that gvfs-set-attributes wants full path to both folder and file:// item

7:27 AM
@Serg learnt something today. If I ever have the chance to buy you some chinese food, pho, or sushi, I will.

Yaaay, I earned yummy stuff ^_^
OP has another Nautilus question by the way
1
Q: Why is the space between each folder so big in Nautilus?

JulianLaiI want a bigger looking of folders, but the blank space between folders becomes big ,too. Is there any way to fix that? From this: To this:

Since his name is JulianLai, I'm gonna call him King Julian . . .. because references

@Serg What are those weird folder icons doing between the question marks :) ?

7:42 AM
I'm trying to change the size of some desktop icons in kubuntu anyone got experience with that?

@JacobVlijm King Julian is trying to make point that he doesn't like the space difference. Because it's totally not obvious
-__- Kubuntu isn't my field of expertise, sorry @Thijser

8:25 AM

... imo... more like too broad than oniony... hardware compatibility issues aren't exactly subjective? like for my x205ta I have no audio drivers, and that's something most folks would want to know about before installing?
but please guide me to the light here

AFAIK Apple limits the amount of hardware on which their OS runs, so hardware issue shouldn't be an issue since ages ago - there's plenty of devs and hackers who can make it work. But his main question is : "Can someone who's running Ubuntu on MacBook tell me about his experience with Linux on his Mac machine?" By my definition , that's an opinion. Like , here could be people posting answes like "I have some MacBook and it works for me" and others are going to say "Nope, didn't work for me".

hi guys!
I asked this question a while but got no answers. If possible can you guys have a look askubuntu.com/questions/795169/kde-slow-boot-on-kubuntu-16-04

@AbhishekBhatia Is your name drawn from a celebration for Shiva?

8:42 AM
Taken a look , but kubuntu isn't my specialty, i probably won't be able to help.
I need to eat something probably, because i am having a headache . . .

Ah yes indeed, I understand that, thank you for exaplaining. And I totally agree that Q as now should be closed as in theory could attract loads of answers like you say. But not sure they are opinions. Could be like:
Generally all works but
- wifi does not work on resume from suspend
- hibernating causes a kernel panic
- brightness and volume keys don't work natively
which are facts (though subject to effects of time+hacker ingenuity)

I'm not saying I am right & you're wrong, I'm putting this case as well as I can so you can guide me to learn how to moderate more effectively & appropriately

@andrew.46 Sorry, I don't much know :p, I think it relates to a ceremony. wiki says " It denotes a method of worship in Hinduism".
@Serg Thanks, do you know what is normally the boot time for ubuntu with ssd?

My boot time with SSD is <8 seconds

@AbhishekBhatia It probably is different for each SSD, all of them have different specs. Mine for example , takes less than 30 seconds. Let me check

@Zanna what! how? What desktop environment are you using?

8:51 AM
looks like mine took about 20 to 30 seconds , can't tell exactly

I get the same in Ubuntu (Unity) Ubuntu MATE and Xubuntu (XFCE)

Boot time doesn't relate to desktop, i think
It's due to scripts in /etc/init

yeah I think so too

What are your harddrives' rpms?

SSD don't have RPMs
they don't rotate

8:58 AM
rpms?! haha

Oh I have an hdd with 5400 rpm

yes, rpm is revolutions per minute...
but my ssd is very small, only 32gb

9:21 AM
;P

@Zanna do you have additional hdd to it?

@NathanOsman new nitroshare website looks sick

@Serg wanna bet they do? use them as a discus >:-D

9:36 AM
@Zanna are you using a mSATA SSD ?

@Rinzwind thank you very much, but they're too expensive for throwing around :p

Q: Why did removing 'python3' remove many other important packages from Ubuntu 16.04?

Rishabh AgrahariWhat I did: sudo apt-get remove python3 What I got in response : http://paste.ofcode.org/ycvjUteqjs8LzZfK9kHd5q Why did it remove firefox, docky etc?

We have a dupe of that

Hello
I have a bit of an odd question, maybe, but does anyone know what syntax theme is being used here? bit.ly/29CF0dV

@grooveplex Might be some version of solarized.
That's similar anyway
Hmm, not quite, but closeish:

github.com/cannikin/spacegray-dark-ui looks more similar to me
But thanks, I appreciate all help

True. The solarized one is just a classic dark theme and there are many variations. It might serve as a good starting point for searching.

Oh, Spacegray is a UI theme, but I'm mostly interested in the syntax theme being used
Still, maybe I could use the excellent online tmTheme editor and port the syntax theme to Atom (apm makes this realy easy)
I'm now going to try my luck with a slightly modified version of Spaceblack

10:31 AM
@terdon did you delete my comment on that python3 question I posted earlier ? Because if I am not completely insane , there was OP's and mine comment

@Serg I'm afraid your sanity must be questioned then. There are no deleted comments on that page.
Do you mean this comment?
Removing python is a no-no , because a lot of stuff is build in python and depends on it. Read this as the op from that question did the same : askubuntu.com/q/437644/295286Serg 31 mins ago

@terdon oddly enough my sanity is OK , but firefox is not . . . I opened that page just now, and it didn't show the comments , that's why I sort of was like "wut?" After going to my account page and activities tab, and opening that again , it did show the comment. Weird but ok
also . . . i posted comment on an answer . . . instead of the question . . . damn you mobile version, why you be so hard to scroll !
