9:04 AM
@cl-netbox how can you say I was that person who downvoted? accusations without proof are disrespecting

@edwardtorvalds I do not like this - I helped a lot of users because my things work (mostly) !

@cl-netbox what you don't like? my comments? I will stop them

@edwardtorvalds Do you think I am an IDIOT ?

@cl-netbox no, I don't

@edwardtorvalds and the downvotes !

@edwardtorvalds can't see any thing wrong with @cl-netbox answer

@cl-netbox do you have authority on me to dictate how and why I down vote answers?
@Neil me neither

@edwardtorvalds I offer you something : Let's work together and not fight each other !

@cl-netbox I am suggesting the same, when did we started fighting?

@A.B. @Serg maybe you could answer this meta.askubuntu.com/q/14690/294611

@edwardtorvalds I still see the downvotes - they are NOT justified and again : I don't like this ! - I saw some answers from you that weren't that good, but I respect your will to helping the user, so I did NOT downvote them !

Any cron expert?

@cl-netbox why you are after me? this is annoying now,

@edwardtorvalds that user could have a slightly different problem

@Serg upvoted, but to be honest: no you're no competition for @JacobVlijm once he puts his mind to something! ;-)

@cl-netbox i think he left the chat.

@Neil My question buries a little deep maybe, I wanted to understand exactly what happens with variables set at the top. Apparently a tilde will be expanded, but variables won't. My understanding was that cron handles them, not a shell, but now I'm not sure about that anymore.

@ByteCommander Morning and done =)

9:18 AM
Hi! :)

@ByteCommander And which Ubuntu version You're using?

kos
@edwardtorvalds ?
Morning @ByteCommander

@A.B. The Werewolf of course! Can't you see it? ;-)
@kos Good morning kos!

@ByteCommander Right ok =)

@Fabby That's definitely true but @Serg did do a pretty good job from what I can see. :D (Also, g'morning.)

9:20 AM
@ByteCommander Can you test this please? sudo adduser --system --uid 1024 --no-create-home --home / --gecos $(gettext "Guest") --group --shell /bin/bash bar

@KGIII :D 'mornin! ;)

Oh, I just see I got the bronze command-line badge! :D

@Fabby : Good morning my friend ! :)

@A.B. Give me a minute...

@cl-netbox Gute morgen!

Not on hand, no. Sorry. :( It's pretty close to what you said. Basically, "Pound sand." However, if they're showing initiative then there's some reason to help point them in the right direction but not do their homework for them.

@Fabby Guten Morgen Fabby ! :)

@hg8 do we down vote the shit out of it ?

9:24 AM
looks like this:

@edwardtorvalds If you have a problem with "duplicates", than flag. But if you look at the answers in more detail, then you will see that they are tailor-made.

hg8
@Fabby Hello my friend! Great thanks =) I let you post it ?

@Fabby To me it looks like this:

danke!

9:26 AM
@edwardtorvalds Many of my answers are strictly speaking duplicates. But they are also tailor-made answers.

I once saw a guy (through a link) who was asking someone to do his homework for him, specifically chemistry homework. Funny enough, the site where he was asking for help was a site where the professor was a frequent visitor and he recognized the student's question as they'd used the exact same verbiage in the question that the professor had used when assigning said homework.

@hg8 I will

@ByteCommander new link

@ByteCommander But why does it not in the script?

@A.B. Good contribution ! and another thing @edwardtorvalds : downvoting accepted answers is a GREAT help !!!

9:28 AM
Downgoating of good answers is never a good idea.
Duplicate or not duplicate

@A.B. First/lastUID don't work:
alphawolf@wolf-pack:~$ sudo adduser --system --firstuid 450 --lastuid 499  --no-create-home --home / --gecos $(gettext "Guest") --group --shell /bin/bash bar2
Adding system user `bar2' (UID 121) ...
Adding new group `bar2' (GID 130) ...
Adding new user `bar2' (UID 121) with group `bar2' ...
Not creating home directory `/'.

I do believe that there have been multiple complaints about said Edward. Up to, and including, forcing one user here to simply use the "ignore" option here in chat. While that does nothing to help out if they're messing with you on the site, it may be an option to avoid conflicts in the future.

Same with = or higher numbers:

@ByteCommander Start another test. rename the script and check, if the Guest login is possible after that.

alphawolf@wolf-pack:~$ sudo adduser --system --firstuid=450 --lastuid=499  --no-create-home --home / --gecos $(gettext "Guest") --group --shell /bin/bash bar3
Adding system user `bar3' (UID 122) ...
Adding new group `bar3' (GID 131) ...
Adding new user `bar3' (UID 122) with group `bar3' ...
Not creating home directory `/'.
alphawolf@wolf-pack:~$ sudo adduser --system --firstuid=4500 --lastuid=4990  --no-create-home --home / --gecos $(gettext "Guest") --group --shell /bin/bash bar4
Adding system user `bar4' (UID 123) ...

@A.B. The command does NOT work with first/lastuid set.

@ByteCommander Yes, but with a fixed ID
or not?

And when it fails to remove the guest account once again?
Will the next one overwrite it?
Or will it produce great error messages to scare my brother away? :D
(or fail silently)

let me check

@KGIII :D Yup, Edward Torvalds is on my ignore list until 21/11

9:32 AM
I don't know in which state the guest account gets left, if it stays fully there or just hal-deleted.

LOL @Fabby I was gonna let you identify yourself, or not. :D
I'm going to shamble down to the lobby and get a couple of the pastries that they put out. I'm smuggle back enough for you guys. BBIAM

He's on my ignore list in the chat and on the site until 21/11
then he gets a second change.
Three strikes and you're out though! ;-)
@ByteCommander no, a new one will be created.

@ByteCommander One more problem. The ID can't be greater than 500
if [ "$GUEST_UID" -ge 500 ]; then

Every guest account is unique. (be warned: I don't know the context of your remark)

@Fabby what did Edward Torvalds do ?

@A.B. Therefore I decided to use the range 400-499

@A.B. Firewall? I suspect apparmor. Because the UFW firewall should work the same for all accounts.

10:34 AM
@A.B. Perl is a bunch of unintentionally obfuscated code that has several traits, among which are unreadability and the programmer's tendency to not actually know how it works. Both are considered features and are marked as "Won't Fix" in the bug tracking software.

@Neil: I don't know... I didn't really listen to it that much, but I wouldn't say that it is my type of music.

@ParanoidPanda i listed to it for a bit. and can say its not my type as well.

@ByteCommander ok, ping as guest isn't possible. But Firefox should give an output in kern.lg o_O

@A.B. But it seems to me who has no idea about that stuff that apparmor is blocking the logging.
Because I get lines like this instead of the expected [GUEST INTERNET ACCESS] messages:
Nov 18 11:19:22 wolf-pack kernel: [ 1030.063374] audit: type=1400 audit(1447841962.731:164): apparmor="DENIED" operation="connect" profile="/usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-guest-session" name="/run/systemd/journal/stdout" pid=4693 comm="dbus-daemon" requested_mask="w" denied_mask="w" fsuid=499 ouid=0

@ByteCommander remove the iptables rule and check the kern.log again.

10:48 AM
How do I do that?

@Neil : First kick today from me received ? ... second one will follow soon ... =)

Ah, I found it out, just replace -A with -D in the original iptables command. @A.B.

user136984
I definitely (unless I am going absolutely crazy like @terdon thinks :P) posted this question yesterday, so how come it says "today"?

@ByteCommander sudo iptables -D OUTPUT -m owner --uid-owner 499 -j LOG --log-prefix='[GUEST INTERNET ACCESS] '

1 min ago, by Byte Commander
Ah, I found it out, just replace -A with -D in the original iptables command. @A.B.
No output in kern.log within the last few minutes except the normal UFW BLOCK messages.
That means the apparmor message from above was caused by the attempt to log the iptables rule.

10:55 AM
AppArmor says "NO TRACES" :)

And how do I tell apparmor "F### YOU"?

=)

Sigh... I fear I need to open another sub-question on that. :P

AppArmor blocks the write access in /run/systemd/journal/stdout

@ByteCommander But I doubt that changes to the profile are a good idea.

Aww... Why did someone downvote this? :(

@edwardtorvalds duplicate answers raise automatic moderator flags.

@ByteCommander we had a discussion on how to deal with duplicate answers, so I am informing them
@terdon automatic how?

Wasn't me @ParanoidPanda but I voted it up to give it some balance. ;-)

@ParanoidPanda Because there is simply no way anyone can know what is going on and help you. We don't have access to the machine, you haven't even tried to use an external mouse to see if the problem is the touchpad or not, all you've said is that you dropped something on it. How in the world would you expect anyone to be able to help?

@edwardtorvalds Pain in the butt is a relatively mild term, not particularly offensive. I don't know what the exact history between you and Fabby is and this really isn't something I think you'd want discussed in public.

@ByteCommander you could try this:
sudo nano /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/base
and add /run/systemd/journal/stdout w, below /dev/log w,
But I can not classify the safety point of view.
After that, restart apparmor
@terdon is that a bad idea? ^^^^^^

Oh, it's fine, this fixed it! :)

A: How to make "CTRL + ALT + T" open new Terminal window when one is already open?

Jacob VlijmThe funny thing is that on Unity, CTRL + ALT + T does open a new window, apparantly not on Gnome... To make the setup: First disable the existing command/key combination with the command: gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys terminal "" Which will make CTRL + ALT + T "...

The guy that answered that question, @ParanoidPanda, the Jacob person, is absolutely brilliant.

@KGIII: And his favourite colour is Orange, and so is mine! :D

Well, that's an important metric. nods Mine is green but I've not really made my OS match. It didn't seem important, at the time. I probably should. I'm likely to tear it down and rebuild it next week (or any week) so it might just be a waste of time except it'd help me learn something new.
Also, now I can't help but envision a panda, paranoid that someone's going to steal it, double fisting chocolate cake into its maw.
It's not as bad a mental image as one might expect. :D

Very appropriate @ByteCommander.
I'm tempted to "answer" the question just so I can include that image. :)

Or rather this:

Now that is almost exactly what I was thinking.

user136984
@A.B.: You know anything about this? :)

@ParanoidPanda No, but I have answered your background color thing
UV and accept tomorrow please =)
@ParanoidPanda Tomorrow

12:42 PM
@A.B. FULL HOUSE ? What a bad day for you ... on better days you accomplished this between 10 and 11 in the morning ! :D

user136984
@A.B.: I like to accept answers when I get them and they work, but I will redo it tomorrow. :)

As an entirely off-topic aside: There are way too many amusing "paranoid panda" pictures when you do an image search.

@ParanoidPanda :P =)
NO!
only 2 more days

user136984
@KGIII: When I search for "Paranoid Panda" in the DuckDuckGo images I just get nude women...

user136984
12:45 PM
With tattooed pandas on them...

I'm changing my search engine to DuckDuckGo.

user136984
@KGIII: I hope not only for that reason... :P

@KGIII nice - you will love it ! :)

I keep Google pretty blocked (I use uMatrix to stop all their silly tracking and scripts) but I do opt to let them keep track of my searching to better give me on-topic results. I'm aware of the tracking and opt to accept it in return for the increased functionality and the better SNR.
It's a trade-off that I made in good-faith, knowing the consequences. I accept that. I get on-topic results, for instance they know that I'm using Linux and usually looking for a technical answer. Tracking is disabled, by default, on other sites. :D

user136984
@KGIII: But DDG even gives you the option to use a redirect so that the sites you go to aren't given the term you searched for.

12:48 PM
That's okay, I use a VPN.
They can have those metrics. (They're also stripped out with a GreaseMonkey script.)

@KGIII Wow, that's great =)

I use Direct Google and stopRedirect. That and a VPN, and well, I am okay - I guess.

@KGIII in uMatrix?

What I do dislike is their tracking of people who do not know better. Me? I made a clear choice to allow them to access and retain some of my data in exchange for better results.
In uMatrix the api and ajax and google tracking are all disabled by default on new sites unless I enable them.
The other two are GreaseMonkey scripts.
uMatrix is like an old school software firewall except for your browser. It's based on whitelisting. It's a pain to get configured (for a while) but then it gets easier over time as you add sites that you frequently visit.

uMatrix looks great =)

12:53 PM
It also has an option to backup settings and to restore them from a file. So, I've had the same uMatrix settings (and expanding) for quite a while now. (I'm guessing two years or so?)
uMatrix is awesome. It does have a small learning curve but if you're worried about your privacy, it's excellent. Not to mention, one needn't run a bunch of other extensions on top of it.
I was able to dump Ghostery and Disconnect and just use uMatrix. I can probably get rid of AdBlock Plus too but I keep it as a backup, just in case.

I didn't know you could upgrade your kernel to 4.2 in 14.04...

user136984
Does upgrading the kernel to 4.2.0-18 in 14.04.3 lts help? — Raphael 2 days ago

user136984
I thought that was only on the latest version?

wow, uMatrix is really for advanced users =)

@KGIII I think NoScript is doing pretty much the same job as your uMatrix?

user136984
12:57 PM
@KGIII: So is that in the Firefox add-on store thing?

@ByteCommander Not really, uMatrix seems to do a great deal more - such as blocking cookies, frames, and other things - not just scripts. It's also highly configurable.
@ParanoidPanda No, I don't think Firefox has a version. I use Opera which is based on Chromium but has all the Google tracking ripped out of it. It is an extension for Opera. There's a Chrome/Chromium version, as well - I'm pretty sure. Heck, I might have downloaded it for Chrome - Opera can use Chrome's extension ecosystem.
